RE: 1st day on the water story
Like Noisy said put your receiver in a balloon. Add a nice tight rubber band to close off the end. Even though it is in a water tight radio box as you have found out stuff still happens. When it does your day is not over. I take my receiver apart and spray the circuit board heavily with Corrosin X. Let dry and put it back together. For your servos make sure they are dry first. Then with the bottom removed spray in there heavily with Corrosion X. Let it dry and wipe it off. But before you replace the bottom cover apply a very small but even bead of silicone sealent all around the contact edges and replace the cover. Your servos will never get wet again. You can seal the top part of the servo where the gears are. Just be carefull to not get silicone on the gears. Have fun with your boat.

RE: rio 51 upgrades
You will get better speed out of the Grim Racer 67X105 3 blade prop but don't forget to balance and sharpin it! If you haven't changed out the stock stinger for an aftermarket one (like a Speedmaster) keep a close eye on it for cracks. Once it brakes off you loose your driveline and everything on it. This will hapen on a modified Zen and sometimes on a stock one.

RE: Zen G260PUM Problems
I'm sure others will jump in shortly with specs on clearance between the flywheel and pickup coil. And yes it should not rub. Grab the crank shaft on either end of the motor and try to move it up and down (not in & out). Any play up & down would indicate bad bearings along with any roughness while turning the crankshaft. What mixture is your gas to oil?

Thanks - You saved me
I would like to thank the powers that be on this forum. I was just an email away from trading off my two elect trucks for a gas powered HPI Baja 5B buggy when "THIS MEMBER SUSPENDED" popped up on his add. I can only guess what might have happened after I shipped off my trucks and waited for his to show up. Thank You Butch

RE: hose keeps coming off
I have had problems keeping my cooling hoses on but when I went to using zip ties (plastic ties) that cured it. Possibly something else is going on here. Try plugging the hose out of the pipe and blow into the other hose. If you can blow into it and hear noise or you can keep blowing into it and it leaks down slowly chances are your o-rings are leaking. That can let exhaust gasses build up and blow off the cooling hose. Also try cutting off the last 1/4 to 1/2 inch of hose. It will make a tighter fit.

RE: need help with rio 51
The Grim Racer 67/105-3 prop is a good prop for a mid range modded Zen motor. I've always gotten more speed out of a three blade prop "on my Rio" than a two blade by about 8 MPH. But I do know that two blade props work very well on many other boats. If your motor can turn it try an ABS 2814-3. ALSO! I've had three Grim Racer 67/105-3 props and not one was close to being balanced out of the box.

RE: need help with rio 51
As the guys above have indicated "you need to get your exhaust tuned correctly" and that is one of the very first things you do to get the motor to run at it's maximum efficiency. Most everybody starts by measuring it out. I believe it’s 12 ½ to the largest part of the first cone on the pipe. I’m sure I’ll be corrected if that is wrong. Then I make ¼ marks on the header and move the pipe in and out until I find the “sweet spot for a combination of maximum speed and best launch out of the corners (I use an onboard GPS unit for the speed). After you get that right come back and we’ll give more things to try. A lot more! With what I perceive as your present set up I would think your boat could hit high 40’s MPH with the proper tuning of the motor and hull.

RE: pulling to the left
I'll second what Mart said about shimming the strut (prop) a few degrees to make the boat go straight. I beleive the boat is faster that way then correcting the direction with the rudder controls.

RE: engine dies after 15min?????
Just took my deep vee to Idaho and it did close to the same thing. I'd toss it in and it would idle out and as soon as I would hit the gas it would die. Other times when I could keep it running it would bog down baddly until I could hit faster speeds and clean it out. But as soon as I let it slow down it tried to bog down and die. I thought maybe it was the altitude differance because it ran like gang busters at 700 ft above sea level and where I was in Idaho was 2300 ft. So I tried several leaner mixture settings without any luck. So as a last ditch effort I opened up the carb and adjusted the fuel pump needle lever lower and that did the trick. Now as I stated that was a "last ditch effort" and not something you want to jump right too. The other things I checked before doing that was 1. Check the spark plug (rich, lean etc.) 2. Check for spark. 3. Check the fuel filter. 4. Check fuel flow from the tank. 5. Check the screen in the carb. 6. Make sure the High and Low needles are set correctly. 7. Check for loose components or leakage (carb, isolator block, cylinder and case). 8, 9 & 10. Try different High and Low needle settings. 11. Drink a few beers and cus. 12. Adjust the fuel pump needle lever. 13. Drink more beer.

RE: Velocity Stack
I have also ran with them on and off and with the GPS and have found little to no difference. As far as water getting into the motor I seem to do that very well no mater what is on the carb. One big advantage to not run one is that you can choke the carb with your finger much easier without it. Also removing the carb without one in thee way is easier too.

RE: Finally got it!!! -Rio51-
The 30 minute epoxy didn't last when I applied it to the inside of my RIO. It now comes off in pieces and yes I did sand and clean the inside hull before I applied it. On my second RIO I used fiberglass resin and so far so good. It has been on for 7 months now. 47 MPH on the Fugi is exceptional! Did you check that with a GPS or radar?

RE: Rio cavatation
If you are running that two bladed prop switch to a three blade. Try the Grimracer 65X105. Octura X470 ABC 2814 And DON"T FORGET to BALANCE IT! From a near stop with a clutched boat and then gas it hard I would think that any prop would cavitate a lot.

RE: Pipe question?
I wouldn't think that the O-rings should leak at all. Since they seal up after warming up I guess that's OK? You may want to check your motor for water after running for awhile. I've had leaking O-rings on the header to tuned pipe and found lots of water in the motor. Both too far in or out will cause you to not get on the pipe.

RE: For those of you without fullsize boats, how do you recover your RC boat?
Wallmart inflatable Kayak. About $78. Buy a 12 VDC air pump there too. I use my battery jumper pack to power it. As said above an inflatable is not the safest way to go because of the sharp fins and props on our boats. You have to watch what you are doing! If you can't accomplish that then don't buy one. A fishing pole and tennis ball works OK for the first 100 to 150 feet. After that get the Kayak. A few other things. Airs down and fits easily into any vehicle. Below 68 degrees it can crack when inflating it. To get around that on cold days I take it to the lake on the passenger side floorboard with the heater blowing on it. I've done that when it was 42 degrees at the lake without a problem. The oars that come with it are flimsy. I put a wooden shaft in the middle and reused the plastic paddles.

RE: rio 51 prop
The Grim Racer 67X105-3 is Aquacraft's recommended prop upgrade. I never ran the Fugi motor in my RIO so I do not know how well it will take that prop. With my Zenoah motors that prop is one I pick just to mess around and have fun with.

RE: rio 51 cooling problem.
I like having two water pick ups on all my boats. But I only have three of them. I found debris blocking some of the RIO stock parts. Make sure they are clean flow easily. Here is pick of the second water pick up to my RIO. Buy another water pick up tube and holder. Cut the end of the holder off and flip it upside down to be mounted on the other side of the rudder support. Buy 3 longer screws and 3 nyloc nuts and flat washers to attach it. I got the screws, nuts and washers at the ACE Hardware in my town.

RE: Should I Switch to Gas?
GO GAS and don't look back! I had (have) an electric boat. I spent a fortune in batteries just so that I could run for a little while at the lake. Then when you want to go faster the cost of the upgrades are reasonable but the cost of the LOST FUN is not! I was constantly bringing the boat in to check it for overheating on the batteries, motor and ECS. What a pain!!! AND THEN run the boat just a little too long and you smoke the batteries!! One good quaility set of 2 battery packs will run you over $100 and last just 12 minutes on the lake. Then you can wait 20 minutes while you recharge them. That is if they din't fry yet. I gave the electric boat to my grandson. He went out to the lake with me ONE TIME and used up the battery packs that I hadn't destroyed and then watched me while I ran my gas boat. I haven't been able to get him to take the electric boat out again. He knows it's a drag! He wants to run my gas boat! As far as the nitro boats go I see a few guys on the gas forum try nitro for a while and then come back to gas. I'm not sure why.

RE: Modded Zens
ORIGINAL: bondobuster Which is the best/most reliable modded Zen engine supplier?
I don't know. I can tell you about the motors that I have tried. 1. The first motor is a WWH M5. Very reliable but just a little slow for what I want. 2. Second was a cylinder I modified. Having experience porting and modifing motorcycle two stroke motors I sucessfully over ported it. Ran very fast but no bottom or mid-range. 3. Bought a Hanson Hornet and ran it for comparison. Way strong and fastest motor I own. 4. I modified another cylinder using the Hornet as a guide. Not as strong or as fast as the Hornet but close to it. 5. Bought an American RC Boats full mod cylinder. I have only ran it for the first time today. It was almost as fast and strong as the cylinder I modified. All of the motors and cylinders above are still running great except for the over ported cylinder which got an early retirement. I would have to think that all of the major suppliers would build a reliable full mod Zen. If they didn't we would read about it on this forum and then their sales would start to drop off.

RE: Rio 51 First Imoressions and a few questions
Just to reinforce the guys above. I think the IV bag is the best fuel tank for our boats. A 1400 MAH RX battery will run almost all day and a 1600 MAH will run all day. My "all days" run from 5 to 7 hours at the lake. ALSO! If and when you find that the stock steering servo won't always turn the boat well try the Tower Hobbies TS-150. At 193 OZ IN at 6 VDC it beats the stock servo by 100 OZ IN. You may also want to change you linkage ends to Monster Ball links 4-40.

RE: carb and intake
I always match the ports on the carb, isolator block and then to the motor. Don't forget to trim the gaskets back out of the way. On the other side I match the flange to the exhaust port and smooth out the sharp edges on the inside of the flange. Smoother, less restricted flow usually means more RPMs and horse power.

RE: zen 260 turned down piston
.010 is the total cut off the diameter of the piston. That would equal .005 per side. 5/16" equals 7.9 MM. I think we are talking close to the same thing here. This is what I turn my pistons down to. I have simply copied the pistons that I have purchased from WWH and Oneil Borthers. OPPS! That was a stock piston I purchased from Oneil Bros. The other one was from American RC and just looking at it (I don't have my mic handy) I would have to guess it only has .002 to .003 removed per side.
