RE: Elevator helper Spring??
Hey Hop, I am no pro at this but I have head a few larger birds and have had friends with 50cc's and up. When you have the power turned on to your Rx and Tx, the power from your battery and certering info from your Tx is therefore centering your servo. When you turn ouf power there is nothing telling the servo what to do, so it will "sleep" and your control surfaces will droop. This is very normal, you do not need springs. As far as the construction of your plane. Its sounds good and strong and should be a good flyer. The other fellas on this forum will tell you it will fly like a dog, but you will not be doing fast flying or 3D with this airframe and should fly realisticly. Maybe you could save weight by replaceing the spar with a carbon fiber spar, and/or substitute carbo where you can. I would try to save wieght by recommending a lighter engine so that you will noy be required to add tail wieghts to increase the overall wieght. Roto engines From First Place engine) are fairly light and are built very well. Plus they may be lighter than a G-62. I am also a big fan of HiTec servos, they have never done me wrong.

RE: I need GYRO help.
I used a COSM 180 Gyro on my Ultra Stick 60. The reason I started using the gyro was to help in landing with a crosswind or if I am a lttle hard on the throttle at liftoff. It hepled me a lot. The COSM gyro is 4.8V and the sensitivity I had sep-up was around 60%. There were now problems with wagging as you would have with a GY401. Do not use a heading hold gyro, or at least dont use a heading hold gyro in heading hold mode. In the picture, you will see that the plane was set up so I could help my son take the stick and have some insurance. I did not need the BTA, but the gyro helped my son steady in the air. This gyro is inexpensive also, about $80.00.

Florida Jets 2006 Photos
Today I made it to the Florida Jets event for the second year in a row. Although I am not a model jet pilot, I still enjoy the show. This show was a delight because I attented on Sunday and the crowd was therefore less, but I missed the larger half-time shows that were present on Friday and Saturday. They still had a scaled down halt-time show where Jason Shulman flew a couple of rounds, and BVM intrudeced a new EDF Jet that fly with great power and authority, and looks like a promising product when released. The next couple of post will include some photos from the day.

RE: zoom control on aerial video
I would reccomend using a micro servo affixed to a mount and controlled off an unused RX channel. The remotes that come with the camera are of no use. The same application could be used for focus and record on/off depending on how you camera controls are set up.

Where is the best place to go for different materials such as G-10, anodized aluminum tubing, sign foam (high desity urethane blocks for shaping) and all that stuff?

RE: Traxxas 2.5 Problem
Yes, the 30% is alot but it is fun. After reading the other posts about this engine I found that the sleeve is probably the culprit. Maybe I'll upgrade to another engine. The 30% is because I was flying heli's and always had it hand, plus is has lots of lube! The only thing bad that came from the 30% was that we could no longer use rubber tires. They would simply explode, or shred. So we switched over to foamies and that solved the tire issue. My theory is the Nissan body we attached as a replacement did not have sufficiant ventilation and cooked the head. What engine would kick ass in the chassis? How about the FS-26S-C V2 four stroker?

Traxxas 2.5 Problem
I have a Nitro 2.5 4Tec. I have been running it on 30% heli fuel for two years now. It's only on it's first plug. The fuel tank, tubing and assosiated ware has been replaced yet I still have problems with the tuning. I think it could be a compression problem and may need to be shimmed, or less nitro? The engine starts fine, normally the first push of the button, one second...running. Then it idles fine, no loading up. It will tear ass across the lot for a few minutes then die. After trying to start it again, it will not start. I have tried tuning it with a new plug and after a half hour of tunig it seemed worse. The origional plug worked best. I replaced it with a new OEM Traxxas plug, but the brand new plug ran poorly. Ideas?

RE: Risks of home-made onboard glow driver
I also had finaly come to the realization that I needed an onboard driver for my inverted 4 stroke. I did get it tuned to where it would not die on me, but I wanted the extra insurance. I used a 1.2Vt cell from an old Rx battery pack, convieniently it still had the tabs on it after I broke it out of the pack to solder wires onto it. I used a small momentary button, and a spare servo with a spring swining off the end of a servo arm to actuate the button. I know this battery only has 75MaH, but It's only on at the start of the flight and below 1/2 or 1/4 throttle, and since I re-wired a chargeswitch, I can recharge it simply. I use a Futaba 9C radio that lets me utilize the Thottle-Needle mix. I simply ran the spare servo from Ch8 and adjusted the mix and arm until the glow plug would light at below 1/2 throttle. The spring helps with not having to worry about adjusting the travel.

RE: Full scale flyers....roll call.
As far as the Statue of Liberty flight. I would research that heavily. The FAA and is still nervous when planes of anysize come around that area. I don't know the restrictions for sure but I know they exist. I dont want to see you get into trouble, but as you said your instructor may be with you and he will know the way.

RE: Full scale flyers....roll call.
I am not a pilot of full scale planes. But some day I will. I would probably go to Embry Riddle and not waste any time if I can affor it. But the way things are now, it may be Damian going there and following my dream instead..... if he wishes of-course. This flight today was half birthday present, and half of my ideals. What I mean by that is taht I want to introduce my son to everything. I did not have that growing up. My son has been with me on many adventures, while truck driving, meeting me when my tours came thru town, and cruising with me while I was working abord a ship. This is just one more step to get him to think outside the 9-5 over structured and boreing life that a lot of us are accustomed to. I want better for him. (I was a sound engineer for a few years, i still am I guess, but I don't pursue it heavily)

RE: Full scale flyers....roll call.
Today I introduced my son into flight. Here at Kingston Airpark he took his Introductodtory flight with Drew and loved it. The plane is a (approx) 20 year old Cessna 152 II. My son loved the experience and especialy loved flying over the Hudson River and The Wine Fest. He added that aside from the engine noise and pilots yapping the the comm, it is very peacefull up there. Here are some pics... The last pic is just before touch down with full flaps, and it just seems to hang in the air. Damian did not expext that he would be handed a list to read. I said: "get used to it, if you want to fly you must complete your pre-flight check list. You don't want to be in you climb out and find your elevator is not fuctioning."

Full Scale Crop Duster
I don't know how many of you live here in the beautifull Hudson Valley, namely the Kingston/Hurley area. Maybe you are among the few that are entertained by this fella while driving along RT209 into Kingston, NY while he is dusting Mr. Gills' fields. Well I finally snaped a couple of photos this morning while he was doing his rutine. It's not like you can do anything eles because it's soooo loud and distarcting, but in a nice mechanicly poetic kinda way. When viewed from the side, it seems like the prop is almost 20 feet in diameter and did I mention loud? Here are a couple shots. One is the low approach and the next is the low pass. The pilot saw I was following him around the field for a better angle so I believe this shot will be thanks to him and his "pose" for the snapshot. I personaly don't mind being awakened by this pilot at 6am, but some people do, too bad on them. The plane sounds as if 10 Harley Davidsons are sysnched together and flying in unison, way cool. I have seen the fella bring his model crop duster, air tractor, agwagon to the Florida Jets event and demonstrate the models ability to spray just like the real thing. Just as cool. Great show.

Low End Needle Extension
I recently bought an OS 120E Surpass and love it so far. Convieniently the high end needle has a hole drilled into the end with a set screw for adding an extension such as a piece of rod to extend pass a cowl. Is there a simular way to extend the low end adjustment screw?

Rondout Valley Flyers
Hey, just wanted to start a thread for pics and news. Rondout Valley Flyers is in Accord, NY and has probably the largest field I've ever flown at. Well it should be since it was at one time a real airport. Most of us fly .40 too .100 size airplanes of all stayles. Kits, ARF's, some of the planes flown are over 10 years old. Here are some pics...

Accel Hobbies Profile Pitts
Hey, just as I thought it was time to give up on finding a .40 size profile biplane I found you fellas writing about this one. The Accel Hobbies Pitts Profile Bipe. This is my fourth plane, first profile. I wanted to get out of the cowling situation. I have seen the ease of my buddies at the field with thier profiles while the scale guys and myself were tinkering and screaming due to a cowl. For $200 bucks I would have liked the balsa to be of better quality, but then again I did not build it so I had no choice of materials. But all in all the ARF is worth the money. I was missing some hardware from the kit upon arrival, but I had some laying around from previous projects so I made no issue. I am sure the other ARF's are fine. Besides, I find that most guys change out the hardware anyhow. I like to use the snap-on links and pivot balls that you find on the RC helis. This plane has: Throttle-Futaba-3004 Rudder-Futaba-3003 Elevator-Futaba-3003 Aileron-Hitec-5475 I am sure that the 3003's for the tail were not the best choice but they were in my box and I didn't want to spend anymore money. I don't do hard 3D, just loops and pull-outs so I'll be fine. The Hitecs 5475's are great servos. I use these same servos all over my Ultra Stick sixty with no problems at all.

RE: TOP GUN
Funfly and Tiger, Thanks for getting back to me. I should have know better than to listen to the bleacher talk. I could not realy hear what the announcer was saying. I had read that it was a positive thing to have a gyro on a twin + airframe. The deal with the 6 dollar cheeseburgers and dogs was probably carried over from going to a an overpriced "bazzar" in Tarpon Springs the night before. I thought it was as good as the ones up here in NY but it was a total wash as the food goes. I was raped for the 6 bucks for a sausage and pepper sandwich plus 3 bucks for a small soda and 4 bucks for 10 french undercooked fries. So I was a little bitter I guess. You have a valid point. We see the Brothers of Italy at the events around the area (carnivals) and they make some kick@$$ food.

RE: TOP GUN
As I read back in the thread about Mike Barbee'sA-26, Iwonder if he what inputs he was giving to the aircraft? I was told he lost radio comand so I would assume that a gyro was on the rudder? I look back at the photos and the nose gear is pointed to the port side......

RE: TOP GUN
Top Gun Hey Boys... As my vacation comes to an end, I wanted to drop a line to share what I had seen while here in Florida. The fact that I dont fly jets did not stop me from going over to Lakeland to see the Top Gun Competition. I was completely in awe when I saw the speed they fly at. I looked for the fella from Saugerties (Bob .. F-16 Designer) and could not find him among all the fans there. Aside from being reintroduced to the Florida sun on my NY skin that has been hiding under 7 layers of clothing for the last five months, it was a great day! I took some picture of the displayed aircraft, but while they were in the air I was too busy following them with my own two eyes so the camera was ow little use. I was introduced to the following: Mark (Last Name?) 3D Heli Demo w/ a gas X-Cell Queike Sumenzi 3D Airplane Demo The Futaba 3D Airplane Demo Team Combat Demo (Ribbon cutting...) The last fella to demo that day was I think Bob Violet. The pilot was a large man flying a bright orange BVM King Cat jet and answered to Captain Salami! He did his thing simulating breaking the sound barrier and showing what how slow and stable the larger jets are. Wing area is your friend here also. This let went every bit as fast as the F-105's and and F-16's. The last entry is my salute to all the pilots. The wind was wipping across the runway at a decent rate, maybe 10-20 knots and they still continued to fly. Sometime they would land side-ways and recover! The war planes like the Corsairs and Spitfires seemed to be more difficult to handle in the wind on approach and takeoff than the jets I assume due to speed and wing design. I have a pic of one jet that went down and was carried back to the pits in front of the crowd in the bleachers on the "meat wagon". Many planes would just nose over at the end of the run out due to the crosswind. There was one twin engine jobbie, modeled after Canadian Fire Bomber and lost all radio controll an crashed after flying over the crowd then landing into the "tent city". My condolences to the pilots who may have totaled thier planes. Could have done without the $25.00 pit passes, $4.00 Lemonades, and $6.00 Cheesburgers. All in all a great day! See ya at the field. They don't crash if you don't fly 'em!
