Halp!! old kyosho p-51d
Hi anyone..... a friend of mine is trying to ressurect an old rc foam parkflyer. H e doesnt have the orig box anymore but we think it is a Kyosho brand p-51d electric park flyer, well, we know its electric, problem is that the gear reducer on the nose is stripped. I'd like to find him one to get this plane in the air but i can't find one on the net. The motor is marked as a Kyosho LeMans AP36 but there are no numbers on the reduction unit to track down. is this a lost cause or am I just not looking in the right pplaces? If i was closer to a big hobby store I'd try to retro-fit it with an outrunner like on my parkzone corsair. Any idea? the plane itself is in great shape for how old it is 20 or so yrs he says.... Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks, Bronco

RE: Choosing a muffler..
Just a follow up on this post, a couple of months late but oh well,... Did some follow up and my local online hobby store manged to get this responce from a Century rep.. "Yes, the Raven has a 14T pinion - this gives it a ratio on the Raven with its gray primary gear of 8.73 which is better for larger engines that do not have to turn up as high to producce power then do the smaller (32) engines. That is why the Hawk with the 13T/black primary gear resulting in a 9.76 ratio is generally considered better for the smaller engines that have to rev more for their power. Using the 14T pinion on the Hawks black pinion will give the 9.1/1 ratio of the early Falcons. Weather this is better for the current OS37 engines is still debatable, as I find they love to rev for power also. But for the retail cost of the 14T pinion (CN2224) of pnly about $15.00 many like to experiment with it." for my hawk pro I bought the raven pinion and installed it. took a little bit of doin' to get it on there.I had to remove one of the spacers under the oem pinion , then I had to file the pinion shaft set screw flat spot cuz the set screw on the new pinion sits a little lower on the shaft. I also had to carve a bit of plastic out of the mainframe body to fit the wider pinion gear base diameter. Gear mesh to the main gear was a little on the tight side but i figured that it turned freely enough so it would be ok. Result was alot more jam with my OS46fx-h. Very happy with the change so far... just to let you all know how it went for me.... bronco

Futaba 9ZHP
Hi, I have a 9Z radio I bought second hand two yrs ago. It's been, and still is a really good radio for me. But just recently its started acting up. The rudder control stick only seems to work the way it should when the throttle is either all the way down or all the way up. Anywhere in between and you can watch the rudder servo indicator pointer on the atv function screen bounce all over the place. This happened once awhile back to the aileron joystick but while I was trying to figure out where to send it for repairs and trying it every other day the problem seemed to just go away. Now its resurfaced on the rudder joystick. I live in northern British Columbia, Canada and was wondering whats the best way to go about getting this radio serviced and repaired. Does Futaba have a service center anywhere in Canada? I've been to the service website for Futaba and thankfully this radio is not on the list for non-serviceable radios. I started filling out the service request form but when I had to enter my address there's no where there for a canadian address. Easy enough for me to put it in anyway but I'd figure I'd check to see if there was another way to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I dont want to fly the heli anymore until I know for sure this time that its not going to mess up. How do people ship transmitters for repairs? Do they box them up or send them in their carrying cases? Thanks for any help you can give.

EZ start help
Hi all' quick question...... i have had 2 revos for about a year. recently both of them have started to have the same problem. The one way bearing or sprag bearing in the ez start that turns the crankshaft have started to slip all the time. If I take the Ez start gear train apart and clean the bearings up it works good for awhile then they start to slip again. I have 2 new bearings that I ordered for this but I havent put them in yet (no time). I was wondering if it is the bearings wearing out or does the crank journal where this bearing rides wear down? Guess Ill find out when i put in the new bearings but was wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Thanks,, Bronco

Thanks rotor, I'm gonna have to go for the alternate drive gear as you suggested. With the carb set up as good as i know how ( not very), and a new throttle curve it still doesnt seem to have much jam. Not compared to vids I've seen of these things on the net. I'm still havin a blast with it so no biggie. thanks for the help Bronco

Choosing a muffler..
Hi all, quick question...... Bought me a Century 30 size airwolf last year that had a OS 46 fx engine. (remember me Scyclic?)It flew ok except for newbie pilot error..... I recently bought the Century 30 mechanics and I am now flying it as pod & boom. When i got the mechanics I also asked the dealer for a good muffler as well since all i had was the century scale muffler which did a pretty good job of blocking access to the idle mix screw on the carb. They sent me the" Silent Power Tri-flow muffler 50". Problem is that I cant seem to get any decent head speed out of this engine now. I cant try the square scale muffler again to rule out the size change cuz "SOMEBODY" stripped the threads on the darn thing somehow. Anyways, the mechanics kit I bought came with a 30 size muffler which i think will fit but before i change it over I was wondering how the muffler affects engine performance. Is it a case of getting the right size muffler to give proper fuel pressure or for the right amount of engine back pressure, or a combination of both? The 30 muffler that came with the kit is way way smaller than the tri flo and no specs are given on it. Basic question is if I bolt on the kit muffler to try it can I blow my engine? Wife wouldnt be too pleased with my next purhase if it does....... Thanks fer any input you can give Bronco

OS 46 fx-h
Hi there, Was wondering if I could get some pointers on a little prob I seem to be having. . Os 46fx-h engine will only run when incredibly rich. I mean to the point that the muffler is dripping from its outlet. The muffler is a Cenury Silent power tri-flo 50. Lots and lots of smoke in the low to mid-range rpms and bogs down to nuthin at 3/4 throttle at factory carb settings. Trying to lean it out either stalls it or it wont start until u back out the mixture screw. can barely get 1200 rpm head speed out of this thing. Max pitch is 9 deg on the blades but it starts to die long before that. The heli is a stock Century hawk pro. I think the cause could be a fuel brand swap i had to make cuz the local store used to carry 30% XP heli fuel but have recently stopped due to a scrap with their supplier. Now the only 30% I can get is from a diffrent store and its Cool Power 30%. Hopefully the answer isnt to stay with the original fuel cuz I just cant get it. The probs basically started on the second tank of the new fuel. Before that it flew dandy.(fer a beginner). Should I pull the heli apart and check the air inlet screen to the carb? Cant see it when its in place and I have been flying in a relatively clean environment so i really dont think its blocked. Any Ideas would be apreciated Bronco

Landing issues
Hi all, pretty much done flyin for the year, but Ive got one more question. Ive got the century airwolf 30 with an OS46 fx motor. lots of smoke but any adjustments to lean it down a bit and it wont start, so there it sits, basically factory carb settings. . I can take off, hover nose out and nose in, and if i decide to get a little altitude for for forward flight all is fine, a little shakey still but I'm getting better. The problem is landing. I've gone thru 4 main gears already cuz the thing comes down too hard and the tail rotor bites dirt. what I need is some better input on what to run for pitch and throttle curves. I've seen the throttle curve & pitch vids on another site but it seems that when trying to land having the pitch and the throttle both go down at the same time creates too quik of a decent. The bell 222 on real flight simulator seems to ramp up to a set rpm (per condition it sis in) and stay there before positive pitch is reached (50% collective) when increasing the collective. Should a heli be flown when the collective stick is raising and lowering BOTH the pitch and the rpm's? or should I set the radio up so that bythe time I get to 50% collective ,the rpms are as high as I want them to go, then the rest of the stick control is just the pitch going from 0 degrees to max positive? By the way I have a Futaba 9Z heli radio. Thanks fer the help I got one of these bounce once, grind her in landings on vid, I will try to get it on here.

Aero tech blade covering
Hi all, Crashed the airwolf a week ago. New parts are here and the heli is almost ready to go. except for the required paint job nessecitated by the fiberglass repair on the tail boom. (never liked the black and white anyway, too boring) . I do have a question about the 550 mm wood aero tech blades. I bought new ones and they are ready to go, but the ones involved in my experiment with gravity also seem OK. They balance out good still and there are no nicks or gouges in them at all. The problem is the white plastic covering on them. It seems to have shed. Tears in one of them close to the rotor head and the other one is torn right around at the tip of the blade root createng a scabbard so to speak. Can I recover these blades or is it even needed? The fella at my (sort of) LHS says i could paint them if i wanted to, but for spares if i didnt care what they looked like I could fly them as-is. Any thoughts? I know blades are relatively cheap, but I just cant bring my self to toss these just cuz of a little torn plastic. thanks, Bronco

RE: Oh Crap. Is This A Problem?
Just thought I'd add my two cents, being a noob as well you can take it for what it's worth. There are certain set-up videos out there (not sure if I'm supposed to mention them or not) that explain setting up the linkages etc on certain heli's. I dont have the kind the guy is setting up but its still a darn good teaching aid. the fellow in the video talks a bit about "flying the Tail" (which is what you are doing), versus "Flying the Nose" which seems to be the more accepted method of the two. It seems to me that its a preference, but "flying the tail" could have some drwbacks. If someone else (a trainer type guy) wre to try to fly yer heli, and he was a guy who flew the nose, then u may have problems. If you were to try to fly someone ele's heli, and they didnt mention that it was set-up to fly the nose,(Opposite of your bird) you could be in for a surprise. This is actually an example the fellow in the vids discusses, saying he almost crashed someone elses heli cuz it was set up to fly the tail, and the owner didnt mention it. Like I said, Just my two cents

recovering main blades
Hi all, just a quick question, the aerotech 550mm wood blades the came with my heli have a thin white covering on them that after a couple of flights seems to want to shed. theres nothing wrong with the blades themselves other than the blade ti seems of the covering have split/torn and also has ripped near the blade grip root I was wondering what this stuff is and can a guy buy it to recover the blades? Do the blades even need it? I know the blades can be replaced with only 20 bucks but I cant bring myself to toss these ones without trying to fix them up. Anyone know? thanks

RE: Hawk pro first start
Ahhh, the good info just keeps a'commin!! never even thought of a longer blade smackin the tail rotor. These blades measure 550mm from tip to the mounting bolt hole. Extending the tape measure 5 more cm's puts it right over the rotor,so I wont be doin that. I'll stick with what Ive got. Thanks again syclic, much appreciated

RE: Hawk pro first start
Yes syclic, I saw that sticky posted in another thread the other day, probably by you, and i printed it out then and that is now how my heli is set up. The max 4.5 pitch I had set was in the radio, not in the heli. James, thanks for the info on the oil residue. I wasnt sure if I should be leaning the mixture to get rid of it or not but if its normal, then all is well. The blades I believe are 550mm. last week while on a little vacation out of my little town I actually got the opportunity to go into a hobby shop that was big on RC helis and planes. (Cost me about 700 to get out the door when i was done[8|] ) but it was worth it. The guy in the store figured the 550mm blades were to small. I'm not to sure if they would have come in the kit when the guy bought it or if he chose them himself but thats what I have. The guy in the hobby store figured I'd need 620? (I think thats what he said) but I didnt have mine with me to know for sure what i had. If I need bigger ones I'll order them. Thanks again for your input guys, I need all the help I can get. The realflight g4 sim I bought in that hobby shop is a real eye opener.

RE: Hawk pro first start
It doesnt say in the manual to set max pitch at 4.5. I read that that is a good place to start when setting up the radio for beginners . Norml mode -1deg to +4.5deg. Only 4.5 deg pos so you can get hovering without going to the moon and only 1 degree neg so when it does try to go to the moon and I pull it down it doesnt go down like a rocket. Pretty much made good sense to me. I am using the engine that was bolted into this heli when I bought it. I dont know why the guy I bought it from chose this engine. Perhaps cuz its bigger. I see in reviews of this heli that it was an upgrade. Most ppl like upgrades if they can afford it. The muffler I am using also came bolted to this heli. I dont know the century part number off hand but its the square one they reccomend for scale helis. I dont know if its a good muffler but I do know its good at changing heli fuel into chainsaw oil, if i were to bother trying to collect it as it spewed out As far as singing the blades at 100% and rotor speed being ballistic, well, more to the point of my post, what is ballistic? Whats to fast whats too slow ? thats all i was askin.

Hawk pro first start
Hi all, Yesterday I fired up just the mechanics of my century airwolf and I have a few questions that need to be addressed before it goes into the airwolf fuse. I had the heli strapped down and was running the century manual suggested throttle and pitch curve settings with max pitch at +4.5deg. I adjusted carb until I had 1600 rpm give or take at 50% and I had it up to 1920 rpm at full throttle. I am having trouble finding where I read what these rpms should be. are they close? Second question, I seem to get a lot of oil residue from the exhaust. I am using XPFuel's heli extreme blend 30% nitro and 23%oil content. Lots of exhaust smoke in the midrange when most of this oil output seems to accumulate. The engine is a OS 46FX. My nitro cars dont have this oil residue but I dont know the oil content in the traxxas fuel so I cant really compare the two. The only vibration in the machine seems to be a quick hick-up at about part throttle so I think that I have to keep leaning out the mixture screw, but as i do this the WOT rpm keeps climbing. How fast is too fast for an engine? should I just keep going and then limit engine output with the atv's or is the fastest headspeed the best? Thanks for any help

RE: Older 9z and a 401 gyro woes pleeeeez help
Saints preserve us I figured it out. Based on all of your helpfull input I decided that you guys knew what u were doing and that something else had to be wrong. Its a used gyro for which I have no history. (I'll never shop ebay again). I thought that if you guys were right and If i did everything you said, the gyro would work, but it still didnt. So, I said to myself, And I knew who it was cuz I recognized my voice, I tought that the gyro wasnt receiving a sensing signal. Since I was mad and had a beer or two or three by now I yanked the sensing wire out of the receiver ans went at it with an exacto knife. Low and behold I found half a centimetr of no wire inside the insulation just before the metal contact. I cut a wire and contact off of an old servo i had and twisted it onto the gyro sense lead and plugged the bare contactor into the receiver. Still got a blinking light. After a couple of bad words I have to apologize to my children for, I reversed channel 5 in the radio. Turned on the receiver and holy crap, I gots me a steady light now. Now Ive just got a little soldering to do and get the contact back into the plastic plug and Im off to the the next hassle, whatever that may be. Thanks again for all of your help. Ive got no one around here who knows this stuff. Without your input this heli hobby of mine would have been thrown out before I ever got any airtime. thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![sm=lol.gif]

RE: Older 9z and a 401 gyro woes pleeeeez help
Yes, the rudder goes back to center when the stick goes back to center. What are you calling GAIN ? I cannot find any reference to GAIN on the radio. I think its the settngs for rate a and rate b in the atv of the gyro channel. They are set at 100% in all flight modes. the AFR on the gyro channel is set to 100% in all flight modes. I would love to assign a switch to use to switch between avcs and hh mode but I cant find anywhere in any manual that tells me what hh mode is in orderc to set a switch to it. I have been working in the gyro menu with norml flight condition set to gyro sensing type one and idleup 1 flight mode set to gyro sensing type two. Watching the servo screen when switching between these two flight modes shows the bar on the gyro channel jumping from the bottom to the top as the switch is flicked, but powering up the gyro with the radio tranmitting in either condition still gets just a blinking light. Just cant seem to find hh mode

Older 9z and a 401 gyro woes pleeeeez help
HI all, got a programming problem here. I cant get the led on my 401 to stop blinking to show that its in hh mode. Tried every set up under the sun that i can find online. Gyro is chan 4, sensing line into chan 5. gyro sensing activated in all flight conditions with type one set in norml,idleup1 and idleup2 and type 2 for condition hold. when on the bench the gyro blinks and seems to move the rudder when i turn the heli by hand. Rudder also seems to work with stick input. but no matter how or in what condition the tx is in when i switch on the rx the gyro blinks. This is on a 9ZHP radio and a brand new r319 receiver. Ive read that cuz this radio is older than this type of gyro you have to inhibit the gyro sensing and all gyro programming but then how do you set a switch to control the gyro mode? ive tried that too. Linking chan5 to a switch then setting dual rates on the gyro channel. didnt change anything either. Someone out there has to be running this set up somehow. Im pretty sure people didnt throw away their 9z radios when this type of gyro came out. Manuals for the radio and the gyro dont cover this at all. Hopefully this thing doesnt end up crashing off the workbench before I ever start the motor thanks for any help you may offer

RE: Tell me about the Century Hawk Pro!
Syclic, Thank you very much for your input. As a matter of fact I was gonna fly it first time with the mechanics in the fuge. figured it would be like a bumper, so to speak, wrapped around the expensive stuff. Based on your advice I will look into costs involved in getting those extras you mentioned. I understand that there is a few differences as the scale models supposedly have shorter tail booms, only 10 or 20 mm but wouldnt that throw off the balance of the machine?. Also I think I would have to get the front battery tray i've seen on the pod& boom models. I dont suppose they come with the canopy? ill have to check. On this heli you just stuff the stuff into the front of the fuge (with balancing in mind of course) While I have your attention I will also ask if you can tell me what kind of torque the 12v starters put out. I havent bought one yet and was wondering if a person who is a little light in the wallet all of a sudden (LOL) can use an 18v cordless drill. I plan on buying all the correct equipment but was wondering if the drill thing was ever done. As for Fraser Lake,bc , Its 2 hrs west of Prince George on hwy 16. Not a big town and I head into Prince George often. There is a flyers club in Prince and I plan to contact them soon. Thanks again for taking the time to respond with your tips

RE: Tell me about the Century Hawk Pro!
Hi all, Just chiming in my two cents. Just bought a half finished 30 size century airwolf. I am in the process of getting all the stuff to fly it.(never had any type of heli before). The mechanics I have read are basically a Hawk pro and from what ive seen so far the instructions seem pretty straight forward on them. However the instructions for the scale fuge sure leave a lot to the imagination. And if yuo've never even seen another nitro heli before(i havent) that imagination is limited.Getting the rear retracts installed required the hiring of a midget contortionist. but they look really cool. The question ive got is all i can find for fuel is coolpower with only 17% lube. The manual for the os46fx-h (never been started) says to use at least 18%. Found a site that explains how to make your own, but Im not gonna do that, got no time.will 17 % really kill the motor. I wish traxxas put out the specs for their Top Fuel, got 3 gallons of that downstairs for my revo's. Other than that my new-to-me futaba 9zhp showed up yesterday and the 309dps receiver and 401 gyro should be here soon. I'll probably be too chicken to fire it up when the time comes. Havent found anyone close to me that does this stuff. Oh well, learning is half the fun.... ill keep u posted on this newbies progress thanks for running this thread
