+1 on the killswitch. I combine its usage with my failsafe functions on the radio as well. If the throttle servo goes bad, you NEED to kill the engine. Period.

RE: ZD Racing
posted on rctech 12/7: Well, I finally got to get in some real race track time with the ZD. I did have to do a few changes initially, mainly due to the fact that I had a bad oring in one of the shocks in the rear. unfortunately I didn't have a spare for replacement, so after some playing around with some shocks I had laying around, I was able to mount up a 2 shocks in the rear from an academy GV2 pro Buggy. using the front buggy shocks, I needed to just go with a much bigger piston, remove the thread nut (which can go back) and also a shorter eyelet. The stock ZD springs fit over the shock fine. Went with a setup of I believe 60W front and 20W rear. stock springs, shocks leaned inwards. I did add some droop via the droop screws but didn't record the setting at the time. Pretty much got the rear arms limited to level and the front just above level. I used Sorex 32Rs up front, and Sorex 28Rs in the rear. This setup was very easy to drive. I still had a ton of steering, I even let the tires go a heat or two without saucing them and the vehicle improved even more. On the track I race at the stock motor and pinion combo was a tad slow, but one of the vehicles present driven by a Tekin sponsored driver was using a 6900Kv system in an RC18T, so I don't feel too bad I think with a hotter motor setup, I could really laydown some comparable lap times. The stock system however was very smooth on the bottom end. Almost too smooth as it didn't hit hard at all like you would think a brushless setup would. Had great power with the included RFI lipo pack, and it was comparable to the durtrax 30C pack I purchased as another track I will race at required hardcased lipos. With some of the future upgrades, I think I can make this vehicle a serious contender.

RE: ZD Racing
Hey guys, sorry for the long time between updates, there was a mixup on some parts I was supposed to get in so I didn't get to run my race due to that fact. I had broken a steering knuckle where the lower screw goes into the knuckle from below. So that is one part I would probably pickup spares on. Its pretty cheap part though and in-stock at amain. Now, I was going to run the vehicle without the front tranny setup so I could nurse it around the track, but without all the shafts connected the transmission would just spin. I am hopeful though that as a future hopup they could offer a ball diff setup front and rear, as I think that would offer a nice tuning option. I will be getting in the truggy body and posts here soon to try out with the buggy wing. It looks like you can run both as the mounting holes are there. I also got in some 24mm tires, and they work great, just narrow enough to run over the 12mm hexes. The next thing I am working on solving is that when using aftermarket wheels in particular, if you tighten the nut down you get some binding up of the wheels. I think with a shim or two in the right area, I can solve this, just need some time to look into it.

Hey guys, sorry for taking so long. I pretty much update on rctech as I always get weird login issues when coming here. http://www.rctech.net/forum/micro-mini-scales/324699-mrc-zd-racing-1-16-scale-vehicles.html I have pics posted there. Just to update, I went ahead and purchased a set of Traxxas 1/16 hexes, and they Fit perfectly. So you can run 12mm hex rims. Keep in mind though, when mounted up, you need a somewhat narrow rim or one with an offset up front. I had a spare set of VTA rims and tires lying around, and I got the fronts on fine and rears as well. It should work out nicely for some carpet action, could do some sedan rubbers on the vehicle easily.

RE: ZD Racing
I took the vehicle completely apart last night, i plan to take some pics when I do my rebuild. Anyway, here is some further impressions / info on the RTR: - The diffs are not oil filled. I haven't seen a diff setup like this before albeit I am not a big micro / mini guy, but maybe its more common. I'll post pics - The suspension components and chassis are actually made of a fairly stiff material, not junk. I was kind of suprised as it was almost as stiff as the Academy GV2 Pro a-arms, with the lower a-arms being the stiffest. - The screws are a good durability, I didnt' strip any of the philips on removal. - The shock towers and hingepin braces are a thicker metal than the top plate. They don't flex when I tried to do that with my hand, but the top plate is very flexible. When bolted up on the chassis however, it was sufficiently stiff. So maybe this was a design idea as it is significantly lighter that what I think it would be if it was the shame material as the shock towers and hingepin braces. - The axle appears to be 4mm thick, and the hex pin is about 1.5mm in diameter, so I would think that the 1/16 scale traxxas hexes should be able to be used on the vehicle. - The receiver box from some odd reason does not have a plastic / rubber plug where the wires go through. This would seal it from the elements, right now its just an opening where the wires can go through. Now, when I tried to just hand mount up a set of 26mm sedan foams over some 12mm hexes I had, I noticed that the steering knuckle hits on them wheel prior to reaching full throw lock. The stock wheels are actually more offset than the sedan foams, so that would make sense. So I am figuring the vehicle if you want to run a sedan style tire setup for carpet racing would need something with an offset or a thinner rim. When I tried out some offset VTA tires on there, they actually seemed to work well. So basically just need an offset wheel I am thinking, and the traxxas 1/16 hexes.

RE: ZD Racing
I got one of the 1/16s in to try out, it is the buggy version which isn't officially in stock yet for purchase, at least, it wasn't at the time when I got it (from what I can tell, its not listed up on places like amain yet). So, here are some of my initial impressions on the vehicle, with my testing being on a carpet track in stock form and over some jumps on concrete, basically to see how it handles as an RTR. I am still waiting to do a teardown of the vehicle: - Brushless motor was suffiicently powerful for the track and didn't experience any noticeable stuttering / cogging issues - Servo had good power and held the wheels true - The buggy jumped well, no weird pitching to one side or the other - Included lipo was balanced nicely and fit the tray very well - The adjustable battery tray stops are a really nice touch - The Radio included worked sufficiently well, good features for an AM unit - The tires are SUPER sticky, I had too much traction on carpet and should work well for dirt - Body was nicely painted, and the durable wing is a nice touch - Handling around the carpet track was good for out of the box, a few mods and it could be a great indoor racer - Shocks were assembled well, no leaky oil and did a good job on dampening - ESC had very smooth braking and throttle response Few areas they are addressing that I found: - The included springs are too long. They should be a bit shorter so ride height can be adjusted with spacers (something for options I am thinking) - Body is cut slightly too short,so it should be cut alittle longer to cover more of the chassis. A minor issue here, but something I came across: - when adding your own connector, the shortening of the wires slightly and using say a deans connector (non-micro), may cause some body fitment issues with the buggy body, depending on how much you trim. The buggy body is a tight fit by default. As mine was a pre-production kit, it didn't have a few of the other nice things in it like a manual for the ESC, etc. I was advised these have been added to production versions and I believe will be added to the site for download. The battery pack and ESC come with the mini style bullet connectors common to other micro vehicles. Also the RFI lipo used XH style (align I believe its called) balance taps. If I have time today I'll get some pics of the buggy. I am also working on finding out what wheels, etc. will fit the axle aftermarket for those who plan to race on carpet. So far, maybe the trinity adapter used for the Half-8 could work so you could run touring foams.

There are a few drivers with these out there, empirerc on rctech is running the dual pack setup. RC Dad on RCtech is running the standard version. RC Dad is the one who lives fairly close to me who I race with on occasion . I would recommend setting up an account on RC Tech if you don't have one, and contacting him to get some feedback on the vehicle. You can drop me a PM too, I sent Tim@MRC some impressions on the vehicle he received as well based. I should have a ZD Racing 1/16 coming in this week to test out from Tim.

Well thats a shame then as if the vehicle has the goods, then there are going to be those looking for a race level roller, or, you can do a race roller similar to how the 8ight-E is if the electronics are up to snuff.

RE: Backdraft 8E questions?
Well I am a racer first, basher none. Speed would only matter to me as far as what is raceable. For me if I was theorizing on what I would want on a race vehicle, I probably look for things along these lines: 1. Fully equipped with race level electronics (Tekin, etc) vehicle should come in just at ROAR weight minimum assuming 4000mah - 5000mah lipos for the 10 minute length mains. 2. top quality aluminum of sufficient thickness 3. Big Bore aluminum shocks in the 16mm and above range 4. Fully equipped with hex hardware. High quality hardware as well. 5. Race Rubber ala Proline M3 Crimefighters V2 rims or similar, or, no tires and rims, but price reflecting this. 6. Offered as a Kit only 7. Can't tell from the pics, but if not on the sport, definitely want fully captured hingepins 8. High quality bearings throughout the car 9. Graphite used where it could benefit the car instead of aluminum for weight (battery holddowns, etc) 10. Plastics of sufficient stiffness yet durability (not sure if the current plastics are soft or are race grade, haven't seen a car in these parts). 11. Low slung body 12. Comparably prices to other quality race kits like the Hyper 9E and Caster Fusion Pro. This is just off the top of my head without getting into specifics on how the vehicle is currently setup (diffs, etc). I think Redcat has something here from at least a layout perspective could be VERY interesting for racing purposes. Caster took there design and has really ran with it, Redcat probably could do the same. Right now my ride is the Hyper 9E, and I prefer it because I like how close to the centerline the electronics and running gear is, plus, with the center diff moved back, it puts more weight forward on the chassis for amazing steering. that is also I reason I like how narrow the chassis from the pics I have seen looks on the car. Plus, I like how the batteries appear to be protected by the chassis, nothing hanging over if what I can tell is correct.

There is a thread about this vehicle on rctech I have seen the vehicle in person, held it in my hands, etc. One of the drivers I race with is giving it a shake down. He is currently going to be trying the 2050Kv motor as the 2700Kv is too fast for his track on 4S. So far, for sure the included RFI lipos are excellent.
