Stuka I'll make sure I inform her of the warbird requirements. Jester, I've never thrown myself off the side of the cliff, but I have run off. The first time is a real clencher if you get my drift. Yes I do have keeper.

My wife doesn't know the can of worms she is opening!
I'll be 37 in a week. Just so if you were wondering about that. You can send me something if you want....... I opened my e-mail this morning to find a message from Tower Hobbies. Mind you, in 2005 I had just finished building a 50cc Yak. Outfitted with a DA50 and all the bells and whistles. I spared no expense on my first giant scale plane. I even bought a new radio for it. I was in hog heaven. It was lite, powerfull, just absolutely beautifull. It was the ultimate plane for me at the time. (Even if it JUST fit into my Nissan Sentra.) Well I took my time, built the plane, loaded it up with all the goodies, and flew it about 8 times. Out of the blue I took my dad out for an aerial adventure in the form of hang gliding. Little did I know the impact it would have on my life. The next weekend and every weekend after than for about 6 months I was hang gliding. I eventually sold off all the RC gear I had, that was worth anything, to pay for the equipment I needed for hang gliding. The Yak was gone without a second thought. I kept an old Futaba radio, and a couple flyable gliders. Not to mention the stable of broken planes, and a couple boxes of misc junk support and building equipment. So I skim past the Tower e-mail thinking it just more spam in my inbox. I read the e-mails I'm interested in and click the check boxes to delete all of the messages. I again catch the name Tower Hobbies. I glance at the message title and it is politely thanking me for my recent order. Huh? What is this, I haven't ordered anything from Tower. I open the link and behold a Great Plane Ultiamte Bipe has been placed on order. Wait...that is not my name, that is my wife's name. Oh crap I don't think I'm supposed to see this. This is my birthday present, it has to be! Wait why did it come to my e-mail? I decide to log on to Tower and see if an order was placed under my account. Thankfully I haven't stopped using the same e-mail and password for most of my accounts online :) Sure enough, she bought it under my account and did not change the e-mail. Oh good heavens my next move was RCU, and digging up old build threads. Searching for engines, radios, glues, sand paper, filler, coverings, jigs, this that, Oh good lord I'm going to have to spend a small fortune! I'll be 37 in a week, and I'm as excited as a 6 year old who gets to have his birthday at Chucky Cheese! (seriously, if you want to send me something, make it building supplies [:D])

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Looking good! The SSE was the funnest plane I've ever owned. I had an Irvine .53 in mine and it was perfect. Wouldn't rocket out of a hover, but it would hover. It built so fast I felt guilty and spent a lot of time covering it. The Irvine was red, so I picked a red color scheme, and dyed the canopy to give it a red smoked look. Since I like large contrast on the top vs the bottom, I went with a green bottom. (sister product [:D]) These are the only pics I have, the covering still had a little bit of finish work required. You should have a blast with this plane, and thanks for the thread! I'm just starting to return to RC after selling most of my stuff to buy my hang glider in 2005 :) [image]http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/34325/78857_13495.jpg[/image] [image]http://images.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/34325/71279_13495.jpg[/image]

RE: What is your favorite brand radio and why?
I started with Futaba back in the mid 80's. Had Futaba all the way up until I bought my first computer radio. I bought a Hitec eclipse 7 in 2004. Had that for about 4 months and picked up the JR9303. The JR felt much like my old trusty Futaba Skysport 6 I had for 10 years or so. I also liked the programing, or ease of programing. If I were to buy another, it would be another JR 9303. It's more the feeling in my hands then anything else telling me what to get. It's just a comfortable fit.

RE: Stupidity leads to aircraft crash
Stupidity has crashed more planes than most other reasons combined. Be it while flying, building, learning, teaching, charging, cleaning, loading/unloading etc...etc... I know every one of my crashes (and there have been multiple) have been from stupidity. Once I forgot to put a servo screw in.... Duhh Once I was flying low inverted passes with an un reliable motor, deadstick, panic, stall, smack! Multiple stupidity in one go....... Pulled out of an inverted spin 1/2 rotation to low. Not reinforcing the center section of a wing. Dramatic lawn dart end to that one. Pulled out of a dive into a harrier about 4' to low. Letting my wife "fly" my slow stick. (She has no hand eye coordination I know that! Hand launched a little electric "Cessna" at the exact moment I realized I didn't have enoug room to land it. Didn't think I needed to recharge, managed 1 1/2 more flights. 4 Point roll inches above the beanfield, tall weed caught the stab = Splat. I could go on and on, bt i think my point is clear. [:D]

RE: Am I crazy to fly this?
I say do it! If you are well aware you might be in for more than you can handle. Build it, fly it, crash it, and build it again, nothing wrong with that. Keep the throws low, and try to stay out of the throttle, and these things are cake to fly. (Of course I've been flying for many years and control is reflex, not conscious thinking) Couple warnings. Make sure there is no one around to run the plane into. Taking a plane home in a bag is one thing. Sending someone to the hospital for stitches is another, and unacceptable outcome. This hobby is about having fun! Be safe and courteous to others, but have fun your way!

Im suprised a thermal would do that. Overspeed/stressed trying to escape a strong thermall I could understand, but actually hitting a thermall strong enough to damage the glider [X(] And how does lifting air damage a vertical surface?

RE: Ok...Lets hear some funny crash stories...
I had taught my buddy to fly his Nexstar. He was fine in the air, but landing threw him for a loop. Actually just scared him so he always landed WAY out in the field. I finally convinced him he needed to land closer. So he comes in closer, for a low pass, just to get use to flying in closer to himself. As he passes by he hit the throtle and the engine sags, coughs and he panicks. He burps the throttle a few times then decided to land it. Everything was fine, but the slight drift carried him towards a tree. One small tree with a trunk that was about 3-4" in diameter. I don't know if his aim was off, or perfect. He kissed the tree, right in the center of the trunk, with the crank. Instead of ripping his wing into pieces, he knocked the firewall loose. Had he been 1/2" either way I think it would have shanked off and the wing and tail would have been toast.

RE: Sweetest sound you ever heard
The quiet after the tug drops to idle and you are left alone. What is even better is the sound of the wind when you get to 6000'. Better even still is the sound (kind of a a chorus of whistles) you get from flying a hang glider really fast. An air show crowd cheering for you after a demonstration flight.

RE: the simple flying pleasure of a 2M R/E glider
I learned on gliders, they are so much fun. After I moved out on my own I got into powered planes and did not have a glider for 10+ years. I bought a H9 Aspire and have put hundreds of hours on the air frame. It is beat up and raggedy, but it is so much fun. Now that my main passion is hang gliding, it's fun to take my glider along for early morning, and evening flights.

Depends on the plane I'm flying. Mainly if I can make decent progress into the wind, I'll fly. I've also been known to fly in the rain, snow, fog, and as the field floods. [:D]

Most of the "good" second planes come in .40 , .60, and even some in 1.20 size. Goldberg Tiger Comes in all three sizes. (my first pick) Sig's 4 Star comes in .40 and .60 size Great Planes Supersportster comes the 3 sizes. Of course you can get a Stick in each size too.

RE: Suggestions please...
Good old standards. GoldbergTiger II Sig Something Extra Sig 4* GP Super Sportster Goldberg Skylark And the not so old standards GP Rapture Pheonix Models Dolphin Any Stick type plane (though not low wing) Most of these models are rated up to .46 or so, but adding a 50 will not make them "fast and furious". They will nearly all slow down as slow as you want them to. My top pick would be the Tiger II, 4*. then teh GP Supersportster.

RE: wing tip fix
You could use a good clear packing tape, or you could buy some colored trim tape ( http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDMX1&P=7 ) Goldberg is the most readily available stuff here. Anykind you get you will want to make sure the area you put it down is free of ALL residue, and dry from any cleaning liquid used. The tape will stick good and tight, but it has to be clean first.

RE: wing tip fix
You could take them off and epoxy them on. Just rough up the inside of the wind tip first, and make sure you glue them to wood and not covering. Or you could re-tape them. Or you could take them off and cover the now exposed wing tip with covering. That is part of the beauty of these things. You can do just about anything you want to!

RE: Lack of growth
Hang gliding is in the same state of decline. Para gliding, with it's easy to carry equipment has surpassed the ol' aluminum and dacron hang glider. Who wants a roof rack when you can toss your glider in the boot of your car? My hang glider weighs in at 60 lbs. Paragliders tip the scales at maybe 30 lbs. Now throw in the fact you can get a power pack and no longer need a mountain and powered paragliding is rapidly growing. No one wants to run up and down hills all day in the hot sun to learn to hang glide. No one wants to spend hours on the hill only to pack up and go home because the winds are to strong (or to light). Oh by the way, I'm in the above mentioned generation[&o], but i don't think i fit the above mention stereotype.

RE: Bending out a piece of plywood?
Get some cheap paneling or backsplash (backsplash made with masonite works best) from your nearest home improvement store. (Lowes or Home Depot etc.etc.) Should be able to pick up a couple busted pcs for next to nothing. Use 2 sheets of this instead of the plywood. Put one sheet down and secure it. Put the other down on top and secure it. Now you have a nice smooth strong surface. If you find the surface is to smooth, pick up some traction tape (gritty tape for stair steps and stuff)
