RE: mechanism for making a retractable tailhook on Hellcat?
ORIGINAL: DaveGee That brings up an interesting question about the full sized Hellcat tailhooks. I am guessing that it was hinged just as mine is that makes it hang straight down outside of the fuse. I don't know if there were any springs or anything to make it stay that way, or if just the weight of it was sufficient.
There is a spring on the full size.

RE: mechanism for making a retractable tailhook on Hellcat?
Keep in mind that the 4" measurement is for the small scale foamy. The larger the scale the longer the distance becomes. On my 1/8 scale Hellcat the distance would be ~5.25 inches and on my 1/6 scale Hellcat I would need 7 inches of travel.

RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build
Fordy, Below is a scrap view of the modified plan showing the flap fix. Basically it is a simple matter of changing the angle of the pin that ties the inboard and outboard flaps together so that it is parallel to the hinge line of the flap rather than angled as shown originally. If you compare the drawing below to your plans you will quickly spot the change. I've finished the flap mod on my #2 airplane on one side and am close to being finished with the second. I am taking pictures of the process on the second side for inclusion on the web site. It is my sincere hope to make substantial progress on #2 over the summer months. However, I've said that numerous times now and each time some other "squeeky wheel" keeps me from working on it. However, if anyone needs info on any steps not yet covered on the web site please don't hesitate to send me an email. I have many, many pictures that I have taken while building both airplanes and would be happy to share them via email if they will help somebody to maintain progress on their Hellcat. I will do my utmost to get the flaps finished and the web site updated over the next 3-4 weeks. Not only do you have to move the hook its entire length but also it has to swing down when it reaches the limit of its travel. I considered doing this on my 1/8 scale Hellcat but I could not come up with any light and simple solution. I will be interested in your results Dave.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Making anything accurately resembling a Mk.VIII out of the Yellow kit would be a pretty steep challenge in my opinion. However, if scale accuracy is not of great importance then I would add that there are many very nice Mk.VIII paint jobs which would look stunning on the Mk.XIV airframe.

Bob
Thanks for checking in AB Bob. While it may appear as though we have invested a great deal of money in the project appearances can be deceiving. The Sierra main gear came with another project that we purchased from the classifieds right here at RCU at a significantly reduced price. I sold off the rest of the package but kept the main gear for this project. The robart tail wheel unit was gifted to me by a friend for doing some CAD design work. The DaVinci wheels I actually won as part of a magazine promotion! First time I ever won anything. That was one of the main reasons this project was pushed to the front burner, because we kind of stumbled into all the necessary components by accident!

My opinion, for what it's worth, would be line it up with the plan and make sure it's level and glue it in place. Quite honestly if you're off on the incidence at all it isn't going to be much and will not effect flight in any significant way.

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
ORIGINAL: CorsairJock Some events allow aircraft to be in any scheme, as long as the original design of the aircraft was for military purposes. Want to talk about gray areas? How about the Boing 707: originally designed for mid-air refueling (KC-135), LATER evolved into airliner. So would a United Airlines 707 be appropriate? Same can be said for some other airliners.
I'm not sure I agree that the 707 was developed from the KC-135 to begin with. Both aircraft were developments of the 367-80 and I think Boeing had intentions of developing the design into an airliner as well as an aerial refueler from the very beginning. Even if I'm wrong on that point I would say that it's moot since the chances of somebody showing up at your next warbird event with a 707 are pretty slim!

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
ORIGINAL: Ron101 But he had a good point.... if we allow any warbird in any scheme,,, what if a yellow piper cub shows up? it did fly in WII but was olive drab with stars and bars
See JeffH's post above for what I think is a good solution. Any aircraft initially built for the civilian market and then impressed into military use should have to wear military colors as that is the only connection it has to the warbird arena. An aircraft such as your Mustang, designed specifically for military use, has a warbird connection not matter what paint scheme simply because it was intended as a military machine from the start. I realize there may be a few aircraft that fall into a gray area based on this criteria but I don't think it would be enough to cause any real problems. My .02 cents anyway.

Inspiration Point
I'm guessing that I am like a lot of designers and builders in that I keep files on potential projects as I run across them, adding to the files as new information is found. At this point my potential projects list is such that it would take a dozen life times for me to complete them all. I thought it might be interesting to start a thread and share some of those subjects that I really like but most likely will never get a chance to build in the hopes of possibly inspiring somebody else. I encourage others to do the same and let's just see what develops. No hard-fast rules here but this is not really a thread about kits or plans that you will never get to. Rather let's concentrate on subjects for which no kit or plan readily exists that you think would make a good scale model. I will lead off with one that I just came across yesterday and which I had never heard of prior to that. Designed as a long range racer, and developed into a high-speed bomber, it looks like somebody stuck some left over WW1 bomber wings on a Gee Bee QED. The undercambered airfoil is of particular note. Anyway, I think it is an interesting design which has great potential to be a good flying model. Let me know what you think and show me your favorite obscure subjects. RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I think Jeff's solution is perfect and is exactly the way I would run a warbird event such as this. If the airplane was designed for military intent then I would allow it no matter what the paint scheme. If it is a civilian type that has been pressed into military service then it needs to be in a military style finish. Just my .02 cents of course but I think this solution perfectly addresses the issue and maximizes the allowable types that fit the spirit of a warbird only event. And Gohmer needs to reconsider posting on days when he apparently got out of the bed on the wrong side.

RE: 1/6 Scale Hellcat
Progress has been slow on the Hellcat as my brother and his wife recently sold their house and he has been doing some minor renovations so that they can finalize the sale. I have been completely inundated with other work which has kept me out of the shop much of the time. We did get a little work done on the new horizontal stab which was turning out very nicely. I say was because I discovered an error today that is going to result in me having to design and build a third horizontal stab! A somewhat embarassing development which I'm only sharing to illustrate some of the pitfalls of designing what we hope will be a competition level model. We had completed the stab up to the point of adding the tips which I was doing today when I noticed that it seemed much too fat. Sure enough comparing my stab with the scale drawings indicated that I did not have near enough taper (as viewed from head on) to match the full size. I assumed that the horizontal stab used the same airfoil from root to tip, as does every other airplane I have ever designed, but that is not the case with the Hellcat. I will now be designing yet another stab, this one with the proper progressive airfoil section. You can be sure I will be very certain to pay attention to the drawings from here on out! I did make some progress on the vertical fin which, thus far, appears like it will work nicely as designed!
