RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Can I join? [8D][;)] The white one was clocked at 174km/h (~104mph) at our Mother's Day Funfly (level pass after slight dive) with a tired Royal .46 on 10% fuel.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Wes - I moved the CG from about 16 1/2" (from the TE of the wing) to 15 1/4" (with the tank empty) and that made all the difference. Trimmed out okay and inverted became possible. Laddie - Thanks for the kind words. I was just a kid when I saw the NS in RCM and I've always wanted one of my own. I've previously had a Laker and a Force 1 but the NS was always my favourite. I'm thinking of doing another one and this time going electric similar to yours.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Flew my NS at Shushwap today and had a great time. Met some old friends and made a bunch of new ones. Had a rough start to the day as I had what we thought was some sort of radio interference. After some head scratching and probing turned out to be a faulty switch. Thankfully the hobby shop onsite (Lester's) had some parts I could use to put it back together. Put in another 5 flights and had an awesome day flying off water for the first time in about 15 years.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Flew the maiden flight on my Northstar today. We have a big float-fly coming up soon and I wanted to fly it before then so I took it to another club field close by and flew it off the grass. First flight was a success in the fact it came back in the same amount of pieces it took off with. Power: TT .46 - OS muffler for maiden - subsequent flights will have the mini-pipe shown in the pictures Servos: HS-77 in the back and a standard airtronics onthe rudder and an HS-625MG for aileron AUW: 7lbs 7oz - not too bad considering it wasn't built with any emphasis on weight savings - 18oz of lead in the nose Used a Master Airscrew (wood) 11x6 and did not have great power but decided to give it a go anyhow. Accelerated quite well off the wet grass and broke ground with not too much room to spare over the fence. Needed quite a bit of up trim to hold level and I thought I had used it all (as someone) helped me trim it for the first flight. Since I still had to hold in quite a bit of elevator I didn't get a good sense of how this plane can fly. I also had the ailerons reflexed down which of course effected the level trim. I felt the speed was lack-luster but that had more to do with propping and the higher altitude (then I normally fly at) then anything else. I've now gone to the mini-pipe and a 10x7 APC and will give that a go. All-in-all the flight report isn't great but the maiden is done, it flies so I'm happy. Once it's properly trimmed and propped I think it will be a very fun plane.

Has anyone ever tried an NS without the LEX's? I'm finishing off one that was partially built and am not sure if I want to put in the extra effort if they aren't really needed.

RE: Ultra Sport 40 Kit Bash
This project is something I've wanted to do for a long time and doing it with a proven design has reduced the amount of unknowns and made great plane (and in my opinion) a better looking and even better performing one. I can now take what I've learned on this project and put that toward a version built from the ground up in this same configuration. As the design evolves I hope to make it even better. Plans are still in the works for a 90/1.10 sized version and possibly electric. I've also come up with some slightly crazier ideas for a float version (Schneider Cup style) and even a push-pull twin.
ORIGINAL: prgonzalez Very nice job in all of your US. Is there a significant difference in weight among your Ultra Sports?
My Ultrasport 40 retract version weighs in at 5lb 15oz and the Forward swept version tips the scales at 6lb 1oz. That also includes a few ounces in the nose, the heavy Great Planes adjustable motor mount and a heavy sub-C cell battery. I could reduce that by about 3oz by switching to a lipo alone. The Ultrasport 60 is 8lb 4.5oz.
ORIGINAL: doxilia On another note, what software do you guys use/recommend for mocking up trim schemes quickly? I've always done it by hand but software is evidently much more flexible.
When I do mine, I put the outline in Autocad, convert it to a bmp and either play around with it in MS Paint or Photoshop

RE: Ultra Sport 40 Kit Bash
Added the wheel pants finally. Over 60 flights have now been flown. This is now my favorite plane I've got as it can do pretty much anything I ask of it. Very quick and very stable at low speeds as well. It flies noticeably better than my standard Ultrasports and that's saying quite a bit.

RE: Airplane Finish
ORIGINAL: flyncajun Now if you have the experiance to plan the build you can compensate for the weight gain of a glass finish and reduce the weight of the airframe. then you can have a light, painted airframe. But that was not the question. Bryan
So for this application (weight sensitive) I guess the consensus is that I stick with the Ultracote until I get some more experience with fiberglass and paint. Thanks for all the advice.

RE: Airplane Finish
Thanks for the advice so far but I think it's time to add some more info. I'm building a Balsa USA Northstar. If you are not familiar it's a delta wing seaplane that is notoriously tail heavy. The recommended finishing job is to fiberglass the bottom of the hull then cover with either Ultracote or Fabric & paint. My thought was to cut lightening holes in the wing ribs, sheet with contest balsa then fiberglass & paint the entire plane. After playing around with fiberglass paint on the previous plane I'd like to try it on an entire plane and figured this might be the right time as it will seal the airframe as well as give a nice finish. Most of the people who have done this say it will make it come out really heavy but on the other hand I don't know there skill level with glass so it could just be that it was done improperly.

Airplane Finish
This isn't necessarily in regards to pattern planes but you guys seem to have the best and lightest finishes out there. Last year I followed Mike Hester's [link=http://www.customairframes.com/caaforum/showthread.php?t=93]technique[/link] to glass a small balsa cowl but now I want to do an entire plane. My question is do you guys feel this is any heavier than film covering or if done right it should be the same or at least very close?

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
ORIGINAL: Evil_Merlin Why did most fighters in WW2 have a wingspan of 30 to 40 feet, with most falling around 33-35 feet?
So they could fit them in the Hangar. At least that's why the Shorts Stirling had a wingspan of just over 100 ft. The hangar door size was 112ft
from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Stirling It is often said that the wingspan was limited to 100 ft (30 m) so the aircraft would fit into existing hangars, but the maximum hangar opening was 112 ft, and specification required outdoor servicing. The wingspan limit was imposed in an (unsuccessful) attempt to ensure the Stirling's weight was kept down.
RE: MVVS .77
Thanks for the info. Could you tell me what RPM the .77 & the .49 deliver the best power. Both of them are in Ultrasports and I'd like some options on props I should try for each. They are great motors but they also tend to be on the loud side. The .49 has the standard muffler but the .77 has the tuned silencer.

MVVS .77
Putting my .77 back together after the Cylinder came loose again and noticed the notch in the sleeve isn't lining up with anything. Is this normal? Most engines I've seen it lines up with the head or one of the head bolts.

RE: Ultra Sport 60 Engine?
About 2.8 minutes after that picture was taken I crashed it [:'(] It's since been rebuilt with a new foam wing. It's quite simple really, the balsa on the bottom of the nose was cut out and replaced with a 1/4" ply piece with tri-stock reinforcement which the landing gear then mounts to. It held up for about 40 flights till the crash. 2 flights after the rebuild it tore out but has been beefed up with Carbon Fibre along the seems and has held up well since. The gear are Bolly F3A which are pricey and hard to get nowadays but Hobbyking make some that should work nicely. If I were to do it again I would do it similar to my Forward Swept 40 size [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8540770/anchors_8540770/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#8540770]Divny 50[/link]. It uses a full 1/16" ply sheet with another 1/16" ply backup and tri-stock. Much more solid and very little extra weight. This is a pic of the 40 size. If you want more let me know.

RE: What was your shortest lived model?
My father and I built a Balsa USA Force 1 (the 40 sized delta). Couldn't seem to get much power out of the Supertigre 40 but he decided to make another takeoff run. Got up a bit of speed but couldn't get it more than two or three feet off the ground. WHAM!!!! Right into our newly minted fence around the field. Broke through the spars and went straight into the garbage.

RE: The Long Awaited Ultra Sport 60 Build Thread
ORIGINAL: Redback The next issue is going to be the wing fillets. The problem is that the wing does not fit well in the saddle, with some fair size gaps (The incidence was OK so I didn't want to start adjusting it until the dowells were in). The instruction say that the 1/32 fillet base should glued to the bottom of the wing saddle, however to do this I am going to need to bridge the gaps to get a good fit. Anyone else hit this problem and have a way round it? At the moment the plan is to build up the saddle, but would be interested if there are other solutions. Terry
Start with post #841 (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6822225/mpage_34/key_/tm.htm#) and the following couple. I ended up skipping the fillets but worked very well for me.

RE: Ultra Sport 60 build,
Keep it simple. Cut a hole in the bottom (or side of fuse) approx. 1"x2". Put a piece of lite-ply across the fuse a little smaller then your battery (to keep weight to a minimum), use lightening holes as well. Take a small piece of foam rubber, place the battery on top of that and secure with a velcro strap. Recover the hole with your covering and you're done.

RE: Help me add lift to this canard.
Canard (or 4-point) hydros are very quick when they are setup correctly. But....... To get them setup properly is very tricky. I raced hydros many years ago and there was only one succussful design I can ever remember. If the setup was off, even the slightest amount they were pigs. Sponson design, CG are the main factors but also thrust line as well. From what I remember they had small canards on the nose to help as well. Ask around the nitro boat forum, I'm sure you'll find some help. Here's what happens when you push them just a tad too far.

RE: Cowl Cutting Advice
Short amount of time and accurately don't go together on this particular task. Couple ways..... If you have the plastic one from the kit, put it together then cut that one to size first. Then use that one as a template. If you screw it up, no big deal as you usually toss them once your done. Use cardboard templates. Tape them to the side of the fuse marking the locations you need cut. Pull the engine out, mount the canopy then transfer the lines. Go slow and be patient is probably the best advice.

RE: Ultra Sport 40 Kit Bash
If you look at the picture on post #2 you'll see what I ended up doing. I replaced the balsa piece with 1/8" aircraft ply. I then added another piece of 1/8" aircraft ply where the gear would be mounted. I then used some balsa tri-stock to beef it up some more. This is the same way I did it on my US 60 and it's worked very well. I feel it gives the US's a more modern look and another option if you want to use fixed gear but don't like the looks of the wire gear hanging down.

RE: Ultra Sport 40 Kit Bash
Just a quick update...... Now have almost 40 flights on it. Flying very well. Have replaced fiberglass gear with a CF set. Will allow me to try some larger props. It's a very fast plane but I would like to trade off some speed for better vertical. Running an 11x7 now but I'd like to try an 12x6 or 12x5. Next couple days I'm going to start making molds for wheel pants.
