RE: Northern Illinois Warbird Event
I'll be there, either with my Dauntless or not. Right now it looks like it won't be ready. Even if I can't fly it's only a 20 minute drive for me.

RE: funny or amazing crash stories
I had a Tower Voyager that flipped over just sa it left the ground on takeoff. The antenna was broken inside the fuselage, and it had gone out of range.

Detailed 3-View Drawing for SBD Dauntless
Does anybody have a detailed 3-view drawing of an SBD-5 Dauntless that they'd be willing to share? I'm trying to put panel lines and rivets on my KMP SBD and I can't find any scale drawings for it. If possible, I don't want something that I'd have to pay for. If I have to buy something, I'd rather get a plastic model. Thanks, Brian

RE: Pulse Jet 'Test Type'
That does look similar, but it is not it. There is a picture of it in the game manual, I'll post that. It doesn't show the props or landing gear though. I remember the game having a great draft shot of it, I'll try and get a screen shot of it from there.

Pulse Jet 'Test Type'
I posted this in the Warbirds forum because I don't know where to post it. There is a very old PS2 game called 'Sky Odyssey.' The game is horrible, but there is one plane in it called the Pulse Jet 'Test Type.' The plane is one of the coolest looking planes I've ever seen, it is a twin boom with counter rotating pusher props in the center. Every airplane in the game is a scale plane from the Axis in WWII, but whenever I search for this all I get is cheat codes for the game. There are several flaws in the games version which might suggest that it's a fictional plane. The big one is that it's named the PULSE JET 'Test Type,' but the apperance of the plane suggests that it's a turbojet, because it is a turboprop and the engine is not in the open air, two things that I don't think you can do with a pulsejet engine. Has anybody heard of this plane? Even if it's fictional, I still think it would be cool to build a model of it.

RE: KMP SBD Dauntless Build
That is an amazing job. I wish I could do something like that. What did you use as your source for the panel lines and rivets? All the pictures I've found online aren't detailed enough to use for my panel lines and rivets. Also, the pivot for your bomb trapese seems to have some sort of mechanism on it. I see that the bomb is stationary so is that only for show? On the full scale one the trapese only drops when the plane is in a dive, I've been trying to figure out how to reliably do that.

RE: How fast?
So is there any event that I can enter this into? It is a scratch airframe and a rare engine (you don't see K&Bs at the flight line every day), so it doesn't seem like there is. I live in central Illinois, if there is anything is there something around here?

How fast?
How fast does the average beginner-level pylon racer have to go? I'm considering getting into pylon racing, but I can't get a new plane to do it. I have a 40 sized scale Miles Sparrowhawk with about a 54" wingspan and a K&B .48 engine. I've never done an extended full throttle run with it, but I'm guessing that it will do 60-80 mph if I let it get up to speed. It's built very light. Is this quick enough to be in a pylon race? Unfortunately, I can't get a picture right now. It has bad stall characteristics when the engine dies on takeoff.

RE: KMP SBD Dauntless Build
Well, I'm out of things to do with this, again. Since the interior is going to take awhile (at least another month), I might try doing panel lines and rivets on the wing and horizontal stabilizer, and then do the fuselage and rudder once I get them. Has anybody done panel lines and rivets on a plane? I have a good idea of how to do the rivets, use some thinned epoxy based filler in a syringe, but how do you do panel lines? panel lines are supposed to be set into the finish, so are they just masked off with thin masking tape and painted over?

RE: custom exausts and sounds.
Going off the box idea a little... Part of a radials sound is the 'tuning'. All radials run off tune. Each cylinder is a different distance away from the exaust outlet. So going from this, I could make the box with 3 layers of flexible tubing, with each layer of tubing slightly shorter then the one before it. Then I could make a final section of tubing strait from the engine to the scale exaust outlets. This way, each set of ttubing will be running at a slightly different pitch, making an 'off tune' sound of a radial. If my math is correct (might not be, I'm still in high school), with two exaust outlets and four sections of tubing, I could make a 26cc engine have the same 'off tune' sound of a 4-stroke 6 cylinder engine of the same size. That is all I can do for the sound with one cylinder though, it might be pretty quiet too.

RE: Is There An ARF Similar to a Sig Kougar?
Try a Tower Voyager. It flies and lands like a dream, and it flies slow. You have to balance it specially to do a knife edge though, the rudder on it is tiny. It says how to do this in the instrucions. Trust me, it looks far better in real life then it does in the catologs. It also looks far better without the decals.
ORIGINAL: MANFRED Check out this guy! He is my hero. http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/index.php/topic,48316.0.html
Mine too! Some of the pictures he posted will help a bunch.
KMP plyon????
They have one on their website that looks just like yours. I've been looking for one like it without shipping from Canada.
As for the middle flap, just in case I have to land with the gear retracted, won't be tearing up the flap and center section of the wing...thats why I done what I done.....Good luck with yours
How would it tear it up? The control horn for their setup is on the top of the flap. I tried getting the ailerons set up yesterday, but the control horns that came with my servos are too short, so I'll have to wait until I get longer control horns to glu the servo mounts on. I'm waiting until I have something else to glue with epoxy to put the hinges in, because I can only mix my epoxy in large batches. maybe I'll work on the flap bays, they'll be using the shorter control horns.

RE: custom exausts and sounds.
ORIGINAL: Sandmann_AU The only thing that's really going to sound like a radial engine is a radial engine.
I don't know, if you connected a 26cc to one of [link=http://www.mv-knetzgau.de/img/tuba.jpg]these[/link] I think you'd get pretty close. Now if only I could fit one in a cowl. That gives me an idea, the longer the tubing is the lower the sound, so why not stuff as much flexible tubing as possible into a small wood box and connect that to an engine. It wouldn't sound like a radial, but it would get closer.

RE: custom exausts and sounds.
Ok, so that'll be easy to do, the scale exaust outlets are pretty small, which *should* reduce noise. Would a 3 bladed prop be considered as an inefficent prop? I'm planning on breaking in the plane with a 2 bladed then changing to 3 for a better scale look.

Looks great! [sm=thumbup.gif] How did you do your bomb drop? Is that the KMP pylon? What is wrong with the middle flap? I can't believe that yours turned out nose heavy, WWII radial engine planes ALWAYS need nose weight, I guess I've found an exeption. Good luck on the flight, and I'm looking foward to the video!

RE: custom exausts and sounds.
ORIGINAL: ChuckW On your 26cc gasser you could experiment with different pipes, chambers, number of outlets, etc. to see how close you can come. The problem is you only have one cylinder. It is a 2-stroke but it still won't sound anywhere near like a multi-cylinder engine which has more ''explosions'' per revolution.
That is the one major problem that I will need to overcome. The best possible engine sound I can match is the engine in a Hellcat (I'm not building a Hellcat though). It's not a loud, low pitched sound like what's in other planes. When the plane is in front of you in a pass, there is a popping sound that is most likely backfires in the mufflers. It might be possible to make the popping come from the piston strokes of the engine. Mostly what I'm looking to replicate is the "series" of sounds in a full scale pass. First you hear nothing, then a high pitched whistle, then the full blast of sound when it's passing you, then it dies down.

Tumbling
Does anybody know how to tumble an RC airplane? The only place I have seen any airplane tumble is during full scale airshows. During one of the tumbles it seems like the pilot hits full right rudder and then full up elevator, but then when I try this in Realflight it doesn't tumble. I do not have a 3D airplane in the real world, but there was a Super Declathon at Oshkosh this year that did a tumble, so you don't need an extremely high performace airplane to do this, only a large rudder.

custom exausts and sounds.
I'm trying to design a custom exaust (I cant weld anything) to sound like a WWII radial engine. The engine I am making it for is a 26cc gas engine. Does anybody know how to make a one cylider engine sound like a multi cylinder radial engine or close?
ORIGINAL: SunShyne keep it up, lets see more progress~!
I've been out most of the day, so I didn't have much time to work on it today. I got the wheel wells glued in and the struts installed. I made a mess with the epoxy on the wheel wells, which gives me more of an excuse to fill over the edges to make it more seamless, the biggest challenge will be finding the right paint without having some shipped from Canada. I have some Testors grey paint that is the right shade, but a tad bit too shiny, I might use that. Tomorrow, I will go to the hobby store and order the rest of the stuff I need for it.

Construction is pretty much at a stand-still right now. I got the servos ordered and they should be in sometime next week. When we go pick up the servos, we will pick out an engine too. I got the transmitter for it today, an Airtronics RDS8000. Now I need to find out how to mix things.

RE: KMP SBD Dauntless Build
Since I don't have any servos yet, I'm going out of order and starting with the retracts. The retracts are very nicely built and they come with some really nice tires. I cut out the covering where the wheel bays are and cut the bays themselves (which are really difficult to cut right). The bays leave a large hole in the bottom of the wing where the cylinders screw in and they don't look very good. I will make some small pieces out of scrap wood and the cut out covering to put in those holes and make them match the wing.

KMP SBD Dauntless Build
This is going to be an extremely slow build thread of my SBD Dauntless. The goal for this will be to get it flying by October for a local warbird fly-in, but the finish time will be very close. I have never built a plane of this size and complexity, so if you see something wrong with the build, please say something. Also, if you are building one of these, feel free to post your build here as well. I will be making several modifications to the plane, including a scale exaust and a working bomb drop with yolk arm. I will probably use a 26cc gas engine for power. It came packaged very nicely, as you can see by the picture, I am missing the fuselage. Brian at Dynamic Balsa has it and is putting in an interior. I hope to have that soon.

RE: Looking for an 8 channel 2.4Ghz radio
Are there any limitations for the channel assignments for the RDS8000? I will need a flap and landing gear channel, but also a dive brake and bomb drop channel. I'm worried about the dive brake channel, because there will be 5 servos in that channel and 3 of them are the flap servos, which will need to be mixed in.

RE: Looking for an 8 channel 2.4Ghz radio
Another quick question... Is it possible to get a flap dial on the Airtronics radio? I don't think the one I saw had one, but I only looked at it for a few seconds.
If it absolutely MUST be 8 channels, and not more than 8, I think your only choice is the Airtronics. Futaba has the 8FGA coming but the estimated time frame is 'Late September.'
It has to be at least 8 channels, a 9 or 10 channel would work too if it were similarly priced.
