RE: Virus warning
ORIGINAL: Harlan As of sometime Thursday, it appears that I can get anyplace on RCU without being warned of a virus by AVG. I know AVG was working on this, but they couldn't have done anything about it if the RCU management hadn't taken our comments seriously. so, I think kudos have been earned by the RCU management for getting things squared away, and AVG deserves credit for pointing out the problems. The guys who hung in there with both RCU and AVG should be congratulated for not giving in to the temptation to change websites and anti-virus programs. You made the right decision. Harlan Now let's all knock on wood.
That's great news. They do deserve a hand here for standing up and taking care of things. These problems are also reported to be happening at another major rc forum, but they tend to not acknowledge issues brought up by members. The guy who started the thread with the Bert and Ernie [:D] comments would have probably been canned there. Good to see that they took care of the issues here, rather than taking it out on him, which is a better way to solve problems.

RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
ORIGINAL: 103/17 I agree losses cost money. So to avoid them change what you do that causes them right? BTW, I never thought Tower had high prices..........
I think you completely missed the point of my statement. I don't think they have high prices either, and I don't believe that I stated it. There are a lot of people today who look only at price, and always say "I can get this or that cheaper at some other place." The purpose of the statement is that Tower supports customers when items are damaged, and some places don't, which is why Tower is not as low priced as some other places. I thought it was pretty clear. Maybe it would have been even more clear if I compared them to other places that do not have good support, but I thought that would be something that would cause a controversy. BTW, I was never trying to disagree with your statements in any way.

RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
ORIGINAL: 103/17 Great Planes Gee Bee. Yup had that problem. Original fuse cracked on top. They sent a new one, that one was all but shattered when it showed up, next one looked like a factory second with fiberglass finger prints on the painted surfaces. Finally i called upset and asked that they inspect what they were shipping and package it correctly. The last one came undamaged with a big run in the paint in the tail end by the stab holes. I gave up and accepted it and built it......... Anderson and Tower had some headaches with that airplane for sure...........
One thing these comments of damaged goods in shipping explain, is why some places have to charge a bit more. We here a lot of complaints of goods damaged in shipping, and probably only a fraction of them. The more I read these posts, the more it explains why Tower has to charge a bit more than some of the really low priced discount places, that would never even send a single replacement, let alone several. One way or another, somebody had to pay for these losses. I'm sure they did have some headaches with that plane, and may have searched through a number, just to find an undamaged one with a big run in the paint.

RE: Someone mentioned warped wing
If you're using moisture, use light wipes along the side of the framer/s which you want to expand. Too much will soak the entire spar and defeat the purpose. One nice thing about iron-on covering, is that after enough intentionally applied twist and heat reshrink cycles, you can usually get a warped wing to finally stabilize. Of course it requires some overshoot, and sometimes a number of tweaks done over the course of some time, to finally get it to stay where you want it.

RE: Guillows planes ?
ORIGINAL: BillinIndiana  I like the way their fuselages are ''stick built'' . That's the only thing I dislike about the SIG. The long panels of balsa that make up the fuse. It just looks like more fun to build the other way.
I like it too. The Guillows construction method is one of the greatest influences I had, that got me into scratch building. Pretty much any plane can be built using the Guillows keel-and-former method, and a 3-view with sections. I've converted at least 10 Guillows planes to electric which fly, mostly pretty well.

RE: mode 1
It's probably like one of those statistics, such as that motorcycle riders without helmets have less injuries. Apparently the reason is that the more experienced riders tend to be the ones without helmets. Mode 1 seems more difficult to learn than mode 2, but offers a different experience once the person has mastered it. Seems likely that the Mode 1 flyers simply have to be the type of people who are more dedicated to take up the challenge in the first place, to take on 2 stick flying. Flying with mode 2 can be easily done with one hand holding the trans, and just your thumb from the same hand doing all the flying. I've done it while filming numerous times.
ORIGINAL: jefflangton Ups beating up packages......really?? I dont believe that. (Sarcasm!!!) That could be a whole separate rant of a forum. Btw, never had packing probs from tower. Lucky I guess
It's understandable for you to bring that up. I won't even accuse you of being sarcastic, since: It's kind of difficult to not bring that up in any vendor specific thread, as many including myself believe it is irresponsible to ship anything other than undamageable iron blocks using UPS.

RE: Turnigy Lipos
ORIGINAL: Larry Dudeck I have made direct comparisons between the 30~40C Turnigy and 20C Zippy Flightmax. Both batteries are used in the same F89 (Avatar) under the same conditions, flight durations, etc., etc. The Turnigy's are a distant second place to the lower C Zippy packs. The Turnigy's go flat after 2~2.5 minutes, the Zippers are good for 5 minutes easy. Perhaps my Turnigy's were mis-labled.

ORIGINAL: ACES&8s Turnigy lipos I have tried puff and give up early on in life. Compared to Zippy Flightmax, you pay more, get 1/4 the life/performance. I use the batteries to max limits, but charge no faster than 2 hour, after cooling them. My Zippy Flightmax last a full season. Rhino don't last. Turnigy don't last. They 'C' rating understood, Turnigy cannot sustain the C level it represents. I've tried 3amphour and 2.2amphour. Wasted money. By the way...balance charge. Charger with balance mode, or use a Astro Blinky. With the blinky you have to set up a slow charge rate. Pick is of 30-40c 3 amp/hour
Those reports are why I'm speculative about lipos, where all the brands are most likely labeled in-house. There are various marketing philosophies: One is to price accordingly, based on performance and quality, and hope that the mix of customers will buy all your product. A second is to make sure you sell all your stock, which can create a dilemma when using the first method. When I hear of the lower priced brand outperforming the higher priced brand, which I've heard more than once, I question the consistency of the labeling method, and that it may be inconsistent due to efforts to sell out all the stock. I personally prefer consistency. Charge a bit more for the good performing cells and don't even sell the poor performing ones at all, or sell them very cheap and honestly rated. Overall marketing strategy can sometimes explain why some places must charge more than others for lipos of equal performance.

RE: NOTAM from Hell
ORIGINAL: bradpaul  Received notices of NOTAMS from AMA for this weekend in Florida.    Obama is having a ''bus tour'' and it is shutting down RC for about half the state this weekend. I appreciate the AMA letting me know what a PITA this election campaign will be in swing states like Florida.      Now just what is the danger of a RC plane to a ''bus tour''???????  I know that the AMA cannot help what the FAA issues as NOTAMS just venting. Brad
My good friend lives 1/2 mile from the Kerry estate in Fox Chapel, outside of Pittsburgh PA. He left his house and went away for a few days, the last two times Kerry and Obama used the place for functions, since they blocked all the roads off. I'm sure they would have come and arrested me, if I went to his house and flew a plane in his backyard field. As for what is the danger, you now live in a country like Iraq was, with Saddam Hussein. Hussein banned rc flying, as he thought it could be used in that 1 in a million chance that somebody could successfully attack him with an rc model. Your country and leaders are obviously now doing the same thing as Hussein did, for the same reasons. They see it the same way as the threat an older woman poses, while flying her late husband's 90mph vintage Piper Cub many miles away from the president's 600mph airliner. They needed to have F16s strafe her, ground her, and arrest her.

They sent me a landing gear assembly for a large scale plane, instead of a GP 30" Hellcat cowl. They took care of it quickly however, and sent the cowl in a few days with Priority shipping, and didn't want the landing gear returned. The packer should do a better job, but at least they took care of it free of charge. The person I contacted at Tower was polite and took care of the problem.

Acknowledge the good customer service and move on. No one is perfect, not even you. Vince
I wouldn't be happy. Most people are perfect at doing bone simple tasks, such as making sure that a copy looks like a useable plan. It's a hassle to have to deal with issues that you shouldn't have to. Let's see, the last time I painted a room I should have painted half of the ceiling. After moving all their furniture back in place, I should have told them that I didn't want to hear one iota of complaints about them having to go to the hassle of moving it all again, so I can come back in 3 weeks and finish the other half that I missed, after making them wait 3 weeks after paying me in the first place to paint the first half.

I haven't had problems getting on, but there have been some really slow page loading times, and I'm not using AVG. RE: Camarillo, CA Channel Islands Condors Field Closure
ORIGINAL: Teachu2 3) The club has failed to be proactive in fire prevention and has done nothing to show a good-faith effort to mitigate the fire hazard inherent in the operation of models. Two plastic barrels of water and a couple of buckets, a couple of fire extinguishers, half a dozen buckets of sand??? Anything???
That's the first thought I had. Actually the second, but they are almost the same. When something is shut down, somebody probably wanted to do it anyway, so don't give them a reason. In dry areas, the flyers should have had something to put the fire out, before requiring public services assistance, which then allowed someone else to make it their problem. I just gave away a 20lb fire extinguisher a few days ago to a friend, to have in his garage. They're not hard to come by, or terribly expensive.

RE: Virus warning
ORIGINAL: buz2au Bit hard to post a report in the thread when you can’t even get into RCU, it’s the only site that is being blocked by AVG out of the hundreds that I visit each week. Like most other people I just go over to RCGroup, if RCU can't sort this problem soon I think it will mean a big drop off in patronage.
That's a fair and honest statement. Hopefully another fair and honest statement along those lines is: I'm starting to wonder if one of the forums "competitors" has anything to do with these problems. I say "competitors", as money is a much bigger issue to some places than here, as some are all about the money, verified by numerous actions observed over time. Being all about the money, there is one place I can think of, that I wouldn't put it past them to cause issues. Not a lovely thing to say, but it is arrived at by the same method as other suspicions eventually become known as accepted facts, which are unusual coincidences. This is quite a coincidence: "it’s the only site that is being blocked by AVG out of the hundreds that I visit each week"

RE: AMA to close the AMA Discussions Forum
ORIGINAL: littlecrankshaf The rules at the AMA site could have been rendered into just one; If we (anyone of us) don't like what you post we will remove it and if you do that enough we will ban you... That just about covers it.
There's another forum that does that also. Always denied, but there are more than enough people who have attested to it with more than enough examples. What I've observed is that by the time people start speaking out about it, the issue is well known to impartial users of the forum that spend much time there. Even if you get a crowd of people posting about the issues, they would still deny it though. In their case however, they wisely do their best to neither confirm or deny the claims, simply not responding to them.

They really should put the icon there to remind people of it, even if they have no photos, and just place a zero next to it. It's the only thing that reminds me to keep entering planes in the gallery. It would be really nice if they did the same thing here, and allowed us to link our Wattflyer galleries. 75 planes is a lot of planes to re-enter! http://www.wattflyer.com/photopost/showgallery.php?ppuser=4451&cat=500
ORIGINAL: init4fun
ORIGINAL: Mr-Punk Hey Guys and Gals, first time poster long time reader. I was hanging at the flying field today and me and 2 other guys were flying and chatting a bit and got into a small debate about the origins of flight.  We didn't know if it was 1903 or 1904 when the Warner brothers made the first powered flight with a human on board..  I thought it was 03 other guy thought it was 04.  The engine was a issue too.  I thought it was a early Ford engine before ford became a company.  The other guy figured it was a early Briggs b4 he met Stratton.   I'm really glad whenever with whatever engine they did it with in Kitty Hawk SC they they made that flyer fly. :-)  All I know the 3 of us had fun today.  I have my 4-star 40 with os46 the other guy has a big stik 40 with a Magnum 46 and the other other guy has an electric helicoper that is pretty sweet. Peace, J
[:)] No , Dude , Warner Bros was Bugs Bunny and such .... Now , As to the Wright Bros , yes , their first flight is in the history books as 1903 . in December . A funny and true side note here , is that the very first Harley Davidson motorbike was built several months earlier in that same year ! (I'm surprised that HD has never used that fact in advertising ; Something along the lines that they made man able to fly on the road before Wilbur and Orville made it happen in the air !) ..... Anyway , To continue , Yes , the Wrights are credited in the history books as first , but as with EVERY ''invention'' , these gains always come as a result of building upon the already existing technology . Could Edison have invented his light bulb had electricity not been harnessed earlier by others ? For the true origins of human flight , even powered human flight , ya gotta go all the way back to DaVinci , and follow through the work being done in both France and the US in the mid/late 1800s , , , A notable name for research is Samuel Langley . He was determined to acheive STEAM POWERED flight , and by some accounts , came close ! ( [:D] The original ''Steampunk'' ?!?! ) PS , before ya ask , NO ! Amelia Earhart was most certainly not the ''First Female Pilot'' as lots of today's generation seem to think . She just got , famously , lost ........ For the first ladys in the pilot seat ya gotta go back to Gals like Harriet Quimby , although i'm not too sure info on her is as readily available as that of later women like Earhart .
The cuyote has a long history in aviation pioneering, including such subjects as Acme homebuilts, pioneering glider experiments, as well as being the first to develop the human jet pack.
