RE: Old C&H ignition expertly repaired!
John, The sensor fits and works perfectly. It slid right into the hole in the Delrin timing ring and just tightening the set screw secured it firmly. No silicone needed!

RE: Old C&H ignition expertly repaired!
John, I got the sensor in the mail on Saturday and it looks great. I haven't had a chance to install it yet as I've been up to my elbows in rebuilding a basket case trainer for a friend. Just about finished with it now and will try to install it and fire up the engine either Tuesday or Wednesday if the relentless frog stranglin' thunderstorms ease up a bit. THANKS for getting it to me in a most expeditious manner! I'll let you know how she runs...

RE: Fox 3.2 Help
Check the carb butterfly and make sure it is still round and not loose. I've seen the little screw that secures the butterfly to the shaft that's supposed to be swagged so it can't back out in fact does loosen and back out a bit. Then the butterfly bangs around inside the carb throat and becomes distorted and doesn't seal/seat properly causing a big air leak. Happened to me with a Brison 3.2 which is similar to your engine. Thank goodness I had an alternate transmitter activated ignition kill switch as it happened in the air and the engine was turning at about 3000rpm with the throttle pulled all the way back. Took me awhile to figure that one out.

John, The sensor diameter is 5/16th of an inch and sensor length is exactly 1 inch long. The entire length of the pigtail assembly from tip of sensor to the end of the pins at the connecter is 13 inches long. Sorry about the blurry photo but I was only on my first cup of coffee[;)]

RE: 80 cc bicycle motor kit
Motorized bikes can be fun as hell. Years ago (70s), I had a generic 10 speed bike and outfitted it with a "Chicken Power" propulsion system, that I believe had an Ohhlson and Rice 25cc engine with a front wheel roller drive system. I had a blast with it and on several occasions traversed 26 miles of rural back country roads on it to get to my old Cessna 140 that was tied down several counties away. Great fun although the free roaming country farm dogs would often take chase of that bike with the whining motor and make me real nervous![8D].. Oh yeah, One time some good ole' boy rednecks in a 67' Chevy pickup hurled a full quart (wax carton) of orange juice at me and narrowly missed my face while cruising down the road toward the airport at 18 mph. That could have been ugly.[X(] So the morale of the story is motorized bikes are just plain fun to have but be extremely carefull of roaming dogs and trouble causing rednecks[:D]!

RE: Master K vs APC
I just go with the most effiicient propeller for my application. Usually with the mentality of "What prop would I use if this airplane/engine were full scale and I'm the Private( rating of your choice here[;)]) Pilot in command" Do I need short field performance (big tall pine trees at runways end), speed (to get from point A to B), or the best of both worlds? Do I want to save money on fuel (yes) or do I like a nice quiet prop so as not to wake the baby AND wife[;)] on long cross counrty trips?.. Usually the most efficient method of propulsion works best in most applications/scenarios as far as optimum flight. Absolute scale Models are usually a different animal though. Might go with a nice looking 3 blader and enjoy the peace and quiet and the cool a$$ look![:)] Certainly can't tell what the prop looks like when it's spinning@ 7500rpm and you're doing perfect 10 point rolls![:D]

Old C&H ignition expertly repaired!
Recently had a mishap (crash) with my 50cc Extra 330. The engine suffered some damage and the plane was totally destroyed. The carb was badly damaged as well as the linkages for the throttle and mechanical timing. The engine is an older Brison 3.2 with A C&H mechanical advance ignition. I installed a new carb and fabricated new throttle and timing linkages. Got the engine mounted a new 5occ plane and could not for the life of me get the engine to run smoothly at max throttle. Chased around cooling and possible timing issues and retimed and double checked everything . Still no luck. Along comes a poster here on RCU that goes by the screen name "gr8flyer55". He tells me he rebuilds the C&H units, modifies some with his own custom built circuit boards and also builds his own brand of ignitions. I figure I have nothing to lose as it's nearly impossible to find a "mechanical advance" C&H ignition. Sent it off to him and in less than a week it's back im my mailbox labled as repaired. I install the ignition back in my plane and set the plane up to give it a shot. Darn thing fires right up, idles beautifully and runs smoother at full throttle than I can remember. He sends me a PM describing what he found wrong with it. It was a broken coil wire and the positive battery lead was broken at the solder joint. He repaired the unit and sent it back for "no charge". I asked why no charge and his reponse was "no parts needed' so no charge!! On top of that, he is sending me a spare rebuilt C&H mechanical advance Ignition to have should I need one for any future mishaps. Anyway, John (gr8flyer55) is truly an asset to this hobby. He didn't have to do any of this and said he just enjoys doing it as a hobby and the pleasure of keeping RC enthusiasts happy. I will probably purchase one of his Auto Advance designs to have in case I ever want to ditch the mechanical advance. Thanks a million John!!

RE: Brison runs rough/hot crankcase?
Looks like this thread has gone a bit off topic but what the heck, it's the 4th of July. We had it made while living on the Navy base in Argentia, Newfoundland. We had a fully stocked hobby shop and an awesome control line club in the basement of the library fully equipped with all the power tools you could ask for, airplane storage racks, personal lockers and dozens of 5 gallon cans of military issue clear and white dope and a great short grass flying field directly across the street. The hobby shop was next door with all the Flite Streaks and Ringmasters of all sizes and types for under $2.00 apiece. The Noblers and the more expensive Veco kits were a whopping $2.25. Can't remember what the Veco 29 and 35 engines cost at that shop as my dad would occasionally pick one or two up for me on the way home from work if I had been a good boy[:)] Oh yeah, and a bottle coke and a hershey bar were a nickle each for a grand total of 10 cents in the hobby shop vending machines. Candy, caffeine, Ambroid glue, clear dope fumes, model airplanes and great commraderie OH MY!!........ One more thing, upstairs in the library were all the Model Airplane News magazines you've ever seen!

RE: Brison runs rough/hot crankcase?
Dan, That Barnstormer photo looks like a shot straight out of a "Leave it to Beaver TV show! I built a Barnstormer back in the early 60s. Got a picture of it somewhere around here. Seems I remember the plans called for running the leadouts on the opposite wing so it flew a clockwise circle instead of counter clockwise. It's been so long ago I might have dreamed that though. W8ye, As far as the Flite Streaks, most of us were using .29 or .35 sized Fox or Veco and a few "red head" Mc Coy engines and they flew real good with those. Then one day (1964) in Newfoundland, a sailor gave me his beautifully built and painted Flite Streak with a Torpedo .19 on the nose. He had orders back to the states and couldn't bring it with him for some reason. I remember how lightly he had built/sanded it but was real skeptical about how it might fly with the measley .19 for power. To my shock, I had the most fun flying that plane. It was almost like flying today's 3-D models with it's super low wing loading. I also remember a school bus full of kids pulling over to watch me fly it standing in on place, not moving my feet doing consecutive inside loops then a series of outside loops to untwist the lines. Then lather , rinse and repeat the procedure[8D]! The loops were so tight they were almost unbelievable and it floated in for landings like a butterfly. AHH, Those were the good old days!!!

RE: Brison runs rough/hot crankcase?
Man that brings back memories. I think I was the guy that invented that stationary footed technique[;)] Sure helped when it was expertly built and light. A good Veco or Torpedo .19 would kite like fly the darn thing if built real light and flown on 60 foot lines. First noticable "floater" for me indeed. It did need a little more outside rudder with this setup[X(]. My first lesson in wing loading for sure!
ORIGINAL: w8ye I used to fly C/L Flite Streaks. I liked to take off - fly out the tank of fuel - and land without ever moving my feet.
gr8flyer55, What a guy. Thanks for the offer but I just figured out the problem a few hours ago. I borrowed another mechanical advance C&H Ignition from another plane I have and the engine runs flawlessly again. I'm going to try replacing the Bosch cap with a new one I have on hand and rewire the battery leads and see if I can get the old (silver case) one to function as it should again. If not , I may have to convert to a fixed timing RCexl unit and modify my engine/timing ring to accept it. I do like the C&H mechanical timing setup though. Worked great for years and years!

RE: Composite Arf......Problem SOLVED
I've got some older 8411s and the darn metal gears develop slop and wear rather quickly and when they do they have a propensity to occillate back and forth (especially with freshly charged 6 volt systems) trying to find center. Had/have some strange in flight fluttering sounds with several different 50cc aircraft using those servos. I also notice they are very power hungry. I'm still using them but getting very wary of them hoping they don't trigger some sort of catastrophic harmonics within the airframe.. Saving up now for some Titanium geared Hitecs.
ORIGINAL: goirish yes I have. It sure looks like the butterfly is closing completely when I put the throttle stick at low.
Take a good look at the throttle butterfly disc and make sure it is still round and the outer edges are closing off completely. I've had a few of the swagged screws that are supposed to secure the butterfly in place (and not back out) come loose and distort the butterfly when it bangs around in the throat from vibration so it doesn't seal anymore and leaks air all over the place.

Brison runs rough/hot crankcase?
Got an older Brison 3.2 that has always been reliable and smooth running. It was recently involved in a crash. The carb was damaged and the timing linkage (mechanical advance) was bent and twisted. The crankshaft appears straight although it wasn't checked with a dial indicator. I installed a new WT 76A carb and gaskets and replaced the timing and throttle linkage. Checked and adjusted the timing as per manual at 28 degrees BFTDC at max throttle. The engine starts, idles and runs fantastic up until about 3/4 power/throttle. At about 6400/ 6500 rpm (Menz 22/8) it runs rough and misses slightly and sounds as if it is overheating even though it does this after a relatively short warmup of about 30 seconds (cowl on or off makes no difference). When I shut the engine down I notice the crankcase is EXTREMELY hot and takes forever to cool down. The muffler and cylinder cooling fins don't seem to be getting nearly as hot and cool down rather quickly. Brought the plane home and pulled the plug and turned it over by hand so see if I felt any resistance or roughness/grinding to see if the bearings had any obvious problems. It felt smooth and turns over freely. I have another Brison 3.2 (great running) and removed the plug to give it the same test for comparison and it felt identical. Been all over the needles and no amount of richening or leaning will alleviate the problem. Ignition battery checks out fine although I haven't tried bypassing the switch yet. Could the main crank/crankcase bearing be slipping/rotating in the case causing extreme crankcase heat? It appears fine by eyeballing it. Any ideas before I smash it to pieces?
