RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
It's normal you distroy your homemade sparkcoil, I distroy maybe 10 of this homemade coils. Sparkcoils need more isolation as normal, also between the wires must be placed isolationpaper. Wait for your factory-sparkcoil befor you test the CDI again.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
Is't a homemade sparkcoil your using ? How do you wind the HV-coil and the sparkcoil ? The easyway the reduce the voltage is decrease L3 or L1.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
How do you test the voltage, with or without a resistor ? A open Voltage is allway higher without a load.

RE: TCI-ignition
There are two mistake into the schematic, there are two C7's and two C3's C7 - 10n/400V = C6 on the layout. C3 - 220u/25V is not on located the layout, this C3 must be placed somewhere. I'll correct this two *errors* for the schematic, into the layout there are no *errors*.

RE: TCI-ignition
I check the PCB, put the missing C on the pCB and L into the schematic, but I can't find any layout errors. Mark the errors you find with red, scan the paper and send it to me please. If you want to tune your engine, you can use Streetdyno or Powerdyn. Both programsare tuningdevices using a soundcard. TCI-ignition
Here you can find the schematics http://www.modelbouw.gompy.net/tci/ This is a modification of our CDI-ignition http://www.modelbouw.gompy.net/newcdi/newcdi.htm. It's a start, the PCB for this designe isn't ready yet. For the bobine / ignitioncoil you can use any smal 12 Volt car / moped type of 4 Ohm.

Great to see the ignition is working on your engine. Now you can play with the ignitioncurve into the Exelsheet to find more rpm.

It doesn't matter if the Voltage is high and te current is low or visa versa. P= UxI, if P=constant, U can be high and I low or if U can be low and I high.

RE: diy cdi
ORIGINAL: boating around I will dedicate this post to the cdi here: http://www.modelbouw.gompy.net/newcdi/newcdi.htm With all respect to the designer I feel it necessary to outline some errors I found with this project. I have built and tested this cdi. Built as outlined it ''will not work''.
If you can't read or relivate schematics, you can't blame the designerS. Sometimes it is necessary to use your own brains to complete a project. BUT, WE (the designerS of this hopeless CDI-project) are very curious to your CDI and off ccourse.....is your designe without any errors. Have a nice day and please, don't awnser or send any mail to us.

With your experiens you can write the help file for us.
2) The line of hex ''I'' posted is correct.
Everything on the cdi-website is correct, or did you write your own (hex) programm ?
3) The sensor connections were in fact wrong and have since been corrected, in red. Not to mention led connection, parts list, I could go on. I suggest you also get it write, specialy if you are going to attack someone.
Nobody is perfect and we are not a professional company with ten or more employees who can correct wat was "wrong". Noboby was payed for wat he or see have done, it have cost me only a lot of money to built the prototypes. But now you can help us with your knowhow to write a FAQ and coorect wat was / is wrong.
4) Fault finding is necessary when something doesn't work, call it what you like, you have no idea.
You get a "end product" and you forgot all the work wat we have done befor you found this "end product" on the internet. RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
@Charlie. Not only the C-code, but also the code of the Exelfile has to be changed if you will use a other ocsilatorfrequentie. I don't understand why you will change the ocs-time, it's not so easy to change the timing. The hallsensor has to be placed at the normal ignitiontimingpoint of your engine, somewhere between 28 and 32 degrees.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
They want to buy the compleet project, but it's a opensource project. Opensource projects belong to all the people. I never sell hobby projects, hobby project must be for free. I think they will rewrite the code and make a easy (webbased?) menu to manage the advance. You don't need differend programs like Exel and MicroC to change the CDI-curve, only one program can do this. I ask some programmers todo this also for me, but it take a lot of time to write this kind of programs.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
ORIGINAL: boating around A couple more questions concerning making an ignition coil and I should be done. From what I read a ferrite core will work? Can be bought at Dick Smiths and can be found in am radios. Supply is 6 volt, what voltage does transformer see? The diode will drop it 0.6 volt I think.
Correct.
What voltage should ignition coil see? 200 volt?
I hope between 300 and 600 Volts.
What voltage should spark plug see? 20,000 volt?
Depent wat kind ignitioncoil you are using. Small enginges like weedeathers have a ignitionvoltage between 6,000 and 8,00 Volts. Big enginges like cars have a ignitionvoltage between 10,000 and 20,000 Volts. If the compression of the engine will be higher, the ignitionvoltage must also be higher.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
Hi Dave, You have to remove the walls, I get about 300-350 turns on this transformer. The size of the wire doesn't matter.....but you have to know: If the Voltage is high - the current can be low. If the Voltage is low - the current must be high. The current makes the wire size, low current thin wire - high current thick wire. The ignitioncoil needs: high Voltage or high cuurent. Becourse you don't get enough winds of thick wire on this small coil, you need thin wire to get a high Voltage. Some where between 0.13 and 0.25 will good enough to get 400 Volt with enough current. But there is a limmit you can do, it's not possible to take very-very thin wire to rice the Voltage. A coil like this can handle about 500-600 Volt without blast the wires.

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
ORIGINAL: jpanhalt The point here is not to criticize or to redesign the circuit, but to find available components that can be substituted and will work. Even in the USA, I am not about to buy the minimum quantity of 0.1 uF aluminum electrolytic capacitors from DigiKey.
I don't think this is a point, over 100,000 people read the CDI topics and no one complains about the componets we have used. We have try to use no exotic componets and for all componets are replacements to buy. But again, it's a opensource project and if you can change the CDI in positive way be my gast. If your designe will be better, I'm happy to place the designe on our website with your name on it.

RE: Opensource CDI ignition
If you are using a higher value to C7, the ocsilatrofrequentie will be lower. If the ocsilatorfrequentie is lower, the load of C6 will be lower. If C6 have a low loadfrequentie, the sparkintencie will be lower. This CDI is made for high rpm (>25,000), the commecial CDI you can buy handles till <10,000 rpm. You can change C3 into a 0.1 uF MKM capacitor opens theT1 gate for X-time. But.....the time with a MKM will be shorter then when your using a aluminum electrolytic. The spark will also be shorter, less spark, if the X-time you create is shorter. But, it's a opensource project so you can change everything you like. If you can make it better, be my gast [8D]

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
The problem is the ocsilator, if you read back we have the same problem. I don't know if the ocsilator runs to fast or stopped, it's hard to say wat happend. A solution can be to creat the ocsilatorsignal into the pic. In schematic we used the ocsilatorsignal is very durty and not reable. You never know the exact signal the coil / transistor / r / c will make. It works, but sometimes you can't get enough frequentie to load the C to max. This means the max rpm is also low and a not a bride spark.
