RE: Martin Baker MB.5 Refurbish
[quote]ORIGINAL: lovetoflyguy Now there was a rather large hatch that allowed access to two cannons on each wing. I simulated this by using .010 G-10 fiberglass sheets you can get from Frank Tiano. This stuff works awesome because you can cut it with a blade or scissors. After I got the correct size, I was able to glue that in place and then I used #0 screws and yes had to counter sink every one of those little guys! [/quote] Hi lovetoflyguy, Wow, I love how all the details show up thanks to the weathering! Awesome model!!! I'll try to copy as much as possible of your work and ideas on my 1/6,5-scale Tempest Mk. V. (But I'm sure it will never look as good as yours....) I have 0,2 mm and 0,4 mm fiberglass sheets, going to simulate hatches as you did. But what glue did you use? A friend told me he never has succeed to glue fiberglass sheets...... Cheers Christer Landberg

Most of them are from the book "THE RAF WWII LOGBOOKS of Wing Commander R.P. Beamont". Good luck with future flights! Christer Landberg www.hawkertempest.se PS. RE: KMP New Spitfire Mk XIV
Thanks for all nice comments on my make-over-Spitfire! (I'll try to add some comments on the web page asap.) And I do agree with Alan, no mods is really needed on this model. It's a master-piece built out of the box, and a friend who already has flew his Spitfire for 6 months, LOVES it! And he did no mods at all. But I thought mine needed a cockpit, retractable tail-wheel and a few other details. It's all up to the builder! Cheers! Christer Landberg

RE: KMP New Spitfire Mk XIV
Thanks Ian! Yes, I didn't like cutting the mainspar but added two hardwood spars (clearly seen in the photo). 6 x 10 mm as I remember, and they are running all the way between the two inner ribs in the tailplane. That's why I made the hole a little large, to get them in! The tailwheel is listed [link=http://www.unitracts.co.uk/full_prices.html]here[/link] under "Other retracts/Tailwheel (mechanical)". It's actually the Tempest type (retracting forward) from my never-ending Tempest project, but was possible to use anyway. Cheers, Christer

RE: KMP New Spitfire Mk XIV
This is how I did on my Spitfire. I used a Du-Bro elevator joiner and a carbon pushrod. I have also opened up the fuselage and added a Mick Reeves instrument panel and some details. Pilot is an Elite Force. More details will be added later! A tail wheel retract mechanism from Unitracts and pull-pull cable for the rudder. RE: Scale Lights on Hawker Tempest
Hi Chris, On a Hawker Tempest it's only the light under the port wing which can be swing down. (Although there are Tempest models around which have both of them lowered...) Have a look at your Bentley drawings again, in the front view it's only the port one shown down. The red & green lights in the starboard wing are fixed and were used for signalling/identification: Id lights (starboard wing): [image]http://www.hawkertempest.se/walkarounds/nv778cl-26.jpg[/image] Retractable landing light (port wing): [image]http://www.hawkertempest.se/walkarounds/nv778cl-12.jpg[/image] [image]http://user.tninet.se/~yct679b/la607-8.jpg[/image] Yes, you have also two lights on each side of the fin, close to the elevators: [image]http://user.tninet.se/~qsq272p/pr536cl-30.jpg[/image] More photos? RE: Tempest flaps question
Thanks Chuck and Ian for your replys. I think my concern about the bellcranks arise from my Brian Taylor Tempest. They didn't work out (or I didn't work them out...) and I chose to exclude the flaps. But now everything is larger so I'll probably go for the bellcranks with use of ball links and a large single servo. (Listen to the designer [sm=wink.gif]!!) Read the review in SRCI on Skyshark's Avenger where they first used Y-pushrods and got uneven moments and lots of play. No, I'll go for the bellcranks! /Christer [link=http://user.tninet.se/~ytm843e/tempest.htm]The Hawker Tempest Page[/link]

Tempest flaps question
Hi guys! I'm building a 75" Tempest Mk. V from Ian Baileys plans ([link=http://user.tninet.se/~ytm843e/bailey.htm]Ian Bailey project[/link]). Made some modifications to the flaps, to achive a more scale-look: I took two Robart 3/16" Super Hinge Points and separated them. The holes were enlarged to accept short pieces of brass tubes (3/32" inner dia.): [image]http://user.tninet.se/~yct679b/bailey-54.jpg[/image] The flaps are made of 1/16" ply, four notches are cut where the hinges will be. Three pieces of 1/4" carbon fiber tubes are glued with Slow-Zap along the leading edge. Pieces of 3/32" brass tubes are epoxied inside the carbon fiber tubes. (If I had found plastic tubes with correct dimensions I would have used that instead.) A 3/32" piano wire is cut to proper lenght. : [image]http://user.tninet.se/~yct679b/bailey-55.jpg[/image] The wire is slided into the carbon fiber/brass tubes, don't forget the two middle hinges! The wire is secured with a FEW drops of CA at both ends. The outer hinges will be loose until the flap is glued to the wing. The ribs are made of 1/16" balsa, more details will be added later.: [image]http://user.tninet.se/~yct679b/bailey-56.jpg[/image] Full scale flaps: [image]http://user.tninet.se/~qsq272p/pr536cl-11.jpg[/image] [b]Question:[/b] The Tempest has four flap sections, on the plans they are operated by a single servo via push-rods and four bellcranks. Is there an easy way to operate the flaps using two servos, via a Y-pushrod? Or is the best solution to use four smaller servos? How large/small servos do I then need? Cheers! Hi Adam, I used a SLEC engine mount on my Tempest. Needed a little "modification" to get the engine (OS25 FX) all the way back. [image]http://user.tninet.se/~ytm843e/P7030001small.jpg[/image] To hide the antenna I used some left-over of a yellow Sullivan inner push-rod. It exits at the "tail-wheel" position. Thanks Kmot and Ron! The final weight is 640 grams (22,5 oz) with a "heavy" 500 mAh RX-battery. I'm using an old OS MAX .10 with a 7 x 4 prop. Not sure about the maximum power on this specific engine, but a newer OS Max-10 FP has 0.27 HP or so.. Anyway, there is plenty of power [:D] Made flights no. 3 and 4 yesterday with a lot of attention at the field. There were questions like "do you have a ducted fan in the stove pipe?" Yeah, the OS is screaming!! /Christer
