RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
Yes, to all of the above (they SHOULD be considered as warbirds IF they have military scheme). Event rules vary, depending on the mood of the hosting club. I tend to agree with those that limit participation to aircraft with military markings. A yellow AT-6 IS a miltary aircraft, designed to train military pilots. Piper Cub with markings were used extensively as spotter planes, point the way for the 'big guys' to lay down their heavy thunder. Blue Angles (AND Air Force ThunderBirds) are combat capable: they can be made combat ready in relatively little time should the need arise. Actually, Bearcats HAVE flown combat mission, for the French Air Force I believe, in Viet Nam, but that is besides the point because it doesn't matter whether or not an aircraft actully saw combat or not, it only matters that it was used and/ or intended to be used by the military forces of some (any) nation, for military purposes. Some events allow aircraft to be in any scheme, as long as the original design of the aircraft was for military purposes. Want to talk about gray areas? How about the Boing 707: originally designed for mid-air refueling (KC-135), LATER evolved into airliner. So would a United Airlines 707 be appropriate? Same can be said for some other airliners. Personally, I prefer seeing aircraft in Military markings at warbird events. That an aircraft evolved in a raceplane means nothing to me, I want to see them as they were over the skies of Europe, Pacific Ocean, etc. Just My Opinion.
I like your thinking, CJ! Good Post.

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
As a CD of an ongoing warbird event, I list the same expectation on my event sanction listings. All military aircraft in campaign colors (the military uniform that the aircraft wears in its service to its country) and marking are welcome. I have even specifically stated, "please no Ugly Sticks with maltese crosses (not a scale aircraft example) or Miss America P-51s (scale airplane out of uniform). I personally don't consider Miss America a "warbird" example. I don't think its fair to bring up the fact that a certain scheme is made up or didn't historically exist. That's not the point. This isn't a Scale Master qualifier where the participant is having to prove or justify his aircraft. The fact of the matter is, that if a CD wants to go through all the trouble of organizing and conducting an event, its up to him as to what restrictions (exclusionary or inclusionary) he wants to enforce and how strictly he wants to enforce them. If a CD wants to hold an event that states in his sanction that , 'Only Olive Drab P-47 Razorbacks Are Allowed' then you as an event participant should have to agree to the restrictions as set forth. If you don't agree with his efforts, ask him to relax his requirements or don't participate. Honestly, I see this a plain and simple whining because you can't get your way. Sorry. I would consider any of these warbirds under the definition of Military aircraft in campaign colors and markings:

RE: TORA, TORA, TORA, Val has landed
In many historical photos of this aircraft, I've seen the canopy open and the tail gun out. So, I thought I'd make the modifications and add some flair to mine. I didn't want to do an entire cockpit, but just add enough scale bits to make thinks look cool and keep the weight down. The stock canopy is way to brittle and flimsy in my opinion. I purchased a better production canopy made by Ty Brown from Tomas at VQWarbirds.com. Once received, I carefully cut up the canopy into the appropriate sections and then masked the entire outer surface with some paint-on liquid masking, a product from Parma http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDD28. Use SEVERAL coats of this as you will want to build up a thicker film from which you will want to eventually peel off. Once several coats have been applied and have dried thoroughly, use a new blade on your hobby knife and cut out the window frames carefully. LEAVE THE FILM ON THE WINDOWS and carefully peel off the film from around the canopy frame. Next, mask off the underside of the canopy sections with blue painters tape and spray a good couple of dark gray primer coats onto the canopy sections. I then took one of my ailerons to Home Depot and had them custon match a sample sized batch of Behr latex paint. With this paint sample, I thinned it down with about 4:1 blue Windex (improves handling and flow without color change) and just hand brushed the canopy with a good couple of coats of custom paint. Peel off the blue tape and you have some nice, color matched, sectioned canopies. I usually pay around with the sections until I like how they fit together on the plane. For the Val, I had to grind away a small thickness of the area where the third (from the front) canopy section sits so the second and third canopy section would stack up well. Using very small screws and canopy glue, I attached the windshield, and middle sections of canopy down to the fuselage. For the rear gun, I found a very nice sized Lewis gun that comes with the Great Planes electric Nieuport XI ARF. www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXYRZ4&P=Z. It is a pre-assembled and painted version that will work well for this purpose and isn't very expensive. The Japanese copied the Lewis design and employed it extensively during World War II. It was designated the Type 92. I drilled a small hole in the area just in front of the trigger area and attached a regular ole 2-56 sized clevis. Then, I made a mount using a 1/4" block of Ply and two inverted "U" shaped pieces to cover most of the clevis from the profile. I painted the unit black and will mount into the fuselage with a recessed box and a couple of rare earth magnets. This kind of detail can take quite a beating and break, so I like to make it removable for transportation and when working on it in the pit area. I'll post some pics in its finished state. Having some picture problems. WWW.WESTTEXASWARBIRDS.COM

What ideas would any of you have for a more scale looking counterweight spinner, similar to the one seen in this picture for my ESM Val? Obviously, it would be just for looks and non-functional. Thanks!

Andy: I am putting the final touches on mine and just finished programming all the radio bits. Will be balancing mine this week , then off to the field for test flying. Please tell us where you think the sweet spot is for good CG. Was it per manual at 125mm back from the inner/outer wing joint? I also have the Sierra Precision gear. They sure look great! I went with an RCGF 26cc in mine. Will be using an 18 X 6 Xoar WWII prop. Probably will keep the airspeed down. Do you know what yours weighs? Thanks!

RE: Warbirds over west texas
I think you will LOVE our flying facility! Nice and wide strip, LOOOOOOOONG! The sky backdrop is perfect for R/C, especially grey or aluminum camo on nice clear days. It has NO obstructions and nothing to distract your eye. It's older pavement, but in pretty good shape without humps or lumps. We do have some runway lights on each side that one or two have run into. (Ask Bill Holland of the Sooner Squadron guys!) We've learned to put orange pylon cones over the lights. We also have plenty of startup and taxiway, six protected concrete pilot stations and a good sized pit area. Oh, and don't forget our one lone elm tree.

RE: Warbirds over west texas
West Texas Warbirds is gearing up for another great time! Field Prep: The field prep team has been hard at it, mowing, weed eating, sweeping and blowing the site. They deserve a huge thank you! The City of Abernathy has also pledged a big helping hand with some major site mowing, sweeping the runway with a street sweeper, loaning pylon cones and a first for this year, Volunteer Firemen and Pumper Truck! You never can be too careful in such dry conditions, especially when we are expecting some turbine aircraft. (Ask those who were at Warbirds Over Texas in Aubrey!) Mall Show: Once again we will be having a pre-event mall show at the South Plain Mall in Lubbock displaying several of the Wingsmas member participating aircraft and promoting the event for spectator viewing. The Mall show is Saturday, July 30th from about 0900 to about 1800. Lots of fun for our spectators! Vendor Prizes: We did get several vendor door prizes this year, but I'm a little disappointed in the participation overall. Some of the vendors that pledged door prizes last year haven't repeated for this year. At least, I haven't heard from them yet. Horizon Hobbies continues to be a huge disappointment once again and won't do JACK SQUAT! With the amount of market share they have and considering all of their subdivisions, its really B.S. they don't participate with AMA sanctioned contests more. We have received at least some nice small donations from Tower Hobbies and Hobbico. Hobbico (Great Planes) always provides something nice! Gino DiGeorgio with Meister Scale sent a certificate for a set of plans! Thanks to him and Meister Scale! We may have a few more trickle in! Hotel: This may be a problem if you are planning to share a room with a travel buddy. Texas Tech parents weekend is the same weekend as our and visting parents are filling up rooms. Please act now to secure your rooms, guys! I may can help you if you are having trouble. Just let me know if I can be of assistance. 806-789-4922 Pilot's Dinner: Planned Saturday evening, we will be at the 50 Yard-line restaurant this year. Nice place with a private dining room just for us. Meal will be either chicken, fish or steak meal with sides, etc. Alcohol will be available for dinner. The speaker for the evening is Col. Kenneth Hite, USAF (ret.). Col. HIte is a very interesting man who is planning an evening with side show presentation. HInt: His brother flew with the Doolittle Raiders! Please send me your head count and meal selections for what promises to be a great evening. It should be great time, guys! I hope we can host some first timers and have an opportunity to get to know you! If you're coming, bring a buddy or two or three with you. What am I bringing? I will have my trusty H&M Performance Spitfire and hopefully my new ESM SBD Dauntless.

Here are some pics of last years fun!  It was a great time. You Texas warbird boys will want to know that so far, we're the only warbird event in the entire state of Texas for the month of August! Make your plans and come out to see us! The blonde interviewing Jim Ellis of the Sooner squadron is Miss Brittany Bennett. She is Miss Lubbock Centenial! She'll probably be back! RCKen: Check out the shot of the Stearman with the gear folding and the prop strike!  Nice shot, huh!?!
