RE: Eric Fearnley Hellcat
A friend of mine wanted to build a Hellcat from these plans and asked me to cut him the kit. I looked the plans over, decided to go a different direction and designed my own Hellcat. I am developing a group build for it and my plan is not to leave anything to the imagination. See the link below if you are interested. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9187106/tm.htm Regards, Chad Veich

RE: Fiberglass cowl build advice needed
How about adding the section that slides over the fuse to your plug so that you don't have to do your lay up on the fuselage itself?

RE: ROBARTS ZIROLI 92
Looking forward to seeing the Jug with some markings on it. Decal setting solution will pull those water slide decals right down into the panel lines and rivets so they look just like paint. Are you doing a particular scheme or just adding the standard insignias and markings?

RE: Grumman F6F Hellcat Color Scheme
Here is how I'm going to paint mine but I admit it may not be everyone's cup of tea. My next one will be in this color scheme. A bit more traditional but with enough trim to make it a bit easier to see.

RE: Grumman F6F Hellcat Color Scheme
Mike Oberst goes by "IFLYBVM2" here on RC Universe. You might send him a PM to get the low down on the Hellcat. I can't think of any Hellcats with yellow trim other than those based on the Bunker Hill with yellow cowl rings. However, those were overall dark blue. Good luck with it. Chad Veich

RE: Air or electric for big bird retracts?
I use the B&D nose wheel units for tail wheels in my big warbirds just as BobH does and I really like them. I have a set of their .60 size main gear retracts as well but have not had opportunity to use them. I really like the look of them with one exception which is the plastic air nipples. Mine are very old however and they may have upgraded to metal nipples these days.

RE: Royal Kits
ORIGINAL: scale dail That looks good Chad! Is it done? That is what mine looks like now- all framed up. My canopy is a little messed up. I got one for the Royal Ki-61 from E-bay, but it had no frames molded in it. I might just use the messed up one. (All this might not even matter if I sell it next weekend). I have a long build list, and might actually skip this one, or not. [/quote

You would think they would want to get at least some return on their investment rather than just putting it on a shelf to collect dust.

RE: Air or electric for big bird retracts?
Depending on what you are building you may not have a choice unless you plan to build your own retracts. Electric retracts are not that common and you may have a tough time finding what you need unless it is a very generic set of gear.

RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
Barry, Wing skin and 1/64" plywood are one and the same. On a Corsair as big as yours I would probably go ahead and use fabric covering for a scale appearance but you could simulate it too, whichever you prefer. On the big birds the parts are large enough that building them strong and straight becomes much less of a problem so the additional strength provided by the ply would not be absolutely necessary. That's my .02 cents anyway! :)

RE: Royal Kits
ORIGINAL: scale dail Then a ROYAL Ki-61 sr...
Hi Dail, I'm flying a very similar sized Ki-61 of my own design, 71" span. I still have to detail and paint it but need to get the Hellcat done first. What do you think of the canopy in your Ki-61 kit? If it looks relatively accurate I may see if I can find one for my Tony. If it fits it would save me from having to spend the time finishing my plug. If the Royal flies anything like mine does you will love it. Mine is a tad under 10 pounds as it sits now and flies like a trainer other than being just a tad squirrily on the ground. RE: TFGE F4U Corsair 60 Kit Build
The fabric covered surfaces on the full size Corsair have very little "scalop" to them and don't really look all that different from the surrounding metal save for the tapes and stitches and less sheen to the paint. These are easily duplicated on the solid plywood surface to give the illusion of fabric covering. The plywood skinning on the parts is 1/64" wing skin and adds very little to the finished weight. RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build
A quick update for those guys waiting on kits. I ran into a few issues with the cowl plugs which I needed to rectify in order to achieve a quality part. I've got that done and hope to finish up the cowls and canopies tomorrow. Once that is complete there are a few minor wood parts to finish up and the kits will be ready to ship. If you ordered hardware your kits will not ship until the hardware arrives as previously discussed. This, of course, does not apply to local purchasers and I will get your kits to you as soon as the parts are done. I apologize for the delays but they should be done before the end of this week. Also, I would like to clarify that Tighe (Tko310) is working ahead of the group and without the aid of any instructions. This is a good thing in that he is finding any stumbling blocks or issues which I may have missed. Once the kits are delivered and the group build gets under way I will use the info gleaned from both my build and Tighe's build to put together a recommended construction sequence which will be covered step by step on the web site. So, lest anyone think that they are already falling behind, don't sweat it!

RE: I need Help finding canopy P47 and P51 1/3
You Jug with a wing span of 104 inches is about 1:4.7 scale. Much closer to 1/5 scale than to 1/3! Whatever the origins of the airplane the Meister canopy would work nicely I would think.

RE: Will 1/6 Scale P-47 Accessories fit the Giant TF P-47???
The Top Flite bird is 1:5.76 scale based on the span so I would say 1:6 is as close as your going to get and I'm sure they would look just fine.

Actually the fuselage is not entirely sheeted, there are lightening holes cut into the sides aft of the wing saddle. This is one sweet flying airplane by the way. The Midwest Texan is very close to 1/6 scale. For my money the best pilot busts available in terms of detail, weight, and price come from Pete's Pilots in the UK. Below is a link to Pete's Ebay shop. Even coming from the UK these pilot busts are among the cheapest available. Great stuff and highly recommended. http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Petes-Pilots__W0QQ_armrsZ1

RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build
The scale prop is ~19.5 inches in diameter and I don't think there is anything you're going to stick up there that will turn that large of a three blader except MAYBE an electric power system! I'm looking at the possibility of either electric or the RCS 17cc gasser for my next Hellcat. Whatever you decide on if there is a chance of your Hellcat ending up much heavier than 10 pounds I would definitely suggest you look into the Sierra retracts and stay away from the Robart units, especially if you fly off of grass or dirt. One of my local flying buddies is going to build a Hellcat for warbird racing and will be putting a YS 1.40 up front. To that end I have re-designed the wing slightly to take a 1/4" plywood dihedral brace so the extra weight and power of some of the engines being considered here should not be a concern.

RE: Zero history question??
Swampyankee is correct. This particular Zero was a captured aircraft that was painted up in spurious Japanese markings. Here is a pic of a model of the aircraft depicting it prior to the addition of some of the artwork on the tail. The red cowl flaps are correct as can be seen in the background of this pic. Still, it would be scale on a model and looks quite attractive to my eye.
