RE: Sepulveda Basin
Rarebear is the new Crazy Eric! Actually I think the rules don't take effect until after 6 a.m. so Paul can pretty much do as he pleases. I may be wrong in which case you guys should have the authorities at the Basin make him follow the rules like everybody else does. Then again since the place was deserted who really gives a rat's a$$?
ORIGINAL: Silent-AV8R
ORIGINAL: alanrw Just saw this on ABC. Could this happen? http://abc.go.com/watch/clip/modern-family/SH011581240000/208026/236840 :) alan
Looks like they filmed it at the Basin. TV has a long history of portraying actors doing stupid things, I just hope that this does not embolden the knuckleheads out there to try the same thing.
OK from now on your new name is "Chicken Little" because as soon as I saw the episode (which was really funny btw) I new you'd be on here saying how this will bring down the entire hobby. I am just surprised you didn't include a tie-in to the government trying to ban all forms of RC flying.

RE: R/C Plane in
I saw the promo as well, it was filmed at the Sepulveda Basin Flying area. The flying field is used for filming all the time, ironically this is one of the few times it was used as an actual rc flying field in the story line.

OK I can't believe nobody has posted what is probably the number one maiden killer.... reversed ailerons! Four Star Forty from a kit took off and rolled, when I corrected it just kept rolling and inverted nosed into the runway. I've seen it happen many times.
ORIGINAL: beepee Jim, 1. Stay one step behind the pilot so that he has an unobstructed view of the flight line. 2. Keep the pilot advised of runway activity. People or planes on it, new planes taxiing to it, landing approaches, etc. 3. Let the pilot know he is closing in on crowded airspace. Pattern activity and such. 4. Verbalize occasionally on the fantastic piloting skills demonstrated! But, that's just me. Bedford
That's a good list and since everything is relative to where you fly I'll add one more for our local field: 5. Look out for full scale traffic. (Probably should be #1)

It was pretty funny but I agree that whoever did it was an idiot. I doubt any legislation will come of it and I bet it will have more of a positive effect having had so many people see what a new electric RC plane is capable of. The AMA or Futaba should be trying to get demo teams at big events to promote the hobby, it doesn't translate well to video but in person even Vin Scully was impressed.

I would call back on Monday and just say they sent the wrong plane and not mention the damage. Get your RA# and send back what you got which is what you should have done in the first place. I'll bet they don't connect you with the other call unless they are really mom and pop.

RE: Tail (Rudder) Touch
A few years ago this topic would stir up a hornets nest in the AMA forum (which isn't really hard to do). It was when the AMA was addressing such issues and there was "rule 9", which was actually a code and not a rule, that prohibiting tail touching but it was rescinded I believe.

RE: Big Bird dimise
Are you just longing for the good old days because from where I am sitting things are way better now than they used to be. Back than everyone had converted weed wackers with heavy airframes and underpowered servos. Equipment for large planes is so much better and prices are even coming down with new imports. The selection of planes including ARF's is huge compared to the old days and they fly much better as well. What's sad is that the organizers dropped the ball on what could have been a giant scale event that is very popular where I live.

I had two PW's. One got shot down by a guy with a trainer and the other midaired with a 35% for a spectacular crash, Joe Kelley saw it. Yours looks like the World Models version, mine were Great Planes but both were a little heavy compared to what came a few years later. The EF Yak is much lighter as are many new 25% planes available. You'll be glad you stuffed it after you get a new plane in the air.

RE: childs woodworking tool
I know the tool set you are talking about, I think my dad still has it. It's not the same one pictured above and for the most part wasn't very good. As for safety and modeling.... There is no way you can make it completely safe. There isn't anything you can buy that will guarantee someone won't get cut by something eventually. If the kid is mature enough than get him a Guillows stick and tissue model, an Exacto knife, some CA and let him have at it. Sure he'll eventually cut himself and glue his fingers together but havn't we all and hasn't it made us stronger and wiser? Or just get him another Nintendo game so he'll be safer.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
Regarding the electric area..... The club has let the cat out of the bag so to speak by creating the electric area. A little history for you newer members, the now electric area used to be the heli area. I saw more than one heli/plank midairs which were spectacular. I agree with others who said the electric area should never have been created in it's current location. There is a pretty obvious solution but until recently it wasn't technologically feasible. Move the electric area away from where it is. It could be anywhere actually, even another part of Balboa Park. Now that shoot downs should be a thing of the past, the club could look to expand the field, not just protect what we have.

RE: Who makes the best bandsaw?
You are smart to look in the 14" range, anything smaller doesn't hold it's value at all. The Grizzly saw, mentioned already, is the best bang for your buck. It is comparable to a Delta or Jet but maybe not as nice as a Rikon or Laguna. You can then look at some really pricey Italian saws but, for a home/hobby saw the Grizz is the way to go, IMO. For full disclosure, I have their 18" model.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
If you ask Michael Lederer, he'll tell you Ron Weiss taught him to fly. Ron told me the secret to becoming a good rc pilot was to fly figure eights in front, to your right and to your left. Once you mastered that do it again inverted. He told me to do that for a month or two solid and I would be able to handle any orientation. I was always afraid Ron would tear the wings off of whatever he was flying.

RE: Sepulveda Basin
Well the 400 foot ceiling may very well be the demise of the Basin but that is a separate issue than the guy buzzing the flight line. The root of that problem is the electric area should have never been created in the first place. There is obviously not enough room since many here have already stated that there is a frequent problem of people buzzing the flight line. I would bet that it is unintentional because most of the pilots at the field can't fly where they want in the first place. If you really want to send the guy a message, hover your plane in his face while he is buzzing the flight line. Eventually the 400 foot problem will solve the second problem. We'll be lucky if it becomes a small electric field because I know there are a lot of soccer moms that would love to turn the area in more soccer fields.

Bill, Having someone with AMA VP in his sig line posting that the field is on thin ice is stirring the pot. I know your intentions are good and that you know more about the legal aspects of the case you mentioned than anyone here but, when someone sees your post about the field they probably are considering selling their planes. I can post stuff and it's worth the paper it's printed on. You on the other hand carry a little more weight (in your posts). And finding a contact number? Come on, you are sitting at a computer connected to the Internet.

RE: What would polite suggestion be?
This field sounds exactly like the Sepulveda Basin as far as City/State run and no control by anyone who is there to maintain order. Most folks can not relate to the free for all that ensues when there isn't a club to run things. On the other hand many folks want to insist on thier interpretation of "the rules" or better yet field etiquette. My suggestion is to let it go. Say something if you want to but if it doesn't help don't let it bother you. Go there and have your fun just like the other guy is doing because it sounds like he is having more fun that you are right now. Maybe get to know him first because than you'd probably have a little more influence. Just let it go or you'll get burnt out on flying.
