RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
This is the first time in a while that the weathers actually cooperated with my plans[sm=rolleyes.gif] How long is the racing going to go????????? The end of next month?? Might have to make it to Pheasant run next weekend........don't know. I'll have to see if I can talk Dan into going. He's got his truck hooking on the asphalt now, so I don't know If he'll want to alter the setup for dirt.......... I haven't ran on a dirt track in about 2 1/2 years, I know it'll be fun though. Once you find the line and the rhythm there's nothing like airing your truck out and cutting it up in the dirt[8D] good job last week Chaseman[sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif] The warhead broke out it the main......cracked tranny case resulting in locked up brakes.........first time I've actually "broke" in a while. ............. I don't know with all that traffic if I could have caught you or not[:o] Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how long the racing will go..........maybe Chaseman knows. I was assuming through the end of this month or next. Welcome to the group[:D] Feel free to talk about Anything r/c related in this thread. Drop one of those Tmaxxs in the dirt and throw on some Road rages.........bring it on[;)] The weather is looking good for Saturday........might even have to bring the canopy[X(] I did a set-up and threw a new set of skins on the NTC3, the Warhead still needs the once over but I should be good to go. I've been tossing around breaking-in the Nitro Evader.......I should probobly run it before the weather turns[8|] Chaseman.........did you get that Li-po yet?? Nahhhhhhhh, your not ready for that!!![;)][;)]LOL Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Anyone own a Warhead
Just space the shocks out 2mm and put threadlock on the retaining nuts.........no cutting and just enough clearance!!! Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: 86atrack4 This ? is for all of those who have lowered the truck in race mode. Did any of you cut half of the shock mounting holes off from the shock tower, in other words cut the block in half at a angle? I used a dremel with a cutting disk and trimmed the lower half of the shock block, this way the trucks ride height can be adjusted to its lowest point. I still can't get over how well the truck handles, when I did race a few weeks ago it stuck to the track and was on its lid only a few times. If the engine was getting hot and causing it to flame out I would have been 1st or 2nd in both heats and the main. I did bring my TNX also and finished the race with it. I'm certain that once a better fuel tank is available the problem will be gone, cuz the fuel tank and or engine head is the only thing thats holding me back. I did flip the truck 2 times(you know the ones that make you flinch and wonder what broke) nothing broke still convincing me that all the breakage earlyer in the year must have been from the cold. It's 75mhz two channel. Made by Futaba. It's got trims and dual rate. Nothing fancy but it'll get the job done. It came out of my Mini Quake. I'll go $25 seeing as you can get the futaba for $41. It worked fine in the mini-quake. [image]http://www.duratrax.com/cars/dtxd13-vendetta/dtxd13-radio.jpg[/image] I can meet you at Hobbytown tommarow around 1:00 if you want to pick it up. RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
Go to www.maxamps.com You'll want a two cell 7.4 volt. These peak at 8.4 volts and hold that for a while. The higher the C rating the more amps its capable of discarching........go with 15 or 20C packs. The fancy Peak and Orion packs aren't necessary but they're worth the money. The ICE does a GREAT job of charging them. It monitors voltage and once 8.4 is reached it reduces the amperage to what the battery will accept and eventually stops high current charging and goes into a trickle mode until the battery is completely full.........then it stops. You can only charge Li-Po at 10% of it's rated capacity so regardless of capacity it takes 1hr. to charge them..........small or large. You'll notice this with your cell phone when fully dead........it takes 1hr. to fully charge. I hope this helps. Grant drove the Li-po'd Mini Quake for the first time the other day.............[X(]"Wow Dad, I'm gonna do some whoopin"............."It's ALOT faster" YES it is!!!......... Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Anyone own a Warhead
I sent my radio in a week and a half ago, last week I got a new 3PM in the mail[sm=thumbs_up.gif] I've been running a Lynx 3D for a while but I told them I wasn't happy with the quality of the stocker........voila! Freebie!! Nobody beats Duratrax's customer service, NOBODY!!! I'm still winning EVERY week with my Warhead. Since the start of the season I've only broke a front center and front skid. That's it!! I did have the little front CVD incident(came out of the output cup on tranny and took out the switch wires[X(] ) but that hasn't happened since. I've dialed out the steering problem and I'm completely happy now[:D][:D][:D] I do plan on building a truggy but it will be my off road racer. Look Out!! Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
I did good[:D] Seven out of eight wins!! Dan beat me in the first monster truck qualifier. He's getting alot better. Well........he's got a good teacher[8|] I spanked him by four laps in the main though.[8D] I've been reading up on the Cobalt so sorry for the long wait. On Rob's recommendation, I installed a Li-Po battery in the Mini-Quake for Grant today. All I can say is [X(]WOW !!!! [X(]What a difference just switching to Li-Po made. The truck is insanely quicker and much faster!! Forget what I told you about the batteries earlier........Spend the $$$ and get a Li-Po for that TC4. You won't regret it.......at all!!! Of course you get more voltage but the big advantage is they can supply higher ampereage for extended periods compared to Ni-cd or Nimh, there's little drop at full throttle. They also hold their charge for weeks on end and can be cycled limitless times per day. Absolutely NO memory effect either (even NiMhs develop cell memory) And they're much smaller and lighter!!! Bonus all around!! The only thing to watch is you can't deeply discharge them. Once you notice a severe performance drop.......pull the car. You can't run them dead like the other battery types. Well I've got to give the NTC3 and Warhead the once over and I should be ready for Saturday.............let's hope it doesn't rain. You gonna make it??? Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
Tamorley.........glad you guys had a good time. Once racing gets in your blood.............it's like a disease[sm=biggrin.gif][sm=spinnyeyes.gif]. Oh, and make sure you flip that power switch around so on is facing toward the front[sm=thumbs_up.gif] Chaseman, I'm not sure what your looking to spend on batteries but I bought a two pack of Powerizer 3300mah stick packs off Ebay for something like $39 shipped. I used them in my Tamiya cars. They peaked out real good with the ICE and the voltage was sufficient. They're nothing like a good matched set but they'll provide plenty of punch and run time to get through a 5 minute race. Order up two sets and you'll have enough batteries to get through one day(remember NiMh should only be cycled a maximum of two times per day) Hey fellas.........Look what I'm picking up today!!!!! Supercharged Baby!!!

RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
You'll really like that charger. It's got more features and charging modes than you can imagine. I didn't have good luck with the temp probe. It didn't fit very well over stick packs and didn't really fit tight enough on the smaller packs to give an accurate reading. If you calibrate what it reads to what an actual temp gun reads you can compensate on the charger to peak by temp. Mess around with it. Better put that instruction book in the bathroom[:@] There's alot to read.......... Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
Two BIG negatives with that charger.......... 1st- It discharges at only 4A, Ice will discharge up to 10A which is much better for your stick packs. 2nd-and the one I really dislike- The peak threshhold setting is only adjustable in 5mv increments, the ICE does it in 1mv increments. In my experience, sometimes my NiMh Rx packs won't fully peak(be warm) at 6mv/c so I bump up the peak detection to 7mv/c and get a much better peak at around 112-115 degrees measured with my Raytek . If you used that charger(MRC) and set it at 5mv/c your Rx packs WON'T fully peak, then if you bump it up to 10mv/c they will OVERCHARGE and you'll ruin the pack in a handfull of charges. Of course it all depends on the circuitry of the charger, I'm baseing this on my experiences. Another bonus of the ICE is that it has a motor break-in function for those electric motors, voltage and time are fully adjustable. I also like the ICE's graphing function, when you charge a pack you can go to a graph screen and watch the voltage of the pack rise and drop off, this is a good way to see if your packs are really peaking without looking at the numbers themselves and getting confused. If your looking to save a few bucks look at the Pirahna Digital peak charger, it's around $50 and will do NiCd and NiMh packs up to 8 cells, I used one for a while with GREAT success. Plus it runs on 120 or 12v. The only negatives are it's limited cell capability and the fact that it doesn't do Lithium batterys. LMK if you got any questions, Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
Glad to see your back! [sm=shades_smile.gif] Nope, I think we only raced at Ortinville, they've cancelled the last two weekends. I'm really going through withdrawls too............I wasn't too happy with last Saturdays decision to cancel, they could have started late and pushed the racing until 6 or 7:00. I had figured the weather would cooperate and was awake until 3:30am getting ready and back up at 7:45. Since I fully charged my packs for last week I've got to cycle them tonight and tommarow. I've got a Nova head on the way for the STS .28. The NTC3 is ready to go. I'd recommend the Duratrax Intellipeak ICE charger. Alot of guys are using them including myself. It'll do just about any battery and the cost is reasonable for what you get. You'll need a power supply for home(and the track if you've got AC) You can get the charger for a tick over $100 and I'd recommend the Ripmax 20A power supply from Hobby People......it's $70. It's the last charger you'll buy for a looooooooooonnngg time. Hope to see you guys at the track!! Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hobbytown Racing Thread (Grand Blanc, MI)
I think it rained alot more south of me. It rained very lightly here for about 40 min. It was completely dry out around noon[>:] They could have raced...........[8|] Nice lookin 18B!!!! I'm amazed at how fast they can go(with a little $$$ put into them). I might build one this winter..........but I'm more of a nitro guy. I'm getting the Warhead dialed in but it's only capable of so much. The steering problem was due to binding brakes.......it doesn't like to turn on the brakes for some reason and I found one of the screws had backed out on the calipers(for the second time)causing the discs to get cocked on the output cup and drag. I CA'd the screws in and installed new discs and calipers making sure there was plenty of play in the linkage. I'm planning for an X1 CRT(kit) right now. I've got another Warhead that I bought for $50[X(] off Mike. It's like new.......but needs a proper clutch setup(the stock setup uses a clip which had come off), and the steering modified. I also had to pirate the motor mount off it cause mine cracked...........and the reverse isn't working in the Warhead I race so I might pull the tranny out of it and send it in to Duratrax along with some stress tech parts etc........ some more to pirate off the extra........ Once it's back together........ I'm going to Ebay it along with some other stuff to help pay for the CRT. Happy wrenching!!! Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Anyone own a Warhead
I've got a question for the guys running STS .28s...........What are your needle settings after break-in(high and low). I took mine apart and sealed it and now I'm chasing a bit of a tuning problem. I contacted STS pro-net where I got the motor and he didn't give me a straight answer. I just need a ball park figure so I can narrow down the problem. I put on new fuel lines, sealed the backplate, carb base and main needle. It's got a bit of run on after full throttle and it's wanting to run hot. I'm suspecting a problem with the low speed ...............hook me up with your settings. Thanks, Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, turns out it was his diff that was slipping. We got it tightened up in the main. It's a miracle it didn't melt the gear. RE: Anyone own a Warhead
Yea, He's about 17-19 and stilll lives at home. I think his parents pay for the stuff. Real nice guy.......a little cocky but pretty cool.
ORIGINAL: 86atrack4 THATS A SCREAMING DEAL! I would almost bet that someone bought it for him and he didn't have to shell out the cash for it.
Mym00n, DONT!!!!!! break the engine in with no load!!!! OS engines are notorious for being set too rich for startup. Put it in the truck. Truck off the ground. Heat the motor with a heat gun or hair dryer to 150 degrees or more to make it easy to pull. If you still have a hard time pulling it, loosen the glow plug. If it won't start(once primed) within a few pulls lean the high speed 1/4 turn, start it, then richen it back up. When heat cycling you want the motor to get hot (around 200), you may have to wrap the head with foil for it to reach those temps. Running it too rich will overstress the parts. After 6-8 heat cycles you can run the truck. Lean it 1/8 turn each tank. The Warhead tank is large so you may make two adjustments per tank, carrying the second adjustment a bit into the next tank. With big block motors you need to take your time. Temps may be a bit high for the first gallon or two. Once everything loosens up the temps will drop. Good Luck, Banzai !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Anyone own a Warhead
I forgot to mention................A guy at my track had a Warhead and wasn't happy. He approached me a couple weeks ago(I'm called the Warhead Dude at my track) and asked if I wanted to buy it. I said "nahhhh, I don't need another" figuring he wanted a couple hundred bucks. He said "No man, I'm talking $50, I don't want to look at it anymore, Everytime I run it, it breaks" I said "$50??!!, YEA!! I'll take it." [X(] He brought it to the track last weekend [:D] He forgot the radio so this weekend I followed him home and got the radio and another BRAND NEW body with decals!!! I almost felt guilty asking him for the radio[8|] 1- Warhead complete 1-complete radio 1-NIP brake disc 1-NIP F/R skid 2-NIP servo savers 1-NEW body with decals + some misc. parts $50!!!!![X(][:D]I got the HOOK UP[:D][8D] I cleaned the truck up and it's in GREAT shape.........there were a few things that needed attention but nothing major, tranny etc. seem to be in order. It had a broken center F skid and body mounts..........I sent them off to Hobby Services for Stress Tech warranty[sm=thumbup.gif] The clip that holds the clutch bell on was gone and the bell had slid forward, the spur is OK though......... so I ordered an OFNA nut and composite clutch shoes.......I've got an extra 3-pin flywheel and a couple sets of 1.0 springs. I've got a ton of WH parts that I've got from HS so this worked out great. The Lord blessed me with this deal!!!!! Banzai!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two speed hub is held on with two piggybacked set screws. When I did a tranny check I found mine very easy to take out. I cleaned, reassembled and greased everything with Tamiya Ceramic grease. Locktite the setscrews and tourqe them down good. Let it sit overnight and you should be good. My reverse input shaft wasn't too bad but the one way had a ton of grease/grime that had worked into it.
