RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
They seem like they've been around for a while now, but haven't seen a build thread on them. I believe most of the High Speed gliders folks use them to reduce drag. I plan to get the most of the other wing panel servos installed today, and start joing the wings.

I was able to start on the flap RDS, but since there wasn't much support for the assembled pocket. I had to make a housing for it which is glued to the flap LE, and the flap ribs.

With that aileron setup up I was curious to see what the maximum deflection throws that I would get, so I got a quick rx and battery to the servo and I measured 1 1/8" throw both ways. More than plenty.

Thanks, Here is some pictures showing the installation of the assembled pocket which is glued into the aileron. You first need to cut or dremel out the aileron area in which the pocket will reside in. I then had to cut about 1/4" from the end of the shaft to get the aileron to fit to the wings TE. I test fitted everything, and included pictures of both the top and bottom view. No aileron hinges yet, I'll leave that for last.

Still waiting for the RDS parts to show up, been looking every day for some sort of package to arrive in the mail, but nothing does. Hopefully it will arrive soon. I really want to use RDS in this bird, but if they dont show up eventually I will have to resort to the common pushrod installation. Other than glassing the horizontal, and vertical stabs, i'm stuck.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Thanks Guys, My idea is to use the rudder output to run both the Rudder and the Tail wheel, and also control the amount of throws to each servo individually. I know that Futaba makes a unit to control 4 servos, but I thought that I saw one for two outputs last time I went to my hobby store. I believe it was made by MPI. I'll have to do a search and see what I come up with.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Still waiting for the RDS parts to arrive, I started on the fuselage, and I'm at the tail wheel section using the robarts 121. I also had some time to work on the retracts, those robart 4" wheels just wont seat completely in the well, the width is about 1 1/8". The 4" dubro had the same results, so I decided to shave off the width on the dubros a bit. I managed to remove the foam wheel from the hub. The hub is made up of two similar halves supported by 4 metal threaded studs. How did they get the threaded studs sandwiched by the two hub halved is a wonder to me. Anyways once I got them seperated with a hacksaw I grinded down the inner halves, sanded down the wheel sides, and glued everything back together. I also had to reduce the height of the rails to seat the retracts in below the bottom sheeting.

I know what you mean on these Dubro wheels since I've used them and also on some of my bigger planes. I got the notification from tower that my shipment is on the way, if the robarts start failing i'll switch over to the dubros. I also agree with what bigtim posted, I'll give that a try as well.

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Thanks Bob. I framed up both wings halves, and I'm now awaiting for the RDS parts to show up. I hope to see them any day now since the order was placed last week. Its much better for me to work on each individual wing halves seperatly then having to work on the whole wing. Believe me the temptation of joining both wing halves were very strong, but I decided to wait. I'm also going to strengthen up the retract rails by adding support blocks underneath them. I'll start on the fuselage assembly if the RDS parts don't show up soon. This build is going faster than I expected. I ordered 4 Inch robart wheels,a 1 1/4 inch tail wheel, and a squencer unit.

Looks like I'm joinng in as well. I'm also going to convert this one to a B version, got the conversion kit last summer, and recently bought the P-51 kit last week. Started build on Monday. I've got the horizontal stab, vertical stab, rudder, and just started on the right wing. My setup will include Robart 701RS 85deg air retracts, robart 121 retractable tailgear, RDS, working inner gear doors, and hopefully working tailgear doors as well. With the knowledge I learned from this thread my build will go a lot smoother then I expected. Thanks!

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
I had the opportunity to fly this plane today. It wasn't mine but belong to a fellow flyer, since he wasn't quite experience with warbirds, he asked if I could fly it for him. I couldn't refuse seeing this beauty. It has a 120 four-stroke, I believe he mentioned OS. The first thing that really caught my attention was the amount of lead weight attached to the rear of the fuselage, when he flipped it over to attach the wings. The first thing that came to my mind was , "Oh No here we go again, another tail-heavy warbird thrown at my lap", Don't know if you been there or not, but I've had a few of them thrown at me, and trust me the experience is enough to keep your heart pounding in your chest for an extra 15 minutes. SO far I've been lucky and saved them all. Anyways I must of asked him about it like 5 times, and re-assured me that it was flown like this allready with no problems. "OK", I said, and we fueled it, did some minor adjustments to the retracts, set her on the ground and taxied the P-51 to the middle of the grass runway. I gave her a little throttle input to start her up, gradually increasing the throttle while holding the tail down with the elevator and feeding her right rudder to compensate for the torque. At about half throttle the tail came up with the elevator at nuetral, and still holding the right rudder a bit, then she did her magic, and lifted up so sweetly. WOW, what a beautiful takeoff, and guess what, she felt great. No CG issues what-so-ever. The rest of the flight was picture perfect. What I mean by that You could of taken a picture of her throught-out the flight, and they would have been all perfect. Out of all the P-51's that I have flown, and believe me I have flown many from ARF's to Kits. This one is the best flying P-51 that I have flown so far, very smooth, very gentle, very predictable, just perfect. After flying it for a few minutes, I was soo astonished with the flight, that I had forgotten that this was not my plane, and the owner was next to me, willing to take control of it himself. So I gave in, and let him have controls. He too was extremely happy on how well it flew, and then he told me that this was his first time flying this plane, the maiden was flown by another pilot who didn't want to give the owner control of the plane. Well I couldn't blame him, this plane gets her hooks into you and don't let go. Time to land, and I was given control again, with the flaps at full, gear down, the approach was very gentle, and she touched down so nicely. This plane is a winner, and whoever has the opportunity to fly one is very fortunate.

RE: Hangar 9 warbirds with no flaps
I've flown the H9 Corsair in glow and electric setups, the H9 P-47 in glow, and they didn't need flaps, or any flaperon mixing to land. However, I did add flaps to my recent H9 Corsair, reduced the width of that UGLY center section so that the left and right wing panels meet the fuselage, and she slows down very nicely with the flap mod.

RE: CMP BF 109 -FOR THOSE INTERESTED
Zip charging is the way I charge these A123's. Like I said for this plane a 12s2p A123 pack is what I would use. This allows me to split the 12s2p config too two 6s2p packs, and then all I need is two lead acid marine batteries in series with two 18 gauge wire(speaker) at around 14ft to bring the current down to 20 amps. Each cell can take up to 10amps of charge, a 2p configuration can take up to 20amps. I charged a 3s A123 directly to one lead acid battery with this zip cord charging method, and I also chrged a 10s pack with 3 lead acid batteries in series. With todays chargers they are limited to handle that kind of wattage, so your charge time will obviously increase. How safe do you think this zip charging is? well, let me say I have charged over 60 times so far with no issues. My experiments: 3s A123 for .15 to .25 size planes. 6s A123 for .40-.50 size scale warbirds, .60 size trainer( Nextar, Nextar Electric) 12s A123 for .90 size scale, and worbirds(70-75inch range) Any in between 4s,5s,7s,8s,11s will nave to be charged with a variable switching power supply in that voltage range, or a mastec varible voltage power supply form an inverter. I still like the Idea with the lead acid batteries, you leave it in the vehicle, and back the vehicle up to your setup and just charge from there. There is a wealth of information on the other side of the Internet pond, in the Batteries and charger section. I'm sure you've been there. I'm sure there is someone in your club that has some type of electrical background that can help you setup a battery pack(soldering batteries tabs, and connectors). I would start there before venturing somewhere else.

The prop is a vario-prop, it is intended for elecric setup only, and yes I will use it to fly this plane. I also have a two blade setup for it as well. With that prop I can change the pitch of the blades as well. The gear I'm using is the Century jet, which was one of the options listed at tower hobbies for this plane. I installed them per manual. I'm going to be flying this plane mostly from a paved surface.

RE: Great Planes Cherokee ARF
Grass is a problem with this plane, and bigger wheels are neccesary for this. I attempted to fly off of grass with both a glow and electric setup, both ended flipping over and cracking the very thin plastic canopy. I will not be attempting this again. Another thing I noticed that the bottom of the front fuselage, forward of the wing is taking a pounding of some sort, with holes to the fuselage. I repaired it twice, I haven't pin pointed to the origin yet, but a friend said it might be from the nose wheel pants. I've also noticed it on another cherokee.

RE: CMP BF 109 -FOR THOSE INTERESTED
I Haven't purchased my batteries from Hobby city, just the motors and ESC's. I get the A123 cells from Ebay, Dewalt DC 9360 battery module which has 10 A123 cells in it. Then I split the batteries into the configuration that I want, and attach a balancing connector. After three or four cycles of the new cells balance out too 3.6v per cell. I tried to post the link for the motor and ESC from Hobby City but it didn't work. Anyways the ESC part # is TR_S100A-HV (Turnigy Sentelion 100A HV 2s - 12s) The Motor is a TP5330-8T (Tower Pro 5330-8T) I have used the above setup on 5 different planes with great results. If you really want to add the real engine sound ( Daimler-Benz V12)then you could go with this, from Aero Sound:[link=http://www.aerosoundrc.com/products.htm]Aero Sound[/link] Comes with machine gun sound too

Or you can make a 12s2p A123 pack to fly this bird. Then split the pack to two 6s2p A123 packs via a shunt switch. Get two lead acid batteries in series(24 volts) with 14ft of 18 gauge wire to drop the charging current to 20amps, and you will charge the pack in less then 15 minutes, and not have to wait an hour for li-po's. You could also leave the A123's in the plane while charging. You don't have to wait for the batteries to cool down either.

RE: Great Planes Cherokee ARF
I've maiden three GP Cherokee's so far, two of them belong to other people, and one mine. The first one was setup for electirc I don't remeber what exactly it had in it but the first time I flew it, I was hooked. The second one had an OS .46 2 stroke in it. With this setup it had plenty of power, and I mostly flew it below 1/2 throttle. I decided to go with electric in mine using a Turnigy 50-55B 600kv motor, and an 80amp ESC from Light flight RC. The battery pack I used is an 6s2p 4600mah A123. which gave me a total weight of 7lbs 10oz. I usually only fly for 8 minutes total. So with an 8 minute leisurely flight I consume about 1700mah from the pack. An 8 minute flight with some maneuvers uses about 2300mah from the pack, and an 8 minute flight with lots of manuevers uses 3200mah from the pack. The flaps are very nice it slows the plane down a lot, and it is effective for a real slow landing. I dont use a charger for this 6s2p A123 pack but instead wire two 12v lead acid marine batteries in series to give me 24volts total, then I attach an 18gauge speaker wire around 14 feet in length to drop the current to 20amps to the battery pack. Packs charge in about 12 minutes, and I'm flying again. I did this for a total of 9 flights today. Love to do touch and goes with this baby. Here's a short video taken last weekend of my Cherokee: [link=http://www.rcuvideos.com/item/88GGP4CP069BJMZV]Cherokee video[/link]
