RE: A bit of a chuckle
For some reason the size I buy will only fit a park flyer reciever. [&o] John.

RE: Zenoah G-38 tips?
Thanks Ari, big Marty suggested the 18x10 & he runs a few of these engines. Also downloaded the detailed instructions for Zenoahs from Horizorn this morning, recommended prop - yep 18x10 but I suppose it would depend on the model. Who would buy Chinese at the prices Dwayne was offering? Thanks Barry, not really after power, I mostly build scale models & would size the model to suit. I'm too old to hover 3D models & wear a baseball cap backwards anyway! [;)] Seems a heavy lump of a thing (not used to gassers) but the best nose weight is aluminium! John.

RE: A bit of a chuckle
I followed that tip for waterproofing recievers in float planes. Another tip is sealing the wing/fuse join with petrolium jelly (Vaseline). The final tip is don't buy your waterproofing supplies at the same store unless you want weird looks! [:D] John.

Zenoah G-38 tips?
Gents, I find myself in uncharted waters! I've been considering a 'gas' engine for some time, just wanted one so I could say I have glow, diesel, electric, turbine & gas, but was concerned about the quality & parts backup of the perhaps too many Chinese engines on the market. Problem solved on the weekend, went to a scale fly in & a local supplier was selling Zenoah engines at half his already heavily discounted prices - bargain! Picked up a new G-38 but don't know about props (18 x 10?) or exhaust (it has the little pressed metal unit with louvres for the outlet.) It's a magneto ignition model. Starting?, will my Sullivan Dynatron do the job?, do they hand start easy with the magneto ignition? Fuel tank size for a reasonable run (15 mins)? Throttle linkage? Kill switch? I take it these things are as reliable as a brick? Thanks in advance, John.

F-86 Sabre markings placement.
I'm currently finishing an F-86 Sabre & intend to make my own small decals from decal paper for all the small writing on the plane. Markings like 'no push' , 'radio compartment' , 'fuel vent' etc. Does anyone know of a guide to what the writing is & where it goes? It's not a super scale model for competition so the markings from any early Sabre would be close enough. Thanks, John.

I'm an electrician & have wire scraps around. I just strip some 7 strand wire (7/050 wire being 7 strands of .5mm copper wire) & use one strand of that. Or use a stripped strand of 8 core data cable. - John.

RE: BVM 60
I've recently got one of these flying with a P-60. Same deal with me, bought it uncompleted. I was given the D/F 'assembly & operation manual' which has photos as well as a seperate 'turbine conversion manual' which also has photos. As well as these there were countless sheets of paper detailing various parts of the build as well as addendums & modification booklets. Uncle Bob used to publish bulletins for his products & there were mods for the F-86 in those as well. Didn't notice any references to a seperate photo sheet in mine. - John.

RE: Thorpe F-20 build
THEY MERELY CREATE A SMALL FLARED LIP AT THE ENTRANCE. RON.
I was told that one of the reasons for the bell mouth was to support the front of the thrust tube from collapsing as the engine thrust creates a vacuum which draws in the cooling air. On my BVM pipe I did what Ron mentioned, jusr flared a small (3 mm?) lip at the entrance to the pipe. So far, so good! The flexible cables you used driving the control surfaces concern me. With your radio on can you push the control surfaces back against the cables really firmly without them kinking? Also, are they 2-56 brass threaded couplers soldered on the cables? I've never used these since one snapped where the threaded portion joins the tubular section, happened on a friend's trainer on the elevator, you can guess the rest! [&o] I only use the larger, steel 4-40 versions with maching clevises. - John.

RE: Whats up with kits?
I agree an ARF for the most part is not built as well as one would do when building a kit from scratch.
You're right, an ARF isn't as well built as most average Joe's would build, it's much better. I think you may be forgetting how poorly the majority of 'real' modellers actually build. Sure, some guys can build magnificent models but remembering back to the pre-ARF days the average model at the club field was very average indeed. Don't get me wrong, I'm a scratch builder, although like most scratch builders I do own an ARF or two, but I wish I could cover a model with film as good as a 14 year old Chinese girl. - John.

RE: Starting ?
I use a 2V Gates lead/acid cell to start a couple of my turbines. The propane/butane mix (camping gas) needs quite a hot glow to ignite. I've never measured the voltage, at the plug, under load but the battery has quite long, thin leads so there would be some voltage drop. The plugs are lasting surprisingly well if you remember to take the power off the plug shortly after you start to spin the engine up. If you forget & throttle the engine up before removing the plug lead they don't last long at all, I imagine things get quite furious in the combustion chamber at 190,000 rpm![X(] - John.

RE: ME 262 info for Father & Son Project
Have you guys given any thought about how you would deal with an engine failure/flameout on a model 262.
Some guys on RCU were building a pair of 262's but the Me 262C1-a variant, a rocket boosted version with shorter rudder & a tailpipe at the back for a single engine install. I think they fudged the size of the outlet & the intake ducting is a mystery to me but if you are not too worried about exact scale appearance it could be a safer way to model this beautiful plane. Is it just me or does a twin turbine model lack that exciting twin sound that prop driven models have? A friend is building a 2 metre (Airworld?) version for a pair of Wren 44's, it worries me! RE: Super Sport does not start
What oil have you been using? When I ran my SS using Castrol TT (one of the recommended oils) it seemed very sluggish to turn over on the first run after not being used for a while. I'm using Mobil DTE Light oil now & no problems. How's your battery, if you haven't used it for a while it may not be 100% despite a fresh charge. Is there another you can use, I use a 2 cell 1400 mAh Lipo on mine. - John.

RE: Starting ?
A 'glow starter' (or 'stick' as some refer to them) is powered by a single NiCad or NiMH battery of 1.25V-which is generally a little low for a Cox (plus you need an adaptor to fit the Cox head).
I've used a single 'D' size nicad (4000 mAh) for more than 30 years on all my glow engines, including Cox engines when I had them. Always reliable starts. - John.

RE: Wow Vulcan low passes from above perspective - VID
Some interesting info on the Canberra on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Electric_Canberra Included is information that Britain's first nuclear bomber force were 'borrowed' B-29 Superfortresses until the V bombers were ready. The Canberra was equiped for later, smaller 'tactical' nukes. It's both sad & realistic that we will most likely will never see the likes of these types of machines produced again. - John.

RE: totally enclosed linkages..looking for troubles
I have only used Swingee's once on the rudder of a 40 size model. It was slop free for a while until I bumped the rudder getting it into the car. It then had miles of slop & being buried in the fin I made a real mess removing it. My BVM Sabre uses a torque rod with a metal arm on the end. Cables then to a servo mounted forward. Doesn't take up much room & being all metal would be heat resistant. It's not real solid though & feels a bit springy. Room for that set up? John.

RE: Choice - To much of a good thing!
And that's only channels, without then trying to figure out about the different FAST or FHSS systems
What seems to be the way to go is continuous frequency hopping 2.4 Ghz radios. For many years Spektrum/JR have been promoting how their 2 freqency switching system is superior. First one system, then another, satelite recievers etc etc, always changing & fiddling. Then, at first in Japan on the quiet, then the rest of the world JR have also changed to a continuous frequency hopping setup like their competitors (Futaba, Hitec, Airtronics/Sanwa etc). If you are going JR I would suggest waiting until the new system is available where you are. When I changed from 36 Mhz to 2.4 Ghz it meant totally new transmitter & recievers so I went Futaba after 2 decades with JR. It's worth remembering though that probably millions of succesful flights have been made with the old JR 2.4 Ghz systems.
Radios change so what you think is future proof probably isn't. In a few years, who knows what will be available? The current whiz-bang 2.4ghz stuff may be 'old news,' replaced by something even better. If JR is your favorite, you can get an XG6 for about $230, and go for the thousand dollar plus unit later.
Intersesting thought. I've always been a ''buy the best you can afford first up' thinker but with the constant changes in technology you are probably right. - John.

If you have problems with tape goo try kerosene (not jet A & with out oil mixed in it.) Don't ask me why but it seems to disolve tape & sticker adhesive & is usually kind to paint. Saw a sticker on a restored 60's car in a magazine - ''built, not bought''. No need to explain. Must go, time to do some painting myself, crap weather here & a BVM Sabre needs some colour. John.

RE: I am depressed!
I can go online and get exactly what I am looking for in seconds. Order it and move on. Why should I continue to support the LHS when such ignorance exists? Very sad! Sad,sad, sad! Speedy G
Part of the downward spiral of retailing I'm affraid. On line = no stock, no premesis, no staff, no insurances etc. You order from the flashy website (one or two guys in an office (garage?) they then order from a supplier & on ship to you. I'm sure some biggies like Tower have stock & staff but they keep costs down through volume. LHS = rent, insurances, staff entitlements, uniforms, stock, every expense you cann think of down to soap & toilet paper in the crapper. Oh, almost forgot, the staff like some reward for turning up as well! The staff traditionally seem to be modellers between jobs or young kids earning pocket money. There's the problem ....... Pay peanuts, get monkeys. John.
