ORIGINAL: gditeam Thought: what happens when you scoop out the foam and just have a Stryker "shell" with strengthening in the needed places. Hmmmm..... a plastic shell like a fiberglass body.... wonder how well that would hold up OR if you could just have it empty. That would look crazy too. Imagine a clear stryker
You could probably do something like that. A two piece shell, but I would think that there would still be the need for Ply or Carbon formers. It would leave a lot more room for your gear. Id like to try a mold but with provisions for a mini 480 fan.
ORIGINAL: Gryphon gditeam, You wrote: "I really enjoy the 2,000 kv area" take a look at Medusa Research brush less 480 sized MR-028-040-2200 or the extra long MR-028-056-1900 which can handle running more voltage and higher amps than the first one due to its size, but it is 60% heavier than the first motor. MEGA 16/25/2 is not for everyone due to its amp requirements, 16/25/4 can not make the power of the 16/25/3 without going to higher voltage than 6S (needs special ESC). As far as general purpose MEGA motor for Stryker best in almost all cases look no further than 16/25/3 1700KV motor. It is the most versatile and sensible motor between the high performance 480 sized MEGA motors for Stryker go. Two closest choices in Medusa are listed above. You've been shows many specific examples run by many different people. You've seen a ton of specs that not even the dealers or Ken the distributor of MEGA in USA know(s) about. Apples to apples, power and quality wise, higher voltage is a little more efficient. To go super fast you will need battery weight. That will come in form of few large cells or many small cells or some combination there of. But the weight will not be low….it can not be low to make big power. You can dance around that to have super short flight times or to fry your battery early or thin your wing a whole lot….just remember power comes from battery first….These are generalizations and lets not get bogged down in semantics. You keep asking about motors and the answers will not change a whole lot. If you ask us, then that might mean that believe our answers a little at least. I'm not sure where else you can get the quantitative factual info that you can find on this thread so far. *** I am interested in working with you to cover any topics as needed. I am really sorry I have failed you in my previous posts and PMs. Nail down a speed or power, or cell count,,,fix some thing and the rest of pieces of puzzle fall in place. It is o.k. if you are not sure at the moment…. everyone feels that way at first. One suggestion would be to see how people before you made their decisions or answered the same questions that were asked of you. If you are interested in that I suggest that you read 2nd half of part 5 thread, if not then the earlier parts of this one. I will be more than happy to work with you in yahoo IM (Instant messenger) for a couple of hours Tuesday or Wed. Would that work for your schedule? We can discuss motor, prop, battery selection and the methodology used behind it all. I'm looking forward to it because you have been a valuable contributing member to this thread. So lets do it if you are serious. If you don't have Yahoo IM get one, it is a free download. I promise you the best two hours you ever spent learning about R/C stuff. We may even be done in 1/2 hour given the speed of Instant messengers. Is Tuesday or Wed good for you? Gryphon
Wish i could pack my F-14 power system into a stryker... holy crap :)

its a twin 90, and im looking for high performance. I have a power system picked but im wondering if I can do better. 2 x Mega 22/30/3 2 x tp 10S 5000s 2 x CC Phoenix 85hv 2 x Midi or Shub Ds-51 It is a fiberglass mold with ply formers, will have retracts w/brakes hopefully if i can find a rotating set small enough and I doubt twin 120s will fit.

I currently have an EDF jet I need some help picking a power system for. It is an f-14 6lb arf 56" long 58" unswept wingspan... My budget for this plane is pretty big and it is my first 90mm fan jet build. Im looking for as close to 1 to 1 thrust as possible and a half decent runtime. Any advice? B

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
ORIGINAL: Ace Dude
ORIGINAL: Gryphon How about your own Stryker and its F-27C motor mount? That is what I use. I put few books below it and a couple of real heavy objects(extra heavy) in front of wing. With big thrust I have caused small dents in the leading edge of wing in the past. So I now fold a rag in front of wing as cushion and I then tape it down. Make sure there are no papers around. It'll make a mess of the room in a second. Voice of experience...or in-experience.[:D] I do it this way because my fuse is strong, so is my motor mount area. Do it safer than me if you can and tell me how to do it better. I like to find a better way. For now, I'm looking forward to Eagle Tree Systems in flight numbers. Gryphon
I'm just looking for a mount for bench testing, something that would be permanently attached to a rigid mounting structure. I could buy another Stryker mount, but was wondering if something better was available. I think testing multiple motor/prop combinations would be much easier on the bench than in the air. Also, using the PowerAnalyzer Pro you can generate your own ESC waveform which you can replicate for every test. With this you can record your measurements at 10%, 20%, etc. throttle positions. I guest the best thing to do is order another Stryker mount and just mount it to a 2x6 or 2x8 and clamp it down.
If you are testing multiple sized motor cans you can go to home depot and get a pipe clamp called a minirilack or "mini" Its a semi-horse shoe looking clamp that gets screwed down from the bottom and clamps together with a nut and bolt at the top. I used to have a bunch set up for different sized clamps. Make sure they are for EMT and not Rigid. I'll post some pics of what they look like if i can find a few laying around.

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
I pumped 60-70 amps through my 16/25/3 on a regular basis. Get a slide on heat sink, cut it to cover whatever motor can stick out of the mount and squeeze thermal paste between the can and sink. The phoenix 80 is a great controller. Can't say anything bad about it. I also used the Titan 80 opto which is still going strong I used a medusa 2a bec and medusa opto isolator. Before TP had their extreme series battery I used an off brand "extreme" pack which worked but you'll get better results with the TP extreme packs now. I used 2 3 cell packs and harnessed them in series just for space reasons. There are other options for motors and controllers... there are motors out there like Neu, Lehner, Hacker and controllers such as the Hacker Master series but your looking at huge money to get into these. Your best bang for the buck is going to come from mega and CC hands down.

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
my first stryker build i did on my own was a mess. it rolled wildly to the right when it wanted to gain any kind of speed.. had a ton of fiberglass cloth on it and a shabby paint job. Once i worked out the issues I wound up snapping the fuse in half some 300 feet off the deck. I didn't just change from 3 to 6s. I went from 4s, 60 amp controller and a 6x4 prop to 6s 25c 2100s, 80 amp controller, props from 6.5x5, 6.5x6.5, to 7x7 and max timing advance on my speed control. Every little bit makes the difference. Keep your gear cool and it will be happy. Even how smooth your final finish is makes a little bit of a difference :)

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
I dont know if this part about modding your stryker has come up in the thread or not but.... Its not just a matter of dropping in hefty gear and lots of batteries and calling it a day. You can just drop big gear in and have a fast stryker but your not getting the full potential out of your setup. The stryker airframe has quite a bit of lift built into the airframe. If you look at my pictures above where there is no covering on the fuse yet you'll notice that the fuse is a bit cloudy. I sanded the wings to make them thinner and more rigid and reinforced key areas to strengthen the airframe. You are actually removing lift from the airframe but reducing drag. After all is said and done once you pack in all your gear your plane should want to climb on its own very little at full throttle with the ailerons in the neutral position. Having to trim out a lot of climbing will provide a temporary solution and keep you straight but it adds drag an slows you down. The little bit of climbing will come from the thrust angle on the motor mount unless you shim it to 0 degrees.

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
I would have liked to, but i dont think its an issue of making the body strong or rigid enough. I think the problem is fitting enough gear in for a 200mph application and have more than a minute or two of runtime. Off topic but you played a bit of c&c renegade didnt you? :)

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
Hey guys, I haven't posted in some time. Good to see gryphon started this round of thread. I just thought i would post a few pics of some of the stryker work I did about a year ago just incase any of you wanted some ideas. My reinforcement was good for over 120 mph as well as keeping things cool. Take a look. Those protrusions along the side of the fuse and in the nose in the pics is an aluminum tube cut at angles for direct airflow over the batterys and speed control. The two long tubes in the nose went under the receiver and blew air onto the batteries. I dont reccomend the nose tubes unless your pretty confident you can go without nosing your plane as it will more than likely pierce your packs. The stryker C canopy assembly has a good cutout placed on the hatch that will probably be just as effective.

RE: Need some help sizing retracts...
Putting them on the mains was my first thought, but I need rotating mains for space reasons and im not sure if that will be a problem for brakes... If I can not get something thats not to heavy without brakes another thought I had was to just have a spare channel toss a chute out of the tail to slow it down. I looked at the robart site and they have the 800 series rotating for 8-16 lb planes, but I cant find a distributor. Im guessing they are just off the line or not in production yet? Thanks for the help B

Could someone give me some painting advice
I've done a fair amount of airbrushing over the past year or two, but mostly glossy single color auto finishes or lexan car bodies where no wet sanding or compounding is required. Im getting ready to paint a jet military style color schemes and im not sure how to break it down and in which steps to paint. The plane im painting is an F-14 made from fiberglass. Im doing the traditional gull gray topside, white underbelly, white control surfaces with bare metal leading edges, black canopy walkway and panel lines. What steps should I take when laying on the different colors? Do I still need to wet sand and compound/polish flat finishes? also what is a good way to produce weathering effects? Thanks, bug

Need some help sizing retracts...
Hey guys, Im looking for some advice on picking the right retracts, and finding the right retracts for my next rc jet project. I am doing an EDF F-14. It is 56" long 58" wingspan and will be running 2 90mm EDF on 8 cell lipos. Im estimating the RTF weight to be 10-15lbs. Where can I find a decent set of retracts to handle this weight, has oleos, nose wheel brake (or two nose wheels if I were shooting for scale) Problem is I never built retracts into any of my planes untill now. Ive flown and built jets that have all been bungee launch or 23% 3D gassers with fixed gear. I'm not really sure how to size a set of retracts not to mention incorporating gear door mechanisms into it. Im also unsure how many degrees of retract I need, 75, 90, 105.... isnt helping me make a decision :) Any advice in this area is greatly appreciated, once I can find the right retracts I can dig into my build. Thanks for all the info. Has anyone actually had this model? If so did anyone relocate the gas tank or leave it up past the wing spar? I see that being a problem since when it is full it will make me pretty nose heavy and need to be almost completely empty to have my cg right on. Moving it back tward the center of gravity will make it difficult to install the main wing bolts.

Cap 232G 27% problems on landing...
Im not really sure if this is called ballooning but i'll try my best to describe what is going on. I just finished a CAP 232G by hangar 9 and maidened it today. Whenever I come in for a landing and get to a good speed the plane noses up and climbs slightly and then wants to stall. The pattern is like a U shape. It seems to fly ok in the air but I am not sure why the problems on landing. I never experienced this before. I balanced it at the recommended 7" back on an empty tank and still had to add a little bit of nose weight. Id like to straighten out the problem since this condition has lead to 2 hard landings and im sure a wreck in the future if it continues. Thanks B

I'll have to check out that fan. I hope its capable of 40-50k rpm though. Origionally I was going to just go with the schubs but with changes to the power system it will get extremely pricey and delay assembly to use them at about 300 a piece. I still may use them depending on the quality of the e-turbax I have still not made up my mind as far as batteries. 10S 5000s would get me a good amount over 3000W per fan but then that brings the motor selection into account. I dont think the 1515 can handle that. Ideally id like to have 3000 w per fan but 2000 a piece will still be more than enough. I'll go check out some other alternatives. Thanks for the info
