ORIGINAL: w8ye
ORIGINAL: JohnB96041 Anyone heard anything about PowerMaster fuel. I read somewhere that it was being manufactured again somewhere in Texas. I have always used PowerMaster 15% Nitro, 18% synthetic/caster oil.
This is true but the original marketing organization is gone. It will take a little time to get it around everywhere again. Best I can figure, the company that sells it now has actually made it for Powermaster for a few years? http://www.powermasterfuels.com/
They used to be about a half an hour east of me from Round Rock over in Elgin. They've moved to Elmendorf, SE of San Antonio. Before changing ownership some years back I remember visiting their facility and they mixed their own. At any rate, it's good to see them back. Maybe purely from habit they've been my preferred brand. Been using 15% w/ 18% castor/synthetic blend in my 4 strokes and it has always been just fine. BobbyG

RE: Are you a member of a club?
I started flying 6-7 years ago with an Aerobird Challenger. It was my intention to fly only small electrics in a park near my house. Central Texas is windy and after about a year I expanded into my first glow plane, a 40 size. That led to my joining a club. I still enjoy flying electric park flyers, and it has been a nice experience to see more and more of the glow flyers starting to experiment with electrics. My experience has taught me that park flying and club membership aren't mutually exclusive. BobbyG

RE: Does this sound like your club?
Well, the guy who wrote the letter did the right thing - he voted with his feet. Shame he felt the need to disparage the president, who apparently is a hard worker. Some clubs develop a certain direction. It may not appeal to all of the membership. If it's something that can't be resolved at meetings or at the field, then alternative arrangements are in order for those who are dissatisfied. As far as landowners limiting times of usage, it's a part of what we all go through when our clubs don't have the means to purchase our own land or secure unlimited use of a parcel. It won't be getting any easier because they stopped making a land a long time ago. BobbyG

RE: The Monokote covering contest
This can be a real fun topic to follow, Deadeye. I agree with DavidGeorge - toss out the bashing and let's see what some folks have done with Monokote. It would be interesting to know when a project is a recent one done with new Monokote, with tips on how to get the best results. It might be that it's getting bashed undeservedly. We all know there are alternatives, but let's let this focus on good results with it. I'm looking forward to some great pics. Who knows - I may pick up a few rolls and give it a try myself. The gloss on Monokote is special and can make a plane look out of the ordinary. BobbyG
ORIGINAL: Dr Kiwi I'm with Walt... Nelson Film, Solite (1.95oz/sq.ft)....same stuff... wonderful, and easy to apply if you don't overcook it.
One more for this covering. It's reputation as hard to work with isn't altogether deserved. Lay it on a table adhesive side up, put the piece on top of it with the side to be covered facing down. SLOWLY turn it over and start to tack it on. Take care not to let it double back on itself - that's where the trouble starts. Keep away from air currents, drafts, etc. Work patiently with it, especially when shrinking it with the heat gun. Sometimes it looks like nothing is happening, then it warms up and starts to shrink very nicely. Again, be P A T I E N T. It has a very nice gloss to it. It looks good once it's done. BobbyG

RE: Current AR6100 Receiver status help
Hmm .... what battery, 2s or 3s Lipo? The higher the voltage the fewer servos that you can run without overloading the BEC on the ESC. With 2 servos you should have been OK. One possibility is that you had a servo binding which could have caused a spike that could send the ESC into reset. How high were you? You might have been low enough that the ground came up before the reset was complete. That said, 6100's went through a period of issues just like yours. I had one such issue a couple of years back and have yet to figure out what happened. I got the firmware upgrade, but that Rx is sitting in a drawer until I get something that will fly slow and never be more than 100 feet away. As for any other Spektrum stuff, I'm using a separate BEC now. BobbyG

RE: Why Don't the guys on 72 & 50 MHz get it ???
ORIGINAL: JPMacG I think that I mostly do get it. I have a BSEE and MSEE, my academic area of specialization was communications theory. I took graduate level courses in spread spectrum. I have Dixon's classic text on spread spectrum on my bookshelf. I have an Amateur Extra, which I got in 1973 when it was tougher and required 20 w.p.m. (since you brought it up). I have worked for 25 years as a design engineer for a large aerospace company, specializing in microwave circuits and antennas for communications satellites. My FM radio works just fine. I have never been shot down. I have never lost an airplane because of a radio problem. I am supportive of the new technology, but I don't personally feel the need to upgrade right now. I have a hundred other things that I would rather spend my discretionary money on. I don't see that changing to spread spectrum is going to make the hobby more enjoyable to me, nor significantly reduce the chance of losing an airplane due to a radio problem. SO WHAT??? Why does this matter to you? Are you a schill for JR or something? Or is it that you have gone spread spectrum and therefore everyone else must also?
And let me add to that one simple question: For years we saw champion pilots, along with the the rest of us, fly on 72 with one receiver in each plane. Now we see multiple recivers in spread spectrum planes. Why? I guess because spread spectrum needs the multiple backups ... what other reason would there be? There's no reason to berate those who stay with "old" technology. 72 has been around a heck of a lot longer than the new stuff ... at one receiver per plane, thank you. I never lost a plane to radio problems until I went to spread spectrum - and then because apparently the receiver convinced itself that there had been a voltage drop and needed 15 seconds to reboot when I was "only" 12 seconds away from the ground .... on 72 it would have been a non-issue. RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
ORIGINAL: jmcmike Hey guys, my brother just picked up saito 180 and thinks he needs to break it in on caster fuel, is this right? I thought we were synthetic only.
Castor has some filming properties that synthetics don't. It films onto the surfaces that it lubricates, so it's reputed to add to a fuel's overall lubricating quality in blends. 3% castor in a blend is pretty much the benchmark. That isn't to say that 3% oil is all that's needed in the fuel - 3% castor added to 15% synthetic, for example, is common. For running an engine in, it's optimal. Castor haters don't like the way that it "cooks" on to engine parts, and if it's left in an engine it can gum up. It needs more care than straight synthetics, but there is a benefit. And then again, it depends on whom you ask. BobbyG

RE: Stripped glow head on Saito 91
Another vote for Clarence Lee. I sent him a SAITO 80 a few years back. As I recall he has two fees - one if you send him the cylinder only, another higher one if you send him the whole engine and he has to remove and replace the cylinder. He's still in business. I phoned asking about some other work about two months ago. If you call you get his wife on the phone and she sets everything up. Ditto on what w8ye says about the difficulty of finding helicoil with the 32 threads per inch. I remember searching extensively on the web and asking around locally. What there was on the web required a big order. Locally I got a lot of blank stares. BobbyG

RE: Need cotter key for OPS Maxi 30 - FOUND!
Thanks to w8ye for letting me know that the correct name for this is "Woodruff" key. I found a number of sources in case anyone should need them. For SAE sizes: Home Depot has a fairly good selection. The one I went to did not have the specific 1/8 x 3/8" size I was looking for, so I tried NAPA Auto Parts. Most stores have them, my local one was out of stock but was expecting an order. Fastenal has a big selection. Find your local store online here - http://www.fastenal.com/web/locations.ex - it helps to call and verify before you go. I got some here - they sell them in bags of 5. The biggest selection is at McMaster-Carr. They have both SAE and Metric sizes. As it turned out, OPS being an Italian engine, I did need a metric size and I got it here. They come in bags of 25. Cost was about $ 6.70 for the bag, plus shipping. They were very prompt. http://www.mcmaster.com Hope this helps anybone else who might need it! BobbyG

Sources for Woodruff Keys!
Here's a shot in the dark - I picked up a Big Bingo at our January swap meet. It came with an OPS Maxi 30 engine. I started it today for the first time using the recommended 95% methanol/5% castor fuel. It started and ran fairly well. I was "bumping" it back against the compression point to get it to fire. A few times it started backwards. A couple of times it started backwards and then sort of sputtered and reversed and ran forward. On what turned out to be the last run I heard a crack and it stopped. It turned out to be a shearing of the cotter key that sits in the front of the crankshaft and fits into the slot in the propeller adapter plate where it fits over the crankshaft. It's part No. 0477 in the diagram. A couple of questions: Any ideas as to what might have caused this to shear? Any idea where I might go to get another cotter key? All help is greatly appreciated! O and dont get to exsited about the power, it was made to fly big and slow. mine is in a 11 foot airplane that looks like a cub. it dose the job. c-crunch
Reviving an older thread here, but I have one of these engines with a Dell-Orto and I want to get it set right. Here's hoping c-crunch sees this and can contribute: I started it for the first time the other day and it started just fine. Prime, backflip and it goes. A few times it started backwards, but that seemed no problem. I just let it die and started it again. I got it running and was seeing how well it transitioned when I heard a cracking sound. It turned out to be the Woodruff Key on the prop shaft. I've since located a replacement - an adventure in itself. I need to know more before I go back ouy and try to bumble around not really knowing what I'm doing. My question is twofold: 1.- Which needle is the high speed needle, and which the low? What are good initial settings for them? 2.- What could have caused the backfire strong enough to pop the Woodruff Key? I'm using PowerMaster fuel custom blended for me, 5% castor, 95% methanol, no nitro. Plug is a McCoy MC-4. Thanks for whatever help you can provide. BobbyG

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I've got some bragging to do, if I may [&:] - I flew my 72 for the first time today since replacing that broken rocker arm that several of the guys in here helped me to get through. It ran like a charm! I had it on the plane a few weeks back and ground ran it for a few tanks - ticking over at about 1900 RPM and transitioning beautifully. In flight it sounded sooooo sweet today! It was a neat feeling having it work so nicely after having done the work myself, without ever having done more than put fuel into an engine! [8D] In addition to replacing the rocker arms, I replaced the tappets, gapped the valves, and reset the low and high speed needles. Anyway, thanks to all who helped with tips earlier in the thread. w8ye especially, who has been helpful in a couple of other instances. You guys are super. Oh - on the subject of fuel, I'm more and more a fan of PowerMaster. All of the stuff I've done with this little engine has been with PowerMaster 15% Nitro, 18% blend for lubrication. It's also a gallon of fuel that sat in my garage for about 2 1/2 years. I figured I'd give it a try before tossing it and surprisingly it has delivered very satisfactory results. I guess there's something to be said for that metal can that keeps sunlight from the fuel. Whatever it is, PowerMaster has me hooked. BobbyG
