RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
I mounted my PTR 36 in a similar fashion. Put the fuselage vertical. Set the motor without the spinner on the firewall. If your cowl is tight, put wax paper between the cowl and fuselage. Then place your spinner backplate on the crank and adjust the motor. If you slip it off carefully, not disturbing the motor, then you can mark the motor mounts positions. billrad

RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
I am sure mine was tail heavy, and heavy overall. I had no issues landing it with the first motor, a 26. I am flying it now with a three blade Biela 17 X 10 prop on a PTE 36R motor. The motor has plenty of power, rear exhaust and rear carb. It would haul it straight up if need be. Our field, however is not level. Makes it interesting, especially if you are landing with the ground falling away from the plane. billrad

Cuttign carbon fiber plate for retracts
So I have a carbon fiber plate I'd like to get cut to a pattern to reinforce retract mounts. Anyone know where I could send it for cutting? thanks billrad

RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
Well, my luck was about the same. I have the sierra retracts and the anti rotation arms are almost more trouble than they are worth. The bolts are so big that if you do not use spacers on the axles, the wheels will rub when the shock is depressed. This may also lock them up, as I found out one day on landing. Recently, on a new motor maiden my bird was tail heavy and I managed to get it around a few times, but landing was too difficult and I ripped both retracts out of the wing. The rear part of the wood mounts stayed in, but the weak point, the fronts, came out. Now I can make them stronger, with carbon fiber reinforcement plates. I figured it would happen sooner or later :). Not a big deal. I already went to Home Depot and got perfectly matched paint from BEHR. It was tail heavy because of the full cockpit and full pilot. I thought I had it balanced correctly, but nope. onward! billrad

RE: TROY BUILT MODELS
Hey all, FWIW part of what I do is build Ecommerce systems for companies just like TBM. Shipping is the absolute hardest item to design and "tune". No matter who the shipper, all charge by weight and dimension. For example, USPS has a 75LB limit, while UPS is 150 lbs. Things like that. Also there are dimensional limits. You may see a tire or a fender shipped with just a label, etc. And shipping rates are different for businesses with accounts vs. people walking into a counter at an office. Some companies take the order, box it all up, and slap it on an in house scale, and get a quote. Others hit a web service for the cost, transmitting dimension and weight limit to get a cost. Still others build their own "regional tables" based on UPS tables "adjusted" for handling and goofy sizes, etc. Part of the problem they run into is shipping a 5 gallon bucket and a small box of nails to the same address. A human shipper can put the box of nails into the bucket, and ship it. A totally automated system cannot do that. The AI doesn't exist yet for the medium to small vendor. If I ship a book in a flat rate box, I save money on shipping, although a person a short distance away may not like the price. But if someone orders too many books far away, I can't ship that way because I can only cram so many into a box. It really gets nutty for the vendor. Jewelry is crazy like that two. If I go flat rate, I can cram 100 $6.00 earrings into the same flat rate box, yet if I ship only one earring, that customer gets hosed on the shipping. knowing this, if the cost of shipping is within my "gut" check, I buy it. It is a very imperfect system. I won't even discuss tracking... billrad

RE: Carb / motor issue w/walbro 257
Well folks, I have solved the mystery, with everyone's help. Short answer - air leak (Or as I prefer to see it, my own d*** a** mistake :). When I had replaced the insulator block with new gaskets a while back. I had trouble reaching the cross tip bolts, so I found two hex head bolts for the job. I had to cut them down to fit snugly. Well today, while trying to get it to keep running, I just happen to see that the bottom side of the insulator was loose, like a sliver. I am not sure I would have ever noticed it. I had tugged on the carb and everything. It seems the lower hex head bolt was a hair too long. While it was very tight, it was hair too long, and only looked and felt like it had the insulator block held tight. Once I trimmed this bolt down, and snugged up the insulator to the cylinder it ran perfectly. thanks to all! Billrad

RE: A123 battery too much for 4.8 V rated servos.
Well, I am running a lot of planes with A123 batteries without regulators. But, I have a scale FW-190, and prior to a test flight, I smoked 4 hitec servos inside the fuselage (using ar7000 receiver). One on throttle, the other two on elevator and rudder. I also smoked the retract HS-81 servo. Everything worked fine on the bench before going to the field. I have since put a regulator in that plane. I already had one on a separate A123 ignition battery. Not sure what happened, but I smoked them good. billrad

yes, the servo just connects to a link attached to the green retainer base. It slides back and forth under the wooden plate. The white servo arm part that sticks out and protrudes into the bomb keeps the bomb from sliding when the green retainers are moved by the servo. hope this helps. I have only used it to release the tank before a flight. I have not flown with it yet, but I hope to this spring. billrad

RE: What is with Marketplace engine prices?
Once an Army cook told me "I have a motto - if you don't like it, don't eat it" if the price is right, buy it. If not, pass it up. If you get your price, sell it. If not, keep it. Of course some are overpriced. And some are given away. And some are just right. If you ask someone to take less, and they agree, yipee. If they ignore you, so what. Move on. Don't take it personal. Save that energy for something important. If you don't want to buy online, and only go to swap meets for used items, good for you. For me, practically everything I have is used. Most bought online. So what. Once an Army cook told me...... billrad

yes, you can insert reducers in the lines, combined with the adjustment on the valves. You can make them come up slow, and go down slow. It's not perfect, but pretty good. good question - I thought I knew how, but... Simply click the "YouTube" icon located on the far right of the toolbar above in the editor window. 2) This will provide the opening and closing tags for your video. Now all you need is to find the YouTube video number and place it within the tags. 3) So you will now see {YOUTUBE} {/YOUTUBE} , now go to the YouTube page with your video. Look in the address bar at the top. You are looking for the web address. It should look something like this, which is the address for the video below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG4AgRBvIes&feature=youtu.be

RE: KMP / YT FW-190 Build Thread
Sorry for the confusion. One servo for elevator, one for rudder. I also installed a full cockpit from tys planes, so I had to build up a higher servo mount for them, so that the pushrods would clear the bottom of the cockpit floor. Servocity makes nice metal mounts now that would do the job also, I think. I built up mine out of wood. billrad

my kit came with an elevator joiner for internal pull-pull, so I just ran the pushrod to it with a steel clevis. I reinforced the joint of the plate attached to the joiner wire. I ran a pushrod to the rudder, then on the other side of the rudder, I ran a small pushrod back to the tailwheel. billrad

I didn't use the pull pull - I went with two single carbon pushrods internally. my tailwheel is a dubro mounted to a vertical wooden plate in the front of the wheel well. The wooden plate has a hole in it for the pushrods for rudder and elevator above the tailwheel bracket. billrad
