RE: Mega earthquake in Japan
It doesn't look good from what is shown on TV here. There may be problems with a burning nuclear power station and the tsunami alert has been extended to Hawaii, Alaska and the US west coast. My thoughts are with the people suffering. It's amazing that you didn't feel a thing down south where you are, Abu. Glad to hear that you're ok.

Mega earthquake in Japan
The pictures on the news programmes show what's probably been the worst earthquake in Japan ever. With the images of Christchurch still fresh in our minds I'm sure we're all hoping that casualties are kept to a minimum, although that might be very unlikey by what we're seeing. Thanks to Google earth I know that you are well away from the northeast, but still I hope you are doing ok, Abu.

I'd like to know how you're doing, mate. Give us an update. According to the news the worst is over for Queensland, so I hope you're ok.

Yeah, I had just posted those images, when I realized that the cylinders are totally different. [link=http://www.thomasgenth.de/html/albatros_c_i.html]This[/link] website says the Albatros CI in Kracow (sp?) has a 150hp Benz III.

This is what was described in Flight as a 230 HP Benz Engine. It looks like what's labelled at 200 hp Benz on the Arizona page. Is this what later became known as a Benz IV?

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
Don, I have the huge Jane's Fighting Aircraft of World War 1 which is basically a reprint of several Flight articles, which also has a lot on the Benz 230 HP Engine including scale (dimensioned!) drawings. I'm not sure if this is the one you're looking at, but at a quick glance it seems to be the same. The cylinders were certainly NOT offset. I have a big presentation this afternoon, so can't scan the drawings for you right now, maybe later this eveninig. Chris

Haha, one way worked, the other way didn't. I'm not going to spend the rest of the evening testing both ways, just to see if they work or not. Maybe there is a glitch in the old way that they don't want to fix because this feature will be discontinued soon anyway. Dir auch ein schönes neues Jahr, Tom [:D]

RE: CD-ScaleDesigns SE 5a
Greg, the model car guys use very small screws. You can search that large online auction house for Pocher. There's a guy in the UK that sells screws for Pocher model builders, but he doesn't seem to have any listed right now. Apart from that I found this here [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/Nickel-Plated-Brass-Simulated-Hex-Bolt-Pocher-Models-/370426795940?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item563f2857a4]nickel plated hex bolts[/link]

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
Looks good, Don. For the radiator panels you could check if there's a rectangular Evergreen profile that fits. You could glue them together staggered and add the raised chanels with white glue or something. Evergreen has plastic materials in all sorts and sized, plus it would be hollow from the inside, which would give you that head on look you are looking for.

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
As I see it there's more than just stacking pieces of balsa. It looks like the sides panels have vertical raised lines. They remind me a lot of rib tapes. How would you go about replicating these? I think I would try running beads of white glue glue along the assembled slab sections. Would that be experiment 4?

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
Don, there was an excellent article in one of the Windsock International Magazines, many years ago, written by Harry Woodman. It also came with scale details and drawings. Maybe you can find it somewhere. IIRC the radiator slabs where made of lengths of square brass pieces, welded together as if they were standing on their tips, if you get what I mean. It certainly wasn't a mesh like on the picture in your last post.

[quote]ORIGINAL: abufletcher And guesses on the function of that metal strap? Or anyone out there think the ''ply part'' was really made of metal sheeting also...in which case, why the metal strap over the metal sheet? [/quote] Maybe fpr protection. The gun was fitted to some kind of a lever with which the gunner could change the elevation of the gun for those difficult angles. Maybe the skirt prevents damage when this lever scrapes across the top decking in action.
