RE: sig 3d mayhem?
Finally flew it today with the new prop and CG set at 6". It flew fantastic, really light just floats around at 8.4lbs ready to fly. Blenders stop the plane in its tracks really flat with a bit of right aileron and at half throttle it just pin wheels. Waterfall to a tip spin is like a squirrel cage just rips, better have the batts tied down really good. The motor and prop are plenty strong and pull out from hover is not like a rocket but it is very good. With the CG set at 6", landing the plane takes a bit of down elevator, makes for some nice three point landings. Lipo's were just ambient temp after 8min flights. The motor was warm but not hot at all and the speed controller was the same. I expected the Lipo to be allot warmer due to the small space in the fuse but I must have created a pretty efficient airflow over it. Over all I am very pleased with the conversion and now I have a giant park flier that can be flown at the local park with out bothering the neighbors.[:D]

RE: sig 3d mayhem?
The big brown truck showed up last night with some new props. I am getting 1672W on the APC 20x8E. I bet down in Sacramento you would be over 1800W with the same set-up. I think it should be fine now for power, I might still be a little aft on the CG. I might add a spinner for some extra weight up front. Just for fun I put the plane together and powered it up in the garage, I could let go

RE: sig 3d mayhem?
I just converted mine, the proper CG is my current issue. I converted an existing model that was flown with a YS .91. I flew it on Saturday and the CG was close to 7" from the LE. It was a handfull to land. Since then I have moved everything forward and mounted the ESC to the motormount and I moved the Lipo a few inches forward as well. The CG is now at 6". I wanted to try Hobby King's cheap prices so I used all of their equipment for the conversion. I went with a Turnigy SK 50-65 380Kv/1820w motor, Turnigy large composite motormount, Turnigy Sentillion 100amp ESC, Rhino 6S 4900mah 25C, Turnigy BEC and a Xoar 18x8. The current system only yields 1,224 watts, I have ordered some bigger props. I want to prop it to at least 1,600 watts. The plane ready to fly is 8.4lbs. At my altitude I think a 19x8 or a 20x8 should get the plane into the same power to weight ratio that I was used to with the YS .91. The Turnigy motormount is not a direct replacement for the stock SIG mount as the Turnigy mount moves the thrust line up a 1/2", also the Turnigy mount will not bolt rite up to the existing mounting location without some modification. I will fly it again with the new CG and larger prop on Saturday 8/15. I will post the results.

RE: getting out of electric...
When I was 16 I had a heavy foam trainer with a Cox Golden Bee .049 for power, the plane could'nt take off from grass (not enough power) it had to be hand launched and it only had two channels. I think it cost me a couple of pay checks to acquire and I only got a couple of flights out of it before I crashed it into a wooden fence. Times have certainly changed. Good luck getting a 40% plane. My advice to you is to get that 40% and anything else you really want before you get married and start a family. I was 29 when I finally replaced that old trainer with a Thunder Tiger Trainer .40 and four whole channels. Times have certainly changed.

RE: getting out of electric...
I Fly both electric and gas. My electrics far exceed my gas in every area except noise. While my 30% YAK is a lot bigger than my electrics it does not out perform them. I am curious as to what electric planes you have been flying, small park flyers or performance 3-D? All of my electrics are brushless and are flown on lipoly's, with most in the 150-200 watt/lb ratio, they are very light and powerful and do every 3-D move with authority. I am just the opposite I wish all of my planes were electric. I dont like having to break-in engines and premix gas and oil. The maintenance on my gas is a lot more involved as gas motors are shakers. Last week I had a prop screw break off in the prop hub, I had to drill it out with a left hand drill bit and order some new screws. I am always finding loose bolts or losing canopy and or cowling screws due to vibration. I have not had the same amount of problems with my electrics. My point is that while gas is exciting it takes a certain amount of attention to detail that my electric planes don't. Find out what is involved with gas before you give up on electric. I think that when both types are set up correctly and daily maintenance is performed, before and after flying, they both offer the R/C pilot many hours of enjoyment. Gas planes tend to be bigger and bigger planes tend to take more time to transport and unpack and assemble and fuel up and start up and warm up and disassemble and repack and transport and unpack and put back into their storage area. Gas planes are cool but they tend to take some planning and time. I like the convenience of throwing an electric plane in the back seat and driving down to the local school or park and flying for a half hour and then just throw the plane back into the car without having to wipe it down and head a couple of blocks back home. Don't get me wrong, I will never give up my gas YAK but it only gets flown on a Saturday or Sunday and I have to drive a half hour out to the club field to fly it. I wish you good luck with gas, however, I think you should do yourself a favor and get a really good electric plane too from 3D Hobby Shop or Extreme Flight or one of the other performance oriented companies and fly it anywhere anytime.

What Size Propeller Screws
What size are the propeller screws for the 58cc ProSport? I had one break off and had to drill it out, now I have to replace it. I got lucky and did no damage to the threads in the prop hub.

Ignition Cap full of black oil
I have my MVVS 58 Prosport mounted inverted in a 30% YAK. I have not run the motor in over a year. I could not get the motor to fire this morning so I took the ignition cap off and found that it was full of black oil. I cleaned the oil out of the cap and replaced it on the stock spark plug (BRISK UR17). Two flips and the motor fired right up. I ran 24oz of fuel through it ( Motul synthetic- 40:1 -91 octane) . The motor ran very well I was pulling 6500 rpm on a NX 24x8 prop w/pitts muff. I pulled the ignition cap off and it was full of black oil. I pulled the spark plug out and it was completely black, seems like the motor is running too rich. The motor transitions well from idle to 6500 rpm no hick-ups its smooth but not instantaneous. It seems like the plug does not have a good seal. Is this common? Do you think a new plug might seal better? Do you think the motor is set too rich? I have not noticed any oil in the ignition cap previous to this incident.

Got a real solid 13 min flight in today, the plane still does it all really well. KE is king! and the MVVS 58 ProSport on a NX 24x8 pulls like a freight train, now that the motor is good and broken in I might switch back to a 24x10! I cant say enough about the characteristics of the plane it flys really nice lines and can 3D too. It makes it look too easy. I'd still be flying except that I lost two cowl bolts durring the flight and had no spares, so off the the LHS.

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
Yes, I got everything from Troy Built Models, you have to remember also that I am replacing TnT aluminum landing gear, not the original landing gear. My original landing gear only lasted four landings and I replaced it with the TnT gear. The TnT landing gear has been great and I am going to keep it around to replace the CF when it goes south on me. I just want to get some weight off of the YAK so I am starting with the landing gear and then I will also go to lipos and regulators soon. The CF gear I purchased is wider than the fuse and looks a little aquard but I wanted tall gear for the 24" prop and this was the best fit for the length. I'll get some pics tonight.

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
It will take more than the sun. Got two more flights in today and its still flying very well, I had alot of fun with it. I got the CF gear mounted on it this afternoon and now I have to rebalance, I think I droped 8oz with titanium axles and Kavan lite 3.5" wheels. Do your YAKS flip out of a flat spin with more that half throttle? Mine does, I have to pay attention when Im doing a blender next time. I might be adding a bit of aileron and when the motor spinns fast enough it flips out of the flat spin. It happened a couple of times today but when it was happening I just whent into a nother flat spin and forgot to check what was happening.

Wade Can you use a heat gun to remove the unwanted twist in the wings? Also, you could add a little weight to the right wing and check the fuse and stab to make sure they are straight. I have the same problemwith a different plane and I did as I suggested. It is not perfect but it is now flyable with much less trim needed. Good Luck Barry

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
Falconwings, Graphtech makes CF gear for it and TnT offers both aluminum and Graphtech CF. Troy Built Models sells Graphtech, I just ordered a set of CF for mine but I like my gear tall for the 24" props I run so I got some taller gear that I will have to modify to fit. I ordered the gear made for the Aerotech 28% YAK-54, its 11" tall and 19" wide, but the top along the fuse is 9" so I might have to cut it and make it narrower to fit. You can buy CF made for the BME, I think it is the same as the Quique 85" YAK or you can search their catalog and find a set that meets your needs based on the given dimensions.Good Luck. I am turning a NX 24x8 at 6,600 rpm on an MVVS 58 Proport. What numbers are you getting with the DA-50 and what prop?

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
After a long layoff from this plane. (series of unfortunate events) I finally got a flight in today. The MVVS 58 Prosport is turning a NX 24x8 at 6,600 rpm and it has plenty of verticle power even at 5,000 ASL. The best features of my YAK at 18lbs, ya its a Gen I, is the flat spinns and high alpha knife edge. This YAK KE's from one end of the field to the other and I turn it around in KE and do it all over again. At 18lbs its too heavy to fly like a foamy. 17lbs would make a huge difference in the harrier as I get the wing rocking a little bit and it doesnt feel solid. The plane represents well and is a very solid and straight flyer, I got alot of complements on it. Now that I am satisfied with the performance of the engine I might just put the YAK on a diet and go with some CF landing gear and lipo's. I still am leary of composite gear as aluminum is so easy to bend back into shape. Anyone got some pics of some tall CF gear? Diamondave, I think the 58cc at 5,000 feet is plenty of power for this plane, infact its foamy power. I am thinking that my 58cc will be better suitted for an AM 33% YAK at say 21-22lbs. I think your 80cc will be too much power and weight for the BME, the plane really needs to be 17lbs or lighter. As it is I mostly fly at half throttle or less, so you would always be flying at around 1/3 throttle. It would be an awsome verticle climber though![:D] Good luck with what ever you decide and have fun. You guys with the GEN II YAKS must be having a blast, less weight and larger wings. Im so envious, I am almost tempted to get a GEN II.

RE: 58cc 1/4 throttle burble
Pe, I am running a Slimline Pitts for a DA-50 modified to fit the 58 and the pipes have been shortened by one inch. I failed to mention this, sorry. I was wondering if some of the low end burble had to do with the muffler. I leaned the low end about a 1/16 turn and it sounded a little better. I flew it today and every one said it sounded a little rich still but was acceptable for a single cylendar motor. I gave it another 1/16 turn lean and ran it up, it sounds better still, so I will fly it again tomorrow. Keep us posted as to how the MTW TD110 canister performs, I am interested in your numbers with a 24x10 prop.

RE: 58cc 1/4 throttle burble
Yes you are right, most of the time I am blipping the throttle, but sometimes for just a slow flying rolling circle I can get away with 1/4 throttle and just fly around at that setting and when I think the motor is loading up I will pull verticle and power up then stall to a waterfall. Waterfalls are great becuse you are on and off the power and it keeps the motor running clean. I fly with others who have twins and their motors have alot of run time. I dont notice any irregularities in their motors from idle to high power, their twins always sound very tunned and even to me, so mabey I am comparing my single to their twins and it is not a fair comparison. I dont have any issues with the motor I was just a little concerned that I was running it too rich. I will lean it a little and in time Im sure I wil find the sweet spot.
