RE: Norbert's 1.1m balsa cat build
Hi Norbert! This thing should fly! Glad to see you have the 1400kv model as I have found the 1100KV really needs 8s to light it up... otherwise you have to prop the hell out of it. Im going to order the 1400kv one for my sprintcat shortly. Cheers Matt

RE: large brushless cat project
Also an update, I ran an x450 at 73kmh on gps (not very fast IMO) on the KB458xl... lipos got pretty hot, id say that the L might be less torquey, but i still think 5 or 6s will be the go! also your calculations are for free running rpms ? when i run my kb through the ESC's usb program, it shows me 21000 rpm on the rev counter.

RE: quick charging question
My vote would be to charge them seperately one of these might be of use though http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7898&Product_Name=Turnigy_420_Balancer/Charger_2S~4S this will do 2 x 2s packs at once at 2amps each. I have one of the same chargers minus the lcd screen.

RE: large brushless cat project
Hi Stokes, I hate to be the bearer of badish news, but the kb 45 8xl doesnt spin that fast on 4S, I am running a single one in a 35 inch cat, so far have only gone about 42mph or so, with an M447, I spent the night polishing a x450 to try today, so will see how it goes. you will have to run MONSTER props to get any decent speed on 4s, The do have insane torque though and make my cat wheelstand if i punch it out of the hole!

KB45 motor info thread
Im not debating the fact that the KB's are said to be AMP hogs, but I have a few queries. The first batch was known to vibrate and be shimmed to tightly thus producing friction and less efficiency. Has anyone got any data etc with actual amp draw etc that they could share ?? - Also will be keen just to hear the various setups too I am running a KB45 8xl 1600kv on 4s2p at the moment in a 35 inch scratchbuilt cat. Ive only run the boat a couple of times as the weather and other factors have been hindering me. Im running a wireless temp sensor and the temps havent got over 40 deg Celcius on the motor lipos or esc, with an M447 speeds are only aout 42-45mph but im yet to try some bigger props... its easy to say "a KB45 draws 130 amps" but on what setup ? what boat, what prop, what driveline etc ? How free was the driveline ETC ETC ETC. So many variables, that often do not get relayed through to the person requesting amp draw information etc. Commence debate...............................nOW!

RE: What does it take for a hull to be self-righting?
Build the Flood Chamber man, when I did the one on my ovalmaster 26 we spent a lot of time getting the balance right so the boat would self right in rough water etc, lots of bathtub testing haha! once you have a self righting boat you can go to the pond and have a quick run without worrying if you will have to go for a swim or take a rescue boat...

two RX's on one TX
Hey Guys Weird question, but say if I am running my RC boat and it stops for whatever reason, can i turn on another boat on the same freq and use the to get the first one back ? by that I mean will the TX control the second boat normally (obviously as well as the one that has flipped) or will the signal be to weak and it will act as if there is interference and glitch etc ? Radio is a futaba T6xa 40mhz ppm

RE: 80MPH V Hull
ORIGINAL: ozzie-crawl considering guys have pushed df26s to 70mph and df33s to 90mph i would say a 33" boat is very capable of the 80mph that being said the setup knowledge and testing these guys have is huge at 80mph if somthing goes wrong it happens very fast and even if you build a strong boat its going to get damaged if not totally destroyed
I Concur. thats the reason I suggested a larger hull as it will be more stable at those speeds and less likely to end in tears

i think that would be a much better choice, I have owned a similar hull when I was running nitro, where you plan to run is it rough or calm ? 80mph is still a high target, whats the fastest boat you have driven ? .

RE: 80MPH V Hull
IMO a 33 inch mono is going to be very hard to keep on the water at 80mph... Id be looking at a larger hull TBH - something more like a Seaducer, note that video is a 45 inch boat.

RE: Proboat Shockwave 26 Brushless Conversion
SRT , Ryan is spot on, That 5000mah pack, if its 20c, will let you draw a continuous 100amps. this gives a really good safety margin too and extra runtime, I am yet to see what a lipo pack will do first hand, but ive heard of such events as below occurring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCWdnjLqVWw

RE: Hydroplane
the site is in china - postage is cheap and fast if you order in stock items. for a prop i would start with an X432, with shallow strut depth. You could indeed run an outrunner, but still in nz you will pay 70$ for that outrunner that will cost you 20 $ us at hobbyking.com, same for the lipos, and as for the charger, i saw a local model shop with that 28$ charger for 150$ ! ROFL add me on msn if you want pm me your hotmail..

RE: Hydroplane
if it was mine, I probably would run 3s also, but this would be Dylan's first BL and 2s on will be a good starting point, without being too crazy and allowing for larger props to be run, Here in NZ small props are hard to get hold of

RE: Hydroplane
Ok BL works with Nimh, but IMO the weight of them just robs you of free performance Lipos are made of of 3.7v (nominal) cells, ideally its best to Balance Charge them, most lipos these days have a balancing plug that you simply plug into the charger Brushless motors generally produce a lot more power to weight than a brushed motor, so you would run the same size driveline, (.150 is what i use) but the motor would be a lot smaller for a 16 inch boat i would go with something like this : http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5256&Product_Name=Feigao_380-08XL_2903kv_Brushless_Inrunner Feigao 380 8xl and run it on 2s lipos - roughly equiv to a 7.2v pack in voltage, but not weight I would run two of these in parallel http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7458&Product_Name=Zippy-Ec_2100mAh_2S1P_25C_Lipoly_Pack_ and buy this charger, which will charge both packs at once http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2055&Product_Name=hexTronik_Balancer/Charger_Dual_Charge_Capable i would expect a lazy (not trying too hard) 35mph Nimh cells in such a small boat is going to rob you of speed.

RE: The Unofficial all things Jet drive thread
im liking that Cat you posted Gorbo nice lines, looks like my latest scratchbuilt Steps are overrated... I built my latest cat without them as it only rides on the last inch or so of the hull so they are pointless lol Steps are designed to aerate the hull to reduce drag so no good for jet drive...

RE: Unofficial "NQD" Tear into Jetboat Thread
ah I see, I thought by bioengineering that you were referring to atomizing the water changing its molecular structure in the jet or something lol. I have a few things i want to test on this little unit : Litres per min to measure volume. - was thinking of making a tray to feed 10l of water into the jet and measuring the time taken to pump the water. And force - Headhunter - exactly what i was thinking using the wife's kitchen scales :) once I have a baseline for both, I can do some mods and quantify them. - they may be worse, may be better, least though you can measure and compare on maxing the jet out - feeding it more power may have increased RPM , but likely reduced torque.. would be interesting to test a few diff KV motors with the above tests. on the two radios, as long as they frequencies are separated by .100mhz it should be fine. that said I would use a toroid (choke) on the esc lead from the RX. I have a 6ch radio from my heli that could be used to control an adjustable screen to cover some of the intake. im not going to wast time on this little boat doing that, but might order a big ass graupner #5 unit and build a jetsprint boat to suit.

RE: Unofficial "NQD" Tear into Jetboat Thread
By flowing the intake i mean smoothing out the casting lumps and the big square edge thats on the back wall of the intake. Im also thinking of experimenting with vortex generators on the intake.. Thanks for the post quicksilver, Interesting about the variable pitch impeller, my guess is it would be exp to manufacture and maintain on the model jet unit though. id like more info on Bioengineering in the jet unit?

RE: Do expensive motors make a big difference?
I think if you are circuit racing, and the other guys have big Neu's eventually you will end up with a big Neu. [:D][:D] Over here we have a class where we can have only 2 pole BL motors such as the fiegao, and run 12 cell up to 5000mah or 4s2p to 5000mah or 4s1p to 6000mah. It keeps costs down and the racing fast but compeditive[:D][:D] if you are not racing and just sport running then its a no brainer, save your cash, get a powertrain setup that could be transferred into another hull and buy two hulls ! a Cat and a Hydro, or cat and mono, etc etc. Hobbyking.com some BL motors and cheap prices, just make sure you only order what is in stock.

RE: The Unofficial all things Jet drive thread
Quicksilver, I know a good hull to go a big single drive in. they have them on ebay, low deadrise, good handling hull with a flat ride pad along the keel line. They are essentially a seaducer chinese clone http://highperformancemodels.com/circuit%20racing%20hulls.htm Check out the bottom hull, this is a local retailer in nz.

RE: 45" Kyosho Jetstream 1000 Electric Conversion
Have a look at the hextronic 120amp, i have one and it was fairly easy to watercool and then coat in DP270 TBH id go for a 9xl or 10xl - the 8xl is a hot we motor with a lot of rpm per volt and limits you to smaller props if you want to avoid cooking things. for lipos. id go 4s2p - something like the rhino 25 c 2350mah http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7469&Product_Name=Rhino_2350mAh_4S1P_25C_Lipoly_Pack Parrallel these and you wont be breaking the bank, I use the Zippys which are the same cells, and they are only just warm after 4 mins of over 50mph in my scratchbuilt cat with an 8xl - given the choice again i would go to an 9xl
