RE: RC Speed Boat problem after first use???
Well, the motor appears to be broken. Take it apart. It's already broken, you can't really break it more at this point. Generally, a fried motor will be readily apparent if that's the issue. Sometimes you get lucky and there's just a loose wire or a brush is stuck. Won't know until you pry it apart...

RE: Micro Outboard Upgrade
Hi Jetpack, That may be my next step. I have plans drawn up for a 1970s era B-stock hydro, as well as my 1990s era C-stock runabout. I've built some of both in different scales - never anything this small. I think there's still more to be gotten from this little motor as a 280 size motor would fit (currently a 260) inside the casing and it could also benefit from a lighter hull - the plastic one I've got is light, but not ultra-light... But the proof of concept is there! This is a viable, workable, doable motor of sufficient power to plane a small hull easily and (so far) reliably!! To say I am jazzed would be an understatement! - Scott

RE: Rigging an Aquacraft EP-1 ??
Ahhh, an old MiniMax! Had one of them when I was a kid. I ran a 7.5hp Merc on mine and it was fast enough. A 25 will be a handful - and then some. At 8-feet you will likely run out of boat before you run out of throttle. Be sure to get a prop that keeps your RPM down. If you're running a stock prop on your 25 it'll rev well past the redline. Your modifications will help with the transom strength (that's how "real" hydros are built) but not necessarily with control... The plans said they would handle that much power, but I'm not sure it worked out that well in reality... As for the scale model version, the EP1 came on the Pro Fisherman with a stock Aquacraft branded Futaba 3003 servo, so a basic standard size servo should work. I use Traxxas 2075 waterproof servos on my outboard boats. - Scott

RE: MRP Bud Light Tunnel rides again!
I did some prop testing while on vacation last week and have it performing considerably better. Started with the stock 3-blade 31mm prop. The 30mm 3-blade ventilated too easily, even with the motor all the way down on the transom. The 33mm 3-blade ended up being the best performer so far. I really like how it performs now! RE: MRP Bud Light Tunnel rides again!
I trimmed the motor down a little bit more and added an 8.4V battery pack to the mix this weekend. Seems to like the changes as it hops less, although a lot of it has to do with the near constant low rollers we have here - part of life on the River. Took some more video: www.dailymotion.com/video/xdrnek_mrp-bud-light-tunnel-with-graupner_tech . The best pass is at about 1:45. It's going fast enough now that I hooked it in a turn and barrel rolled it! Got it dried out and back on the water fairly quickly, although the receiver needed further attention after it started glitching. Much better now, though...

RE: MRP Bud Light Tunnel rides again!
Just checked the Tower site and their specs for the Nautica say it's for 4.8 to 8.4 V, so I guess it won't hurt to bump it up a bit. Also thinking about what motors I could use on this outboard. Graupner makes a 12V Speed 600 Turbo. The boat was originally designed for 14.4V - I would think the 12V motor could handle a 2 more cells, maybe? I'm trying to stick with old tech stuff due to budgetary constraints. Any suggestions for an ESC that could handle that - also keeping in mind the budgetary thing... Thanks!

MRP Bud Light Tunnel rides again!
I picked this up off eBay a couple months ago and just got around to updating it and putting it together. It came with the original MRP Mercury, but with parts for those being made of unobtainium, I decided to go with the readily available Graupner GTX 650. The outboards are about the same dimensions and configuration, so it was an easy swap. Also did away with the original micro-switch & servo set-up and installed a Traxxas Nautica ESC. Currently running it on 7.2V as that's all the ESC is rated for. Not sure how it will handle overvolting - anyone familiar with the limitations of the Nautica? I do have a watercooling add-on for it that currently is not in place (ESC is slightly warm to the touch after a 10 minute run). When it hits a patch of calm water, it lays right out, so I think I have the set-up pretty close for what it is. Currently running the stock 650 prop - a 31mm dia, 4mm shaft plastic prop - no idea of the pitch. I will be getting an adapter to run 3/16 shaft props here shortly so I can experiment a bit. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdq8nj_mrp-bud-light-tunnel-rc-boat-with-g_tech I love how it handles! This is only my third boat and easily the fastest one so far (I know, slow by FE standards, but I'm having fun!!)

RE: Outboarder?
Now you're getting into the low end of some of the hobby grade outboards. The Graupner GTX 650 can be had from a few places, and the Aquacraft EP1 shows up on eBay occasionally. There's a new brushless outboard coming from Pro Boat, too, but that would be a lot of motor for a 60cm boat. What style of boat are you planning?

RE: Outboarder?
For a boat that small, you're pretty much limited to toy outboard motors - nothing really "hobby grade" that small. I'm not aware of anything currently available new at the moment... Lots of toy outboards on eBay, from vintage metal ones to newer plastic ones.

RE: JD's Builder's Challenge Project
Hi Dominic, Outboard and inboard 3-pointers are quite different in set-up. Inboard hydros DO have a further forward CG. Old style hydros had all that motor fore of the driver. They would ride up on the prop and the sponsons. That's why they called them Prop Riders... Later inboard hydros had the driver ahead of the engine - referred to as a Cabover. This moved the CG back a bit, but still not what an outboard runs. Some of this has to do with the traditional inboard design using an angled shaft, which tended to lift the transom. An outboard (kneeler) hydro has the motor on the transom with the propshaft more or less parallel to the bottom, and the driver's weight is a variable. In my boat, in the straights, I've got my butt right up against the transom, arms stretched to reach the steering wheel. In the turns I shift my weight up, out and over the inside sponson to aid in planting the turn fin. Also depends a bit on the course, too, as a 1-pin turn will have me further forward and out, while a 4-pin turn may not need much weight shift at all, other than a bit to the inside to keep the outside chine from digging. Some designs handle much better with less driver input, particularly newer boats (as Jerry's Kneeler is based upon). - Scott

RE: JD's Builder's Challenge Project
Hi Dominic, The CG in my 1:1 kneelers (including driver) is well behind the sponsons. I've never actually checked where it is, but it certainly isn't 60%. I'm pretty sure the same holds true for Jerry's Kneeler, but he would know for sure. As for the offset motor, that is done on some 1:1 hulls to carry the longitudinal CG to the inside sponson to aid in turning. I don't see why it wouldn't work in a model as well. In the 1:1 hulls I've seen it on, the entire cockpit area is offset to the turn side (port on 1:1, starboard on a model), making the boat appear asymmetrical. - Scott

RE: How fast have you went?
I've driven several small outboard racers in excess of 70mph, including a D-stock hydroplane (40hp Mercury on a 11-foot hydroplane) and a Formula E runabout (50hp Mercury, running straight pipes, on a 13-foot flat bottom). Also driven a 2.5L inboard hydro (Ford Pinto engine) close to 90 mph. That's about where the Hydrostream with the 2.6L Johnson outboard topped out, too...

I was going by the overall look of the hull and the outboard part - not so much the motor, etc.... Looking closer, the hull is a bit different, but the lower unit for the outboard is definitely similar.

I just e-mailed the seller about availability of flex shafts and he said he did not have any, nor did he know where they could be had. Elsewise, the boat and motor look to be very similar to the old Kyosho Wavemaster and Dolphin II set-up from the late 1990s...

Having Fun with the Aquacraft Pro Fisherman
I know most folks don't think too much of these things, but as a relative beginner, I'm having a blast with it! Woke up to glass calm water this morning so I put a freshly charged battery in it and did several laps around the bay. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcxrpg_aquacraft-pro-fisherman-rc-boat-on_tech I have a couple of ROAR stock car motors in a box (27 turn). Would I gain anything over the stock 550 motor if I put one of them in the EP1? I'm going to have some time next week so I am hoping to get some work done on the kneeler hydro and assemble the Bud Light tunnel (just need to install radio, ESC & servo). Hopefully the water will be like it was this morning!! Thanks, - Scott

RE: REMCO Outboard Motors??
Yeah, I figured it was from that timeframe, just going by the Merc decals. Also discovered that there was some sharing of some sort between Remco and Kyosho as the lower units on their outboards of that era are nearly identical. Only difference is that AV plate is part of the gearfoot on the Remco, while the Kyosho has the AV plate as part of the mid-section. The innards appear to be the same, too.

REMCO Outboard Motors??
I just picked up a pair of Mercury outboards by REMCO. I can't seem to find anything on them - Googled just about everything I could think of. Guy I got them from said the boat was called a "Mach 1". Looking at them, I'm pretty sure they didn't approach anywhere near that speed. Stick Out Tongue Anyway, he didn't have the boat, nor any pictures of it. They're powered by 380 size motors and it was an RC boat, judging by the capacitors soldered to the motor tabs. They look to be fairly well made for a plastic motor. They stand about 7-1/2 inches tall. Gear driven lower unit, pinion gear driving a larger gear on the driveshaft up top much like the Robbe Roqua outboard. Motors are counter rotating. Props are about 1-5/8 inches in diameter. Anyone ever heard of them? - Scott

RE: Micro Outboard Upgrade
Jetpack - That residue you're seeing in the motor area is from this motor's previous life as a child's toy. It had been sunk at some point and the original motor was a rusted mass. I never fully cleaned out the rust that was stuck to the side of the housing. The other stuff you're seeing is the grease I'm using. It's fairly sticky stuff - I didn't want it to get flung off the parts while running and that seems to be working so far. These Nylints come up one eBay frequently, usually for under $40.00. Often see NOS ones with a Buy It Now of $30.00. They come in Mercury and Johnson flavors, but are no longer made with Nylint now defunct. Of the recent toy outboards, they're the largest - maybe 1/9 or 1/10 scale or so. The Mitsuwa motors that came out in the 1970s and 1980s are also fairly common and show up frequently. For a dummy motor application, they would work, too. Slightly smaller scale than the Mercs, they come in several flavors, including three different Yamahas, a Mercury and a Johnson. Watch eBay for awhile and you'll see them all come up... - Scott

RE: Micro Outboard Upgrade
Okay, had a few false starts - snapped a couple of the thin tubing couplers that held the motor output shaft to the driveshaft. Got serious about that and added a piece of 1mm I.D. automotive bleeder hose. So, this morning I headed back to the water's edge and it worked - and I got video this time! Only limitation was my fishing line retrieval system as she's a free running mini-beast to this point. The boat took on water any time I tried to steer it (less than gracefully). Had a couple of fairly good loops in the protected part of our harbor. Big Grin http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xcmhoz_micromerc_tech Next step - haven't decided whether to add R/C to this particular boat or build a super light 10 or 11 inch outboard hydro for this motor. Probably ought to finish my 1/4 scale version first, eh? Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) - Scott

RE: Micro Outboard Upgrade
Cyclops, I fully expect the gears to have a limited lifespan. I'm not expecting this toy (originally sold for $3.00 apiece about 10 years ago!) to have much longevity, especially when pushed. I really just want to get a few good runs out of it and then I will likely get back to focusing on my other projects. As it is, I have shimmed the gears to mesh better - no chatter now and the gear lash is just a few thousandths. I have also installed a better version of the 260 motor and am awaiting a break in the weather to try it again. A brushless motor, although lighter, etc., would be overkill for what I want the boat to do - plane off and look decent doing it. I am not looking for a speedster, just scale speeds - maybe a bit more. It was just something to mess with while I await Spring! - Scott

RE: Robbe Prinzess Boat & Roqua Outboard
Funny you should mention a smaller prop. I have another prop for it - the one that came with it when I bought it off eBay in December. It had a small chunk out of one blade and I thought about trimming it down, making a template and trimming the other blade to match. This would cut down the blade area a bit and should result in increased RPM. If memory serves, the original prop on the Roqua was 55mm in diamter. Not sure of the pitch, but I have it written down somewhere. Might have to get one of the adapters to run 4MM props to try some others... - Scott
