RE: Help to absoulte newbie!
You really cannot go wrong with the Savage, E-Maxx or E-Revo. They are fun to bash around, they can take some decent abuse and the parts are readily available. I am more of a nitro guy than electric but, in your situation, I would recomend going with an electric (brushed or brushless). Having nitro shipped to a remote area can be a pain in the rear end. If you can get someone to ship it to you, it will likely be expensive.

I doubt it is ruined. I would pull the cooling head off of it and put some oil in the piston/sleeve though.

RE: s5 l2g break in
I used the heat cycle but it took at least a gallon before my S3 L2G started running consistant. It was one of the most difficult break ins I've ever done. Good engine, just a pain to break in.

Check out DE Racing. They have a set of 3 rear skid plates for the Jammin for 7 bucks. Free shipping too. You can find them on Ebay or their website which I believe is www.deracing.com

Just couldn't pass it up
A couple of years ago, I got a Matrix and raced it two or three times before turning it over to my son while I race my truggy. Since then, I've wanted another buggy but was waiting for the right deal to come along. This week, that deal was put in front of me and I couldn't resist. One of my friends had an MBX5 that he raced twice. He offered it to me for 300 bucks. This included a new JR9000T for steering and new ACE DS1015 for T/B. Now it may not be the Prospec or the MBX5R but, seeing as I'm only club racing, I think this will do just fine. Good thing I had an extra Jammin JPX .21, JP2 pipe and spektrum receiver in my box 'o stuff. I really think this is turning into a serious illness. Maybe I should join a support group. [:D]

RE: this is all i think...
When I got my first RC a few years ago, I bought an off brand monster truck just to bash around the back yard. I told a few of my friends that had trucks and buggies that they were insane for "wasting" extreme amounts of money for aftermarket race engines, high end servos and better radios for racing. Now, after having spent countless amounts of money on a truggy, 2 buggies, a revo, better radio systems, 4 race engines and servos, I understand the addiction now. All of my buds that I gave a hard time to, have turned it around on me and give me a hard time as often as possible. Thank God my wife is cool about all the money I spend on RC parts. [:)]

RE: RB Engine ?
Aside from several garbage RTR engines, I have had an OS .21 VG (junk) and run an OS XZ28, Jammin JPX .28 and .21. The RB is definately one of my favorites though. What nitro % are you running on your S3? The reason I ask is when I was trying to tune mine at about a half gallon, I noticed that mine had 2 shims under the cooling head. I emailed RB and asked how many shims I should run for 20%. They said that the engine was shimmed for 25% to 30% nitro and that I should remove one 1mm shim for that content. It did help with tunning but like I said before, it really didn't wake up til it hit the gallon mark. Glad to see you don't seem to have any issues with yours.
ORIGINAL: vladconnery Chopped, Well I guess I lucked out mine is making alot of power early. Thats also realative to what I am used to a XTM .247. So for me early on I knew I hit the Jackpot. This thing idles like a car. Glad your experience turned out good in the end. Seems everyone is saying the same thing after a gallon Hold on to your shorts. I am equally impressed by the ease of starting. I had to heat mine with a hairdryer the 1st time after that. Give it a bump and she's purring. What other motors have you owned?
RE: RB Engine ?
I run mine at 240 to 250. I would get a bit nervous if it hit 300. Just my opinion. They really don't wake up until you get a gallon through it. Break in went smooth but until I hit the gallon mark, I was wondering if I had wasted my money because it didn't seem to make much power and wouldn't hold a tune. Now that its got about a gallon and a half through it, I am really impressed with RB's quality and power. It fires up easy, idles perfect and I rarely have to even touch the needles now.

RE: RB S3 L2G
I have the S3 L2G in my sons buggy. It broke in easily but was a bit hard to find the right tune until I got a little over a gallon through it. Now, it runs perfectly and has plenty of power for the smaller tracks we run on. I'm thinking about getting the S7 for myself now. Once you get through the first gallon, you won't be dissapointed.

RE: jpx .28 os .28
I have both and can say that they both have crazy bottom end but the OS seems to pull better on top. Either way, unless you are running on a big track, both engines have way more power than you will need. I should also note that both the OS and Jammin have run perfectly for me so whichever one you choose, you should be happy.

RE: revving high
If the opening in your carb gets smaller as you apply the brake, thats the reason for the high idle. Remove the linkage from your throttle/brake servo, turn your radio and reciever on. Set the throttle trim on your radio at zero and re-install the linkage where the carb opening is at its smallest opening. If your radio has end point adjustments, you may have to adjust them as well. If that doesn't take care of the problem, try adjusting the idle adjustment screw on the carb. It should be located at the base of the carb. Hope this helps.

Check to make sure your throttle is closing all the way. You may just have to adjust your throttle linkage.

RE: engine temps
I just started race tuning my sons RB S3 L2G with the 2020 pipe and have found that it runs best at around 220 to 240 degrees. I'm running Byrons Gen 2 20% though and pulled one .1 shim out of the head. I haven't been able to really test it on the track yet.

RE: Best New Motor Break-in Technique
I am no expert on breaking in engines but after doing it to several engines so far, I have found that heat cycling has worked the best for me. My first couple of break in's I did, I followed the manufacturers recomendations (not saying that they are wrong) but never got the longevity that I expected out of those engines. Since I have been heat cycling, I have had little to no issues with my mills and they are all still running strong. I think that keeping your temps at or a little over 200 degrees and having patience is the most important part of the break in process. Its just a little boring. Like, watching paint dry. [:D]

RE: Holeshots or Crimefighters??
The holeshots will be better suited for hard packed dirt/clay. If you are running a loose dirt track, crimefighters, bowties, gators, komodos etc... will grip better.

RE: is the O.S 21vg a good engine?
zjwhitrock, I have owned a VG. I can tell you that the original piston and sleeve lasted 2 gallons. It did run good but didn't last long. I replaced the p/s and put maybe a half gallon through it before I sold it. I decided not to take the chance of only getting a couple gallons through it before I had to replace the p/s again. I bought the RB S3 L2G last week and have it mostly broken in. So far, the difference is night and day between the VG and the RB. The break in went smoother with the RB than the VG and it starts alot easier. I have a little over a half gallon through it now so I'm just finding the right race tune for it. Go with the RB. You won't be dissapointed. Although, others will probably post good experiences with their VG's. There is someone here that has gotten several gallons through their VG with no problems at all. I am just not a fan of the ABL liner OS is using for the VG line of engines. Good luck.

RE: Got a new engine today
I saw that everyone has them on backorder. Amain has the engine/pipe combos of just about all of the RB engines. I originally wanted just the engine as I have a few extra pipes laying around but couldn't get one uless I got the combo. I'm glad I did buy it seeing as the pipe is matched for that engine. I will try some different pipes on it once it is fully broken in. Got all the JP's and a few OS pipes to play around with.

RE: Got a new engine today
Got about a half gallon on the RB now and its slowly starting to wake up. The pinch is really tight so I'm guessing that it will take a gallon or so of fuel to really get it track ready. The temps have been at 200 to 215 consitantly and idles perfect. So far, this has been the easiest break in I have ever done. I may have to get an RB for my truggy now.[:D]

RE: 22 stiches thanks to 2 cars hitting me!
I feel your pain. About 2 months ago, I was turn marshaling for my son during the 1/8th scale buggy A main when I ran out to flip a car and didn't see another buggy coming up on me. The car hit a jump at almost full speed and hit my left leg just below my knee. I was wearing jeans but the shock tower split my leg wide open. (jeans still intact)[&:] Now, I didnt need as many stitches as you did but man, that hurt!! I thought I was hit by Sammy Sosa swinging a Louisville slugger. The ER staff thought it was really funny that a "toy car" caused that much damage requiring stitches. Needless to say, I am way more aware of my surroundings now when I go out to marshal a race. Lesson learned. Get well soon. [:D]
