RE: OS 300 Twin Problems
You do not say if it starts after the priming. When I prime my 300 twin fuel also comes out of the pipes. I then set the throttle to idle, attach the glow driver and lightly prop backwards against compression and it starts right up. Does it start?

RE: The real story with CG
With the CG at a point where inverted takes little to no down elevator input will just make the aircraft a better overall flyer. Any further aft does not make hanging on the prop any easier. That just take a lot of practice and pretty fast servos.

RE: A123 Question
I have been using A123 type batteries since 2008. I use the 1100mah in smaller 90 to 120 size and the 2300mah in my 500cc and above aircraft. I also use 3 1100mah cells in my Futaba radio. I cycle them every spring and none have come close to failing so far but I never let them get below 3v per cell either. I love the fact that it only takes 10 to 15 min to charge at the field and they never develop a memory. I have a spec sheet from A123 somewhere in my files that states they expect their batteries to last at least 10 years if properly maintained. I hope to get 10 years out of mine - over 4 so far.

RE: Glow engine woes...
The only thing I can imagine is that the timing changed for the better. When using the glow battery the timing was too far advanced, pre ignition. When removed it retarded and more energy used to push piston down instead of trying to keep it from coming up.

Try Scrubbibg bubbles bathroom cleaner. It works so well they should probably use a RC airplane in their ads. Takes the oil residue off like it is not even there and leaves the plastic coating shiny

I have the Phoenix yak 54, very similar to the 300 and have a 46fx in it. It flies great. I use a apc 12.25x3.75 prop. The engine loves it and it pulls the 6 lbs aircraft straight up. Don't remember the rpm but I like the way it flies. That's my 2 cents

RE: First attempt at robart hinges FAILED, now what??
[quote]ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace There is confusion about the glue here I believe. Original Gorilla is a polyurethane glue that is catalised by humidity. Moisture should be present hence the water. It expands, and this glue works very well with Robart hinge points. the OTHER Gorilla glue is a type of aliphatic resin or PVA like Tightbond. This type of glue should not be used. I am glad this thread was started as I did not know that Gorilla glue also came in a non-expanding wood formula. If the original polyurethane glue was used the hinges would not have come out. My first clue to the wrong glue was that he did not complain about the glue foaming out of the hole. I have used Original Gorilla and hinge-points on all of my gassers and most of my glow planes for about 8 years now and not a single failure. Just the wrong glue was used. Use the right glue and all will be good.

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I did use the supplied mount, it is just wide enough when fully adjusted to its widest position. As far as the weight, as stated the fuse is built very light but the wing could be lighter. It is sheeted foam and I am sure the foam is solid.

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Yes I believe that you could lighten it up some with the holes as you state, maybe save an ounce or two. I did not and the airplane came out to 8.5 lbs. with balance weight added so I am happy with the weight as built - - but lighter does fly better...[:)]

Thanks for the kind words. I am looking forward to a 110+mph low pass down the runway. After I tune the pipe this weekend I will take a few more pics. Concerning the cowl, it is split behind the engine so it goes on easy but covers up the gap behind the engine. I will get a pic of that also along with the tank install.

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I finally got around to finishing my DB. I used my old Spring Air retracts and my YS 60 engine both from the 80's. No tuned pipe in the pics as I still need to cut the header for tuning. Initial run was 12500 with a 11x9 APC prop. A little shorter pipe and I will get 13k on the ground - not bad for an old engine. The weight cane out to 8.5 lbs and with the battery as far back as I can get it, I still need 1oz of tail weight for balance. I hope to fly it this weekend - if other life issues don't get in the way. By the way, I used a hayes 12oz tank that fits in the fuse very nice. I support it with foam rubber and the rear of the tank rests against the servo tray. I now remember why I hated these type of aircraft back in the 80's - no room in the fuse for everything that needs to go in there.

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
I have really enjoyed reading through this thread and feeling the enthusiasm for this aircraft. I always wanted one way back when but did not believe I had the building talent to get it right so I never built one. I did build a Sig King Kobra and flew it for many years and love the way a pattern type airplane flies. I still have the motor and retracts from the King Kobra. I just got the DB ARF and starting installing my old YS-60 and Spring Air retracts. I will be installing a 16oz tank right in front of the servo tray as the YS does like its fuel. I can’t wait to see this plane low and fast right down the middle of the runway – woopee!

RE: Giant Sweet and Low stick
I built one from Midwest plans. Back in the 80's this was one of the largest aircraft seen anywhere. Today it looks just about average size. I took some liberties with the plans and changed the tail section to look more conventional and added flaps so I could program in the CROW effect. I move the wing servos out in the wing, the plans had torque rods, and I put the other servos in the tail like most modern aircraft to help with balance. The landing gear is a hand-me-down from a 50cc size Edge and the wheels are a little big, but I think it looks pretty good. I have a g62 on mine and With this engine it weighs in at a hefty 20 pounds dry but with around 1800 sq. in. of wing area, It flies great. The crow is fun to play with and makes landings so easy. From altitude I can point it strait down with engine at idle. About 30 ft above runway, level off and land in about 30 ft. It is like having a parachute tied to the tail. No current pictures, sorry

RE: Byron Sukhoi 27% flutter
The big Byron Sukhoi did have servos in the wings I believe and they did provide a counter balance fix for flutter. Byron sent it to me for the kit I had - sold it long ago. It consisted of triangular lead pieces attached below the aileron with aluminum tubes. I believe that everyone is correct that today with good digital servos, the flutter problem encountered back then would not be an issue.

RE: Wing Tubes
I used a 1/4 wood dowel with a 1x3 inch peice of 150 grit sandpaper attched to one end. I split the end of the dowel and slid the sandpaper in the slit. I chucked this in my drill and honed the tube. Doesn't take much work to get the tube to fit. Good luck. There are several topics concerning this if you search a little.
