RE: What the....?
What a trip, I don't think even the guys at OCC could have thought of that one! I found an article on the bike here: www.motorcycle-usa.com/294/1258/Motorcycle-Article/Customs-JRL-Cycles-Radial-Chopper.aspx

RE: Unexplained loss of control
Yes, receivers rarely ever fail, but excessvive heat will definitely shut them down. I have an experienced friend flying large gassers who had his rx lock out just after starting his plane and taxiing out prior to takeoff. The plane had been sitting in the sun between flights in the Texas summer heat. Luckily it was a good outcome. While most of us always make an effort to put our planes in the shade, sometimes it's just not possible depending on the facilities available. I usually keep a large white towel handy to help out. But on days like today I just "throw in the towel" and forget about it. It's 108F now in Dallas with no relief coming anytime soon. An informative link on the heat issue: This guys receiver locked out around 125F in a similar scenario. pakratt.weebly.com/b_9-03-11-futaba-r608fs-heat.html

RE: Goldwing 30cc, 50cc Aircraft Parts ....>>>
Best of luck with your endeavours on the Goldwing parts supply. If you're the only one supplying and the word gets out, it could be worth it I think. I have a Goldwing 30% MX2 (Fagen shceme) and it's my favortite 50cc plane at the moment. I would buy new parts for it in a heartbeat if I were to ding it up in the future. I've had no problems with Goldwing so far. They are cheap, but seem to have a fairly good track record. That is what attracted me. The ARFs are light and I've hammered mine pretty hard for a 100 flights now with no ill effects yet.

RE: DLE 55 performance/reliability ?
I run two DLE55's on 30% 3D type planes and couldn't be a bit happier with their performance so far. About 150 flights between them both now and never even as much as hiccup. 4.8v NiMh Ign batteries which safely give me 6 flights or so, SmartFly Kill switchs, and CM6 plugs.

RE: Help mounting DLE30 in Slipstream MXS
I have a DLE30 on a 25% MX2. With mine and my DLE55's, I've always mounted the throttle arm facing up to remain clear of the choke arm underneath it, this allows for an easy manual choke install too. It looks like yours is pointing down? Your firewall looks pretty small but you may be able to face the arm up. I would beef up the inside too if you havent' already. I put my throttle servos in the engine box right behind the firewall and use about a 3" arm at least 4-40 size.

RE: Why Is 3D Hated?
The bases have been covered quite well here already I think. 3D is simply just another flying style that happens to command a little more attention to safety and certainly respect for others. As for me, I like it for the challenge. With 3D and aerobatics in general there are a lot of precision maneuvers to hone and perfect unlike pattern and scale flying. 3D is not just jamming the sticks in the corners all the time from various attitudes! Yet I'm by no means an adrenaline junkie or crazy risk taker but just the challenge of a new skill gives great rewards to me when perfected. Many of us get into this hobby and migrate into one area of it which is totally fine. Some of us like to fly "on the wing" and some of us don't. Either is acceptable in its own way and most do a mix of flying styles. I got into giant scale gas and sometimes like to fly up close because I enjoy actually seeing my plane and its manuevers in detail. Showing off is the last thing on my mind. Conversly, at a distance a whole new and different challenge is ever present and that's just trying to tell the top from the bottom of your plane and which way it's going.
ORIGINAL: Capt Lou Truckracer: Thanks for your reply. I did everything you described. I did not use the gasket. I used the red RTV silicone and made sure bolts were clean and all threads were well coated with RTV or red locktite. RE: Dual Switches
If you have one dedicated switch on one battery and that one switch fails, it's game over. If you have two independent switches on one battery and one switch fails, then the working switch continues to provide power to the receiver. A number of suppliers will custom wire your packs with as many different types of leads as you want.

A123 Life Transmitter Packs
Just wondering how many are using these with their airplane transmitters? I run the Life batteries on my receivers and ignitions and would like to eleminate the NiMh packs entirely if I could. I understand the flat voltage curve would render the transmitter voltage display pretty much useless, but the ability to top ALL of your batteries off on the way to the field in a matter of minutes is priceless. Rudder Servo Arms: 3" or 4" ?
I have a new Goldwing 30% MX2 I'm currently setting up. I'll be doing mixed flying along with 3D so I'd like to get the maximum rudder deflection. Servo is Hitec 7954. It currently has a 3" Hangar 9 rudder servo arm on the rudder servo and to get max rudder deflection it's taking 140% endpoint travel which is the max on my transmitter settings. The cables are hooked on the rudder control horns at the closest point for max travel too. While this setup is showing to work fine, I've heard it is not good for the servo loading and life expectancy to completely max out its travel range? A 4" rudder arm seems like a better solution for a 30% plane of this type. Just wondering what most people use? I found these arms which I may order: www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/SWBSAH4.html

RE: Valley View Pitts Muffler...
ORIGINAL: CRFan1 hey all, been using a VV Pitts style muffler on my AJ Slick with DLE 30 and on about the 35 flight, the muffler cracked right behind the section thats bolts onto the motor...it fell off while flying and landed in a cornfiled, hehe. Anybody ever have that issue with one of these? I was kind of shocked but stuff happens I guess!
I had the exact same thing happen to me on my DLE30 with one of the pitts mufflers from VVRC. I've since switched to JTEC pitts mufflers and have found them to be the best I've used so far. I have one on my DLE30 and one on my DLE55. Both have held up extremely well with no additional supports added.

RE: Cause of an unbind FAAST?
It's unfortunate when the cause of a 'loss of radio control' goes undetermined. I fly 2.4 Futaba radios and receivers with mostly dual battery setups on my larger gas planes just as you have so this post caught my attention. No problems for me so far. I have various 617's, the 608, and 614 rx's. I very much hope that if you send the receiver in Futaba will find a fault with it, but as history shows in these cases I'm willing to bet they will say it's working perfectly. Do keep us posted with your findings.

RE: DLE 30 Prop Adaptor
I bought those same two items from VVRC for my DLE-30 and they work great! As a note, I tried the single bolt adapter on my DLE-55 too and eventually went back to the four bolt pattern. I found the prop just slipped to much for me without me having to crank the bolt down WAY harder than I wanted to. Nothing worse than your beautiful wood prop getting gouged up by the spinner cutouts.

RE: Aeroworks 35% Extra-Close call
A few months back I lost not one but BOTH wheels on my 30% Sbach. They were Sullivan metal hub too, never found em. I literally could not believe my eyes at the time. I saw one wheel fall about a minute after takeoff and then noticed the other one was gone on a flyby. What was even stranger is I have wheel pants on the plane so I just couldn't figure out how they came off. Brought it in on our grass field, killed the engine with the opto-kill on short final and then just stalled it in as slow as I could get it. It stuck in the runway like a pitch fork and reared up about 80 degrees but didn't flip over. Virtually zero damage, just bent the gear slightly. Upon closer inspection I found that both axles had sheared completely off right at the axle hub were it goes into the landing gear. The threaded bolt with nut and hub were still attatched to the gear but it was like somebody sawed the axles off completely flush. Apparently they were cheap axles that came with the plane and most likely were of two part construction where the axle is pressed into the hub. Being a fairly new plane and not even after a few hours of vibration they simply seperated and the wheels just fell right off, axles in all! I had virtually perfect landings to date too with hardly ever even much as a bounce. Bought a pair of $6 - 3/16" Dubros and they've worked great ever since. The originals were actually metric, as I had found when I couldn't get a 3/16" wheel collar on them. As far as the wheel collars go, I just locktite the set screws and have had no problems so far. The drilling with a cotter pin does sound like a neat idea though. I think PSP Manufacturing sells some nice titanium axles with solid reliable fasteners but I just could not justify the cost around $30 with shipping for two axles.

RE: Savox servos, Anyone using them?
ORIGINAL: bemeson I thought I would jump in here and give my opinion on Savox Servo's. I have been using the 1256TG and and 1258TG servos in my AW 30cc Edge and my GW 50cc Sbach. The servos have been awesome and I have over 75 flights on the Edge and and about the same on the SBACH. I fly mostly IMAC type stuff. The resolution on these servos is superb, they center perfectly, and most importantly they do not glitch when attached to my unregulated A123 batteries. The servos have a titanium gear train. I have removed all my Hitec 79XX servos from my remaining planes and I plan to replace them with various Savox servos. If anyone is interested in any additional information, please feel free to get a hold of me. I also know of a vendor that sells these servos at a very nice price. Thanks Brian
Thanks for the info. I am considering the Savox 1258TG for my 25% 30cc MX2, if I can get them at a good price. I currently have Hitec 7954's in it which I know are overkill, but I plan to put them in a larger 30% MX2 I have. I also have the 7954's in my 50cc Sbach and after 50 flights of semi-hard flying they are still perfect. I am aware of the problems with the 79xx series so at the moment I'm leery of buying more of these. I got a batch of 10 new ones 6 months ago for $75 ea. shipped. Problem is, for an appropriately rated torque servo for my small 25% MX2 I'm only finding about $10 or less in savings per servo for something such as the Savox 1258TG which has only HALF the torque of the Hitec 7954!

RE: Whats required?
I've left behind the wing "tube" on my large gasser planes many times. Thankfully I've always remembered it just a few minutes into my drive to the field. I think for many of us, that "mental checklist" finally kicks in gear but only "after" we leave the house!

RE: A123 Ignition Battery - voltage regulator or diodes?
Well, I generally do four 8 minute flights and I still have 75% left give or take.
Is this on an A123 battery going to the ignition? I agree on the FMA CellPro4 charger, I already have it and it's great. The other day I did four 14 minute flights and my two A123's only took about 500 mAh each to top them off. This is running 5 Hitec 7954's too. Seems like two 1100mAh batteries would suffice but at only two more ounces or so, the extra capacity vs. weight is negligible.

RE: A123 Ignition Battery - voltage regulator or diodes?
Thanks fellas, looks the diode reducer is a pretty good solution then. How many flights do you find you can get in on a single 2300 mAh A123 battery on the ignition? I run two of these into my receiver and find I could probably get 8 flights in on my 30% Sbach and still have a quite a bit left. The goal is to go to the field and not have to worry about recharging once I get there.

A123 Ignition Battery - voltage regulator or diodes?
I'm pretty much just about done with NiCd / NiMh batteries, at least on the big planes. The next thing is to convert my gas engine ignitions to A123 power as I've already done on my receivers/servos, and feel the diodes are a pretty safe way to do it. Again this is just for the ignition, I run unregulated directly into my receivers and they work great! I love A123, but always a fan of the KISS method I now have to add another choke point if I want to go this route. I've done some homework on the subject and it just seems the diodes are simplelist, safest and so far have a pretty low failure rate compared to regulators? I know both methods are effective and cost difference is minimal to me, I just want the most reliable / dependable. Some informative links: www.youtube.com/watch (thanks WrongWayRC, this is a great demo) www.rcaer.com/userfiles/file/RC%20Aero%20-%20Using%20Diodes%20to%20Drop%20Voltage%20on%20A123%20batterys.pdf

RE: Hitec 7954SH / 7950TG / 7985MG
I know the feeling, just a few more dollars and you can just about double the torque of the servo. I bought ten new Hitec 7954SH's off Ebay a while back for $75 ea. shipped. Running on unregulated A123s they are great in 50cc airplanes. I wouldn't see a need for using the 7950 in anything smaller than 35% however, and this servo is not without its problems. There's a big thread on it over on the FG forums. So far my 7954s have held up great but they have no more than about 30 flights on them. I'm hesitant at the moment to buy more until I really get some time on them.

RE: Best A123 capable (and Lipo, etc.) charger.... ?
I've bought from Hangtime Hobbies before and his products and service are outstanding. The website is very informative too. I'm slowly switching to all A123s with the single lead. It makes charging easy as heck right through the charge port/switch on your plane. He now carries the Hitec 4 port multi-charger with optional single charge/balance leads which I think I'm gonna get. I currently use the FMA CellPro Multi4 with the custom single lead, it's simple and works like a charm.
