RE: Europa S Pro
got the new zippy 5000 packs today. very pleased that they all arrived in tact. battery weights as follows Old Flight power f3a packs 1200g new Flight power f3a packs 1150g Zippy 5000 25c backs 1240g with all the wires. i do think that cutting the extra wire and loosing the connectors will be another 20-30 grams less with the guage we have on the port packs. weight is not an issue for this model any way but i will have an issue with the cg is the backs are overly heavy. thinking of swaping for a carbon prop to counter this though. alex

RE: Europa S Pro
well i finaly maidened her. the all up weight is 3580g which is pretty good cos can use any batteries. the flight charecteristics were pretty good, compared to the old plane it sits more solid in the air and has much more rudder authority. stall turns are easy at low throws and integrations require half the rudder throw the previous version does. snaps are alot better due to the bigger ailerons and reduced wing area. despite the higher wing loading the plane feel very light in the air. it is strange to notice that the knife edge coupling is to the canopy, but this can be a result of forward CG. upline and down lines also pulled to the canopy which is a good thing and improving one will inprove all of them. couldnt roll straight because i was giving too much rudder where it was not needed and def need to adjust the diff as have a top hinged aileron. was testing the plane with all surfaces at 0 so should be able to able to fix most tendancies with positive wing and down thrust as well as manipulating the cg. over all i am a happy camper. alex

Najary, Sorry couldnt give you feed back timely but Better late then never. Basicly all he did is bash to full throttle and as the prop spooled up, the reaction twisted the nose off and the motor flew forward about 20 meters he reinforced it just like you did and now is a happy camper. seems you are set to go. good luck Alex

RE: Electric ZN Line Xigris C2 Build Thread
Is the nose rigid enough to withstand the torque of the q80 ? A friend of mine switched to a Q80 on a plane which was intially designed for a C50, the torque was so much greater that the motor twiested the entire nose of the model. would hate to see same happen to your superb plane, so pls take this experience into consideration. Today i am almost done, weight the plane and made a pesemistic weight calculation. all up weight should be about 4850g with zippy 5000. didnt focus wight saving just used what i had with good results. with a tiny bit of effort beive that you can run a Q80 and have all up weight under 4900.

Europa S Pro
Hi all, Just got my newest Europa S Pro electric version in Candy colours. This plane is designed to accept both EP or GP power. As you can see in the EP verions the fire wall is missing to allow air through the air ducts. the trailing edge if flat, with the wing slightly narrower at the root and the tip than the previous version for better snaps. The fuse is wider and the canopy more forward for easier battery access. this plane can accomodate both the C50 setup (stock) or the now popular Q80 with additional nose reinforcement. I will use the C50 13xl, Jeti Spin 99, Futaba servos, 21x13W prop. nothing special but hope you guys like it

RE: Practice question, how to improve by yourself
Its not really about the plane flying straight, which does help ofcourse, its the pilot who is at the sticks. you may be surprised when you get a "straight" plane but it just doesn't give you the boost you were expecting. i don't know the whole story, and may misjudge slightly. but your performance at a competition determines what you need to practice, be cause it puts you under stress and the weak links always break under these circumstances. If you ask me the best way to determine where you are going wrong with your flying it so get comments from judges and fellow competitors and that is really regardless of whether your practice with a caller or w/o one. some one may say your plane is actually not that bad its the setup... or your wings are never level and thats why the upline is always off... or you are giving aileron input together with elevator and thats why your loops are corkscrewed. just my 2 cents

RE: What is the real story from Portugal?
feel a little sour about my post being deleted... feel that CPLR was on top and am sure the more than 50% of the pilots would agree with me. BPLR second, well dunno but he is a great pilot, if any one was in romilly this year they will agree. we often see new pilots who do really well from the first international contest, maybe they are doing something right, means everyone else can as well provided they fly well and know what else is neccessary. more shade, less dust is the way to do it in 2011, sure the Americans will do a great job with that.

RE: trimming observations
IFLY PATTERN - chaning one ... or changing both depends on what you want to acheive. my goal is not to make the plane fly without inputs in level flight.. what i am proposing is trimming the model in such a way where it will fly in the same manner in all flight attitudes. i curently hold up elevator in both up right and invert flight as Renegade said. This is like chaning the stab incedence constantly in flight, applying the necesary angle only when required, up elevator is like neg, incidence which gives the necesary aoa to make the plane fly straight, and reducing it as u let go of the elevator on downlines where it is a handicap making the plane pull to the canopy. using negative stab incidence requires more down elevator mix. effectivly if you have negative stab incedence, positive wing and down thrust the thrust angle cancels the stab incedence, at the same time all these incidences create more drag that if everything was 0-0-0 which results in extra posistive wing to fight drag and create lift. also such a setup on downlines has 2 forces, positive wing and negative stab forcing the palne to pitch up and only down thrust pushing the other way. resulting in more down elevator mix. if you remove down thrust the plane would constantly want to pitch up in level flight since there is already positive wing incidence creating lift and you just have neg. stab pitching the plane up. however if you remove both neg elevator and down thrust the plane will definilty fly with out elevator input in level flight and will pitch up on downlines, the amount of required down elevator mix will probably be the same..... so why all the different incedences? completely agree that if i move the cg further back is will affect the amount of elevator input required for level flight. but unfortunatly as soon as i do that i have issues with snaps. they become uber lazy

RE: trimming observations
what you are saying is, not the cg affect the up and down line but rather the resulting elevator incidence.however if you leave all incidences alone the cg does little to alter the flight path on up and down lines... well at least on my model which always requires up elevator in upright flight to fly level. if i adjust the incidences for level flight then i get more pitching up on both up and down lines.

RE: trimming observations
tuny - for the differing rudder inputs on different rudder knife edge flights. you can easily test that this is true by doing a knife edge loop in different directions. you will see that u need a lot more left rudder to compensate for the right thrust. mjfredrick - yes i disregarded the cg because i didn't see its affect on uplines or downlines. i agree that it does have some effect in knife edge flight. as far as the cg on my plane goes its super forward about 30% of mac. i am not questioning any one elses setup, i have come to realize that there are a million ways in which you can setup the plane. what i am proposing offers the least alterrations of angles from the flight pass with the same results. i beleive you when u say that your plane does straight up and down lines with no mixes. however how sure are u that your setup doesnt affect the axiality of your rolls. i am also sure you can do straight rolls, but i beleive its not the plane which rolls straight but rather your fingers to the right things to make it roll staight... just a thought

During this time i have given a lot of thought to what affects what during the setup process and made a few observations. These observations have little to do with aerodynamics, just purely practical things. In this post i don’t want to judge any ones trimming methods instead i would like to receive some feedback from more experienced pilots, so here we go... My main observation was that there is only one flight attitude in which one cannot use their fancy radio to mix out pitching tendencies. This attitude is very obviously up the vertical up line. Hence i believe that this the flight attitude for which the airplane should be set up mechanically. Of course there are many ways to do this. One could simply use the elevator trim or alter the incidence of the stab or wing. During the Greek nats i was discussing trimming issues this Elias( builder of the nutrino) he proposed an interesting though which had never occurred to me before, "the stab always wants to fly at 0 degrees incidence to the flight path". This theory can of course be questioned as the wing is the major generator of lift and determines the flight path. however if you think about it when the wing is happy with the angle of attack during upright flight the stab incidence is 0 degrees to the flight pass. Considering that the wing is actually flying both on vertical and down lines it tries to generate lift hence changing its angle of attack to a "positive value" of course during upright flight it’s hard to determine which side should be considered as positive incidence. a few sleepless night made me realize that during up lines, it must the resistance which the rudder creates which forces the wing to always settle for the angle which we normally call positive AOA. Therefore in a 0-0-0 setup we get constant pitching up tendency, because the rudders resistance forces the wing into a positive angle of attack at which point the vector of thrust also changes and starts pulling the plane further towards the canopy. The solution which worked for me in practice is a small amount of positive incidence, 0.2 degrees on my airplane with i guess will very design to design. This positive incidence satisfies all the above mentioned conditions but one. The wing has an angle of attach which allows it to generate lift. And at this angle of attach the stab incidence is 0 degrees to the flight path as well as the vector of thrust if pointing directly up. The only condition not satisfied is the resistance of the rudder which has not gone anywhere. to be honest i have not really figured out where this one goes, but my guess is and that’s a big guess... with the current 0.0.2.0 setup the plane in upright horizontal flight has a tendency to pitch down. This means is that there is not enough lift being generated to keep the plane flight level. Possibly this lack of lift is what counteracts the minuet resistance of the rudder. So we got the plane flying straight up. As far as down lines go, everything is pretty much the same but the plane is pitching up again. Hmmmm what has changed... my observation is that the plane is no longer being pulled in a certain directions since the throttle is at idle, and in the usual case the prop is actually slowing down the plane which destabilizes the flight path. This leads the plane to follow the vector of the wing, which in this unstable state is probably also helped by the rudder resistance. The more angle of attach you have on the wing the stronger the pitching tendency on the down line. Although one might suggest that the resulting “down thrust” should guide the plane straight down. But guess that there is not thrust on the way down. If you add throttle flying down, which i don’t recommend, but for experiments sake have tried it. With the same 0.0.2.0 setup the airplane flies straight up and straight down if you give equal throttle. So i just gave the plane a little down elevator mix which was minor. I saw no other way out as is i mechanically set the plane to fly straight down without mixing, the plane would pitch down on the up line. So we got that sorted Not the knife edge. With the same 0.0.2.0 setup the plane flies a pretty straight knife edge. However i got aihadral on my stab. With more wing incidence i had more down pitching. i have not been able to figure out where the pitching comes from. However what i have been able to determine is why the pitching is stronger on the left rudder knife edge. The simple answer is that you have to use more rudder on left rudder knife edge to counteract the right thrust, more rudder means more coupling. This is why i completely agree with Chip Hyde’s theory that less right thrust is actually better. Since right thrust results in pitching action when applying rudder it does more bad than good. What i mean is that the right thrust makes the plane fly straight up without yawing to the side... great. But it affects rolls, knife edge flight, hence also point rolls, even more so the knife edge loop. From this we can conclude that it affect a total of 2 manoeuvres negatively and only 1 positively. Considering that we have our high tech radio any way, what is better to mix out the result or the source of the problem? We can make 1 complex mix with throttle to rudder. It will make the plane fly straight up and you have less right thrust which eliminates all sorts of funny yaw issues during corners. Apart from that you lose the differing pitching tendencies during rolls, you may say, but the throttle to rudder mix is active. But guess what u are constantly using the rudder when rolling so its not really there unlike the right thrust which would always be pointing in the same direction. Hence with less right thrust you also eliminate the constantly changing thrust vector during the roll. This is pretty much all i have to say for now. If more though will come to my head i will elaborate. Meanwhile please correct me if i am wrong in and of my observations. Regards Alex Syomin Ukraine F3A team
