RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Laddie - Thanks for the feedback. I have admired the Northstar for a long time, just no time to build. I have a clear plexiglas sheet screwed and gasketed for access instead of a hatch, so hopefully the water won't be an issue. If that is the strakes only purpose, I may add some simple 1/4 balsa ones for good measure. Hope it is as much fun to fly as my Polaris.

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
I recently picked up a Northstar from a friend. It is built and ready for radio installation. However, in reviewing photos in this thread, I see that mine was built without the forward wing root strakes. How much will this affect the flight characteristics? If someone could give me the dimensions of the strakes, I could add them. One other thing. I assume that the CG balance point is based on a full fuel tank, right?

RE: Mounting in wing aileron servos CG Cub
What you have will probably work. I would have used plywood for the mounting platform though. I have both the CG Cub and the Great Planes Cub. The GP Cub has servos in the wing similar to what you are building. Take a look at the GP installation for reference and peace of mind. "Blue Skies"

RE: PBY Catalina ARF by Great Planes
MCLIATT Try a product called Corrisonex. It's a spray on water resistant spray. One of my first landings was a bouncer, not pretty, but no damage. My landing technique now for the PBY is to trim it out for a good glide and add a little power at the flare. I don't do a full stall landing, just level out a couple feet up and fly it onto the water at slightly more than stall speed.

RE: PBY Catalina ARF by Great Planes
More vasaline... I smeared vasaline around the observation canopies, the rear pushrod exits, the wing saddle and the hatch area. Cleanup with a soft cloth and you don't know it's there. Zero water on three flights. I also put waterproof boat trailer wheel bearing grease in the rudder bushing before I installed the rudder. Gotta love those slow fly bys

RE: PBY Catalina ARF by Great Planes
Maiden voyage at last! Recommended motors worked great. Needed two oz lead in the nose with a 2100 lipo shoved all of the way forward. A little vasaline smeared around the lip of the canopy hatch cut down a lot on the water in the fuse on the second flight. I am going to build a wing gasket as there is a gap at the front between the wing and pylon.

RE: PBY Catalina ARF by Great Planes
Are the cooling vents for the motors sufficient? This looks like a marginal setup at best. I am thinking about drilling holes between the fake cylinder heads on the cowl to get more air. Also would like a recommendation on keeping the esc's cool due to the lack of ventilation in the fuse.

RE: E-Flite Mini Pulse XT Owner's Club
I like the looks of the gear. What are you using for springs?

RE: Burnt out park 450 - is this normal?
I have a similar problem with a 450 in a Mini Pulse. I have probably about 20 flights or so on the plane. Last time up, something smelled hot when I landed. I couldn't tell what, so I let it set for a half hour and flew again for a couple of minutes. After landing, the motor spins for about one second, stops very abruptly and just quivers the prop. After recharging the battery (checked 12.5v) the motor does same on throttle up, but spins freely by hand with throttle off. If you goose the throttle momentarily, the motor spins and will freewheel to a stop. Tech support at E-flite wasn't much help, suggesting that I replace the motor. I don't want to do that only to find out that it is the esc. I havn't disassembled the motor, but it looks ok through the vents. This is my only brushless, so I don't have any way swapping things aound to check them out. Battery is Thunder Power 2100mh. Prop came with the 450 on a Mini Ultra Stick rtf. Any ideas?
