Guys, here are some pictures of Jim Katz's little jewels he has been building. Jim will be helping with the Carolina 1/2A Crew flyin. All are scaled down from the original plans and covered in tissue. Around 22 inch wingspan I beleive. These little guys just putt around the sky and fly really well. Of course you can tell Jim is a master craftsman!! Enjoy!!! Bob Harris

Generally April through May are pretty good down here. Seeing how its a one day event lets hope for clear skies! BTW, 1/2A also means control line flying also. This field has enough room to fly C/L away from the RC flight line so Brian bring your kids and let do some circle flying!![:D] Bob Harris

Carolina 1/2A Crew Fly-In and Reedie Race
OK guys, I’m trying to get a 1/2A meet together which will include the “Reedie Racing as well as general flying. The spot is a private flying field where we’ve held some Quickie 500 races and practice. It has a 30 x 50 asphalt takeoff pad with 2 1700 ft grass runways. About 98 acres of open area to fly. The field is in Julian NC right off of 421. About 30 minutes from the field Rog has been having his fly-in at. Enough room for 2 flight lines so the flying would not have to stop during the races. I’ve been flying some of my vintage single channel models there because it is so open so if one of the systems was to quit retrieving the model would be no problem. A great free flight place also! What I need to decide is a good date. A spring date would be great. Just need to decide so I can nail down the day. Brian, the field even has 2 ponds possibly float fly???? So what do you think??? I think we should open it up to all 1/2A designs both glow and electric. Bob Harris

Well, if your guys would build I could come up with a smaller version of my BuckShot (Quickie 25) which by the way is a scaled up version of my 1/2A pylon racer the QuikShot!!! Not much building but you would need a sheeted foam wing. But we got people who could supply sheeted wings also!![:D] Trust us... we got people!!! Bob Harris

RE: Twin .020 Jr Skylark build thread
Bill, My prototype, (Red One) pictured here flew with single channel Mattel pulser. I lessened the dihedral by 3/4 inch and she had over 50+ flights without any problems. The second picture is from a friend's 2 channel version with full dihedral. It also flew great with the standard incudence and balance. The only modification I did to the Early RC kit from the original was the spars were made from hardwood instead of balsa. Their location should be exact in comparison to the original. All incendences are as per the original but I show on the plans how to lessen it back to zero to reduce the climbing tendency which was common for single channel but unwanted for multi channel. RE: Twin .020 Jr Skylark build thread
Well, I think 20 oz is OK. The original model showed 18 oz on the plans. Mine was silked and doped but was using a larger receiver and the Ace Batam servos, and a 220 mAH NiCad pack. So I’m almost sure it was much heavier that Nic's model. With the Tee Dee .020s she flew like on rails. She would take off the ground in about 20 feet of runway using the 1 inch Perfect tires. I suspect the little Pee Wees are giving all they have and just don’t equal the Tee Dees. Maybe some tweaking will give you a little more but I’m sure they will still be marginal. The offer still stands Nic, I let you borrow a couple Tee Dee .020 to try out!! Bob Harris

Well Shorty, I can't make it next week so you will have to wait until next race to see my spark retarder setup I've installed in my quickie to meet the rpm rule. Simple devise using the vacunm off the muffler to retard the timing enough to pinch at 16,500. What is amazing is if you advance it by 2 degrees I can pinch 21,000!!![:D] Mine is integraded into the bomb drop program on my 7C!! Bob Harris

RE: Maybe it's a sign that I'm just getting old...
Well, at 52 years old I kind of like various disciplines of model airplanes. Yes I enjoy and have done quite a bit of the vintage RC stuff both with the models and the radios. I also like 1/2A designing as well as giant scale projects. Here recently I’ve been designing and racing Quickie 500 racers. It’s all fun to me. I’ve been able to incorporate what I have learned in the past in relationship to building and such to both the racers as well as the giant scale. My racers are out of balsa and foam with fiberglass and/or polyester coverings and all tend to come out weighing less than the required minimum weigh. This helps when trimming and such. I attribute this again to lessons learned through building the vintage models where weigh was an issue when the radios weighed quite a bit more. Unfortunately the participants in racings are down because many in the new age group are accustomed to ARF’s which do fly but most of the time place behind the hand built model designs. So it goes with giant scale. The varieties of designs seen at the flying field are limited to the numbers of true builders. Again the majority of the flyers use the ARF so it appears everything is either an Extra or Cap with different color schemes. I don’t want to sound like I’m down on ARFs but what do you truly call an “Expert modeler who asked how to repair a broken firewall in an ARF? Is he really a modeler or assembler!!! Bob Harris

RE: 428 motors
Randy, one alternative could be “Hot Rodding 424. I picked up a Nelson Ultra Thrust muffler for a .40 in a package deal a few weeks ago. I had an old worn out Thunder Tiger Pro .40 that I had picked up used for spare parts. The max RPM I could get with stock muffler on 15% cool power was 15,750. I installed the Ultra Thrust and it would pinch 17,500. I did not run it long as I was afraid it would spit the bearings out!! I wonder what a TT Pro .40 would do with good bearings, this muffler and maybe some shimming? May be a quick less expensive fix for faster 424 with an available engine. Bob Harris

Well Barry, My Daughter is the Eastern North Carolina Quarter Horse Associations Youth Champion in Barrel racing and pole bending. She travels with the youth team to Columbus OH for the Quarter Horse Congress the "Nationals" of quarter horse shows. (actually the largest quarter horse show in the world). So I'll be there with her. She has worked hard this year to make it. She even won the NC State Fair Youth contest yesterday! Anyway, she will be racing around poles and barrels but not 3 pole!!![:D] I've heard from Mike all the rain has really helped the grass at the Julian field and he has also installed a 30 x 50 asphalt take off pad so you guys are going to have some fine racing!! Mike and Jim really go all out so I'm sure it will be one of the primo races in this area!! Bob Harris

RE: Re-living a past life?
Well, I had the honor of working with Hal DeBolt on the Early RC Models version of the Champ. A great guy with loads of information. I still have the approval plan he OKed for the design. Unfortunately he passed away before he could build the first kit produced I sent him as promised. We are loosing this type of knowledge it seems everyday. Yes ARFs are needed in this hobby but to assembly (NOT BUILD) one does not require the pre-existing knowledge of construction skills required in a kit built model. I just like to build my own. This way I know how it is built and what to expect from the model. Here is a picture of the prototype Champ. Yep I could have covered her in silk but the transparenet covering sure looks good!! Mike, I'm currently flying (for the last 6 years) a Minnie Mambo with an OK Cub .049. It has an Ace single channel pulser in it. I quit counting at 100 flights and she is still going strong. I also flew one of my Little Esquires with an OK Cub .099 but I has some issues with it pulling fuel from the Perfect 1 oz tank so I replaced it with a Medallion .049. It also has a Ace single channel pulser in her. I also fly single channel escapements also. Here are some pictures of my Little Esquire and DQA. I too enjoy the older models and have some fun at the flying field answering the questions how a single channel airplane flies and how did I iron on the silk and dope covering!! Bob Harris

Russ, I had a 5 channel F&M that I could not get to work consistantly. The old bonner sticks were stiff and brittle. I tried running my Futaba 4 channel 27 mhz receivers with it and the channels kept dropping out. Swapped it a few months ago for one of the Min-X systems I am currently flying. Bob Harris

There are a few things to get the Pee Wees to turn out more but I suspect they are doing about all they can. I do have a set of Tee Dee .020s I can let you borrow to fly her with. RE: Glen Spickler Quickie 500 Article
Yep, that's a original 8011 .40. I also have a new one just don't have the mufflers! I may drill it for a OS .25 FX and/or a Thunder Tiger Pro 40 for a backup you never know. At the January SPRA race in Hickory NC we had a guy flying an original Quickie 500 35 years old with a OS .25 FX. He was up there in the pack every race and was turning some good times before finding pylon 1 with the outer wing!![:@] Remember the fastest time I turned at Lowes in Quickie 25 was with my Quickie 500 MKII. Basically the same as this original except skinnyed down to meet todays specs and a slight airfoil mod. In the right hands she could be very competitive!![:D] Bob Harris
