RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
IFlyEm, Thank you for the expansion and helpful pictures. Expanding on my previous note as well, correct me if I’m wrong, but it appears that basically what you are saying is that a more forward CG increases the load factor. As you probably know better than me, load factor is a well-established variable defined as: n = L/W, where: n = load factor L = lift W = weight It is also well established that the load factor affects stall speed through the formula: Vst = Vs √n, where: Vst = stall speed Vs = stall speed in straight, level flight √n = square root of the load factor This is also why the stall speed increases during high load maneuvers, such as high bank turns and certain aerobatic moves. Wow, look at all that math in RCU!

RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
I see, IFlyEm. It seems that what you are saying is related to what some call the load factor, which is known to affect stall speed (though not in a linear fashion - root square, if I'm not mistaken) - interesting concept, which does make sense. Combined with the prop wash "factor" this all makes for interesting food for thought... Thank you both,

I think I get it, BlueBus. I must confess to never knowing that the lack of prop wash played a role in stall speed -a very interesting peculiarity of jets... Thank you,
One of the benefits of having an aft CG is a lower stall speed so that would make sense.
Could you please elaborate on that basic concept (for the non-aerodynamicist)? I always thought that, with regard to weight, the stall speed was affected only by the overall weight and not by the CG as well. Of course, it appears that I thought wrong... Thank you in advance.

RE: Horizon Hobbies Customer Service-Poor
My experience with HH has always been good. Regardless, the receiver battery that used to come (they are not necessarily including them now) with all Spektrum and JR DSM radios is virtually useless - 4-cell, Nickel-based. These receivers need 6V to be reliable, preferrably from A123 batteries, which cannot be sold by HH. If you are serious about your planes, get A123's for all your receivers. Good luck,

RE: SPEKTRUM-DSMX vs JR-DMSS
Would anyone know: 1) Can one copy model program settings on the SD card from a JR 11X DSMX to the new JR XG11 DMSS? Of course one would need to check everything afterwards, but is such a copying process viable? 2) Is the RG1131B 11ch DMSS receiver of the powersafe type? If not, how is the power distribution on this receiver? Can it handle lots of high current drain servos (I'd suppose so)? Thank you up front,
I have a YAK 55M 50cc I'm putting together and I have been reading about the fuel line that Taildragger is selling in his shop. It's blue and I believe it may be Viton but I'm really not sure but I thought I might try it on my new gasser. Anyone know anything about the blue fuel tubing I talking about?
I understand that this blue line from Traildragger RC that you are referring to is called Tygothane - a type of polyurethane compatible with biodiesel, as listed at McMaster-Carr, which also sells it. It remains flexible for a number of years and is certainly better than conventional Tygon, but it's not as good and long lasting as Viton. Your best options are, in that order: Viton > Tygothane > Tygon.

I am looking forward to building my very first jet soon. I have read conflicting info on the subject of fuel proofing in jets. I have tried, but found no poll on this subject. Perhaps this will bring up some interesting discussion. Thank you up front for your contribution. P.S.: The poll relates to kero power only.

RE: Life or a123 as a receiver pack
A comparable but perhaps simpler alternative to charge A123 packs in the plane is to simply purchase the A123 packs with a single 3 wire 20g combo connector, as available at Hangtimes. If you have an FMA CellPro Multi-4 digital fitted with the universal 3 wire A123 pack balance tap to charger cable, simply connect that cable to the pack's single 3 wire 20g combo connector to charge (no need to use the pack's discharge cables). Should the pack's single 3 wire 20g combo connector not be long enough to be easily accessible on or outside the plane, a simple aileron extension connected to it will do. I've been using this super convenient method (described in the Hangtimes site) with great success.

RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
Greetings, I saw the small hardware package that comes with the UF upgrade kit at an RC auction and noticed that, in addition to the carbon pegs (2 for the wing and 1 for the stab), there were what looked like carbon tubes, or sleeves, about the same size as the pegs (also 2 for the wings and 1 for the stab). What are these tubes/sleeves for? Btw, the pegs don't fit inside those tubes/sleeves, so I assume that they should not be for the holes in the fuse. Thanks up front,

For those willing to learn more about these batteries, I strongly recommend checking www.hangtimes.com. Click on "A123 Batteries FAQ", on the blue left hand column - a lot of very helpful info there. That site is also great for sales, customization, and service. I get all my A123's and related supplies from there. Steve Anthony, the owner, is also a fantastic source of information, should you need any specific answer not covered in the FAQ or setup guide (also found on the blue left hand column). He will happily respond to your email.

If you want an airframe that will require virtually no maintenance/adjusting and will last a very, very long time, you can't compare composite planes with wood planes. If you are willing to spend a little more, you should look at the Composite-ARF Extra 300 2.1m. Good luck in your selection.

RE: JR 11X and Rudder Gyro for Airplanes
In follow up to the set up options for the 11x, as discussed above, I found out another option for a practical way to set up the controls for a rudder gyro on an airplane without using flight modes, or a dedicated gyro switch. Simply assign the gyro gain function to the flap switch. This can be done in the “Gyro Sens menu. This will not affect the function of the flaps at all. So, for example, each of the three positions of the flaps (fully retracted, partially deflected, or fully deflected) would correspond to a gain of the gyro. A common set up would be: position 0 for fully retracted flaps and the gyro off - for normal flying; position 1 for partially deflected flaps and a “very active gyro (whether normal mode or heading hold, whichever you prefer) - for takeoff; and position 2 for fully deflected flaps and the gyro in whichever way you like for landing. This does not change how to initially activate the gyro in the system in the “Device Select menu – usually by selecting “Gyro within the “Aux 2- “Out options (if the Gain Change channel of the gyro is connected to the Aux 2 port in the receiver, of course). One minor disadvantage of this set up is the fact that you would not be able to change how the gyro would work during the landing pattern in “dirty configuration versus during actual landing, but this should not be a big deal as many don’t use the gyro for landing at all, just takeoff. A major advantage is that you don’t have to remember to turn the gyro on and off, nor use flight modes if you don’t want to. Thank you all once again for such a helpful thread.

Nope, checked that - all zeros. In any event, just for my education, does adding sub-trim to the connected servo always changes the gain at which the gyro becomes deactivated? Thanks for the input,

RE: JR 11X and Rudder Gyro for Airplanes
For those of you who might be interested: while setting up a JR G770 3D gyro for the rudder (JR 8411 servo) of one of my planes, I noticed that, in normal mode, the gyro gain settings that would turn off the gyro were not 49% or 51%, as suggested in the instruction manual, but rather 46% or 47%. I found this out serendipitously, not before several frustrating moments... I thought I might save some grief out there by sharing this.
