RE: Trash-talking-free Engine Question(I hope..)
I had both LRP 30 engines. Honestly, the carburetor alone on the truggy version is worth the extra money for the ease of restarting the engine. I could not tell a nickel's worth of difference in power though. I much preferred the 30 over the two 28s I had. It is no secret that I am a Picco P3 guy, but I do like running the 30. The two extra ports are at the bottom of the sleeve, relief ports for less resistance in the crankcase I assume. I really could not tell the difference. Glen

RE: K 5.9 really that bad
Been a while since I posted, also ran a lot of fuel through the K5.9 engines with no troubles, other than bearings, seals and carburetors. I check my engines much closer than most though and would spot an issue before it gets huge. Hpi used to have superior warranty service on these, but they have started repairing instead. RE: picco .28 dead spots while full throttle
While you are checking things out, take a really close look at the bellows that cover the end of the slide. The accordion looking plastic bellows. Sometimes a hole worn in them or a small crack will do what you describe, allowing air to bleed into the carburetor slide. Nice to see the MTN man back from the paid vacation! RE: broken connecting rod
The pistons and rods are junk in the K engines, always have been. The Axial 28s and 32s have the same problems. It is nothing new, if you search,we have a lot of piston and rod history on all of these engines, along with junk bearings.

Picco 28s rock! I have the LRP 30 and a Picco 28 it is not. No experience with the Ofna 32, but I do like their .28. Tib can teach you more Picco tuning tips than anybody I know of. I need to try that new Pipe of PureNitro's. We always ran Ofna 086 pipes, but maybe that is o longer the hot setup. I am like Someguy, I love my Picco 27!! Glen

RE: So I took the plunge, and bought a Clocked Picco...
Bore/stroke ratio and superior ability to flow air. They are excellent air pumps.... it does not matter though, we cannot run the 28zx in our Savages and the 30vg is an entirely different animal. Glen

RE: need to put new engine in HPI savave 4.6 X
If you go LRP 28, Thunderbird Junkie and Herr Savage are good people to be in contact with. I like OS engines, but not their 30VG. It seems rpm limited and prone to sleeve failure. I noticed that somebody listed the LRP 28 as high speed and good low end power, then commented that the LRP 30 had a lot of low end power. That is partially true, but I do not think the 30 loses anything speed wise to the 28, and is just a little stronger all the way through than the 28, based on running multiples of each. When running the LRP engines, if your truck is hard starting after running hard, the fuel has boiled away from the carburetor and it is air locked. It will cool in a short time or you can prime as you start it. Their carbs are not insulated and they will boil fuel. Glen

RE: clocked picco in xl
I have experience with all four, the LRP 28, the LRP 30, the LRP 30 with their insulated carb off of the truggy version, the stock Picco and the modded Picco. I found the Piccos much easier to tune and a lot more fun to run. In spite of making more power, I think they get a lot more run time as well. I like them all, to be honest, but you will see more power and top speed out of a Picco. Tib's work has always been wonderful and worth every dollar I paid for it. I do not have any of his latest technology, but I am sure he has been improving and not regressing. As for backing off of the slipper clutch, that will not work. You will literally smoke that disc into charred glue in no time. It has to be as tight as you can run it without distorting the alignment of the spur gear. In the line of blowing transmissions, I could never keep a three speed working properly behind a Picco. Eventually it would beat the thrust washers into ultra thin blades and disintegrate the third gear or the final drive gear. The two speed was always much more robust, cheaper and lasted longer. I also did not have much differential trouble, until I let the truck get in the air. I think it is cartwheels and hard landings that break the differentials and not just raw power blowing them. I also think I would tune the transmission to be fairly high in the rpm range, even past peak torque. Piccos are extremely hard hitting right off idle. Wheelies are fun, but the X chassis becomes almost impossible to drive under heavy acceleration. Rock on! Have fun! Glen

RE: massive crashe
The failsafe requires battery power, your problem could have been from a battery wire, battery failure, connection, or the switch. The failsafe is great when there is a radio problem, but it is just additional carnage when the juice goes all at once. I once hit a rock wide open and the carnage was pretty severe. Wish I had taken photos. Glen

RE: the worlds best truck turns out to be worst
You may not have a third needle, in fact nobody has a third needle. Depending upon which engine you have, you may have a mid range screw, which is problematic. The K4.6 and the K5.9 engines have this screw. What you do have is a high speed needle and a low speed needle. The mid range screw is actually an adjustable seat for the low speed needle and changes where the fuel draw from the high speed needle or main jet starts. If you were lucky and bought an X RTR with the Force engine, your Savage does not have the cobbled up pile of junk carburetor that the K engines have. They can be made to work, but it takes some attention to details. Glen

RE: So I took the plunge, and bought a Clocked Picco...
I also found that a 17/47 gear on a 5" to 5.5" tire will give you all the speed the Savage chassis can handle, unless you are going to run on smooth pavement. They are a load of fun and stupid strong. Glen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3VAeFc7_uw Here is Clocked Picco 28 in the X chassis 17/47 and two speed. They are so quick, they are frustrating to play with. I sure enjoy it though! I took the Picco along, just in case my LRP 30 went on strike. Never hurts to have a good spare. RE: So I took the plunge, and bought a Clocked Picco...
I agree with Tib, when I ran 17 or 18 bells in the XL I had to grind on the chassis plates and the fins on the block to get the bell over far enough to get proper mesh. Here is a stock Picco 28 on 17/47 gear and Terra Pins. It was a heck of a load, but those tires sure gave it a lot of top end as they blew up. They look almost cartoonish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExDPpRdj_Vg This will give you and idea of just how tall they get.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meAyFVagZJ8 Glen

RE: So I took the plunge, and bought a Clocked Picco...
The problem I had with gearing up for speed with the Piccos, both modded and stock, was cooking the clutches. They are pretty brutal in the low end. I could not keep a three speed working behind a strong Picco, I had pretty good luck with the 2 speeds. G

The 30 in an X ought to keep you running to set it back on its wheels! All three of my LRP 30s had a load of pinch and were slow to break in, just do not rush it too much. Glen

RE: Savage spur gear
If you are running short tires, like 5.5" or less, that will be a pretty low gear ratio. You will have lots of power, but not much speed. Great for short tracks, jumps, deep grass, rough country etc... Glen

RE: Savage spur gear
A lot of spur gear failures are from clutch bell bearing failures. Keep an eye on those... Along the same lines, I think a lot of clutch bearing failures come from spur gears being too tight. Glen

RE: savage 4.6 rtr w/3speed tranny
The 1-2 shift is hard to get right. If it was set up for the XL, it is probably shifting way early. If I was guessing, you are getting the 1-2 shift right off idle. I have set them so tight they would not shift out of low gear, it does not take very long to figure that one out. Properly set up they are cool, I just never could keep one that way. I messed with them a lot and finally resigned myself to a two speed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJqAPcx2qtc Glen

RE: Problem keeping engine running
Where did you buy the Truck from? If ebay file a complaint and get the money back and keep the truck too. Have you tried to get help form a LHS?
You cannot be serious! The guy said his engine was mint, the truck looks new, so for some small mechanical adjustment, you kick back a sale. Post your buyer name so I do not sell to you. It is that attitude that makes selling RC parts on Ebay hard. They have started holding funds on RC sales due to a rash of your kind of activity. Oh, I cannot figure this new Picco out, it must be a faulty engine, I know, I will just file a complaint. Come on man.... Glad you have it running, I was going to ask if you were sure you had the fuel lines routed correctly. I have run into that before.... Glen

RE: Savage X starting HELP
Not a lot of information to work with, is it popping at all? Could be a plug in the fuel line or at the needle. It is common for engines to sit wet and have a jelled plug in the main needle that does not let fuel flow through. If you drop a couple of drops of fuel in the intake will it fire and die? Glen

It would be pretty early for clutch failure. I agree with Argess and the cold weather tune. I would suspect glow plug getting weak as well with the rich break in settings. RE: savage x trying to start
I am not sure about anything on an Axial being better than the K4.6, except the green color. Remove your one way and wash it with WD 40. A common problem with setting engines is the glow plug deteriorates with the gummy fuel that is left on them. You will also want to make sure you are getting fuel flow. Sometimes they get a gummy oil plug in the high speed needle seat. Easy to fix, frustrating to find. Glen

RE: lrp 30?
My first 30 was exceptionally tight and took a long time to break in. I am a Picco guy, but I really enjoy the 30. I tried the 086 and swapped it for the 053. You can run the double bend buggy style header. It will rub the shock springs at full suspension extension, I never could tell that the shock failed any faster because of the rub. Take your time, run it like you stole it, have fun. Glen [image]http://images.rcuniverse.com/gallery/photos/307501/lg-155947.jpg[/image]
