Test stand, tools and props for sale
Moderator: I'd put this in the classified section but I feel that most of it is specific to scale racing. - Hey guys, I cleaned out my garage this weekend. I still have a few airplane related things I have not unloaded yet. First up, I have a break in/test stand that I built. The mounts are machined from 2x4x.25" aluminum tubing. They are set up for 46 sized motors (with clamps), YS mid blocks(bolt pattern 91-115), and YS big blocks (bolt pattern 120-170). There is one side that has not been machined yet. The base is solid Maple. I also have the following available: Hobbico covering iron Hangar 9 Digital load meter Great planes metric prop reamer Hangar 9 glow plug wrench Hangar 9 Pro Z bend pliers Not pictured - 2 Dave Brown Six Shooter fuel pumps. They are used but have new rebuilds or kits with them. One at $5 without holster, one at $10 with holster. Finally, I have a couple 13x11 and 14x14 APC props. If you are interested in any of it please let me know. I'd rather sell it to someone who can use it than throw it away. Thanks, Chris

RE: SAM's Big Kahuna, April 1st
Heat is your friend when disassembling motors. Bearings will fall out, sleeves that are seemingly welded into a case slide out, drive washers that have been over tightened on collets magically pop right off. I've had that same battery terminal puller for at least 15 years and it still works fine. I know the feeling on the use of flame in the garage. At one point I had 3-4 cases of 60% fuel, K sized rocket motors, automotive paint and black powder in my garage.

RE: SAM's Big Kahuna, April 1st
I've been rebuilding motors for 15 years or so. I have a battery terminal puller from Sears that I use to pull drive washers. I put it on and tension the puller, then hit the washer with a propane torch. It will pop right off. That one from Central looks like a POS. Get one that squeezes the arms together as it pulls, like this: [link]http://www.summitracing.com/parts/OTC-4611[/link] Good luck, Chris

RE: Any interest in a machined SS straight header for YS?
Thanks for the vote of confidence guys. I do miss seeing alot of you but getting back into flying would be pretty hard for me right now. Jacob and I are having fun racing cars though. It has taken me quite a while to get up to speed, but I qualified 2nd out of 25 4wd Short Course trucks over the weekend. My times are getting competitive and I'm having fun. Jacob is getting better. He still drives like the throttle is an on/off switch though. in January a friend that I used to race boats with and his boys started racing with us. Our wives have known each other since grade school and the boys have known each other all their lives. They're having fun racing and playing together at the track. My poor father-in-law has tried to lure all of his grandkids into flying and none of them are interested.

Hey Guys, Jimmy Skids finally prodded me enough to get another batch of headers made. If you are in the Sacramento area RC Country will be stocking them. Jimmy will also have them for sale at SAMS. If you are outside the Sacramento and you would like to purchase one please contact me via PM. Thanks, Chris

RE: Wing profiles
I used a NACA 66012 on my YS110 powered Strega a couple years ago. The plane picked up about 10mph over the stock wing. You might want a little camber in the airfoil you could try a 66212 instead.

APC 9.5x6 is generally the fastest. APC 10x5 can be fast if you're very smooth and fly right on the pylons.

RE: Selling my Gold/Unlimited/120 Warbird
He likes the trucks, but he's not a very good driver yet. I have to turn the EPA on his throttle down to keep him from crashing into every wall on the course. I actually took the EPA knob off his radio so he couldn't turn it back up when I'm not looking. He really likes marshaling and sweeping the track between heats. It's funny, because getting him to clean up his toys is like pulling teeth. [8|]

RE: Selling my Gold/Unlimited/120 Warbird
Thanks guys, We're running SC10 short course trucks ATM. I'm running the new Castle SCT motor and ESC. Steve Neu helped out on the design and its the first 4 pole RC car motor in a ROAR legal can. It's got a ton of power. I'm getting my butt handed to me at the track. Most of these guys race 3-4 times a month. I'm improving though, I managed to get 3-4 laps more per heat than what I managed the first couple times I went out. I was actually out in the lead of the B main for a few laps this weekend, but made a couple mistakes and wound up 5th. Take it easy, Chris

Selling my Gold/Unlimited/120 Warbird
Hey Guys, I started racing RC cars with my son and just don't have the time or money for two RC hobbies right now. I'm interested in selling my WM Mustang. It is set up for Gold/Unlimited/120 racing. The motor mount will accept any big block YS 120-170. It has a Stilleto canopy and the belly scoop has been removed. It also has Hobbico retracts instead of the WM units. I can sell it as a bare airframe, with servos and battery, with motor, or as a RTF racer. I ran a YS 140 L in it last year and the motor is for sale too. It needs a new head as a glow plug element burned the exhaust valve seat. I can sell it as is or I can put a new head on it. I also have a few 14" props that I can include. I also have 4 gallons of Nitro, a gallon of synthetic oil, a gallon of methanol, a few different mixed gallons of YS fuel, starter box, Dynatron starter, RCATS glow driver, etc. Please send me a PM if you are interested in anything. Thanks, Chris

RE: Warbird Race - Morgan Hill, CA - October 2nd
I tried rubbing compound, but the grooves where the element burned into the seats were just too deep. I need to make a lap and use some lapping compound. [:o] My son and I went to our first RC Offroad race in Union City. I had some setup issues with my truck but we had a great time. I'm just happy to get him involved in something we can do together. Good to hear you guys had fun. I ran into Babe and Rick Maida at the Salinas Airshow yesterday. They told me the turnout was pretty good. Chris

RE: Warbird Race - Morgan Hill, CA - October 2nd
Well, I'm out. I went out today and got one semi-decent run and then the motor started acting up. After working on it 2-3 hours at the field I brought it hoem and tore it down. I managed to burn a glow plug and the wire embeded itself into the exhaust valve seat. The valve wouldn't seal so I pulled it out. I tried to lap the valve but I don't have any compund and the auto parts store was out too. I'm pretty disappointed with all the work I have thrown into this motor with so little to show for it. [:o] Oh well. I hope you all have a great time. Chris

If you decide to use a drill or Dremel I would use toothpaste. Lapping compound will be too abrasive. Lapping compound also tends to embed into aluminum. Good luck, Chris

RE: YS F-120 Low Compression?
+1 on ThumbSkull's suggestion to get it in a plane or on a stand and get some fuel in it. Once you get it started and run it the compression will (probably) come back up.

MONGO, Best of luck with your surgery. At least you'll get some "flying" in. [;)] That'd be cool if Richard shows up. I'm sure he'll wax my tail though. I think I'm going to be an also ran this weekend. The 140 just isn't making the kind of power I'd hoped for. I'm going to try a couple more tweaks on Friday. Hopefully one of them will work. Chris

Just the springs Terry. 170 intake valve springs 140 DZ piston 140 DZ rod 160 DZ wrist pin, solid pin, cut down .050" on each end. You could cut the teflon retainers down instead if you don't have access to a lathe.

RE: RCPRO Warbird race - Hesperia, CA - September 18th
Well, I cured part of my problem. On Ray's advice I used 170 intake valve springs on both valves. They are alot stiffer than the 140 springs were. That seems to have cured my burbling problem in flight and should let the motor wind up more in the air. However, I was down 100-200 rpm from what I had seen before. The DZ piston did not make as much power as the FZ piston even though I'm running 10% higher compression. The DZ piston is open on the bottom like a standard piston vs the spool shape on the FZ and doesn't make as much boost pressure. I bumped the compression up another 10% and I'll try again on Friday afternoon. I had a problem after the first flight. I changed prop and fuel and the motor wouldn't run worth a crap. I went back to my original setup and it still ran like crap. I opened up the regulator and cleaned it out. No improvement. I took the motor out of the plane, removed the back plate and found that the disk valve had come loose. I reset the clearance and the motor ran fine again, but I lost my regulator setting. The motor seems to want at die at an idle now. Hopefully on Friday I will have some time to work it out.

What prop are you running on it? 11X8? If Jett's numbers are correct (15,000) that's about 1000 more than the OS 75s are turning that prop and they are right around break out in the WM Mustangs. That should give you a little margin. [;)]
