Try a search on RCU for Bell X-1 - a while back some guys built one for launch from a B-29.

RE: TwinJet to Rocket Propelled/Ever been done?
Yes, stuff like this has been done before. Looking at your pics, I'd suggest joining the rocket boost gliders forum on yahoo groups, and checking out the motor mounts. Nylon straps won't keep a "b" engine in place, much less a "G". Most mounts involve your traditional cardboard tube, epoxied into plywood mounts. This motor will produce a phenomial amount of thrust for a short time. Most typical model rockets accelerate to almost 350-400 mph by the time they hit the end of the launch rod - that's 36"!!!! Most of the plans, write-ups I've read have cited wing failure due to the extremely high G-loads encountered - ie. they get ripped off on launch. You may have to use glass reinforcing tape an the leading edges/spars. Weight is a critical factor, but so is strength. And good luck[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] PS - I've got both the Estes Astroblaster and Stratoblaster. They're still in the box, but I've studied the instructions for possible motor upgrades - I'm a power-freak too[:)]

Funny that...I'm in Canada right now, in snow, and the propane regulator on my BBQ couldn't give a rat's rear end what temperature it is outside - nor could the propane that happily flowed out to cook the two sirloins for dinner on Sunday. RE: Extra 300 scrachbuilt ???
Ooooo...that is a high loading...If I remember correctly, your typical trainer is between 10-15 oz./sq. ft. See what you can shave off, ie. lightening holes - woops is right - check current aircraft for structure so you know what can safely be removed. And don't add weight to balance it! You should never add weight to to get your CG - always shift components around. And good luck - keep us posted.
.....also if it fails... how much for one turbine?
- Nasty, but ROFLMAO!!!! I'll give the guy credit for trying it, but even a two minute flight time makes it impractical - unless you can "juice" an elephant. And if you could get to 100 MPH, you still have to slow down = time and fuel... then, as you burn the fuel, you get lighter....so many things to think about - stability in windy conditions....is it self-stabilizing in calm conditions? An "inescapable pinwheel" comes to mind. And losing one engine...God...what if you lost two? On the same side????? - Hello, trees! One on each side? - Hello, garden!...Pavement.....Garbage-truck - whatever..... All the moving parts......why not Lockwood-Hiller Valveless jobs???? much simpler... His hand control system, lack of any kind of crash/fire protection... even a tethered flight...for someone who replies so confidently to questions posted on ebay I don't think he's thought much about coming down period. Is this guy REALLY going to try this himself??? And if it's publicized, will it have any impact on the turbine end of our hobby???

RE: turbine ? how they work
Best piece of advice I could give is to go and buy the book "Gas Turbine Engines For Model Aircraft" by Kurt Schreckling. This is the basis for all modern model jets, and is the first succesful engine that the average person could build. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0951058916/103-2045939-5987835?v=glance&n=283155 It should be available cheaper through RCM or Traplet Publications in the UK Hope it helps.....

RE: Video of Jet Crashes
Just finished watching the video. One burned, out of all those crashes? An airport firetruck - very well prepared - and the recovery crew had fire extinguishers with them. I'd say there was more in that film related to needing a shoulder to cry on then to be alarmed about. You guys play with expensive toys - and there's more construction effort than in the average airplane - ouch! Even without the "fireball" potential, a .40 sized trainer has just as much potential to injure/kill an individual, as has happened on rare occasions. Safety - education- not banishment.....

RE: Video of Jet Crashes
Using the "explosion" argument for safety and not allowing jets at a field is really lame. Everyone that gets in their car and drives to that field that morning is sitting themselves on an average of 12 to 15 sticks of dynamite when they drive. Have we forgotten the explosive force of gasoline? 1 Gallon is equivalent to one stick of TNT in explosive force, I believe? And every day, nobody even thinks about that as a hazard. How many "rolling bombs" sit on the freeway beside you every morning on the way to work? Yet we take it for granted, because odds are, the tank won't get punctured, wont explode, etc. Yet in some cases, it is possible, and does happen. So, is a model jet any more dangerous than, say, a barbeque? A car? A butane fuelled curling iron? Nope... Anything can be safe, provided people are educated properly. And jealousy is a poor excuse to ban someone from flying. Heck, let's all ban the Hummer owners, or Porche owners, from driving.... I drive a PT Cruiser...will someone ban me? and my 12 sticks of dynamite?
