RE: Sub Fun
Latest work This is a continuation from several months ago when I decided to revise the mold for the JetNautilus. A new plug was made, and from that a revised mold was made. From that mold, version 3 of the JetNautilus was made. Since I was anxious to incorporate the latest developments into this new hull I deferred work on revising the remaining top half hull mold which has lateral keels built into it. I am in the process of adding the lateral keels to the plug so that I can revise the mold with lateral keels. The picture below shows the revised mold without lateral keels and the old mold with lateral keels. Alternate view The difference between the two other than the lateral keels is that the old mold is slightly wider than the new but this might not be noticeable in a picture. Also the deck is slightly taller by a few millimeter,in the new, since this is the portion most visible when the sub is in the water. The picture shows hulls made from the current mold, version 3 of the JetNautilus, and an unfinished hull. To the far left of these is the new plug with the addition of the lateral keels, which I'm currently working on. When this plug work is complete it will be used to revise the mold which currently has lateral keels. The hull shown next to this mold (to be revised) is used as a test bed for special effects creations. It was made from the "old mold". The point of this is that if I can reduce the labor in making a hull I might be able to have a few available to sell. This effort will be detailed in the following Yahoo site for anyone interested with only limited progress reported on RC groups so as not to burden the site. In this way I can get all the information in one spot. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Jetnautilus/ It is public and anyone interested is welcome.

RE: Sub Fun
Here is another sub fun video. For anyone not familiar with the sub its version 3.0 of the 4 foot JetNautilus using DVVT. This means that it operates on both 12 V and 24 V. There is no propeller, no dive planes, no failsafe or pitch controller, no servos and the rudder is fixed. There are no moving parts (except the pumps). http://home.comcast.net/~ryourk/727.wmv At about 2:08-12 there may be a small gator keeping an eye on Nemo. I couldn’t see it until I viewed the video, can’t be certain though. OR http://www.youtube.com/user/tyourk Trying to consolidate info into one source FYI http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Jetnautilus/

RE: Help designg sub-(Engineering Project)
PVC pipe 4 diameter 2-3 ft long. A 12 volt sealed lead acid batt, (any waterproof bat or compination at least 12v or better)on/off switch, a cone in the front, a bilge pump in the back, some fins. Trim (put foam around the top half of the PVC pipe) so the sub is slightly buoyant and level. Bilge pump may have to stick out the bottom a little. No WTC no prop, shaft, or seals. But not sure if 80 will cover that.

RE: Know nothing about , so?
The video shows the sub diving and breaching. It has to go down 8-10 ft to turn up for a breach. http://home.comcast.net/~elyourk/TTP417.wmv It can go much deeper, but when out of sight you run the risk of losing the sub in the mud or debris on the bottom. Also it will go under water horizontally further than you can see it. But not much point in doing that other than to test limitations.

Nautilus on a windy day
This is a recent video of the Nautilus on a very windy day. One good thing about a submarine is that no matter how big the waves, a submarine can generally handle it pretty well as you can see in the video. http://home.comcast.net/~max0007/918.wmv

RE: Engine
160 feet, I think you're on the wrong board. Try ROVs or deep diving robotics, or autominous underwater sensors, deep diving remote vehicles, maned/unmaned submersibles, scientific research vehicles, torpedoes etc.

RE: Displacement once submerged: the same as when floating?
Yes The displacement weight and the weight of the sub are separate parameters. The weight of the sub can vary. You can add a lead weight or water to the internal volume of the sub to increase its weight. You displace air which weighs considerably less than lead or water. Displacement weight, on the other hand, depends on the shape of the sub, (volume) it is a constant and cannot be changed unless the shape of the sub is changed. It is the weight of water (salt slightly heavier) equal to the volume of the sub. i.e Fill the bath tub to the brim. Place a brick in the tub. Some water spills over. Collect that water and it will weigh less than the brick. The brick sinks. Take a piece of wood same dimensions as the brick, the displaced brick water weighs more than the wood piece, the wood floats. If the displacement weight of a model submarine is 100 pounds (freshwater, slightly more if salt) and the weight of the sub is 90 pounds, 10% of the sub will be above the water line and 90% below. If the two weights are equal, theoretically the sub is at neutral buoyancy and is submerged.

RE: Breaching Nautilus
ORIGINAL: skitt Nice! I love the rising from the depths shots. Is this a kit? Skitt
Skitt, No it's not a kit. It's scratch built. I have made both a 7 foot and 4 foot model that work off the same principle. Both subs are controlled by bilge pumps, there are no moving parts (other than the impeller on the bilge pump). One big advantage to this system is that without a propeller there is (almost) no likelihood of entanglement in weeds. I have a webpage for the 7 foot but not the 4 foot. http://home.comcast.net/~byourk/7footaa.html The following is some information on the 4 foot. The breaching video shows version 2 of the original 4 foot model and incorporates various improvements discussed below. http://home.comcast.net/~gustofur/TESTS.pdf http://home.comcast.net/~gustofur/NHPTD.pdf http://home.comcast.net/~gustofur/4ft.pdf Tom

RE: "Crush Depth"
These subs routinely dive to 20-30 ft and possibly more. Propulsion is from bilge pumps which are apparently sealed very well. Electrics are well sealed with only wire protruding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntKT1araF3U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAZyLDECPac&mode=user&search= But I don't know crush depth?

I guess you’re referring to the “rakers ? To make a long story short, the Goff Nautilus design will tend to nose dive with increased surface speed. Once underwater it performs perfectly level. For details http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/member.php?u=40728
