RE: SM 1/6 F16 Rudder?
FWIW, I agree with Tor. A properly designed external link directly connected to the rudder is going to be the most rigid and flutter proof. I used an internal system to hide the linkage. Here are a couple of posts in the above thread showing the piano wire and brass tube mod: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=6605066 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=6998954

RE: SM 1/6 F16 Rudder?
Hi Matt, here is a pic taken during preliminary assembly. Not the clearest, but the best I could do at the time. This is a push/pull single arm system using a metal servo arm and a long machined aluminum control horn - it is very rigid. I also used Tor's music wire and brass tube mod, which can't be seen in the photo. The recommended SM setup uses a 1:1 linkage which (according to my calcs) requires turning ATV way down - not good for a flutter prone control system. I'm using a P-160SX with bypass, and I fly it hard at times. No flutter issues yet. I have no idea if this system would hold up with P-180 power.

RE: SM 1/6 F16 Rudder?
Stock rudder setups have occasionally fluttered. Some owners have modded the rudder setup. See the following thread for details: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4853891/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm It is a long thread, but there is a lot of useful info. Mods that have been made include: the use of a silver soldered piano wire with brass tube to reduce linkage slop; external rudder horns directly linked to the servo. I used internal linkage - however, the stock linkage was replaced with a long machined control horn to achieve servo travel of 100% at the recommended rudder throw. Works OK so far.

RE: How do you measure the speed of your jets ?
I bought a Garmin wrist GPS for windsurfing. I've placed it in jets and it seems to give repeatable max ground speed numbers if you fly large race track laps with no vertical maneuvers. Vertical maneuvers during the flight result in unrealistic speed numbers.

RE: s/m 1/6 f16 in my hot little hands!
Heads up regarding retract airlines... Make sure that the main gear tires do not touch air lines in the retracted position. The wheels continue to spin after takeoff and retraction, and the tires will eventually wear through the air lines resulting in rapid loss of air. Mine was a pro version FWIW.

Three Amigos fired up their F-Teens at Seguin. Hot north wind and right hand pattern - pretty unusual for central Texas in August.

RE: Has this ever happened to anyone?
This is a well written "how to land" from the JPO knowledge bank: http://www.jetpilots.org/knowledge_bank/landings.pdf It is worth a read even if you already know how to land. FWIW, I've had the same problem - first few landings with a new airframe are pretty good, the next 5 or 10 kinda suk. I don't know for sure why it happens, but I sometimes find myself slipping back into bad habits without realizing it. I think it helps to consciously focus on the fundamentals every second of every landing.

Repairs to the 1/6 SM Falcon are finally done - gear (half) up landing had scraped up the underside and damaged the gear doors. Nearly good as new.

RE: Don't let this happen to you guys!!
ORIGINAL: combatpigg Yes he was. He was part of the last ''great generation''. These were the guys who were tough enough to win a war, from the leadership on down. He flew 86 missions [they didn't use the fag term ''sorties'' back then] over Germany with the 405th fighter group, 8th Army Air Force in a P-47. His plane, the Sigma Nu Girl has become a cult favorite amongst some scale modelers. There is even a decal sheet available of his plane.
I have tremendous admiration for men like your father. When I think of what the WWII generation sacrificed and then look at the current state of affairs, I get a little nauseous.

RE: balancing a full flying stab
ORIGINAL: HarryC If measured from the AC (the 25% of MAC point) the pitching force is constant for all unstalled angles of attack.
Harry, is the above a typo? I thought the pitching coefficient was constant, not the pitching force. Perhaps it would be correct to say that the pitching force at a constant speed is constant for all unstalled angles of attack? I think you say that in your prior sentence.

RE: balancing a full flying stab
1Eye, could you explain how you found that 27% is best? I've read that the neutral point (assuming a symmetric airfoil) is typically at 25% of MAC. I ask because I'm considering a flying stab for a future project. Thanks
