RE: 9th Annual Warbirds Over The Rockies
Warbird enthusiasts: A few words to let you know that registrations to date are running slightly ahead of last year which means a great turnout with many great aircraft competing for coveted trophies. There have been as many as 350 aircraft in the past with similar numbers expected this year. As always, we have a great event in store with lots of cool stuff for pilots was well as the whole family - a second to none pyrotechnics show, full scale flyovers and a noon show in which anyone can participate, plus lots of open flying orchestrated by our Airboss Michael Derks. Event proceeds benefit Mental Health America-Colorado. Last year we raised $13,000 for this worthy cause. And I almost forgot to mention the banquet and guest speaker, Col. Charles "Mac" McGee of the Tuskegee Airmen who flew a P-51 "Kitten". There are only 200 seats available for the banquet and live auction of $1000's in merchandise. We are also expecting members of the "Re Tails" from the Denver area to attend on Friday. Remember to preregister and also be aware that online registration ends Monday, September 18th! For complete event and registration information go to [link]http://warbirdsovertherockies.com[/link] Brian and I look forward to seeing you in September

9th Annual Warbirds Over The Rockies
[b]9th Annual Warbirds Over The Rockies September 28-30, 2012[/b] [b]Scramble, Sramble, Scramble!!![/b] Love Air RC is excited to announce that it will again be hosting Warbirds Over The Rockies, one of the nation's best warbirds events. More 125 pilots and many, many great aircraft are expected at Drake Field east of Ft Collins CO. In case you are a first time flyer at this event, the runway is 800 ft. x 70 ft wide and there are no obstructions. Last year the event raised $13,000 for the Colorado chapter of Mental Health America. Proceeds will again be donated to this worthy cause. This event is designed especially for the warbird pilot. The landing fee of $50.00 includes $7.00 in “Warbird Bucks that can be used for purchases at the Cool Stuff Store. Please note that the onsite fee is $60. All aircraft must have been used in the military and be in military paint schemes. Aircraft of any scale, including arfs, are welcome. This means lots of open flying without interference from flying lawn mowers or 3D planes. The noon show will feature full scale fly-bys including a Mig, T-33 and more; the pyro show will be spectacular as always and there are openings for big bombers and fighters to participate. There will also be mass foamie warbirds launch. Oh by the way, did we mention the spectacular pyro show provided by Angel Light Pyrotechnics?!!! Thousands of dollars of donated R/C merchandise will available a prizes or sold at auction during the Saturday night banquet. Famous Dave’s BBQ will be the official food vendor for 2012 including an expanded menu. The banquet on Saturday night will be held at the Lory Student Union, at Colorado State University. The sit down dinner features prime rib, salmon or a vegetarian option with all the fixings, soft drink and dessert. Cost is $40 per person. A no host bar will also be available. The banquet will be both entertaining and full of surprises. The guest speaker will be Col. Mac MaGee of the Tuskegee Airmen who flew a P-51 called Lil Kitten. He flew more combat missions over three wars than any other American pilot. He is 92 and a true American hero. Banquet tickets are available on-line or by mail; a limited number of tickets will be available at the field. Please buy your tickets early as seating is limited. For complete information for pilots and vendors please go to: [link]http://www.warbirdsovertherockies,com[/link] and the attached event flyer. Questions? RE: painted iron-on covering
I've painted 21st Century fabric, Monocote and Ulltracoat primarily with PPG automotive paint but also the trim colors that one can buy for the various colors. My method is to mask (use fine line tape) the area I want to paint then gently rough the surface with 0000 steel wool; and also the mask line with 400 grit wet dry paper. Clean with a tack rag and acetone then a degreaser and paint. I put down just enough paint to cover as this can add [i]onces if not pounds [/i]to your aircraft if you are not careful. (Ask me how I know!!) I've had no problems with adhesion over the years. I have a ACE Weeks Special with 21st Century that was painted in 1990 that still looks great. Mike

Too bad you folks didn't bother to follow this story further rather than jumping to conclusions and worst case scenarios. There was a weather balloon found that met the description of the object. It was NOT an RC aircraft.

RE: Regulation passed the House
We have already agreed that there were numerous things wrong with the incident and enough blame to go around. I guess you didn't read the part about the airboss telling the model pilot to dump it. [link]http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?do=main.textpost&id=09297f57-c002-4cfe-bb12-f27463ccf586[/link] http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?do=main.textpost&id=09297f57-c002-4cfe-bb12-f27463ccf586 [/quote] i have to correct you on that . the modeler did not fly into the bipe. the bipe did a low smoke pass after he called a landing. the modeler was in a hover over the runway when the bipe came down through and hit him. i'm sure we all saw the video. so IMO ,you can't blame the the modeler. the only thing i will say is he didn't have a spotter with him . i guess he had some people near him , but nobody said a word as the bipe came closer. that's what i remember about that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvcN-0PikEU [/quote]

RE: Do you think the FAA should be sticking its nose into our hobby?
In spite of all of this, I would bet my house that the FAA will impose strict controls on FVP and autonomous flight regardless of altitude whether within the AMA Standards or the default path. All of the issues that folks would like to gloss over here and in other forums are likely to be issues - aircraft size, altitude, speed, BLOS, see and avoid, night flights, etc., etc. are elephants in the room. The FAA will need to be convinced that any of these can be done safely, which will likely be a tall task... The guy from Europe who flew FPV all over Manhattan last year did not do the cause any favors. [&o]. One other point made at the recent AMA Convention in Ontario, and not to be overlooked, is that this is not a negotiation with the FAA..... The AMA Standards [i]must satisfy[/i] FAA safety concerns and meet their expectations. As mentioned by others previously, the default path will be very restrictive.

RE: Do you think the FAA should be sticking its nose into our hobby?
KE, all: The AMA show teams have no dispensation for loading models with pyro. The teams actually follow rules that are more restrictive that the typical modeler. However, the teams may use ground based pyro provided that a strict set of guidelines are followed. See AMA doc #718 Mike Safety Director TEAM AMA

Actually, CL activities do not enter into the discussion. The draft rule will apply only to RC and autonomous flight. Indoor events are not considered to be in the National Air Space. Mike

RE: Just received an email about video of upcoming rule info?
Its really quite simple. The FAA will not require anyone to follow the AMA Standards, but this is one way to meet the new rule requirements. Model pilots choosing not to follow the AMA Standards will be required to adhere to the new default path rule which is expected be quite restrictive. The default rule will be available free of charge.

RE: AMA Today - FAA reps address members
The Federal Government uses a variety of standards that have been developed outside the federal domain. For example ASTM International ([link]http://www.ASTM.org[/link] formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) has more than 100 years of experience in developing standards for a variety of entities such as the US and other governments, manufacturing, etc. Example standards include “test methods, specifications, guides and practices that support industries and governments worldwide. In fact ASTM is working on a number of standards relating to sUAS and the commercial sector. e.g.. ASTM WK29229 - New Specification for Standard Practice for Certification of Pilots, Visual Observers, Instructor Pilots, and Training Courses for Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) See http://www.astm.org/DATABASE.CART/workitems.htm (From this title of this I think you might deduce where the default rule may be headed.) All ASTM standards are the propriety intellectual property of ASTM International that, once approved by the responsible party(s) such as the FAA, are available for sale. Using a process called “Incorporation by Reference the FAA will cite the approved AMA Standards in the final rule which give the standards force of law as described below. From the Federal Register site: [link]http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/cfr/ibr-locations.html[/link] the following explanation: “Incorporation by reference is used primarily to make privately developed technical standards Federally enforceable. Agency generated documents are presumptively ineligible for incorporation by reference because that material can and should be published in full text in the Federal Register and CFR. Agencies are not authorized to incorporate by reference material on their web sites as a substitute for Federal Register publication. The legal effect of incorporation by reference is that the material is treated as if it were published in the Federal Register and CFR. This material, like any other properly issued rule, has the force and effect of law. Congress authorized incorporation by reference in the Freedom of Information Act to reduce the volume of material published in the Federal Register and CFR. (See 5 U.S.C. 552(a) and 1 CFR part 51). Congress gave complete authority to the Director of the Federal Register to determine whether a proposed incorporation by reference serves the public interest. The final AMA Standards which must be in ASTM format will represent all of what we currently enjoy in model aviation and the rules and guidelines that AMA has developed over the years. The Standards will also represent 100’s if not 1000’s of hours of development work. Although we have operated using a relatively short Safety Code, the Code will be insufficient for future operations in the eyes of the FAA. Thus, We can expect that the AMA Standards will not be published in the Federal Register so they will not be in the public domain. However, they will be available to members. While no final decisions have been made, it is likely that the AMA Standards would be available for purchase by non members via the AMA website. Our committee has been meeting nearly weekly for 3 years to discuss/develop standards. We've had a couple of starts and stops primarily due to changes in FAA folks with whom we work but are well on the way to developing final draft materials for a large majority of what we do. I am not currently turbine waivered but do have a strong commitment to jets and own a BVM EDF F-16 and a Tam Jets F-18 Super Hornet w Rhino. I expect to get signed off this summer. Almost 2 years ago, I worked with a group of highly respected JPO members identified by Keith Sievers to discuss standards and format the current AMA turbine rules according to ASTM style requirements. These volunteers were asked not to speak about about the work, but yes there are JPO members involved in this effort. There was [b]nothing new [/b]in this draft. We now have to go back and expand this work because, contrary to what we were told at the time, other AMA documents can not referenced in the standard i.e. the standards must be a stand alone document. Hope this helps. Mike Harrington Leader Member, CD Recording Secretary AMA Standards Work Group

Wrong. I know something about this since its part of my real job. See: [link]http://biofuelsdigest.com/bdigest/2010/04/23/shock-wave-camelina-biofuels-pass-sound-barrier-in-successful-navy-f-18-trial/[/link] A quick search for aviation and biofuels will reveal there are many examples of jet engines being tested with biofuels. The commercial aviation sector also has a big dog this fight too. See: [link]http://www.caafi.org/[/link], Boeing and others are involved in this as well. Mike

Looks like there will be a great turnout this year. Online registration ends tonight (Wednesday) @ [link]http://warbirdsovertherockies.com[/link] so there is still time to save $5 and go the easy route to avoid the crunch of the weekend. As a special added attraction, Dino is expected to wear the cocktail dress he first wore on the \Red Carpet in Rio for the Saturday banquet and, much to Ms. Bonnie's chagrin, Brian will be his escort. Not withstanding Bud Andersen's presentation, this should prove to be more than sufficient incentive for all to attend the banquet and quite a site as well!! Bring your cameras and get your tickets early. Film at 11:00!!!! Be there. Mike

As an added bonus, members of the 4th Fighter Group ([link]http://www.fourthfightergroup.com/[/link]), who will be in Denver for a reunion, will also be attending on Friday. This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet these heroes from WWII. Signature features include full scale fly overs and a pyrotechnics shows that are not to be missed. The number of registered pilots grows daily, including pilots from Brazil, England and other foreign countries. Registration is easy via PayPal or check. Complete information and fill-able forms can be downloaded on the website at http://www.warbirdsovertherockies.com. RE: Scramble, Warbirds Over The Rockies in Coming
Typically there are 125-140 pilots, some who fly a lot while others just like to attend and get is a flight or two. There are continuous flight ops (9-5 pm) and a well managed flight line with 6 or more flight stations depending on the types of aircraft. As far as I know most attendee get to fly as much as they want There no reason why you would not have many chances to fly. Mike WOTR CD and Co-Director
