RE: 2 death 4 wounded in model airplane crash
I have always been a Jet Fan. I am going to be building a ShokJet top winger soon. A few friends are avid Jet guys. Last Year there was a spectacular BVM Ultra Bandit Explosion/crash at Fox Valley Aero Culb in St. Charles Illinois at a popular Jet Rally. A high speed pass and disintegration of the airframe. No one was hurt. The video by various spectators has never been seen. It seems to me there was a concerted effort to NOT allow the tapes to be made public. Conspiracy theories have abounded here, Seems dishonest to me, however, I understand that speculation of the cause was what feared the most. I am not buying that fact. While this incident is locally famous, I have not read much about it, so if there was a cover up , it worked. Still , locally it is talked about all the time. No one likes thier dirty laundry Monday morning quaterbacked, and a good joib of making the tapes disappear was done. At the recent FVAC rally we were allowed to sit at the end of the runway less than what seemed a safe distance under our canopy. Approaches by some of the jets had us looking for a safe exit route out of the canopy..... really the only scary scary one was a prop plane that was allowed to fly. Perceptions are everything though. I know the Safety Officer and told him how we felt, and he duly noted it. We need to be upfront with ALL failures, no matter the consequences or pride. My Shokjet will be flown only after many checkouts by pilots I will defer to for thier knowledge. This is in the best interests of keeping our hobby as little governemt regulated/banned as possible. If we don't self police, we will lose our hobby. The FVAC Ultra Bandit Crash and it's non-discussion/disclosure is one example of selective reporting , in my opinion. I would stand to be corrected. It sure makes great fodder for speculation at all of our "crash coffee clatches' at the field.

I took off my twin 3W106 and went to a DA-85, and man, I am a happy camper. Vertical till forever, smokes like it is on fire. I did vertical rolls with it Sunday.....just love it.

RE: Where's Brillelli???
I tried to talk my friend out of buying one of these 60's, it was a "darling" during the first EF 88 Yak builds. My friend bit after reading the hype. He has not had more than 5 flights , with a gas spitting, foul running chainsaw conversion. His motor needs to be sent in , but, no way,.....maybe he will send it to Ralph. One (or 2) horse motor shops are a gamble. This just proves it. BME all over again.

RE: World Models 1/3 Super Cub
Mine loves the wind, in fact I prefer to fly it on windy days, it flys much slower. This bird can handle anything... I have a set of the Hemple wheels coming. 75.00 bucks , but, they need 1/4 inch axles, and are solid foam.....they may not work out. I would prefer pnuematic wheels.

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Mine is currently balanced on the rear edge of the tube. It still needed up elevator trim, just a few clicks. It needs a slight push during inverted , also. Balanced right on the tube it be well within your trim limits for maiden, don't be suprised you have to stab at the elevator trim right after takeoff. I will be going a little farther back when the motor is broke in and smooth. The numbers in the manual freaked me out , also. Anythng forward of the tube may cause you to not have enough trim, be careful..... I am putting , squirting a lot of gas through my DA-85, hoping to get through the break in soon. I can putt-putt this baby around like a parkie....

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Ditto, I would be embarassed to put mine next to Mitsu's. Mine is quite the ugly , beat-up duckling. I am really interested in comments and perceptions on different CG Locations. I have my CG just at the edge or a little forward of the trailing edge of the tube. It still needs a slight amount of up trim for level flight upright, flipped on it's lid, a slight push is needed. This location according to the specs is behind the rearmost recommended point. I want it farther back still,. High speed KE takes almost full rudder. And it seems top heavy in a hover. I fly an EF and I can't stop comparing the two, although they are vastly differently shaped machines. Upright full elevator, power on flat spins look great. It does them so easily , I could train someone to do the manuever on this bird. With the this CG it drops down for landing like a trainer. Tail up landings, even dead stick, are a piece of cake. My 85 is running cooler and better with the bottom gutted out of the cowl. Batteries are charging up, and today will be more tune up.

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Man, you guys have made this bargain bird into a show-bird. Kudos to you guys. My beat up bird, on the other hand, is ready for re-maiden. I have the DA-85 back from DA , it was re-sealed. I cut the bottom of the cowl out almost completely. I re-straightened the landing gear in a vise....it is ugly, but almost straight!!!! I beefed the all motor box joints , again. If I had the time , I would love to make mine as nice as yours, Mitsu. Nice job, I am a big fan of elevator mounted servos, the geometery is the big reason I love it. The convenience is the reward for the work. Hopefully, I can get a few gallons through her , putting around breaking in the engine, this weekend.

It's monokote...the stripes peel off. THe call sign on the side is from Europe. I have the damage just about repaired on mine from last Sunday. Just alittle bit of balsa work. The windscreen is going to be duct taped or cobbled with other material. I can;t get the windshield till next week. The re-built bird is much tougher than the AEF. I tell people it is scratch built with an ARF used as a template.....LOL. The 106 is going to haul this biurd around Sunday!!!

RE: World Models 1/3 Super Cub
You know, I thought my 106 was fine without baffling. It never really worked hard, and the heads were fully exposed on top, maybe one fin down. I thought that cutting the cowl laterally at the middle of the vent holes, all the way back, would be a good two piece cowl solution. Then the baffling becomes easier. I never made it that far, but my 106 is at Cactus now getting checked out. I ran my 106 with the endpoints set at 70% throttle. It was all it needed, and my curve was soft. Try the DL without the baffling , making the head holes big. Allow enough relief around the exhaust pipes, Air in ,air out. BTW, I have been flying the Cub daily, and I lost the 1lb weight on the motor mount , with a little down trim , it flies fine. The 106 really did make this plane nose heavy. The DL should be spot on.

RE: Extreme Flight 87" Yak 54 - Build & Fly
I have a complete one of these RTF that I would sell. But, given the bloated market on this class of bird, it probably wouldn't sell. I have so many planes, and this one has not yet flown this year. Before it flies the tank clunk line and all lines ,actually should be replaced. I love this bird, I just don't have the time to fly it. There are too many others in front of it in the hangar. DA-50R Carbon Spinner, Menz prop. Fromeco Li-ons, Fromeco Regs. 8611's , SWB everything, Spring latched canopy. Alum Gear, TNT gear. Just over 15lbs. Good condition. 1500 picked up in Chicago.

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
AFPD ...Addison Fire Protection District, or Antioch Fire protection District? The hole is like 2 x 2 with a little slant to it , ala the slant of the carb. I alum angled mine my corners, and tri-stocked with hardwood everywhere I could. The wood that the firewall is made of seems to be very good quality. The sides of the box are very strong, the bottom is suspect. However, after I beat the snot out of mine for a few flights , the bottom seam did separate, some, not much , but the box integritiy was still solid. I am glassing it over . You can come and see mine fly when the DA gets back next week. I don't think we are very far apart, I wil lbe at the Tri-village/Northwest R/C Fly-in next week, at the Shoe Factory Rd. flying field. There I will be flying my 1/3 Super Cub. For sure, the baffling will take a creative approach like Mitsu's. I will fab something up for the 85 when it comes back.

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Robinhood, man, that looks like an Ivory Palace in that bird. Absolutely gorgeous. One thing is for sure, if you have any blowback, or smoke oil mishaps , clean up will be a breeze. Wow. My bird was not initially bult by me, but my one Pin switch is above the wing mid-chord in one of the voids. The ignition switch, a JR HD Charge SW, is mounted on the cowl, again not my choice. I prefer one switch for the whole plane. One Pin-flag switch , soft reg shutdown. The Smart-fly Opti-kill controls ign power and is DEfaults to OFF when the receiver is powered down. I plug and unplug my Relions during assy, and dis assy. Nice Job, Robin, best interior shot I have seen in quite a while. I have a scratch built Tri-Pacer that my Pop built 20 years ago with the same treatment. Beautiful.

Trying to deside on 100cc or 85cc dont want to cut the cowl but would like to see what the 100cc's would look like and how they fly????? THanks Matt
I Don;t know how you guys with the twins are going to get enough air through the cowl to cool them. I know I will be gutting the bottom of mine, for sure. It may have to be braced with cf and overlayed glass , just for support. The only way I can see getting enough air through is opening the bottom completely, or fabbing a rear facing scoop. Some very delicate dremeling of the louvres may help , too...[:-][:-] Even baffled , where would the air go in a twin install? And have a larger exit than entrance is near impossible. I really think a healthy motor is going to need this cowl to be swiss cheese....um, Russian style[;)] I am just going attack mine with the dremel and Sharpie marker and see how it turns out. If the bottom, after being gutted, makes the cowl flimsy, I can lay cf rod around the perimeter of the hole and glass over it. Pain in the butt, but I can;t see another way.... Anyone?
It ends abruptly 'cus the Video Camera was junk, and a newbie was doing the taping. LOL. Hey, I took the motor off for return to DA , the base gasket was leaking a bit (common , I quess), to send to DA. Good time for inspection. The motor box has held up...the sides are very strong. But that angled bottom piece's seam is problematic. That is getting some re-inforcement if I can create the angle in a piece of hardwood. F1 former, the canopy bulkhead, is a little weak right where it meets the fuse. Check. Other than that, this bird took 2 good hits and is holding up.

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Mitsu, during the baffling you have to provide ample exit space for the air, I am sure you know this already. And unfortunately, that is going to be a real trick with this cowl. I am taking the dremel to the louvres, and gutting the bottom of the cowl. A rear facing scoop to suck the air out would be sweet, but glass fabricator , I am not. Axis , yes, this plane is very straight. The pull-pull was started but changed back to rear mounted servo style bythe previous owner, I think he had alignment problems. I am using 1 8711 on the rudder, with the servo hole re-inforced and beefed. I Gooped my Kavans on the inside of the rims and they are holding. But, I do need to order some landing gear...[:-][:-]

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Robin, nice install, I love the blue line, would love to have a source of it here locally. Dave, come on down. Yes , the Golf dome is E-flight only,LOL. Wood blades only on helis...dont ask why. Axiss....that DL100 should be fine. I think if you stay with the petrol oil, and don't wail on it , the DL's it wil last long. I deadstick crashed my Lanier Yak Sunday morning. First flight of the beautiful day, 3 minutes in , needles finally set for no blurbling, running great. Not. There is little/none air exit in this cowl. It got hot and quit, I know this 'cus after the crash, and a long walk, the motor was still very hot. The louvres, ans the cyl hole, exhaust all have to be bigger. I am going to dig out the louvre holes for sure. Maybe even a complete open bottom. DA's "pink up" when overheated. Mine was not pink at all, but you could notice a patina change, for sure. Piston OK, plug tan. The worst damage was the landing gear, I got idown flat after a long glide and piro through the field. Flattened it out completely, but it absorbed the 3 foot drop at the end. F1 canopy bulkhead broke free, motor box OK, strong firelwall. Broke the Menz 26x10 . THe air flow is the big issue. If you guys are sticking the plugs out the sides, by all means, open it up for the cyl heads and let the air flow. I bet I could straigthen this gear, but if I can get replacements, I will. CF gear would have destroyed this bird on impact, aluminum all the way for me. I was doing HARD 1/2 throttle flat spins , flips, and KE spins right before the deadstick.....the motor was HOT. LOL. So, my Russian blonde, (EF Yellow and Black 88" Yak) was jealous of my new Russian Redhead, and put the hex on her. I immediately went home , and took the blonde out for a long day of love. LOL.

I currently have a G-62 in it, as the 3W 106 is in for a check-up and possible ignition replacement. The 106 will go back in for sure. The G-62 is ENOUGH , but not enough for spirited aerobatics. Stall turns are STALL turns with it. Absolutlely no vertical performance, but enough for Sunday lazy flying for sure. I want the monster back, so I can get a little more daring with it. Actually , a DA-85 would be PERFECT. I just got one, but it is going on a light scratchbuilt airframe after break-in. It would be PERFECT for this plane . PERFECT. I have the 106 so I will use it, and it looks really cool sticking out on each side.

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
Hi Dave, Check www.rsmrc.com That is our club website. 30 years at the same field. 3 miles due east of Ohare. We will be maidening an Extreme Flight Extra 300 88" 50cc bird this weekend for a friend. Dawn to Dusk. Shiller flying Field. Irving Park and Cumberland rds. in Schiller Park. Straight shot down 294 get off at the Ohare exit Mannheim rd south to Irving Park turn east 3 miles. Listen , one other thing about this bird and the 85. Absolutely everything is being shake tested on this yak from the wheel pants (plastic blind nuts) to every joint on the nose. And The 85 is WAY overpowered for this bird. IMO. A smoother twin would be the ticket. Not neccesarily a 100, a smaller one would be fine. I am running a Menz 26 x10 and I think the 85 would have a softer power curve or more manageable thrust with the Mejzlik 27x10 TH or thin series peops. This full chord Menz just bites so hard that slow speed throttle resolution is very very touchy(tight). Breath on the throttle, and it is moving fast. And I have a pretty good curve dialed in. The TH prop might widen the slow speed RPM management. IMO. When I can get my hands on one I will try it, and post. The 85 is an awesome motor and I looking forward to putting it on my scratch built 35% DR-109 after I am done with it on this frame. I would like to fully break in the motor on this bird , these motors get better with age, and then put her on my scratch built baby (DR-109). Hell, I bet this bird would be fine with RCIGN modded G-62, at least for sport flying. The 85 is just soooooo overkill. And that is fun , too. WOT vertical spinning at full rate, it looks like a top you just pulled the string on. [:D][:D][:D]

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
No standoffs on the DA-85, use a plywood spacer. Mine came with standoffs and I have to change them to a ply spacer. THe standoffs reportedly can twist the case, or contribute to it. That really is'nt much of a carb hole. The DA-85 carb would not fit throught it. Mine carb needles are right at the edge of the firewall with the carb into the box about a 1/4 inch. Of course, I dont know the recommended spec distance. My canopy just about blew off, tonite. I was 1/2 throttle flat spinning it upright. When I came down, canopy was blown out in one place, again, it looked like fuse had bowed and broke a bit by the canopy screw holes, almost pulling one through. And the top of canopy wood was cracked . I am just going open up some of the back of the fuse, for peace of mind. I need very very little rudder, maybe 11 deg (quess) for 90deg KE at mid throttle, a hint of reverse aileron. I am going to go farther back on the CG. Farther than 7.25 inches. Maybe to mid-tube exactly or slight behind center of tube. I Gooped my KAVANS to the hubs and they are fine in the grass now.

RE: New DA85 vs DA100
I too, have a LAnier 94" Yak and DA-85. Got it used from a friend that had to sell it quickly. After I set it up on my radio, we started the motor.....WOW!!!!! He had never changed the carb settings in the few flights that he had. It rattled and shook SOOOOO bad that the three buddies that were holding and helping looked like deer in the headlights scared. They screamed "shut it of!!!!". It was so rich on the low end it rattled like a Herman Munster baby rattle. I have been steadily leaning it out trying to get rid of the burble.....so far every landing is a deadstick after final turn and throttle down on final glide. Runs reliably at idle after start on the ground but it is getting closer. It makes insane power , pulling this 19lb 12oz plane vertical well before the carb is half way open. It belongs in a much heavier aircraft, for sure. Menz 26 x 10.
