RE: Any Gas Outboards???
Hi Jay, I'm right behind you. Hope everything goes well with your good intention. Inboard or outboard, doesn't matter, as long as it's a tunnel. Will post some pics when I get the chance. Hope it will help stir some interest. Best Boating Regards. La-Tiff

Hi Dion, Doing great, thank you. Project is not anywhere near completion as so many things side tracked me. Arrival of a 26 and 29 pioneer to test run in monos and cats but my own tunnel lol. In between that, fly my quad copter with gopro cam for aerial videos as well as on boat. As of this weekend, I'll be away every weekend to do commentary on International Jetski racing. Any wonder why I can't finish my project ? lol. Here pics of the CPkat I've been running to find the best setting with some props from dasboata. You all just keep up the good effort. I'm right here with you. Cheers La-TIff
ORIGINAL: F1madness Hi la-tiff always happy to help, all you gotta do is ask [:D]
Thanks Bud, I would like to purchase the whole electric set up that you've used on your electric tunnel including the lowers and right prop. Please email me the total cost and we'll take it from there. So please to see the hull is nearly all done. Maiden run won't be that far away now. Use a heater to de ice the lake . Or a big heat gun. LOL Cheers Bud.

Going Green with electric coupled with serious electric power and a chance to really have a scale look, is also in my consideration Dom since I found out the availability of powerful motors and batteries getting cheaper. To be honest, I am also looking seriously at this as production model F1 tunnel boat with optimum dimension. Wanna order the whole set and hope I can get Daz to help me out here. Cheers La-Tiff. Will give you the lowers weight and dimension soon.

RE: GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home
Hi Dom and everyone , I've got my own ideas about the exhaust outlet I would want to use on that rear exhaust QD 26 which is on that lowers now. If that doesn't look suitable, then I have the option of using the Pioneer 29 with the side exhaust and slap on your pipe. I have the original lowers from the Netherland which is costly and got it long before the AS came out with their latest. I've disassembled the unit and check out the internals and found them to be of solid stuff. The gears feel like they have been heat treated or whatever else done to them to give me confidence on their longevity. Well meshed and friction free when I turned them over. Fired up the motor for the first time on the stand and didn't hear any whirring of gears. That's my finding anyways. Once we bashed them on the choppy waters, then we'll know what it is made of. Done the same on the MHZ unit and indeed the quality is clearly top notch. I want to extend that lowers a little longer so I can make it hang just at the right height on the transom of my tunnel. Done a trial fit on the transom and indeed I have to have it extended. Don't need the extension if it is on a mono. Sponson height differs from one builder to another. Mine is a standard depth from the start of my tunnel building and it has proven to work so well as you have witnessed personally. So I won;t change that just to suit the lowers. The hardwares that I've got are awesome, but I'm in no rush to show everybody yet for my OB performance. Main reason is I've got to get it done proper and show the end product and production method that will be employed for the mass production of the hull and related item to my sponsor, the government. So in my position as a government sponsored tunnel boat researcher, I'm getting a very handsome funding. This in itself alleviate the need for me to promo my design and related activities or even market them to potential buyers. Once the project as a whole is done and endorsed by the government as complete, it will open up venues to more AND bigger fund for commercialization of the product. Shall we put it this way, I've hit the jackpot with a promising look of more to come. So there Dom, Ive laid almost all out. I've brought some racing props from the US and CPKat for my test hull too. With fund available, I'm not going to splash it anyhow but on the good stuff. Trust me, I know how it is to want to use the good stuff but never had the funds for it. Been there and done. Ok long enough rambling from me. But I'll share some of the development when I can 'cause we are in a special kind of fraternity aren't we ? Best Regards to all. La-Tiff

RE: GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home
Hi Dom, Thanks. So good to hear from you and more so on the input. That bazooka was put there just to fire up the motor for the first time. Never had any intention of using that tuner there period. I have decided to put one of my QD26 in the mono for racing. So I am left with the choice of using the rear exhaust QD 26 or the side exhaust Pioneer 29. for this lowers The Pioneer 29 with side exhaust can be used with your pipe but it does not sit nicely on the back of that midsection. If I can't work out any other way with the rear exhaust QD 26 that is sitting on that lower for now, I'll have to use your pipe with the 29 and make a bracket of some sort to help hold the pipe. The extended length of the lowers with cavitation plate like yours,Gmorty or lawless will makes it easier to use your pipe with a bracket on top of the cavitation plate. As we are not restricted to any noise level here, I may use the rear exhaust QD and fabricate a baffle plate that is synchronise with throttle play. I'll see how it goes when the time comes. I never like adding aft end pod on my tunnel as it gets in the way of airflow in my thinking. I would rather extend the Z drive lowers so there will be added distance between the prop shaft and the cavitation plate just like the full scale F1 SSM gear case. Anyway it's not that difficult to do the extension but it need to be done with precision to ensure the four sets of gears are well meshed and friction free. All the work have to be recorded and by the time I'm done, it may be another month before I can get a few units of my tunnel running with different set up i.e. OB, IB/OB and the usual IB. Cheers. RE: GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home
Hi Hendricx, Need your opinion here. The OB is a straight bolt on to the hull transom. But for the IB/OB like in the full scale new development, the MHZ lowers is not of the right height for the deeper sponson of my tunnel. I intend to do an extension or adapter plate for the MHZ unit. In this way the prop shaft will be lowered by some distance from the cavitation plate. Thus enough to give the bullet a 1/8" height from the sponson bottom.

Thanks. Built from scratch. All of my F1 look alike tunnel boats are built from scratch to suit the category of engine I want to put in, for the different categories of locally mod engines. Have you check out the other videos showing Zen powered tunnel Inboard set up. I'll get some pics to show you the conversion of chainsaw engine to left hand turn. Currently replacing new parts to my old ones and getting them ready for races. My Pioneer 29 will either go into current tunnel or I'll build a new one.

Hi, 34cc chainsaw engine is a good engine to put in a boat. Mine was a 50cc and a 52cc chainsaws. Much too heavy for fun run, never mind racing. But if you want to do it, it CAN be done. Petrus, No, it's not my design. It's a 2brothers lowers I brought in for my OB tunnel. Shown below is the pic of the lowers. Hi Dion, Daz hull really is a labour of love. He deserves all the accolade for such a great effort. It'll be on the water soon and I hope to win my bet with him lol, The concept of this tunnel is "better by design". How is yours running now? . Yep the engine is really something. You don't pay much more than a 26. Worth every penny I'd say.

Great going Bud. Can't be long now. Some pics to share with you on my progress. When the hull is done, that OB motor will be on it. A pic of my engine test craft which clocked 56.4 with out of the box Pioneer 29. Amazing power plant, I must say. No tweaking needed. Once engine peak after a few more runs and some new recommended props, I expect to go 60mph and more.

Hey Bud, Great going. So close to the first run yet so far. Just wonder how many are following this thread and wondering whether this baby will have the performance to match. It's so well built and looks fast just sitting there. It would be a shame if it doesn't match up in performance. But my money is on her. She would be 80% on performance, the other 20% would be your setting , fine tuning and prop choice. I've ran mine with Propwest and got very good performance. Gonna get some ABC to try out and make comparison. You got to get cracking and get her ready to run bud. I for one am looking forward to see her maiden and confirm the 80% is a real target with the hull and in so doing, you are proving the cry "better by design" http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/micons/m9.gif All the best bud. RE: GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home
Hi Dion, Thanks for the nice word on the Viking tunnel that I raced back in the early 90s. She was one of my best scratched built wooden tunnel powered by a rather stock SST60. Built in less than a month and set up personally in two days before racing. Lost the race due to debris in the river. Did some resetting and a week later, drag race against one of the best imported tunnel from abroad then, and I outran my nephew by a good 5mph. My top speed then was 83mph. After that race, the sponsorship fizzled out. So no more building of the full Scale OB. Now, with some backing , I'll start building again. I'm never far away from this thread and have followed your progress on getting your tunnel wetted. Sorry to hear that it didn't go for the maiden. Always another day mate and all the best. You have good support from experience Tunnel Outboarders here so you should be alright. I have not got my RC gas OB tunnel going yet, so I don't have any experience to share or advise to give mate, but if there's anything you want to ask, by all means, pm or mail me. Good luck with the maiden. Rgds, La-Tiff

RE: GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home
Hi Dom, Thanks for the new year wish. Hope you all have a good 2012. Appreciate the lengthy response. I can understand the effect of the camber on the leg for a tunnel to maintain high speed turn without fear of 'barrel rolling'. I am not saying anything against a good design that your Enigma leg has proven to be. If anything I appreciate the time and effort anyone put into a new as well as innovative product. To say that the 'hull cambering' in the turn on a full scale Outboard does not work due to the outward centrifugal force of the powerhead is not really valid as I have tested and proven this fact back in the early 90s when I ran my own scratch built wooden full scale SST 60. Outboard tunnel. With life on the line when testing the full scale that ran above 80mph, you have to have confidence that the hull will lean into the turn and you have no fear of her barrel rolling when coming in hot. Attached is the only pic of my full scale SST60 OB tunnel after the flood ruined all of my boating album. Sorry for the poor pic as it was saved from a wettish ending. Got to keep up with the full scale development as speed has improved and yet less barrel rolling at the turn. Why? New development on the sponson or additional devices like the cambering of the pivot mount ? Like to believe its the earlier as it will at least confirm that I'm not on a wild idea. If any local boater wants to try copying the Enigma leg, it would be me. What I was saying in the above post was, some local boater try to apply the hull cambering application and he went over with the measurement causing his hull turning sponson to dive, wether left or right turn. I can tell you and everybody here what you need on the hull sponson to help this cambering effect and consequently turning like the hull is on rail at high speed. But it's a little lengthy. Anyone interested in trying this on their hull can e mail me at bglatiff@yahoo.com. I've been tied down with mass production process of my OB gas tunnel, so a single unit presentation and testing is not possible currently. But need to get it done within the next few months. Some pics of the new premise and work in progress. Best Regards La-Tiff 1. The successful SST60 design that I raced. 2. Filled office shelf 3. Shelf yet to be filled with more goodies 4. Workshop right behind the office 5. Work in progress for mass production of this race developed and race proven rough water hull P/s I would like to try out your Enigma on one of my tunnel if it's available. PM me the price please. RE: GAS OUTBOARD guys this is our new home
Hi everyone, Hope you all had a good Christmas and a grand celebration to welcome 2012. On the subject of camber on the OB leg, I've been wondering wether this really help the hull to 'lean in' or 'roll in' the hull when turning ? Correct me if I'm wrong please, guys. I'll start with the full scale as a reference. On the full scale tunnel, there are two trims to play with to help the tunnel run well. One is the kick in or out, to set the bow down for the turn (in) and to lift the bow and the hull out of the water when gunning for the next turn (out). The other is to increase or decrease the motor height. Decrease when you go into the turn and increase when you are already speeding away from the turn. Done mechanically on some set up. Then there are also motor mount brackets with camber set in them. In a Grand Prix racing where there are no less than 40 - 60 laps with so many turns, these trim devices or mechanism is being constantly worked to help hull performance and it has been known that a a race was lost just because of the devices being overworked and failed, and we are talking about world series. Set with the idea to decrease the use of the above mentioned trim mechanism when running a tunnel, I've researched and tested with good result that a tunnel can be made to lean into the turn without the camber leg and also jump out of the turn to fly straight and level even in choppy condition without the kick in/out trim. Hope this can be applied to my full scale build (which currently is still on the drawing board), to lessen the use of such device. It's good to have those devices on board, but to my mind, if the hull can be designed to help out there, then lesser use of those devices, so lesser chance of them breaking down to spoil your race. As a matter of fact, someone local guys tried the application on his hull, and his right sponson dug in at the turn. Apparently he didn't get his measurement right. Here are some pics showing that the hull can be so designed to lean in at the turn. Again I stand corrected. Best Rgds all. La-Tiff
