RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I got mine last week. But, I don't get to actually take it out of the box for several more weeks since it is my birthday present. I have to say I was shocked to see the final credit card bill which arrived last night. With shipping to northern Virginia it cost $775. That is $125 to ship it! I had heard that shipping had increased, and I know it is a big box, but WOW! I was expecting it to be about half that much since that is about what I got charged for other similar sized aircraft recently from other sources. Anyway, the plan is for an axi 5330 F3A motor. I can't wait to get started on it after waiting for it for soooo long.

RE: 100 inch long airplane
ORIGINAL: orthobird hi does anyone have any advice on a trailer i can purchase that can transport this bird a matt chapman 1/3 scale plane it is 98" long i would prefer the trailer not be too big and i do not have to be able to walk inside it if it looks like a luggae trailer or so, that would be fine also it cannot be too heavy since i will be pulling it with a 6 cylinder nissan xterra thanks
Throw away/sell the nissan and get yourself a Dodge or Chrysler Minivan. Fold all the seats down and that plane will fit no problem. (I have that plane and a Dodge)

RE: Should the AMA consider changing FPV Ops 550.pdf
ORIGINAL: bkdavy The only change I would make to the FPV guidelines would be removal of the weight/speed requirement. If the plane is operated IAW all other AMA rules, on a buddy box, within VLOS, the weight and speed restrictions add nothing. Brad
I am in agreement with you bkdavy. In reading the letter posted in the original post link, my first thought was that the reasons cited were childish and unsubstantiated.

RE: OS GT33 33cc gasser
ORIGINAL: MTK Aside from some early trouble I had with mine (broken backplate, a casting flaw probably), the 33GT has run just great. I have mine piped and soft mounted and have run the following props: 18x10, MDK hybrid (I make these; outrageous rpm, much too high to be useful to me and loud) 18.1x10 (apc, clearly not enough load, terrific rpm) 18x12 MDK hybrid (rpm down around 7800 with great authority and power , just a bit loud) 19x10 (laminated Xoar, okay performance a bit loud) 19x11 apc (my current favorite, mid throttle rpm 6800; full throttle rpm 7550 rpm, outstanding power for an 11 pound plane, good speed control quietest of all other props I have tried) 20x10 ZDZ (only bench ran this one, around 7100 rpm when engine was brand new; making a 20x10 MDK hybrid and will have numbers in next couple months) 18x10 Mezjlik 3 blader carbon, (good all around prop but not enough pitch or load, 7700 rpm, and louder than I expected. An 18x12 3 blader would be much better) I have a 14 oz tank in mine and flight time is around 16 minutes. I work throttle constantly in pattern so I'd say the flight time is at half throttle average time or around 70-80% power
Wow! Thanks for the prop information. I just ordered one of these to put in a CAP 232 I used to have a Saito 180 in. Looks like I may need to re-think my propellar choice as it looks like this engine will turn more prop than I was expecting. Given your comments on the 19x11 apc two blade and the 18x10 mezjlik 3 blade, I am now wondering about a 3 blade biela in around 18x10.

RE: Regulation passed the House
SEC. 336. SPECIAL RULE FOR MODEL AIRCRAFT. (a) IN GENERAL.—Notwithstanding any other provision of law relating to the incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into Federal Aviation Administration plans and policies, including this subtitle, the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration may not promulgate any rule or regulation regarding a model aircraft, or an aircraft being developed as a model aircraft, if— (1) the aircraft is flown strictly for hobby or recreational use; (2) the aircraft is operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide community- based organization; (3) the aircraft is limited to not more than 55 pounds unless otherwise certified through a design, construction, inspection, flight test, and operational safety program administered by a community-based organization; (4) the aircraft is operated in a manner that does not interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft; and (5) when flown within 5 miles of an airport, the operator of the aircraft provides the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the airport) with prior notice of the operation (model aircraft operators flying from a permanent location within 5 miles of an airport should establish a mutually-agreed upon operating procedure with the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower (when an air traffic facility is located at the airport)). (b) STATUTORY CONSTRUCTION.—Nothing in this section shall be construed to limit the authority of the Administrator to pursue enforcement action against persons operating model aircraft who endanger the safety of the national airspace system. (c) MODEL AIRCRAFT DEFINED.—In this section, the term ‘‘model aircraft’’ means an unmanned aircraft that is— (1) capable of sustained flight in the atmosphere;
Interesting discussion, but it seems the forest is being missed for the focus on the trees; or am I the only one that has a problem with #2 which delivers regulatory power to a private organization and requires non-members to adhere to its standards or be in violation of the law?

RE: Why can't RC flying be more like Bowling?
ORIGINAL: RCVFR I like Bowling. It's a fun way to spend time with others, I enjoy it. Unlike RC flying, bowling is simple, not a lot of rules or nomenclature to learn. With RC, if I want to share my experience with others, there is a whole raft of words I have to learn: parts of the airplane, movable thingies, gas that's gasoline and gas that's not, nitro (don't have to know what it is, but it sounds cool) engine tuning, HSN, LSN. Engine/moter thrust offset. Volts, watts, amps, ESC, BEC (for those of us who don't know an electron from a futon, that's daunting). Bowling is simple: the round thing is a "ball" or "bowling ball", the things on your feet are "bowling shoes", the polished wood floor with gutters on each side is the "lane", the 10 pieces of wood at the end are "pins". Roll the ball down the lane, knock over as many pins as you can, repeat. It's so much easier to share my bowling experiences with others. Count the number of pins downed, number of beers, etc. Actually, beer count is optional.
You have defeated your own argument! You talked about a simple thing like flying a model plane and compared it to something complex that requires pins, lanes, gutters, shoes, balls, spin, apples, benders, hooks, splits, spares, big fills, big fives, big fours, bedposts, alleys, people "addressing" the ball, arrows, boxes, bonuses, belly balls, body english, creepers, deflection, delivery, dovetails, double wood, foul lines, grasshoppers, grooves, woolworths, kresges, lofting...and it goes on and on and on. ( http://www.bowlersparadise.com/help/glossary.shtml ) I'll stick with the simple models thank you!

RE: FLYING BALONEY
ORIGINAL: topspin There seems to be a lot of misinformation being tossed adound on another site regarding two major spread spectrum radios on the market. The Futaba and Spektrum systems use direct spread modulation schemes and don't frequency hop. Frequency hopping is indirect spread spectrum, not direct spread and operates in a completely different way than direct spread. In the direct spread spectrum system a P/N code is mixed with the data stream in a phase shift modulator (sine of X/X). The resulting envelope is a carrier suppressed double sideband spread signal. When the P/N sequence is re-inserted in the de-spread correlator (an Exclusive Or) in the receiver the embedded P/N in the signal and the added P/N cancel and only the data is left. The signal de-spreads or, vector sums to one while signals that do not correlate are spread into the noise. That is what makes direct spread far less prone to jamming and data loss. So I wish the numbskulls who clearly have no understanding of the process yet are tossing BS around about how they work would just be quiet. They are not educating anyone and are putting out false information. John.

ORIGINAL: topspin The Spektrum system which is what they were attempting to rag on uses direct P/N sequence spread spectrum. It occupies a bandwidth that is determined by the P/N rate. Fewer bits equals less bandwidth, more bits equals more bandwidth. The FASST system uses an indirect spread spectrum system and does frequency hop so it's instantaneous signal bandwith remains the same but the average bandwidth is again determined by the P/N (Chip) rate so yes, it does hop. These are two ways to accomplish the same thing but the modulation and demodulation technique and the signal output is very different. The indirect spread system hops randomly within a preset bandwidth so that statistically there is a lower probability that interference will be on every frequency. The output looks like a standard FM PCM signal that jumps around. The direct spread system spreads the signal over a bandwidth determined by the data rate so that the data is in many places at once and looks like a very wide suppressed carrier double sideband signal. The data in each sideband (either side of the carrier null) is identical and thus the probability of interference is greatly reduced. Because each tranmitter generates a unique code it allows a great many systems to occupy the same bandwidth at once without interference. This is exactly the same system used by cell phones where each phone has a unique P/N enabling Code Division Multiplex (putting many phones in the same radio spectrum) such that you only hear the signal that corellates to your unique ID (P/N code).
See the bolded portions of each post. Let us know when you decide which you really mean...

Ah, gotcha! I agree, the only CF card I own is the one for my 14mz, well I guess that makes two, the one that came with it and the larger one I bought to actually use in it. I could see them even using those mini SD cards like cell phones use. Pop them in the adapter card and they are usable in a regular SD reader. Of course, they are really small and could get lost easily...
