RE: Painting Solartex fabric
I've been using Solartex and the other "tex" type materials for the past 30 years plus - it is my covering of choice, whilst fuel may not go through to the wood, the black oil residu from the engine stains the material and it loses its look. If you seal it, it stays nice. In the last 10 years I have covered 1 3rd scale Cub, 1 3rd scale Tiger Moth, 1 3rd scale Piper Arrow II, 1 Fly Baby, 1 Xtra 300s, 1 Stadaucher, 1 3rd Scale Gee Bee Model Y, I 3m Nietoperz, 1 Proctor Parasol, 5 x 1.8m - 2m wing Stiks, 1 Cloud Dancer with Solartex and Oratex, just to name a few... If you want to keep the plane looking sharp, you have to seal it from the outside. If not, even the seems will peel. Cheers Bundu

RE: Painting Solartex fabric
I use automotive K2 (2 part ) spray paint. Just a heads up. Solartex, just as all the other "tex" type coverings are not fuel proof and will get dirty and scruffy quickly if not sealed - especially underside of fuse etc. I use automotive K2 ( 2 part) clearcoat, thin it down and spray the whole plane with it - minimal weight increase as the thinners evaporates off and the clearcote seals the fabric - then you can paint your stripes etc on it without the paint running into the fabric, This way you get nice sharp lines and having the whole plane sealed, it will be good for many years. Some of my planes are 10 years plus old and still in mint condition. The K2 clearcoat seals and strengthen the covering. Cheers Bundu

RE: Gyro on elevator
Some GEE BEEY R1 pilots use a gyro to assist stability but that is because of the short tail....... oh, and some very naughty 3D pilots also uses gyros to prop hang (you have not heard it from me....) As per the other gentlemen responses - consider reducing the Low rate probably by 40% as compared to high rate (or the movement you have now) - I have seen a number of planes this year that was very difficult to fly and when they reduce the elevator and aileron movement - in one case of a Cessna by 55% for low range, it became a sweet flying plane. Take off and land on low rates and do upper airwork on high rates. Having everything on high rate for landing and take off does not make you necessarily a better pilot, reducing the rates makes it a nicer plane to fly. Save yourself $11 and possibly a plane... Gyros, if not installed correctly, can be a high tech way of crashing a plane..... Cheers Bundu
ORIGINAL: gwweber I have been chased a few times by birds while flying my plane, but this one was personal. Was Landing my new 50cc PAU on a pretty windy day and all the sudden this pair of birds attack me. I mean, in my face trying to get my eyes etc. I had walked to the end of the field as it was windy and wanted a bit if extra room and i was attacked. Almost wrecked my plane into the restraining fence but got it on the runway with a small scuff on the wing tip. It was actually funny cause these were small birds and I am over 6 foot tall. Hmm I guess they won this one! NOTE TO SELF While it is bad to chase birds with you planes-you may get lucky! It wasnt 20 mins later hes screaming "IVE LOST IT! IVE LOST IT! I DONT HAVE CONTROL OF IT! I wasnt flying and all I could do was watch it go over and past the treeline some 3-4 hundred yards away. The look on his face was priceless and all I could think about was " Its a lipo its good all day" I so badlly wanted to say I told you so! You charge 3 times the price of the original kit, Some nut buys it - you go around collecting crashed planes and sell it off, makes millions, retiring a rich man that have his own tropical island and flying planes from it.... and all it took was a little niche marketing..... Looking at the way this plane went in, there must be a bulge on the other side of the planet of the impact zone...... Cheers Bundu

RE: 110 v charger on 220 v outlet !
Sam, your 500 W 220 to 110 V is more than enough for the charger that you have now. I was referring to when you are looking at getting another "wall charger" which is 220 V already - ask for the highest capacity charger as some are only 50 mAh and some is as high as 180 mAh. The 180mAh one will charge bigger batteries I.e. 1400 mAh better. Try rotor hobbies.in in Chenai. The have a large range of RC stuff and their prices are good. They stock JR / Spektrum. I have bought a lot of stuff from them in the past when I was transferred to Mumbai. I'm now in Basra. Cheers Bundu

RE: Lost a plane today
Hi, You should buy a lottery ticket for you are lucky to not have crashed. Spektrum recommends that you go to 6V - they do not recommend 4.8V as the voltage is too low for the 2.4 gHz system - check out their tech website. The 4.8 V nicad voltage pack goes back at least 40 years to a time that rechargeable batteries was nicads and that happened to be their voltage. ....and nothing changed for about 40 + years. With planes getting bigger, faster, the electronic gear manufacturers are using the massive leaps in battery technology to produce higher performance electronics - transmitters, recievers, servos. Check the specs of all quality servo's and you will see they give a performance spec for 6V as well. I also used 4.8 v nicad packs from the 1970's onwards - lost many planes (black death etc), it was only when I switched to 9.9 V LiFe PO4 packs for transmitters and 6.6 V receivers that I realized how technology have developed. About 2 months ago I forgot my 9.9 V LiFe PO4 powered (2100 mA battery) Spektrum transmitter on. I discovored it 32 hours later - still switched on and was reading 8.9 V. I charged it up and was ready again. If you leave a 9.6 V nicad powered Tx on for 4 hours, the batteries will be dead. Same goes for the Rx packs. The 2.4 gHz receivers needs a higher voltage to perform better. As I mentioned, I've been to a number of hobbyshops that don't stock nicads or NMH batteries anymore - they are toxic to environment, is much heavier, is totally outperformed by the LiFE and Lipo techologies, and is slightlly more expensive than the LiFE PO4 packs. So why pay more for a heavier, toxic and less performing battery that causes black death problems?... See attached the comparisson I made of the packs I have, Some of the really high end large plane servos can operate at 11 - 12 V Cheers Bundu

RE: 110 v charger on 220 v outlet !
Hi Sam, At the moment I'm just accross the border from you . You should not have a problem with the transformer - I have used it too for years untill I switched to LiFE PO4 batteries for all my gear. Just make sure you get one that is rated around 180 mA. Some chargers are only rated 50 mA and they take forever to charge a nicad pack, However, the JR 220 - 240 charger is not expensive, so if you are not comfortable, just get one, they are only a few bucks each. Get it from Dubai or India - I use to buy from some hobby shops in India - they can ship it. Best is to flash some cash and get a programmable charger - you won't look back. Cheers Bundu

RE: Lost a plane today
ORIGINAL: Mpizpilot Futaba 3003's and just a 4.8v nimh pack. Nothing crazy in this plane, no binding on linkages.
For 2.4 gHz you cannot use 4.8 Volt receiver packs - it needs to be 6V packs. (nicad or even 6.6V for LiFE PO4 packs). I use the 6.6 V packs very successfully - never had a problem on any of my 13 JR 2.4 gHz receivers using 6 or 6.6V. If you don't want to go to 6 or 6.6 V, don't use the your present system - The voltage drop will get you on 4.8V nicad pack. Also, nicads and NMH packs are "last century technology". Many hobby shops are not even selling them anymore. The new standard is 6V , even 6.6V soon. All quality servos are designed to take 6 V or 6.6 V . You get much better servo performance with 6 or 6.6V. Word of caution - do not use el cheapo servos - mostly Chinese origin servos with 6 V - they may not handle it. All high quality branded servo's comes with performance specs for 4.8 and 6.0 V. Just a heads up. Cheers Bundu
Sounds almost like you guys are discussing politicians here...... Reading through this thread I see a number of people had good results and a number of people question the quality of some rolls. To me it appears that this might be a quality consistency problem - maybe MK get their rolls from different suppliers/manufacturers, or the rolls are old and the glue have deteriorated - Personally I don't like to risk messing up a plane where there is a chance the stuff wont work properly - even a 20% chance - fortunately we have other brands and I prefer to purchase H9 or Oracover which I know have given me consistent good quality results for many years on many planes. I've got one too, had to rework the landing gear - very flimsy and thrown out the spoilers and the central spoiler deploying mechanism - placed a servo in it's place with a " hook in" mechanism. RE: Flaperons?
Flaperons may have some applications - but it is a handsome high tech method of crashing a plane I very embarressingly crashed a Cessna Centurion of all planes this way - testing flaperons. You are bound to stall one half of the wing if you have to use the ailerons. I do cheat sometimes when landing my 3rd scale Super Cub by feeding in a tiny bit of spoilerons on final approach to wash off height and speed, but that is a different story - Cubs are almost immune to gravity.. If you take a well balanced, plane - say, an Ugly STIK and you intentionally enlarge the tailplane double the size as follows: 1. Making it wider - i.e. longer parallel with the main wing, re-balance it - how will it fly? (take offs, stalls, landings, rolls etc.?) 2. Using the same plane, but this time keeping the width as it originally was, but making the tailplane longer in respect to the fuselage and re-balance it - how will it fly?
