RE: ESM Customized P51 Mustang
I received the new exhaust system from Keleo Creations today. This is a real working exhaust system and should sound very cool. I hope to have it running tomoroow with some video to go with it. Man this thing is looking killer.

I had a chance to work on the wing some over the last few days and have completed the top and half of the bottom. Got the rivits in and installed the 50 cals. I flite metaled over the top of the wheel liners and the end result came out pretty good. This is really easy to do just a little time consuming. More pictures to follow.

For you guys that want your own color scheme, Removing the existing covering isn't going to be difficult. Then you can cover it anyway you want. I have flown the FM in several different colors and the black and yellow is the best for me. And yes, the chicks covering the FM are china dallas cowboy cheerleaders with Brittney Spears (Hit me baby one more time) skirts. Well, its nice to imagine our final Flying Machine Monsters are only coverd by hot chicks covered in hot oil so as long as I am not asked to provide pictures we will all just keep the faith. Tomorrow I should have an arrival date to Seattle so we can all start planning on our assult on our flying fields as we take over the world in FM mayhem. Our next adventure is going to be a composite FM. You can bank on it.

RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
If you saw these girls cover an FM in an hour, it would make you sick. They have 4 irons at different temps, a huge selection of different hobby knives, and a felt covered table about waist high. They can roll through some covering. To top it off, I have been covering airplanes 30 years and I can't do a better job in the 15 hours it would take me. If you have already registered we have your information. When the FMs are on the boat and we have the shipping manifest meaning they will be in port in two weeks then you can purchase your aircraft. The first order is for 500. We have 293 registered customers with 411 sold. This is just from this forum alone. The FM is not being advertised anywhere else until after every current subscriber to the Get My FM website is given the chance to purchase their order. We will send out an email to every registered user to the website and post here on the forum letting you guys know they are ready for purchase. After one week we will open the marketing for outside sales. We know this container will be sold out prior to arrival but I want to make sure that every person who followed this forum gets first right to purchase their FM. We will have another container filled and shipped about 60 days behind the first one. THis way we should have enough to last us through Chinese new year. I would like to have 200 in stock at any given time but this is a global aircraft so I don't really have a clue as to what sales are going to be. First things first. The loyal FM guys have to get theirs first.

RE: Don Muddiman Flying Machine
I'm afriad it is what it is. If we want a hands on designed Don Muddiman FM with: Aircraft grade plywood in all the high stress areas, Built to Don's Standards (not Hobby King), Fully webbed wing construction built to survive 41G maneuvers, Upgraded hardwood 4 bolt wing mounts in an ARF with all of the hardware, Then we have to do the math. The average time to construct an FM over any ARF of its equal size is 3.2 hours longer and every one of them have to be identical and to Don's EXACT standards. This doesn't sound like much to us but in the grand scheme of things (as far as factory building is concerned) its huge. Balsa is up 28% These have to be built in a dye to get them perfect every time. No hand building construction (which is quicker) will work. Originally I was shooting for pricing in the $190 range and in our first prototypes we were quoted a price that would accomodate this but the factory soon found out that their way of building this kit wasn't going to pass muster. This is why it took 11 months of prototypes (just on my end) to get to the final product that Don would sign off on. This is (without question) the most sophisticated ARF EVER designed or even attempted. There were other factories that we gave the opportunity to build it that simply gave up or admitted this project was way out of their ability to complete to Don's specs. As a matter of fact, 5 years ago, this ARF wasn't possible. I think East RC found out it was just not going to be within reason to build the FM as the final price would make it unsellable. But I will admit this. If East RC hadn't put fourth the effort in providing their final prototype, we wouldn't be here today. Thats just the facts. Most of the factories we visited wouldn't even attempt this project for the same reasons. The final price would just be too high or it wasn't in thier current skill base to make it and ARF. I only offer this information not as an excuse for the FM pricing but more of an understanding as to WHATS IN THE BOX. I hope you guys enjoy the final product as it has been a gut wrenching task but in the end, very much worth it. After 38 years of knowing Don and flying with him, we finally have the worlds only ARF Flying Machine.

We looked at uncovered pricing. Its just not worth it. It only takes these girls about an hour to cover an aircraft. The price difference is 10 bucks.

RE: ESM Customized P51 Mustang
Hey Jimbo I don’t have the gear yet. Haven’t had the chance to get my brain around it yet. Gene (Troy Built) says they should have theirs in a few weeks. (Electric) But I am ALWAYS open to other options. As far as airflow goes, if its anything like the big Mustang I built for Aeroworks it should have plenty. The top of the jug is cut out on the bottom of the cowl and the forward air scoop is open. When I install the Keleo Creations exhaust there will also be lots of airspace around the exhaust pipes as well. The bottom air scoop will be closed off. Heres the video to the larger mustang we built.

RE: ESM Customized P51 Mustang
Hey Fellas, I have been away for a while but I am back in the shop working on the mustang. I ordered a cockpit kit from Dynamic Balsa. You can find them at http://www.dbalsa.com/accessories/cockpits.htm They make some very COOL kits for cockpit upgrades. Since we are spending so much time on this build I thought it deserved a real cockpit. I had to cut out the flight deck, remove the servo tray, and frame the inside of the body but it was worth it. The kit was around $100 and comes with everything you need and pretty good instructions as well. They even include a DVD with lots of quality pictures to help you. The fuse is now complete and I will be starting on the wing this week. Wait until you see what I have for 50 cals. Its lookin real good.

RE: Gee Bee R3 30cc
I mounted a 3W 50 engine in mine with side mount carb. I don't remember how much room but I do remember its more than enough even for the 50cc. I opened up a hole in the bottom of the cowl for the exhaust tubes and have PLENTY of airflow. I run mine as lean as possible, wide open, the entire flight with no overheating problems.

Hey BabbleFish. I have been out of the office for a few days. You don't need to beef up anything but I always fiberglass the engine mounting box. I have a 50cc on mine with no problems. As far as the wire gear is concerned, I know Robart was working on a set of struts for the 30cc. I have their struts for the 50cc and they work fantastic.

RE: ESM Customized P51 Mustang
I have been out of town on business and not working on the mustang but all that is changing this week. I received the decal sheet from Cal Grafix and it looks great. Tru Turn is sending the spinner for the project and we also have an 18 X 8 Zinger 4 blade on the way for additional testing. We should receive the cockpit sometime this week as well. I did receive the Flite Metal and the rub on nomenclature for the build so I will be busy this week getting this monster in the air. I will post more photos and updates as I complete more work this week. Oh yeah, I did get the wing primered and ready for sanding. Should have the wing and fuse Flite Metaled by the end of the week.

RE: ESM Customized P51 Mustang
FM is a walk in the park. It has an adhesive backing. You cut it to the size you want, peel off the backing, and rub it on with a small burnishing tool that comes with the FM kit. You overlap it about an 1/8 inch to make your panel lines. You also get a small metal wheel with litle teeth that you roll across the FM to make rivets. Bo, its the greatest stuff I have ever used. I use it for door handles, knobs, cockpit features, prop tips, and anything you can think of. If you gave me a banana I could train a Rhesus monkey to use it in about 30 minutes.

Hey ya Skillet, Good to see you still bumping around out there. The prop pictured is the Biela 17.3 X 8 carbon fiber. This is going to be another hands on test project until we figure out what works. That was just my best guess going in. I can't find a factory prop chart for the new DLE 35 so I am using Troy Builts chart to get close. I would love to hear more about your converted gear. That is one nice setup. What siera gear did you use for the conversion and (if you don't mind) how much for the completed gear. I was looking at a few Corsair setups on YouTube. That is the cat meow baby. Very nice equipment. Fred

ESM Customized P51 Mustang
Some might remember the 4 bladed mustang I did for RC Aeroworks with Flite Metal and a DA 85. Since that project is on the expensive side we thought we might replicate the project but do it on a more affordable budget. Gene over at Troy Built sent us one of his 71 inch mustang kits and some few cool parts to see what we come up with. We will remove the factory covering on the wings to fliberglass. The Fuse is already composite so this will speed things along. We are using the new DLE 35 rear exhaust (4.1 hp) and Kelvin over at Keleo Creations is providing us with some working manifolds for this fire breather. We are going to try a few 4 bladed prop setups to see if we can find a reasonable combination for flight but plan on some two bladed speed traps. We have to find out how fast this new powerplant can push the Mustang. We will be using Troy Builts new electric retract system. I will send pics when it arrives.

RE: ESM Customized P51 Mustang
No prep other than a tack rag. The entire fuse is coated so you can't feel any of the decals. I covered right over them. I used 3/4 oz on the wing with a 2 oz in the middle for a little extra support. The flite metal sticks real good to the existing surface. Better than the first one I fiberglassed. I was very surprised. The only thing showing behind the metal is the panel lines and cowling screw holes.
