RE: OS 46 FX rattle noise
Going along with what he said, I have seen a few like this and they had too much prop, The fix was a smaller either by diameter or pitch or both, but don't rule out bearings.
ORIGINAL: William Robison UandA: Strange as it seems, it is possible to have detonation at part throttle and not at full. Just for a test, try a 10x6 prop in place of your 10x7 and see if it changes. If it improves, the 10x6 is well withing the acceptable range of props for the engine, just leave it on or go to an 11x5 and try that. Bill.
RE: How do you measure wind speed with a spinning prop on a pole?
Now this is good stuff Heres one to measure speed of a plane. Take a stop watch and clock the time it takes for your plane to go from one end to the other and it goes like this. You have a 700ft runway and it takes you 8 seconds to goe the distance 700ft runway div by 8sec = 87.5 ft per sec. 87.5 x 60 x60 = 315000 315000 div 5280 = 59.65 mph FYI the 60 x 60 is 60 sec in a minute and 60 min in an hour. 5280 is a mile

RE: My club wants to have a 80 MPH Speed limit
Leverage is also a neat thing. Is the property you fly on belong to the club or lease or belong to the city making it a public field????? They may not have the authority to do what they are doing. If its a public field then propose a new club? Just to **&^%them off.

RE: JR vs Futaba
Many pilots go with the flow. I am a Futaba person. But our local IMACC group are all JR which for them make things easier when one has a problem or adjustment to make and flying those precision manuevers this is a plus. I am just simple humble hotrodder with warbirds propjets. They are both an excellent brand. Now my buddy has a 9C and I am not sure how this is done but it is JR compatible. I'm sure somebody here can answer this one. As far as the 9c, get a campac and it will double the amount of planes on the radio. I have the 8UAFS which is where the 9C came from. Now programming it is not bad but can get silly. I built a plane for a friend and he bought a new 9C and asked me to get the plane on it. The programming on the 9C is so simple I did not even need the book. I though it was great. I wish I needed one instead of wanting one.

RE: What Should the Head Temp. be on my OS 46AX?
Right now owning a temp guage is as usless as a roll of flightline. Everybody is sucking these things up with absolutely no standards at all from the engine manufacturers. They are a ridiculous tool and a waste of money at this time. It gives you a number which you have nothing to compare too! For example you get done with a flight, aim the idiot tool at the head and it tells you 300degrees. Well so what. You don't know if thats good or bad. If the engine gets to hot in flight, your going to know it whenyou lose power and you land with the throttle stick full forward barely at an idle. You know what we really need is tire balancer. I do fly most of my planes on full throttle from the moment I lift off until its time to land. I have been doing this for years at altitude and 90plus degrees and they all run fine. If the engine gets hot there is something wrong with your set up and 99.9% of the time its running to lean for which there are many reasons why and a temp guage is not going to help you. You want to get your engine running like a swiss watch? Since you have a Somthing Extra, I assume your engine is exposed and easy to get to. Tune it in as best you can. Now while the engine is running, carefully pull the fuel line off the carb. If the rpm increase before the engine dies, your low end is to rich. If the rpm just goes down and dies, your low end is to lean. I go for a slight increase. This is not a barnyard trick and is in some manuals that most people overlook. I spend an extra couple minutes doing this on each plane I fly and they rung fine the rest of the day. Sorry but I am not going to rely on a temp guage to tell me if my engine is too rich or lean. Who ever is is filling you full of it.

RE: Jett 90 in F-4 question
I have the Jett .50 and .90 . Airgar is relating to the F-4 for speed. Your Corsair is still going to move right along with a 12/8 or 13/8. You know I have a couple warbirds that are engine overpowered. I just pick out a prop and fly it. I would stick a 13/ 8 on it, come by for a low pass and then go vertical. If it hold well, keep it. If not, drop down a tad
ORIGINAL: daven I'm not thrilled with this post. I have a Jett .90 that I am currently installing on a Hangar 9 Corsair. I was hoping I could start with a 13x6 and go to a 12x8 or 11X9 at some point. If you are only turning 13,900 with a 12x6 I am very concerned. That seems low...??? Any other Jett .90 owners out there? Is that the Torque, or Speed version?
RE: Saito 100, 14x8 prop - 8800 rpm tach?
I am right around in this area as Robison says. I am running a 13/10 for a while but have a 13/13 pattern prop in the bag when I'm ready. Its a bit nerve racking too. I am use to 15,16,18,000 rpms screaming along at over 100mph. Now Ihave this Saito 100 and around the 8800 rpm area. The sound alone is nice but strange yet I am still cruising at over 100mph. Takes some getting use to.
ORIGINAL: William Robison MN4S: At first glance, no, it doesn't seem right. But the FA-100 is a long stroke engine, it might be you need to use a higher pitch prop and run it at a lower rpm to get the advantage of the slightly larger displacement. Red line rpm on the FA-100 is, after all, 1000 rpm lower than the FA-91. Bill.
RE: Saito 100, 14x8 prop - 8800 rpm tach?
This castor oil stain. will it hurt anything or does it need to be removed every once in a while. Never really noticed it on all my 2 strokes
ORIGINAL: Sport_Pilot I didn't notice he was at a high altitude. That may accout for about 3/4 of the 1000 or so RPM loss. The guy from NS is confusing rust with castor oil stain. It is much worse on a four stroke because it is not cleaned off with each run. On a two stroke the fuel is moving through the crankcase and keeps castor from congealing on the sides. It may be seen on the bearing retainers where it is often confused with rust. On a four stroke it can litterally cover every part. If Horizon didn't clean it off it's not rust.
RE: Saito 100, 14x8 prop - 8800 rpm tach?
I am going to catch it for this one. "Need For Speed" I am one state down and also at 5000ft. I have only one maiden flight on mine a couple weeks back and as I recall my rpms at the time were around 9000rpm with a 13/10. The weather as you know has kept me from the field for a couple weeks. This weekend I will take it out again and get better details. I have it mounted to a .40 size Miss America P51 and it went like a rocket! One thing I am noticing here is your getting answers on performance from people who are at around sea level. You are not going to come close to what they have at all. The guy with the rust? It looks to me like Nova Scotia where the humidity and salt air is very high and that eats up and corrodes metal to no end. I think your engine is fine for where you are. I have talked with people here before and when I tell them what I get for performance with a certain setup, they think something is wrong when with this altitude, its the best i can get. Don't look for trouble when there is not any. YOu take the combination of a The Zero with bad aerodynamics, A nice engine but at high altitude, You are not going to get the performance the guys down lower are getting. Stuff that thing in a P51 like I did and watch what happens. Take care, The Cheese.

I have hadmine about a year and at least 100 flights and nothing. But I think i will give the gear a looking over just in case. Of course i land on asphalt and my landings are generally smooth. My guess is those who land on anything other like grass would be a bit hard on the gear.

RE: How do you warm up your engine?
I usually start it up, dial it in run it for a couple minutes or so then redial again. The adjustments are going to change from the first start up becasue the engine is cold and metals and o rings change from the heat. To me, a few minutes of this sets me up for the rest of the day.

RE: Your most memorable R/C moments
One morning this lady in her late 30's came out to the field with her son about 10 years old. They had a plane ready for the boys first training flight. While the kid was out with a trainer , small talk told us she was a 747 pilot along with her husband who was out on a run somewhere. They only had time for one flight when it was time to go. They packed up their stuff, said thanks and headed out of the parking lot and down the road. Now a couple miles of road is visible from the airfield. She was not out of the parking lot more than a couple seconds when I turned around to look back and nothing!. Completely gone! At the same time I saw my buddy's van coming up about a mile down the road. When he got here we asked him if he saw anybody pass him coming in and he saw nothing and there was no place at all for them to turn off either. Whoaaaaaaaa![X(]

RE: IMAA
One thing here is we have the qualifying planes and many of them. What I don't know and working on is a number of IMAA registered pilots. Getting a straight Big Bird event would be easy and with an abundance of participation. Getting an event for registered IMAAers is a big guess. Seems many have problems justifying the AMA, never mind IMAA. I mean our local club has over a hundred members which is 1/10 of the local AMA registered. Half of those members have a combination of or both 1/4 scale and 80inch. but why should they go IMAA.What a mess.

GS MIss America (Right Retracts?)
Last fall I purchased one of the original versions with the weaker retracts. I called up Airborne and he asked me to send the old ones in and he'll send me new ones for the cost of shipping-$5. All went fine. Now the plane has been finished for a couple months now but not flown. Anyways, these are much larger in size than the ones I sent back which means a total rebuild of the retract mounts. They also have that neat little spring on the outside and work well in my hand. Do I have the right set?

Pulls my Shoestring really well. Actually very well here at altitude. I would stay away from the warbirds with this one because they tend to be a bit heavier. Midget Mustang is another good choice.

I know you seem to be set on an arf prop jet. But there are a handful of 40 size arf planes that with the right combination or engines and such will give that propjet a very impressive run. You can aske me, Airgar or Flyboy Dave.

RE: magnum 46 settings
Open the barrel to an approximate idle position. Open the high end a couple turns or so. Close the low end needle completely. Put a piece of fuel tubing on the nipple of the carb. Now, at the same time-blow into the tube and open the low end until you here a hissing noise. This will give you a ball park area for the low end.
