ORIGINAL: scale only 4 me So you busted the budget big time,, guess you're liking flying again [;)]
Hehe... yeah, you might say that :) Although, the $750-$1000 was just the budget "at that moment in time" to get me up and "flying" again. I figured I'd go berserk once I got hooked again real good ...and yeah, I kinda did :D

RE: Getting back into RC. Electric ARF recommendations?
Zippi, I never did come back and thank you for getting 'Extreme Flight' on my radar. I was having connection issues with RCU at the time, and more or less stopped reading. I ended up knocking the rust off with a Parkzone T28, then some 'other brand' planes, but ended with with Extreme Flight in the end. Heck, a whole fleet of them, these days. LOL! I either have... or have had: 48" Extra EXP (x2) 48" Edge EXP 48" Laser Chinn Yak ARF 78" Extra 300 88" Edge 91" Yak (proto that was flown on DA60. I have it electrified now) Love them all! Right now, I'm salvating for the green and black 60" MXS. Maybe sometime soon. But yeah, EF and crew are great, and 'just up the road' from me which is awesome. Anyhow... I just remembered this post, and wanted to come back and say thanks :D
ORIGINAL: FallDownGoBoom Take a look at the new 3DHobbyshop 47'' Osiris. Pattern type flyer, from a good outfit. Wingspan is right, it'll be aerobatic, and should fit your budget, as long as you don't need to by a new radio. http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/47-Osiris-RED_p_15883.html
Hey, that does look pretty sweet, though it leaves me with pretty much the same situation as converting any of my nitros. I'm kindof hoping to find a combo deal that includes all the hardware, the motor, esc, servos, etc. (Or options to add them at order time) And... it's not "in" yet. What is it with these places and their stock, these days? Seems like every plane I show any interest in is either "coming soon" or "on the boat" or just hopelessly backordered ;) Hmm... there was also a Velox Revolution on that page that looks pretty sweet, as well. but it's "out of stock" too. Thanks for the idea, though. It's on the list :-)

Getting back into RC. Electric ARF recommendations?
Wow. Been forever, since I've posted here, it seems. Anyhow, after a several years long break, I'm getting the RC flying bug again. Badly. I still have a bunch of older planes, radios and engines, but am wanting to go with a quick fresh start to get back into it. I'll dig into my dungeon later, and get about the business of replacing batteries and such, I suppose. Until then, I want something to FLY! Anyone have any recommendations for a good electric ARF? Any good combo deals out there? Here are the parameters I'm trying to work within, though they're not set in stone: Budget: <=$750-ish, all in. Might push it to $1000 if it's just an incredible must-have deal. If I can't start E-flying for <$1k, I'll dig out my nitros. Performance: Wing loading: moderate to somewhat high. No uber-floaty high-wings, but no flying bricks, either. At least modestly aerobatic. (3D not necessary, but needs to be 'snappy' No high-dihedral dogs) Wingspan: Not super critical, but something between 36" and 53" would be ideal. I don't want a parkflyer or a giant scale. Just a decent sized plane that will feel solid in a light wind, at least. Flight times 4+ mins minimum. 7+ is a bonus. Style: Think Extra 300-ish. That would be ideal. However, would consider any sweet deals from Sportster-40-ish to Magic 3d-ish. [:D] Any ideas along those guidelines would be greatly appreciated :)

RE: Obvious Air Leak
You'll likely have to get the same sized bearing or it won't fit properly. A sealed bearing might be helpful, if you're lucky. If you do purchase a sealed bearing, you probably want to at least pull the seal off the "inside facing" side of the bearing, for lubrication.

RE: Negative Reviews?
I believe most people are savvy enough to not rely on a single review. It's the ones that aren't published that could potentially be the most helpful to consumers. Having an "all positive" review mechanism in place, as seems to be the case these days, just weakens the entire concept of having a review process in the first place. ( IMHO )

RE: Negative Reviews?
TTARK, Dr. Wogs... Reviewers are not the QC, QA, UA, or R&D departments for these manufacturers. When you've received an item for review, it is supposed to be representative of what they're shipping to the public. No more, no less. Your "job" is simply to offer opinions-- on building, setting up and flying-- to the public... not to the manufacturer. I can understand your views, if you're asked specifically to do a "beta build" or something. If approached, and asked beforehand, to build a kit, or try an engine, and render my opinions to the manufacturer, in exchange for the finished product, then yes, I'm sure I'd do just that. If they take the input and make a better product, then I'd be happy to give it the glowing review it deserves, when the thing is completed. Everybody wins. If the product is already on the shelves, or available for mail order... and my review item sucked... that's when the gloves should come off. Glossing it over at that point is good for the manufacturer, but bad for your personal reputation, the entity you're doing the review for, whether online or other... and for RC in general. Example? Do you think a manufacturer is going to switch to name brand fuel tanks, because I tell them theirs suck, and bust after three flights? Nope. Would I want to know that, as a buyer? Yup! As hinted to earlier... I'll agree that most products don't deserve a negative review, as most of the stuff that's out there is fantastic. It's just the knowledge that, if there ever is a real dog, we won't be reading about it in a review, that sets off some of our BS Alert Monitors sometimes.

RE: Negative Reviews?
ORIGINAL: Gringo Volador Is there a such thing as objective priduct reviews from experienced flyers?
Unless the reviewer is unsponsored, and bought the item with their own money, I generally don't place a lot of stock in anything they have to say, beyond any actual "build" instructions and tips/tricks that they might offer. I read the reviews just to take a look at the construction, and color scheme, as applicable. I'm sure there are a few reviews out there, on private websites, that are truly objective, and not sugar-coating the truth in any way. These sites are rare, and aren't usually well-visited, else they'd soon become sponsored, and then they'd be subject to the same old "don't bite the hand that feeds you" line as the rest of them. Not saying that every review is a misrepresentation, by a long shot. I'm quite sure that a lot of the reviews really are truthful. I haven't personally had bad luck with "everything" I've purchased... so no, I don't think all positive reviews are bogus. The problem is that, on those occasions when a kit/arf really is a dog, we never know the difference, because the sponsored website/magazine/tv show/whatever will glaze it over.

RE: Nobody at the Hobby Store can figure out this problem.
I know you didn't ask me... but I'll toss $.02 in anyhow :D If I had a problem that completely disappeared when replacing a component, to the point where it was no longer discernable... I'd replace that component, and be done with the issue once and for all. (In this case... the battery.) Afterwards, if you want to tinker... then you can take a look at the battery, and check all its connections: cell-to-cell, cell-to-leads and leads-to-connector. Finding nothing there, you could always test each individual cell, if you were really tenacious... saving the "good" cell(s) once you weed out the bad one(s). If you find nothing, even at the "individual cell" level, I'd simply toss the thing.

RE: Unresponsive businesses
Exactly! And I'm absolutely sick and tired of seeing that lame, worn out excuse that some small operation is unresponsive because they're "at a show", "at an expo", "at a rally", at a "meet", "fly-in", "fun fly", or at whatever "fill in the blank" event they're at. You really may be out of pocket due to a legitimate event, but in my opinion... if you're going to go away and leave your business phone, email, and snail-mail unattended for an extended period of time, then you should take the time to produce an answering machine message stating so... and an email auto-responder stating the same thing. Ignore my emails for more than one day... fail to return my phonecalls, and I will most likely shop elsewhere unless nobody else in the world makes a similar widget. Your website should also specifically mention that you'll be out of touch. Like a local "country store" owner, while out of town for a wedding recently. He had the the decency to put a big posterboard on the door: "Out Of Town: Closed Until Monday!" If a small brick-and-mortar can take the time to do that... surely an internet-active storefront can spare a few keystrokes to update their website temporarily, as needed.

Do you know Why there's a wealth of info here on RCU? Precisely because most people don't search for things. What would you have them do? Find the first thread, and decide that there is no other useful information about the subject? Yes, it "can" be annoying, to those who have answered the same questions over and over. It's still just part of the game. It's also the very method by which message boards (and usenet groups) thrive. Make it all into a FAQ, and you may as well have a static webpage, instead of forums ;)
ORIGINAL: drifter The thing that caught my eye in your post and that has not been addressed is this statement, " the club guru lives by the field saw my plane and drives over. .... He tells me how many radios he has and how close to a road i am " If he is that close to your flying area and unknowingly turns on a radio on your channel, what then?? Maybe that was his concern, and not some other ulterior motive. What would you do if someone were flying RC close to where you store and occasionally turn on radios for set up, etc.? Would you tell them of the possible danger?
I wondered about that part, too. The guy has just as much right to setup his airplanes in his home as the other guy does to fly. Hopefully, now that he's aware of a local flyer, he'll refrain while the flyer is out flying... or go to using a DSC cord or at least do his setup with the antenna down, or something. Who knows. I also wondered if it wasn't a threat, but I'm hoping it wasn't, for everyone's sake. (Nice plane you've got there... be a shame if something were to... happen to it.)
ORIGINAL: abufletcher But the AMA can only offer such protection if certain minimal safety guidelines can be met, namely, that flying take place in sanctioned locations under sanctioned conditions. In short, a club.
Not entirely true... namely, the part about "sanctioned locations and sanctioned conditions. In short, a club." The ama requires that you're flying by their guidelines for their insurance to cover you. Period. According to the way I read the rules, they don't require a club at all... nor anything "sanctioned" by the AMA. (Unless they've changed the rules this year, or something.)
