RE: Sepulveda Basin
I agree with Rare Bear on the cracks coming back soon. Sorry I couldn't kick in 80 grand for a resurface instead of slurry. And when I look at the big picture of flying at the Basin in the middle of a major Metro area - still going after all these years - it's one of the wonders of the world. And most people I talk to agree. Considering it's a public park with no field marshal - remember the Basin's motto - " The best thing about the Basin is no one is in charge. And the worst thing about the Basin is no one is in charge" - . . . and considering all of the years of carnage and mayhem - from newbies, and from Kim, and all of the lockouts and mistakes and expiration dates that came due - . . . and then factor in the ROUTINE, DAILY ceiling violations from the Pattern guys - its IMPOSSIBLE to practice an IMAC routine at the Basin and stay under 400 with the size planes they use BTW. . . . . . and consider only one major injury - It's an absolute miracle we can still fly here. I realize this post sounds critical - My intent is to help. The Basin's survival is based on self-policing - which in my experience is a failed policy. So many people out there believe the field is locked in by the contracts. This is a dangerous myth. Flying too high will trump any lease, resulting in a padlocked gate. And that would be a one way door - no re-opening it. According to my discussion with the VN airport operations officer on one of his many trips to the field for ceiling violations, there are pilots and others at the VN airport who are ACTIVELY trying to shut us down for flying high. Regarding self-policing - I have been responsibly active in helping pilots to understand why to stop flying high when I see it, and I have to beg for someone to back me up before I kindly approach a violator - because I'm not built like Leroy. I can't keep your field open by myself, guys. We all have to realize what a valuable venue we have, and we ALL have to do our part to keep it. That is the reason for the strong words, not because I'm mad at my dog or somethin'. Flying at the basin has given me some of the best years of my life, and I am so grateful it's still going. Bill

RE: BEST RC Flight Sim??
ORIGINAL: JoelStolarski When flying a real model with heat, sweat bugs in your eyes and the potential to crash the model which doesn't reset itself, then there is that significant difference between sim and the real model. So use a sim as an aid to test model parameters and to teach yourself orientation.
I agree. Especially the bugs in the eyes. And bees that land on your hands while you are doing a touch and go and you shake the bee off and bounce the plane off the runway. Sims are great like you said for orientation and basic skills. I thought that's all there was to it until I went out there in the real world.

RE: Which JR\Spectrum receiver did you crash with?
My race Mustang went in hard recently - 9303 AR700 no stick response, batt right off the charger tested with a half amp load, batt connector safety taped. I think it could have been signal shadowing. As the plane came out of the turn headed toward me, the engine was in front of the main receiver and the satellite. At our field, we call this area the Bermuda Triangle so many planes go down. Several of us are now suspecting signal shadowing. Sorry about all of the planes you guys lost by lockouts - It really hurts more that way than when you stuff one in yourself, doesn't it? I'm going with the 4 satellite JR 922 and dual batt A123 setup. 4 recievers, 2 batts, 2 switches - Redundant everything except my thumbs. Each wingtip is going to get a satellite so no chance of shadowing issue. When it went in at 145 mph, it made me want to quit flying, as it landed near the flight line and really spooked me. In ten years, maybe radio issues will be a thing of the passt. Good luck to all of you guys Bill
ORIGINAL: wind junkie Thanks for the tips Bill. Yea, these YS's really sing!
Yea they do - even after you stuff them in the ground. I checked the crank run out with a dial indicator and it was perfectly straight. Hopefully, the bearing is ok. My 110 FZ runs fine after removing the airbox and flushing the crankcase with about a quart of fuel. Put it back together, and it started right up. I think when the plane snapped, it bled off a lot of speed and as I fought for control, it was flapping around like a bird with one oil soaked wing. Sorry for that gruesome illustration, but it looks like all it cost me was an airframe and a satellite receiver. Everything else seems ok. Do you guys fly a crashed receiver, or do you send them in for a check up??? Bill

RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
Hey Lebus - You are going to have to wait a while longer because I stuffed my Petie in real hard today. I've got another one almost ready to go, so I won't make the same mistake with that one. One gear leg would not retract on the first and only flight of the day today. The gear had worked perfectly - maybe fifty or more cycles with not a hitch, and then after take off, one leg was still down. Here's where I made my mistakes. I've heard it said when you are flying a warbird, not to make impulsive maneuvers. Plan in advance all moves. I had forgotten that I had changed my elevator dual rates to only high rate with a lot of expo. My thinking was that I would not have to switch rates after landing to have full elevator deflection to keep the tail down on the touchdown roll. Wrong. What happened was this. I had only one flight with this configuration, and it was a month ago, so I forgot this setup and thought I could yank on the elevator on low rates and not snap it. Well, a guy standing next to me suggested I do a high g loop to see if that would help pull the gear up. Bad Idea. I impulsively rolled inverted too fast and too low and yanked the elevator not realizing I would get full deflection at 125 mph and it snapped in. That's the last time I'll make an impulsive maneuver again. And ten minutes before the flight, one of the best flyers at my field told me not to use full deflection with expo because if you have to make a quick correction, the tendency is for the plane to over react without being on low rates. Bud did I listen to himL Nooooooooooo. Oh well, It was a good day because I maidened my World .46 Mustang with a YS 110 and that was a blast - much more responsive and quick than the .60 size. I love the bigger planes - they are more relaxing to fly, except when you dig a golfer hole. I hope my motor is ok. Maybe two weeks and I'll get the Petie 2nd - my 2nd - in the air. I love that Petie, and it would not have snapped in a normal bank and yank turn, but this one was EXTREEME due to the full deflection and dive speed. Wooo hoooo. what a day. Won one , and lost one. RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
ORIGINAL: Lebus1 Bill: I need to get a close estimate in feet can the P-51 come to a stop on either pavement or a hard dirt surface. If I invest the time an money and blow the first landing it wouldn't be good to be me. Thanks
I completely understand your situation. Next time I fly, I'll get some numbers for you. We have a 600 foot paved runway with about a 5 - 10 mph headwind in the afternoon. Sometimes I fly in the morning when it's still, so that would be a better time to see how this slows on it's own. I normally don't use flaps on the Petie. Next time, I'll keep you in mind when I make my landings and get you some data with full flaps down. My plane is probably heavier than yours - I'm running JR DS 8231 digital servos, (not my idea, someone else built the plane and installed them. Boy are they smooth and accurate centering. I think that is part of why this plane flys so sweet - it just carves up the sky EXACTLY where you put it. ) and a JR NES 791 on the retracts ( which I highly recommend because of the high torque and the same size - it tells the stock mechanicals who's boss and never any problems. Make sure you flood the gear bays inside with epoxy, and leave clearance for the top of the servo on the underside of the sheeting on top of the wing or the servo won't seat all the way down. You MUST reinforce the gear block area or even a so so landing will rip out. ) I'm running a YS 110 and a 20 oz tank and usually land with at least 6 oz in reserve. So factor those in when I get you some numbers. The question is when am I going to fly next??? I could get a wild hair and go tomorrow, but no promises when. Bill

RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
ORIGINAL: Lebus1 Being the thread has been quite for a time I thought I would ask an off topic queston. I have a short packed dirt runway (120yds). I am having difficulty getting my 60'' .60 powered pattern style aircraft to stop before running out into a neighboring field. My question is can the WM Petie 2nd slow down and land in that length of runway? I've got the fever bad for this plane but if I can't stop it I can't fly it. Dang
One thing that you can do is to shim the rear of the main gear with a pop sickle stick or other material so that the gear legs move toward the leading edge of the wing. This will help with noseovers. There may be some extra work to get the gear inside the bays with this different swing geometry. I'm going to do it probably next week so I'll let you know how it works out if I remember. I was using high and low rates on my elevator - low for high speed and high for max deflection on the taxi ways and for runway braking, and then I got smart and went with high rates only and a lot of expo and that works nicely for me. I love this plane. The covering is pretty, but the adhesive is marginal. I don't care what this plane looks like - the sooner it becomes a beater the better - so I sealed down all of the covering edges with C A, and so far it's staying on. If I get a bubble, I pop it and ca it down. On this color film for this model, World really dropped the ball on the adhesive side of the covering. My other World Model planes do not have covering issues like this one does. But it flys so good, I don't care about the covering. It's such a good plane it's worth recovering if it comes to that, or even right from the start, like I'm doing on my other one. Somehow, I ended up with a new pair of Peties with 110's. Good luck landing on that dirt. A nice headwind will be your best friend, but you know that if you are flying pattern planes. Bill

Practice your approaches during your first flight so you don't have unused runway behind you. Watch the braking from the dirt so you don't get noseovers, and dump the flaps and use high rates and a lot of expo on the elevator to minimize your workload when it's time to use the elevator for braking. Have fun, Bill

RE: World Models .60 size P-51 MustangPetie 2nd version
SpinnerRow - In a previous post I highly recommended the factory motor mount with a YS 110. I have changed my mind after running it with a 110. There seems to be way too much engine movement for my peace of mind. The fuse feels like more vibration is transferred to it than a solid mount, so I am not going to use the stock mount. It was designed for a .91 four stroke or 2c equivalent, but the YS 110's are more like a 150 and this mount can't handle it. It may be fine with a non-YS .91, but not the 110 IMHO. Bill

Wollins - Did you get your Petie in the air yet? I realized my first Petie with the covering falling off was stored where the temps were actually too warm for long-term storage. If I really cared about a beautiful plane, I'd cover it from the start. If you want to fly and just have fun and use it as an everyday beater, just fly it as is. Go with the Robarts - it's not a two hundred and fifty dollar plane - more like over a Grand by the time you get everything if you run a YS 110 like you're supposed to.[:D] I was flying my YS 110 in my World Chipmunk today and the 110 is really where it's at - assuming you have someone experienced help with the tuning.
