RE: help choosing an onroad RTR for a friend.
They should both be 2.4ghz. As far as I know their is no such thing as 3.4ghz; I would guess that if it says that it's a misprint...

RE: help choosing an onroad RTR for a friend.
I'm not sure of the exact top speed, but it should do at MINIMUM 45-50 when you pull it out of the box. It wouldn't suprise me if it does 50-60, but I've never seen one radared. The Force .28 is a great engine. It's no super high horsepower crazy race engine, but IMO, it's one of the best RTR engines out there. They are really easy to break in, and they are really easy to tune. They hold a tune great as well. The best thing about the Force series of engines is that they'll run through 10+ gallons easily if they are treated right. We sell 10-25 Force .28 and .32's at the hobby shop I work at every week. It's the best bang for the buck replacement engine out there by far.

Don't buy the 4 tec! It's typical Traxxas crap... I have no experience witht the Thunder Tiger, but I'm sure it's a pretty good car. I would go with the OFNA GTP2. Those cars are a lot of fun and quite tough. They also handle and drive very well. I GUARANTEE you, you will not be disappointed with a GTP2. It does great in parking lots. If you're not going to be on a track or prepped surface, I'd stay away from any 1/10th scale. 8th scale will do much better on the street and parking lots.

You could always step it up to AE, HPI, or OFNA. Those companies have much higher quality options in both 1/8 and 1/10 touring cars. With one of these you'll be able to turn without spinning out![:)] Anything will be better than a Traxxas machine... LOL

I'd go with an O.S., Picco, LRP, or Novarossi. They're going to run stronger, longer, and tune easier. All of the other brands are a step down in quality for sure. BTW, I used to live in HK too![:D] Glad to hear it's still humid as always. LOL

Good work on figuring out the issue. Yeah, the 3.3 4tec is ridiculous, it's too much for the car. It's much more fun and drivable with a 2.5 in it. It does suck that you have all of the phillips hardware, but you can always buy a nice allen screw kit for it. Man, I'm so glad Traxxas finally got their heads out of their @$$es and quit using phillips head hardware!!! The phillips hardware always made it look so much more cheap and toyish...[8|]

RE: brake disk upgrade?
As far as I've ever seen, if you run a fiber disc you run steel flats for the calipers. If you're running a steel disc, you run pads on the calipers... How fast were you going when you melted the pads to the disc? I've never seen that happen before! I've never done any testing between the two, but have used both styles on vehicles. I would think that the fiber disc would be a stronger (pads can delaminate off of their steel flats when running the steel disc, pad on caliper setup) and less prone to melting option. Just make sure the fiber disc is vented, if it isn't, drill a few tiny holes in it for degassing and cooling.

RE: OFFICIAL OFNA DM-1 THREAD
Well, I figured out what servos I'm going with. I'm going to pick up two Futaba S9452 servos. They're a coreless digital servo that has a .11 second speed and 128 oz. in. power. I figure that should be plenty of power and definitely fast enough. The nice part is they only retail at $85! It's looking like I'll probably end up going with a Picco .28 for an engine, but I'm going to check out these Clockworks I keep hearing about right now before I make my final decision. If all goes well I'll be driving in less than two weeks![:D] Edit: I can't find a website for the Clockwork engines. Does anyone know where I can find a site to check out these engines? Edit: I got the hook up on the Clockworks from Supertib, so nevermind.[:D]

RE: The best 1/8th On Road Nitro that's a kit or ARR?
When I first got into this hobby, 23 years ago, their was no such thing as RTR. For me, building the kits is as much fun or more so to me as actually running the cars. I think RTR makes this less of a hobby and turns it more into a bunch of expensive toys. Hobby means that you build and work on what you're doing, not just buying something, pulling it out of a box, and running it... Now, I don't hate RTR's all together, because the RTR guys keep me busy at work fixing their stuff for them.[:)] RTR also introduces a lot of people to the hobby that otherwise would never get involved. Now, what gets my goat about RTR the most is how it's killing off kits!!! I'm so afraid that before long everything is going to come in RTR form and RTR will be all that is available, and honestly, if that day comes I'll be done with new RC's.[:(] All that will be left for me then is restoring the old ones.[:D] Lastly, I don't like having to buy a car with inferior components in it... Every RTR, aside from LOSI, come with total POS radios and servos. All that leaves me with is crap I have to take out and sell on ebay.[8|] I really don't understand why it's so hard for the manufacturers to offer something in both RTR and kit form.[&:] That would be the best of both worlds; then us old school guys can be happy building our kits and putting in top shelf components, and the RTR people can buy their toy and beat the crap out of it.[:)] As for the on road kit, I ended up going with a DM-1 Pro, which was more of a kit then I expected![:D] I think I'll be real happy with it, but I don't know for sure yet because I still have to buy an engine for it.

RE: OFFICIAL OFNA DM-1 THREAD
LRP's are top notch engines as well. I know people who have 25+ gallons on LRP .28's and .30's. Anyway, I'm guessing that like many things, this is something that is quite personal when it comes to preference. "In my experience the 086 really narrowed the tuning window, and killed bottom end(not such a big deal with a DM-1). Then I would throw the JP-2 on, the tune just fell into place, and the engine would have this hug gaping mid-range.. The 086 seemed to have this narrow little peak up top, but the rest was pretty useless I found.. My experience anyway.. Should probably try one again.. " That's almost exactly how I thought the two pipes would act, by OFNA's description. Obviously, real world performance is going to be different, but I don't want to only have top end power. As far as tuning, I'm not worried about that, I've been working on carb's for nitros and full scale cars for years.... it's not an issue for me. I actually enjoy an engine that's tough to tune, they -always seem to be the ones that give you the biggest reward when you get it right![:D] Keep the posts coming people! I like hearing multiple opinions on stuff.

RE: OFFICIAL OFNA DM-1 THREAD
I see a lot of people are running the 086, so I guess that's probably the way I'll go, as everyone seems to love them... I just figured the JP-2 might be better since it's mid and top. I came to this conclusion, because I figured the mid boost would be great for pulling out of corners and the top boost would be great for the straights. I guess I thought wrong...[:)]

RE: OFFICIAL OFNA DM-1 THREAD
I was looking at all of OFNA's pipes last night, and I also think the JP-2 is probably my best option. I figure its mid to top end setup will be perfect. It'll help me pull harder out of the corners when I'm at partial throttle, and should keep me flying when I'm balls out. I'll have to check out that novarossi(The O.S. is still on the options list as well) later tonight when I have time. When it comes to my engine choice, I know I need to find a happy medium between torque/hp and rpm's. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have some time still to check out engines before I make a final selection.

I got the DM-1 home today, a few days earlier than expected!!! I guess I'm going to be running the LRP .32 in it when they come out and we get some. I came to this decision, because I know two of the guys I'm going to be running with(coworkers) will be putting them in their 8th scales. Should be crazy![:D] I am thinking I'll run the OFNA 053 pipe, but was wondering if you guys think I should run the 086, even though it's specified as an off road pipe... Or, are their better pipes I should look at out there?

I do work in the car department, my name is Nick, if you ever want to put a face to the posts. I'm sure I'll see you around sometime. Do you ever run at the on road track in Kissimmee? I haven't been there, but I have a flyer with a picture of the track on it and it looks sick. I plan on going there and running the DM-1 when I have it finished here in, hopefully, a month or so. Where do you live in Otown? I live in Park Central apartments on the corner of John Young and Americana/Conroy.

Thanks for the additional tips guys. I think, from what I've been able to find, that the Picco P9 Evo 3 is discontinued. However, we may have one at the shop still that never sold, so my fingers are crossed. I'd like to check it out and see what it costs. The O.S. 25 is probably my second choice at the moment. I'd prefer an engine that comes pull start, because I don't have a bump box and I don't want to buy one. As for tires, I've read about all of the issues in this thread. I figure after I shred the stockers I'll got the M/T wheel, Anaconda tire, and Panther #F140 foams... All of that is readily available to me.
