RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
ORIGINAL: H.Dale Capt Easy do you know how the weathering was done along the panel lines of your CMP Spitfire? I was wondering if it was done with a brush? I am working on a Spit and would like to try it. It looks more realistic than black lines. Thanks in advance. Hal
Hello Hal, I used a Silver Felt Tip Calligrahpy Pen - you can find them at arts and craft stores like Michaels

A friend advised me of this site and after looking it over I'd be proud to be a member. Please sign me up....the thread is such a tribute to this aircraft. RE: Sportsman Avaiation Ryan STA
Hey Merlin- I haven't flown my Ryan in several months after one of the wire struts broke. I've been devoting my time working on a CMP Spitfire 50 since last May - modifying and adding several scratch built scale details. I need to have someone weld up a replacement gear for my Ryan but it'll fly again. Best, Dick

RE: Sportsman Avaiation Ryan STA
Thanks for the comments. I'd like to show off some more pics but I messed something up and the post is much larger than it should be... Our comparative AUW seems reasonable considering the battery difference. I don't understand why mine seems to fly so poorly. I just acts like it has an extremely high wing load. A friend stopped by and suggested shimming the attach bolt and increase the angle of incidence - I will try that but I don't think it will help much I don't know it might be interesting to see what happens. I'll try some more photos here...

RE: Sportsman Avaiation Ryan STA
Merlin, I purchased the airplane pre-built with a .40 glow and converted it to EP. In the process I added personalized scale mods including wing flying wires made from windshield wiper spines; tail wires made of vinyl plastic craft lacing some cockpit combing and instrument panels. I wouldn't think what I added would increase weight that much more . I think the prior owner modified the gear on it also as it's much stronger than the stock original. I'm running a Rhino 4000 4S 25C battery wt:15.6oz. Total aircraft AUW: 4lb 9oz. I don't know what the desired AUW should be - what does your's weigh? Thanks for you interest.

RE: Sportsman Avaiation Ryan STA
Merlin, Good to see your back flying your Ryan. I'm confused which one of the two you flew though...I assume the Byron is the one on the left and much more scale looking than the Sport A. My SA Ryan flys like a brick truck. Gobs of power but just a terribly heavy wing load. Best, Dick

RE: BH Models
Your wife obvioulsy has exquesite taste....it's a beautiful plane but you're very wise in making your own gear. I wish I'd been smart enough to do the same . Still have not flown mine yet....I'm waiting for the right weather conditons here and the nerve. I'm pretty certain the gear will not hold up to an unimproved surface unless I set it down perfectly. Good luck and enjoy... Dick

I think your efforts and determination are worth a note of praise here. I'll continue to follow the progress. It's a good looking airplane and hopefully worth the trouble. Dick

Thanks Tommy. I'll look into finding some CF rod. It certainly couldn't hurt. It still has not flown it yet, as is. If weather looks decent I may be tempted. I'll post the result whenever. Best, Dick

Tommy - I'mcurious if the CF pushrods helped reduce the weight enough to justify the extra trouble......what's your conclusion? Dick

RE: BH Models
ORIGINAL: _Tommy D Cap I'm at about 6.5 lbs and a tad tail heavy. Going to make some CF pushrods for the tail today and see how much that helps. On my BH Super Air that got my CG on the money. Refresh us with what battery, motor combo your running? Tommy
Tommy - This is my current power set up. Motor: TGY C3548-900kv BAT: RHINO 4000mAh 4S 25C ESC: TGY 60A UBEC: 10A CC PROP: MAS 12X6 AUW: 7.5 LBS Full Throttle: 750+W 50.3A 15.4V At this point I don't know why it came out so heavy....15.9 oz lead was added fwd to overcome a very tail heavy attitude. I plan on hanging a TURNIGY 12x6 wood prop with the present motor which should add more power. I'm also considering a larger, heavier motor to add usable weight. I never expected the AUW to be what it is. Dick

RE: BH Models
I guess most everybody has given up on this thread. I just did an initial W&B. I was hoping for the best after reading a couple earlier posts on the CG but my airplane balanced at about 120cm - only about 40mm from the desired 80mm. It took 15.7oz to on the front cowl before it balanced correctly. I hate to think of adding that much more weight, it's already tipping the scale at 5.6 pounds. Maybe a bigger motor would be better, at least it would be usable weight. The cowl could also be moved further out to increase the moment and reduce some of the the added weight. Anyone out there interested in posting further comments on the subject of this airplane please do so. I have a great deal of interest in the Golden Age and the Gilmore Red Lion in particular. It's too bad this example has turned out to be more difficult than expected. Thanks

RE: BH Models
Sorry you had trouble with the decals. I applied the wing decals without window cleaner and got some bubbles but got smart later on the fuse and used the Windex and they came out real well. The gear will be a problem I think. I'm almost tempted to see how much another wing would be and redesign the legs. Ref the prop, I have a 12x6 MAS installed and only 1 3/4" extend beyond the cowl....looks sort of meager. If the WP guys are doing well I guess it should be ok but I'm still curious what your prop Guru and advisor will offer. Dick

RE: BH Models
Tommy, I'm curious how your decals came out and if you were satisfied with them. Also - something of conceren for me regarding about the prop size and any problems with the large diameter of the WW cowl interfering with the prop's efficiency....have you or anyone else come up with any advise or comments on the EP conversion? Best

RE: BH Models
I've nearly completed an electric conversion on BH Red Lion and my initial first impressions were very positive....until it it came to installing the main gear - what a pain. This is my fifth ARF and second BH. Relative inexperience and terrible instructions left me totally puzzzzzeld during that phase. I had to call HP as well and did get some advice on it but it's still a difficult issue so I'm really pleased I found this thread and intend to follow up on some of the mods. After the gear gets sorted out CG and weight will be checked - I'm really curious now. At least it's good to know someone's had some good flying experience with it so far. It's such a great looking airplane I'd hate to just hang it up. Any further comments would be appreciated especially advise on CG or flight performance. Dick

RE: Sportsman Avaiation Ryan STA
Greeting to any remaining Ryan Pilots out there - I just picked up a pre-built, used Sportsman Aviation Ryan YPT-16/STA and would like to communicate with anyone and learn if they're still flying theirs. I've been studying the problems with this model and resulting modifications and intend to take whatever prcautions required to insure a safe and reliable airframe. My plans include reinforcing the wing spar and landing gear blocks and already added some of my own scale details including proper windscreens and leather cockpit combing. The original struts will be replaced with streamlined alum tube and flying /landing wires will be attached to the wings for combined structure and addtional scale details. I do need an uncut cowl if anyone may have one and maybe a set of wheel pants. I contacted Global but after all this time of course they really don't have any parts remaining. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dick
