RE: Lofting-3 view drawings
try using AutoCAD Inventor Professional Suite 2010, it includes AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, plus its an almost $8000 program free to anyone that has a .edu email address. students.autodesk.com has all the info plus tons of tutorials on it. You get the educational version which is completely full featured, only thing different is it prints an "Produced by an Autodesk Educational Product" watermark around the outside of all drawings.

RE: Designing 1/2a CL, need input
yea i believe i will go the route of doing a flight or two with the texaco then switching to the black widow, and at the time of the design i did not know how i wanted to go with the TE design so i just put in 1/4" square stock to complete the wing, however i have started building as of tonight and have a TE on it more like the one in your example

RE: Designing 1/2a CL, need input
ok great, i have tons of 1/16. ill try weighing everything first then see if i need to go lighter. but i was definitely going to sheet the rear of the wing by the taper, but i think ill put at leas one full sheet on it before i switch to rear only

RE: Designing 1/2a CL, need input
i have a black widow sitting around here thats itching to go on something, but i think ill start out with the texaco. since its my first build i dont want to crash her on the first flight, but as i get more comftorable ill probably switch them out. i know i need to sheet the center ribs of the wing, but how thick should the sheeting be and how far out would you recommend i go?

RE: Designing 1/2a CL, need input
i have a real nice running cox 049 texaco, and as far as the size, i redesigned it to have a 28" wing and took your advise and make the nose longer, measure once cut twice right. but if the motor im using doesnt work i might throw a .10 onto it

Designing 1/2a CL, need input
So this is my first scratch design and build. Going with a 1/2a, 30" built up wing with 2" taper. i have attached a 3D mock up. let me know what you think or what you would add kyle

RE: First Scratch Design and Build
yea the taper is just for looks and you are correct about just not having the sheeting shown, i plan on changing it over to rc once i build up the CL and fly it, in the case that something goes wrong design wise i feel better crashing it while its not full of electronics

First Scratch Design and Build
Well im new to this site so i figured i would post here and see what you guys think. For my first attempt at designing and building a plane from scratch i decided to build a 1/2a CL plane with a 30" built up wing. I attached my tenative design, let me know what you think or if you think anything should be changed. And im looking for a name for her, so any ideas

RE: Need some help
well hopefully this one wont be too heavy, but we'll see after i build it, if it is i guess ill just have to go bigger with the engine. but i have attached a picture of where she stands so far... now i just need to find her a name and one other thing, whats the best material to cover the wing with?

RE: Tips And Tricks for CAD Programs.
I dont know how many of you are students or have a .edu email address, but Autodesk has educational versions of all their software available free to all students. Only difference is it places an educational version watermark around outside borders of all printed drawings. I just downloaded the AutoCAD Inventor 2010 Professional Suite in about 4 hours (large file). First attempt at Inventor didnt turn out too bad. All software has tutorials to learn everything.

thanks for all the replies, would a wing with some dihedral and a wider center than tips really affect a 049 CL plane?
