Mold release removal
I used alcohol to clean the mold release from a fiberglass cowl. After a fairly short time the paint (PPG) seems to be be popping off way too easily. I wondered if all of the mold release came off when I cleaned it. Should I have used something else like acetone or water? Yes, the surface was primed with PPG primer before painting. Thanks in advance.

RE: Anhedral Stab back in the Day?
A well know pattern flyer told me it effectively increased the side area on the tail, which would decrease the "wiggle" or over rotation that follows a hammer head.
ORIGINAL: captinjohn Who is going to buy a 35cc  china built engine for $350 and find out there ia not many airplanes for a odd diplacement engine??
The evolution of our giant planes was driven by the development of a gas power source. Planes were developed to take advantage of those break throughs. Bud Nosen was a visionary, marketing kits that were under powered till the gasers were made avaliable. Radio manufactors also saw the future and developed the necessary equipment to meet the markets needs. Planes will be developed and marketed for any popular new power source.

RE: Glassing
If you use a roll of toilet paper and roll it over the first coat of resin/epoxy it will soak up the excess bonding agent while pressing the cloth to the wood. With each pass the wet paper has to be disposed. No bubbles or high spots in the cloth and no excess fluid left in the cloth. Second coat of resin/epoxy should be cut to make it flow. Use a guid coat of laquor to sand the high spots out.

RE: What kind of RETRACTS are on the market today
ORIGINAL: Dave Harmon Oh yeah....thanks for reminding me....I had a couple of S hooks to go around the gear leg near the tire. The other end hooked to the retract sideplate. To install the hooks after the flying is done I turned the airplane upside down, retracted the gear, installed the hooks, took the wing off and then disconnected the air line. No need to retract the units by hand.
I think this "block" went between the cylinder and the mechanics. The one I saw had a "remove before flight" red streamer attached. Would have been U shaped to clear the push rod coming out of the cylinder. Make sense ?

RE: What kind of RETRACTS are on the market today
ORIGINAL: rgburrill One thing that concerns me about Spring Air is what if you want the gear up for transport?  Is it easy to raise the gear by hand with the air off?
If my memory serves me correctly, there used to be a "up lock" block that would be inserted into the retract mechanics. It kept the gear up for transport. Remembe seeing one, was possibly home made. Old age memory don't help. Shoulden't be too hard to figure out and make.
ORIGINAL: Hokie Flyer BTW, we're having a classic pattern contest over at Eglin in April, the 1040 Blues Classic Pattern Meet.  Even if you can't get a '' true classic pattern ship'' built in time, gtab a Big Stick or Kaos ARF and come on over.  Our field is less than an hour away from you. Rob
Thanks Rob. That clears up a lot of what I diden't know. I was aware of your contest coming up and would love to attend, but I will be on vacation in Europe. I have purchased a Tipo kit and have it in the planning stage. Mazybe next time. Thanks again.
ORIGINAL: impactiq The old planes were to loud.
OK, so now we have gas motors with howling props. They seem to use considerable more airspace and create a greater noise problem. Seems we went too far in the wrong direction, killing what was working to appeize a few. Any thought of this?

How did we get here ?
In the summer of 1962 I saw my first "pattern" contest. They were flying Tauris planes snd using reed radios. I was hooked, but did not have the resources till 1970. Things seemed great with contest everywhere, loads of new planes and options galore. After going through the typical, Kaos, UFO, Super Septors, and Phoenix series, I was forced to give it up due to work around 1985. I left patten just as "turn around" was coming on. Now I am retired and was getting back into pattern. WellI was in for a rude awaking when I tried to purchase a new motor for my new project. All of the patten motors, as I knew it, were no longer made. What happend. Did the turn around planes kill the triditional. What killed that segment of the hobby, and why? [:o][:o][8|]

Are there any RE engines that are still made? Looked at the Rossi web site and none were listed. I have a friend that is interested in building a EU-1A but is concerned about finding a motor for it.

RE: Rules History, EU1-A Pics
ORIGINAL: WEDJ Larger planes fly better.  But, because of it's size and weight, the EU1a needed a really honkin' engine to perform well.
There was a member (Loyd Nicholson) of the Mile Hi club in Denver that built one, but could not get any decent performance at 5000 feet. I often wonder how it perfromed at sea level.

Motor mount ??
Years ago I used a metal motor mount for Rossi engines. They were cast from an alloy and could be drilled and taped. If my old memory serves me correctly it was made by CBor something like that. Anyone know if they are still avaliable ?

RE: Rossi engine
ORIGINAL: Jim Oliver The small case (.46 size, according to Dub) has a shorter crank throw, which means less torque, which limits the small case engine to lighter props (less prop load) than the big block engines. That said, there are some of the smaller, lighter Classic pattern models than can use the small case 60 very well. The original Kaos, Super Fli and others of that size and weight are better powered with the small case 60 than the much heavier big block 60. Be aware that an 11x7 prop is a heavy load for those engines. Years ago, folks trimmed props to 10 1/2 dia. and maybe slightly shorter, to get the rpm & flying speed desired, when using the early smaller, lighter 60 size engines. Just match the engine to the airframe and all will be OK.[:D] Jim
Thought that may be the case. Looks like Rossi is in my future (again). Thanks for the reply.

RE: Rossi engine
ORIGINAL: Jim Oliver Dub isn't making any more big case .60s, if I correctly understood my conversation with him. If this is correct, you may be locked into the Rossi anyway (not really a bad thing, IMO).
Just spoke with Dub and you are correct. He is making the 60 in the samll case only. So my question is, what is the advantage for the block (case) size that would make the Rossi the only choice?

Orderd a boar from BH for my grandson. After two weeks they switch the item to a another simular item. I requested a cancellation (on line). Never heard a reply. Even called several timesno reply. Cancelled the credit card transaction, then they replied. Peronally, I would not buy a used lawn mower from themor anything else. Poor customer service.
