Two weeks is not a lot of time if you plan on spending most of it traveling around the country, but if you were here in the US at the first of July 2010....Jets Over Kentucky would be a must attend event.

Ragz, Here is a link showing an alternative of using two standard size servos as opposed to two side by side minis. http://www.meinalbum.ch/ddefault.asp?ContentID=1008&pship_ID=2091&GalleryID=242&offset=0 You may also want to consider mounting the servos directly in the stabs and running direct links to the elevators. There were reported issues of the stock elevator torque rods failing at the solder joints. The torque rods may be OK if you make sure the joints are secure before hand, but difficult to repair if a problem arises afterward.

RE: C-Arf Mig 15 Retract Install
Look's like I may have to contact the sales rep from which I purchased the Mig kit from. I don't know if this is the norm or I just got a defective stab assembly. The surface cracks in the previous pics were bad enough, but that one is on me since I did not quality inspect it well enough upon taking possession....I however couldn't build the kit to verify quality control while the delivery driver waited. Whatever the case, it plain does not fit and I personally see no way out in repairing it. For those not familiar with the design, the one piece horizontal & vertical stab assembly is located to the fuse with a 6mm anti-rotation pin at the stab leading edge with a 10mm c/f spar that fits into c/f tubes that are already installed at the factory during the layup process. In fitting the 10mm spar to the fuse and checking with a square, the spar is vertical to the stab surface of the fuse in both axis, but in checking the fit of the spar to the stab assembly the spar is off vertically in the fore & aft axis. Due to the design of the c/f tube receptacle embedded in the stab assembly, I frankly don't see anyway to make an adjustment. Any other C-Arf Mig builders experience this, and if so what did you do to correct the fit? Off to ponder some more!!! [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0932-42470475.jpg?ts=1255246719[/image] Here, you can see that the c/f spar is not at a right angle to the flat of the stab bottom. RE: C-Arf Mig 15 Retract Install
The base foundation laid for the large gap repair. Quite simple in it is just a piece of 1/32 ply glued to the inside edge of the stab skin and angle matched to the rudder leading edge base area. I will build that up to be flush to the skin plus blend it in and repeat the process for the other side. RE: C-Arf Mig 15 Retract Install
I have been in possession of this kit close to two years now, and just recently started the build. Today is the first time the molded stab and top rudder section have been out of the bubble wrap. There was no box damage when the kit arrived and the kit has been stored properly while in my possession, so I can only assume that the cracking in the surface was like that when shipped from the factory. The crack does appear to be just surface cosmetics as the structural integrity still seems in tack. The large gap left at the base of the top rudder...well I haven't decided how I'm going to approach that just yet!!! [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0927_1-62770357.jpg?ts=1255246718[/image]

RE: C-Arf Mig 15 Retract Install
Switching gear here. (No pun intended).... I decided to take a break from the gear/door installation on the opposing wing and focus on the aileron install. If you follow the instructions, two things come to fold. One, the aileron will not be hinged scale and secondly is the way C-Arf wants you to install the hinges. The instructions call for you to mount the aileron hinges parallel to the angled aileron tip instead of perpendicular to the leading edge, to facilitate easier installation of the aileron due to the angled root & tip of the aileron. The idea makes since in that respect, but in turn creates a binding moment of the hinges when you deflect the surface once the hinges are glued in. The instructions also call for the aileron trailing edge to extend out past the wing trailing edge by 3MM at the root & tip. This is not scale according to all full scale pics I have viewed. Why C-Arf chose to mount the ailerons in this fashion is beyond me, as with little work the ailerons can be installed in a scale manner. I opted to deviate from the instructions and install the hinges at 90 to the trailing edge spar, and install the aileron so that the root side was inset 3MM to the wing trailing edge with the aileron tip being flush to the wing tip. According to all three views and pictures of the full scale I have looked at, this is more true to scale. All that was needed to achieve this was to mark the top & bottom wing skin at the aileron pocket and sand the skin back 1/16" so as to achieve the recommended throws. Also, the pocket needs to be cleaned up of any excess glue. The first pic of the full scale clearly shows the aileron root is inset to the wing trailing edge. [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/mig15aileron-63522506.jpg?ts=1255212310[/image] The second pic shows the way C-Arf suggest to hinge the aileron. As you can see, the aileron trailing edge is 3MM out past the wing trailing edge. Also, not the hinge line of the aileron at the gap cover extensions. [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/mig15-36481361.jpg?ts=1255212311[/image] This pic shows my installation with the root side of the aileron inset 3MM to the wing trailing edge, with the second pic showing the aileron flushed at the tip. [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0893-50106586.jpg?ts=1255212312[/image] [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0894-62292839.jpg?ts=1255212312[/image] This pic shows the overall view of the hinged aileron after the wing skin overhang that forms the aileron leading edge pocket was sanded back 1/16" to the masking tape used as a sand to reference line. [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0905_2-28312232.jpg?ts=1255212313[/image] This pic shows the amount of deflection offered by just sanding the wing skin trailing edges back 1/16" and inserting the aileron a little deeper into the pocket. Not only did the end gaps become more true, it ends up being scale. [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0907-27667034.jpg?ts=1255212313[/image] Hinge spacing guideline...the hinge at the root side is 40MM out from the root tip and the tip hinge is half the distance at 20MM with the center hinge being at the mid-point between the two. Final two pics show the aileron leading edge drilled & slotted to clear the hinge points in deflection. A perma-grit round file made short work of this. [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0911-77909555.jpg?ts=1255212314[/image] [image]http://www.keepandshare.com/userpics/h/o/n/d/atechforu/2009-10/sb/100_0910-70036250.jpg?ts=1255212314[/image] Word of caution....don't use the seam line as a reference for drilling for the hinge points. It's not on center the length of the aileron and drifts slightly to one side.

Elan from the inside
Back during the early part of the summer, I had an incident with the Elan in which I smacked a runway light. The resulting damage was contained to the fuselage and left boom. If a new fuse and boom are purchased, I am looking right at $800.00, so I'm going to try and defray the cost somewhat by reworking the fuse. If it turns out to my liking, I'll purchase a new left boom. The first priority was to examine the extent of the damage and decide how I was going to approach the repair. After pondering for awhile, I decided the best approach was to cut openings in the top section of the fuselage to access the formers and landing gear blocks which were also torn loose. With dremel in hand, I proceeded to cut out a large hatch to expose the underlying structure. I will now be able to clean up all old glue joints, replace the broken formers, repair the gear blocks, and re-glue the bottom skin to the formers. When that is all said and done, I will hysol the skin that I cut out back in, glass, fill & blend all seam lines. That's the plan anyway! RE: C-Arf Mig 15 Retract Install
Here are a couple more photos where I am starting to add some of the ABS detail to the inner doors. The inner liner is temporarily taped in place to check fit & function. As you can see, instead of moving the leading edge hinge, I made a modification to the door side hinge half so that it laid right in the recess molded into the ABS inner liner. The second pic shows a 1/32" ply pie shape filler that will be glued in and smoothed over with filler putty to blend it in and hide the hinge. The existing wheel well door stops will have to be removed, and new ones made with a step to allow for the thickness of the inner liner so that the door is flush to the skin. IMHO, the door is prone too getting dinged or knocked loose if mounted to the fuselage like the original instructions call for. More air line connections will be needed, but I think the advantage out-ways the disadvantage. The first order of business is check the wing to fuse fit. Some light sanding of the wing root lip that extends past the root rib may be required to get a good fit and this can alter the small gap required (strong 1/32) between the inner door and fuse. By having the open void between the root rib and the molded wing root of the fuselage created by the wing lip makes for a tidy hinge method. When the inner door is opening, it neatly tucks in between the fuse and wing rib making for a clean look.
